When you go overseas things are not always like they were back home and sometimes those differences are both surprising and hard to overcome.
In this episode we welcome Christof Wegiel (Danube Int. School) and Dave Horner (his 14th episode) to talk about 'athletic culture shock'. The guys share things that stood out to them when they first went overseas, how they overcame them and also some funny examples.
The top realizations were; the local competition, athletic ability of athletes, frequent moving of families and the amount of practices. The basic tip to people coming overseas for the first time is to lower your expectations but be ready to make a lasting impact.

A topic that can be very important for entire school communities but often gets pushed to the back burner is the focus of this episode where we are joined by Julien Draghi the Athletics Director at AIS Vilnius in Lithuania.
The marketing of our Athletics and Activity programs can have a mammoth effect on the students and staff already in our school but also help us bring even more through the door. A few episodes ago we had on Carol, Rich and Mike to talk about their book "Leadership with Legacy" (click HERE to check it out) and one of their favorite chapters is called the Front Porch meaning that Athletics is normally the first thing people see and come into your school for like the front porch of a house.

In this short episode Nick launches the 2023 international AD "State of the Industry" survey by giving a brief history of the previous two versions and how this year continues the tradition.
What is new and exciting is that this year there will also be a international Coach survey. ADs around the world are encouraged to fill in the AD and Coach survey but also send the link to all of their coaches. The results of the coach survey will not only be of interest to coaches but even more so to the ADs that they work for. Both surveys will be reviewed and analyzed with the results being published in articles online and on this podcast.

After a long COVID break the annual CEESA conference was back in person this weekend in Vilnius Lithuania. The conferences was filled with meetings, workshops, NIAAA courses, and tons of professional conversations about all things athletics and activities.

The pandemic is over… or so it seems in many places around the world. If you are in China you may not agree but as of recently things are also opening up in China and international school travel is starting to happen.

Greg Dale was the the Director of Sport Psychology and Leadership Program for Duke Athletics but he was also a good friend of the International School community. On Thursday, Nov 24 Greg passed away after a year long battle with gastric cancer.
In this episode Nick and Matt talk about their relationship with Greg and then share 4 clips of Greg from different Globetrottin' AD events. Regardless if you knew who Greg was or not you will take some great advice from him out of this episode. Nick and Matt thank Greg for his friendship over the past few years and hope that his wisdom will live on through so many people that he impacted over the years.

After a little fall break Nick and Matt are back with a new GTAD episode and welcome the incumbent Executive Director of the NIAAA, Phil Rison.
Starting off Phil shares his journey from a teacher in Kentucky to the NIAAA office in Indiana before the conversation turns to the NADC or National Athletic Directors Conference. Double duty is a common occurrence for small school ADs who are most often a part time teacher and part time AD. In this episode Nick and Matt welcome two small school ADs from their local conference, DVAC (Danube Valley Athletic Conference).
Melvin Purdue (International Christian School, Vienna) and Neil Best (Budapest British International School) are both teachers and Athletic Directors at their schools performing 'double duty'. First off we get to know Melvin and Neil who are both internationals as well as a little bit about both of their schools.

In this episode Nick is alone once again but only to start the episode off as it is a live recording from Brussels at the Coaching for a Greater Purpose Conference. It is a round table discussion on Sunday morning called "How Much Is Too Much" and is focused on what coaches think is too much for them to handle. In a climate that is always asking for more we want to hear from some coaches about what they think is too much or what they are willing to do.
Although the discussion does not answer this question it does have a some great discussion about what is important. No participants are mentioned but in the room of about 20 people there are a number of coaches and Athletic Directors. Nick and Matt are getting close to summer in Budapest and Vienna but still have a few exciting episodes left in this season like this one with Andy Longly. Can international schools have both inclusive and competitive programs? The guests in this weeks episode think so and that is exactly the topic of their section for the new international NIAAA course. Nick and Matt welcome Todd Parham (Activities Director - American Community School - Amman, Jordan), Chris Bishop (Athletic Director - American School of The Hague) and Mike DeNeef (Activities and Athletics Director American International School Dhaka - Bangladesh) to the show as they continue there series on the new NIAAA course LTC 910 that will be taught for the first time December at the National Conference in Nashville Tennessee.
Of course the guys lay out the sections of their course and the main course objectives. Some of those being to identify characteristics (positive & negative) of competitive and inclusive sport models and to help schools develop their own belief system related to sport participation. One of the main reasons that this particular topic is a ‘hot topic’ is because many stakeholders that are involved in athletics (players/coaches/parents/administrators/etc..) have widely divergent feelings on this issue. Finding the right balance in international schools is tricky and depends on many and often conflicting factors.
The five guys, who are in all different cities around the world have some good discussions about this topic but also what it is like to have AD colleagues that you trust, share with and learn from. Some of the biggest takeaways from the course, without giving too much away, are;
- Have the ability to assess their own school’s sports philosophy as well as having additional tools to address any deficiencies in their programs.
- Knowing that there is no right or wrong international school’s sports program model and knowing you can change any current structure to meet the needs of their individual school communities.
- It is possible to account for both high performance and inclusion in your program.

