In this episode, Nicola talks about the dichotomy of writing in an UNBOUND way, whilst feeling the need to create structure.

In this episode:

  • How the word “should” is a warning sign
  • Trusting the process of not needing to have a structure as your book comes through

  • How to sit with the desire to create structure and be present with the magic of the mess in the unknowing
  • How books don’t need to look the way we are told they “should”
  • Ask the yourself what journey you would like to take your reader on
  • What brings them to your book, and what are they looking to experience from reading your book?
  • Your journey for the reader in your book has room for magic and can take many forms
  • Consider your own journey and your own story over your lifetime
  • Merging your story and the journey of your readers allows for magic to happen
  • Give yourself permission to tell your story in a different way
  • Even with a structure in place, you don’t have to write in a linear way
  • Your book and your UNBOUND Self might have different ideas about how to write
  • A huge part of the UNBOUND book writing process is to allow yourself to be guided
  • When you allow yourself to sit with times of not knowing, the book has a powerful, transformational experience to it
  • Structure can also be created through a process that you use in your work as a structure for your book
  • “The key thing is always to leave space for magic”

Many of us feel held back from writing a book because there is a feeling that we need to be "the" expert, or that we don't know enough.

In this episode, Nicola breaks down three reasons why you don't have to be an expert to write a book, and why it's actually more transformative for your reader if you take them on a journey with you.

  1. You can be a contributor rather than an expert:
Come from a place of contribution rather than a place of knowing everything on a subject. When we come from a place of being in service, there is something freeing in that.
  2. You can write a book that activates rather than simply provides information
There are three types of books:
  3. Expert books that provide information
  4. Books that provide inspiration
  5. Books that provide a sense of activation

Books that activate encourage the readers to take action; something changes within them. You are activated and transformed as you write it, and your readers experience a sense of activation as they read it.

It’s not about the information you are proving in your book, it’s about the experience you go through as you write it, and the experience your readers have as they read it. 3. It’s powerful when you focus on the journeyWhen you share your journey as you experience it, the question of being an expert doesn’t come into it. The fact you are being called to write a book is no accident.
Even if you are a beginner in a subject, there is something so authentic about taking the readers on a journey with you as you learn. You invite your readers to come with you.

Trust your own perspective.
Be 100% who you are and write from that place.

Amy Barbiaz is one of the newest authors with UNBOUND press.

Amy’s book After the Last Fall is the first fiction release for the UNBOUND press.

Amy shares what being an UNBOUND writer means to her, and how being able to put into the world fierce female leads not bound by patriarchy tropes, and bringing to light that there is more than one way to be a woman is important to her writing.

A theme that comes through strongly in After The Last Fall is that there is no one way to be female, which for Amy is important.

As a social worker in her full time job, Amy is involved in empowering victims of domestic violence, and working with the LGBTQ+ community.

For Amy, a lot of people who feel homeless in the world can find their place with the right people, and her story is a powerful way to illustrate this.

Amy’s inspiration came from the last 3 minutes of a 7 minute long song, on the way to a client visit. Her story of the how the first scene arrived from musical inspiration is a perfect example of UNBOUND writing, and how we can create transformational books and powerful messages in the most amazing, magical ways.

We talk about:
- The UNBOUND writing price and how Amy found her inspiration
- How Amy wrote her book around her busy daily life
- How fiction can be as transformational as writing non fiction.

In this Episode, Nicola takes us through 6 ways to get started writing a book, the UNBOUND Way.

1. Gain clarity through writing
You don't have to have a detailed plan for your book, and you don't need to map it all out when you begin writing the UNBOUND way.

We can gain clarity through writing, the act of writing allows the words to start to come.

Letting go of a big plan leaves space for magic, and leaves space for a transformational, magical process of letting the book to unfold.

2. Ask what needs to come throughAsking "What needs to come through" is a really powerful question.

Putting yourself in a place of trust means you create space to notice and to observe breadcrumbs in your life of people, situations and events that need to be part of the transformational process.

3. Know that you are not alone when writing
This is a collaborative process between you and the essence of the book that wants to come through you at this time.

Ask your book what it wants to share, and allow that entity to come through and show you what it needs to express.

4. Think about the journey you want to take your reader onHave a sense of the journey, even if it's not super clear. Think about the challenge the reader might experience when they come to you, and the journey you can take them on as they come to your book.

Think about how you want to hold space for them and to take them through the process.

5. Use storytelling where you can
Readers connect with you, and your stories - from your childhood, from your experience, from your clients- provide a way for them to connect on a deeper level.

6. Allow yourself to write in a way that is non-linear
You don't need to write in any order. We are cyclical beings, the creative process is cyclical; by giving yourself permission to write in a non-linear way, when you show up for your writing you can write what shows up for you that day, and trust it's what needs to come through.