Recorded back on March 1st, Nick and Matt are once again joined by other Athletic Directors as they dive back into their series on the new NIAAA course LTC910. Lee Rosky, the Athletic Director from The International School Brussels joins Nick and Matt for a unique and interesting episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs sponsored by Kukri Sports and Coach Evaluator.

The international school athletic community should all listen to this episode with Jen Brooks! Jen is a trailblazer for female athletic directors in the United States and with her recently founded community she will be an important figure for current and future athletic directors around the world.

The GTADs missed their by-weekly episode but for good reason... the NIAAA & NFHS National Conference in Denver Colorado. The guys taught classes, led and moderated workshops and had committee meetings to prepare for but during the conference Nick and Matt got some time to sit down with some good friends to record a very different type of episode.

With the fall season wrapping up in Europe Matt and Nick, and a few students, reflect on an unusual but positive season. For most schools in Europe there was inter country if not international competition however, it was still filled with uncertainty. In Austria and Hungary as numbers are on the rise there have been some recent cancellations however, AIS Vienna was still able to travel to Germany this past weekend with 7 different teams.
On the way back from Frankfurt in the ICE train Nick asked a few of his students about their trip and possibly staying up after curfew. Clips from the 4 boys are mixed into the conversation but the guys are also joined by Nicks oldest daughter for a bit who just came back from her first school sports trip in Munich.
Wrapping up the episode the guys look forward to basketball season with Matt being a bit more hopeful for the normal season than Nick is. In the spring of 2021 the second International AD 'State of the Industry" survey was sent out and over 100 International School Athletic Directors took part. In this episode of the Globetrottin' ADs that survey is explained and analyzed all while Nick and Matt are sitting together in center field of Vienna's "Spenadlwiese".
The surveys main objective was to hear what ADs around the world are concerned about and it will come as no surprise that this years survey was dominated with answered relating to COVID-19. Of course the same questions from the 2019 survey were asked so we were able to note the difference that two years can make. Nick and Matt discuss increase workload, job security, and finding qualified coaches but also wish lists and things that we would do if we had more time.
Getting back to normal and even having some sort of athletic season were the top concerns and thankfully for schools in Europe we are off to a good start however, that is not the case around the world. Nick and Matt recorded this episode after playing a day of slowpitch with teachers from AIS Budapest and AIS Vienna, something that did not happen last year because of COVID. We hope that this is a positive sign for the school year 2021/22 and that schools around the world will be able to compete in person again soon.

In this episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs, Nick and Matt welcome international school alumni Anna Chanduvi. Anna was a three sport athlete in high school who has gone on to be a trailblazer in the world of sports business.
Anna played basketball while at university in Great Britain but also interned with the NBA which got her started in the world of sports business. Her next job saw her traveling around the world securing over 200 media rights at beIN Sports before jumping to Facebook to lead media partnerships strategy in the EMEA region. Anna has also founded a social-first production company championing women in sports and an NGO promoting gender equity in the industry.
All of this has landed her on the Forbes 30 under 30 list of sport influencers in Europe but has not changed her memory of where it all started for her. Highlighting ISST memories and talking about the sacrifices she made while in high school are only a few of the things Anna talks about in this episode.

The founder and leader of the team is teacher, Cassandra Till and she has organized an online conference about female athlete development and how we can educate, empower and inspire all women to believe they are athletes. As coaches, teachers and parents we want the best for the females in our lives, however there is more to training women than treating them as small men.

A brand new topic for Nick and Matt in this episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs as they talk with David Hughes from AIS Bucharest about the UNs Sports for Climate Action Framework.
The UNs sports initiative is actually not a new one but has not made a tremendous impact in the world of sports yet. The guys talk about what it exactly is, how David and AIS Bucharest became interested in it and what they have done so far.
Most importantly some ideas of how international schools around the world can start to take this subject to another level are discussed. Especially how schools and conferences can bring their sports programs into their schools' already established environmental clubs.
The UN has established five main principles in their framework which make it incredibly easy for someone to start making a difference;
Principle 1: Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility;
Principle 2: Reduce overall climate impact;
Principle 3: Educate for climate action;
Principle 4: Promote sustainable and responsible consumption;

Matt and Nick join, yes join, The Winning Way podcast on this Globetrottin’ ADs episode. Zach Shank and Tommy Brown are two private school Athletic Directors in the US and recently started a podcast called The Winning Way. Farida Osman is an Egyptian & African Record Holder, 2x Olympian, 2x world bronze medalist, NCAA champion and ISST record holder. Even more importantly, she is a role model for female athletes around the world.
In this episode Farida talks about her journey from a youth swimmer in Egypt to competing on the world's stage. The conversation centers around Farida's time in high school as a student at Cairo American College and how she managed to balance her training, school work and personal life.
Keeping females active in sports is a topic around the world but in African and Arab countries it is even harder as girls grow older. Farida talks about what it was like for her as a swimmer but also shares some of her plans for the next generation of Egyptians.
Up next for Farida are the Tokyo Olympics where she will try to be the first Egyptian swimmer to win a medal. We will be watching and wish her all the best.

On this episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs we welcome a fantastic Athletic Director from the Philippines, Catherine Tanco-Ong. Kathy is on the NIAAA international committee with Nick and Matt and has also brought speakers over from the US for the annual EARCOS conference.

Matt and Nick are joined by Dave Horner and Chris Mott for a traditional post conference wrap up. This time the guy talk about the Student Athlete Leadership Conference which they organized on February 12th 2020. The conference focused on student led sessions with two keynote speakers. Watching either live or the recordings afterwards the conference had over one hundred international schools from around the world take part.
Staying true to the spirit of the conference, this episode also features the voices of four students. Two of the students featured were presenters at the conference while the other two were participants. The students involved in the conference either as participants or presenters came together as a global community of international school students. They conquered fears, they asked questions, they learned new things, they became content creators.
The voices of the students were strong and should be heard by their peers, their parents, their teachers, and their coaches. Now that this conference is known by students, teachers and schools the hope is that in 2021 more schools will embrace it, promote it and learn from it. The job descriptions of athletic directors around the world seem to keep expanding. Recently with the introduction of child protection regulations and even more so now with COVID management. In this episode Matt and Nick welcome two very close colleagues in Matt Yoder from QSI Bratislava and Andy Harrison from AIS Vienna.
Andy, who is actually Nick boss, talks about the unique ‘Events Office’ situation at AIS Vienna before the guys get in depth into their child protection and safeguarding roles at their schools. Matt and Andy have both had their roles as traditional AD's expand in recent years.
With Athletics on hold many ADs are doing COVID related work not just to keep busy but also because they are equipped to do so. The guests talk about their changing roles while also expanding on what they thing will remain once things get back to normal.

Moving schools is a way of life for many international school teachers and in this episode we have two guests who had to navigate moving to different continents during a global pandemic.
Nick and Matt are joined by Lachlan Macgregor who is the AD at Universal American School Kuwait and Craig Wislang who is the AD at the International School of Lausanne, Switzerland. After getting to know Craig and Lachlan the guys talk about what it is like moving to a new school; why they left, how they prepared their replacements, how it was arriving at their new school and of course how this was all impacted by the pandemic.
Tips are shared for any international school employees that are transitioning this year before the guys talk about what it is like being a brand new athletic director. Craig has worked as an assistant AD in his previous school but Lachlan is brand new coming from a PE teachers role.

In the first episode of 2021 Nick and Matt welcome Jo Ito who is the AD at the Bush School in Seattle Washington. Jo is one of the rare people to start as an International School AD and then move to the United States.

Nick and Matt are live from the 2020 NIAAA and NFHS National Athletic Directors Conference… or as live as you can be for a virtual conference. This episode is full of clips that were taken from sessions from the conference or from conversations that happened during or after sessions. In a first for the Globetrottin’ ADs, Nick and Matt are joined by two guests at the same time to have a discussion about virtual competitions. It is a first because this is the first episode where academic activities are discussed. Many ADs around the world are also Activity Directors and they have (unintentionally) neglected this side of the job thus far.

Having athletes excel in sports, business, and life is what all Athletic Directors and Coaches wish for their students and on this week's episode Nick and Matt are joined by someone who is the embodiment of that.
Kieran Powell is an international cricketer who has played for the Nevisian senior national team since he was 13 before going on to play for the West Indies. He is still an active player but also a prominent business man with many different exciting projects on the way.
Kieran joins Nick and Matt because of his international schools roots at Millfield in Somerset England. Since and early age Kieran has known he would be a professional cricket player but that did not stop him from playing multiple sports while in school. The guys discuss the benefits of multi sport participation before talking about the second most popular sport in the world, cricket!
The majority of student athletes do not turn professional so a life after sports is important. Although Kieran is still playing he is not satisfied being ‘just an athlete’ as he tells the guys about all of his current and upcoming projects that he has with his amazing (agent, lawyer, author and “coach”) wife, Emma Everett.

In this episode Matt and Nick are joined by Mike DeNeef who is the AD at AIS Dhaka in Bangladesh. AISD is a part of the SAISA League which is made up of eleven schools in the South Asia region, all of which are having a very different start to the school year than European schools.
Mike talks about his way into the AD role, his job at AISD and how it has changed while they are on distance learning. The SAISA conference in general is very diverse geographically which is especially challenging right now. However, the ADs meet regularly and are planning a virtual conference for their students in late November to help them keep that student interaction which is missing right now.

Seasons are changing in Europe as Nick and Matt talk about their ongoing fall seasons, their upcoming winter seasons and then the Student Led Conference.
AIS Budapest has all of their normal teams this season but they are not allowed to compete while at AIS Vienna some local games are happening but without season ending tournaments. As Matt and Nick talk about their experiences this season, we also hear from a student and coach from Budapest, then Nick cant believe that a ‘negative’ email can return the most positives replies he has ever gotten.
Looking ahead, the motto in Vienna is ‘do what we normally do as long as possible’ while in Budapest an alternative start to the winter season is probable. Matt and Nick stay across the pond in episode 5 as they welcome Dan Schuster who is the Director of Educational Services for the NFHS.
The National Federation of State High School Associations is the national leader and advocate for high school athletics as well as fine and performing arts programs in the United States. NFHS is also the leader in online education for the interscholastic community through its Learning Center.
Dan talks about the growth of the NFHS Learning Center since its groundbreaking introduction to online education to where it is now offering courses and videos for Coaches, Parents, Administrators, Officials and Students. The center is also not just for co-curricular activities as there is a suit of courses called ‘learning pro’ that are for any students.
One of the latest initiatives is a recognition program for schools called the Honor Roll. Nick talks about his desire to have AIS Vienna be included in the Honor Roll and how very close they are. This led the discussion to international schools, what the NFHS has in store for this growing market and how little many international schools require of their coaches.
The NFHS is also a joint partner with the NIAAA for their National Conference, the NADC. Dan talks about how the move to an online conference could be a major long term benefit for everyone involved, including the international school Athletic Director and Coach.
Wrapping up with a bit of fun Nick brings up one of his childhood passions, Wiffle Ball and asks Dan what its like to be a Hall of Famer and World Champion in a sport that is definitely harder than it looks.

In this episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs Matt and Nick are joined by Bruce Whitehead of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).
Among many other things Bruce was the Executive Director of the NIAAA from 2004 until 2016, was inducted into the NIAAA Hall of Fame in 2018, has an annual NIAAA award named after him and is currently the head of the International Ad-Hoc Committee which Matt and Nick are a part of.

Dr. Jordan Greenbaum is a physician from the US who works with children who have experienced physical or sexual abuse, neglect, sexual exploitation or sex trafficking. She is based out of the Children’s Hospital in Atlanta but also works on a global scale for ICMEC providing training and education about child maltreatment and developing programs to increase awareness of child sexual violence and exploitation.
