Mike, Nate, and Jessica share their knowledge and love of the Catholic Church as they discuss theology, evangelization, and catechism while always being mindful of one of their favorite quotes by G.K. Chesterton: "It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it."
Mike, Nate & Jessica talk about the lessens to be learned from the story of Samson & Delilah and argue about cutting one's hair into bangs. They talk about: rash decisions, not defending Delilah (but kind of defending Delilah,) Ruth, high places, entertaining evil, how stupid was Samson?, spy craft (or lack there of,) the stupid Galatians, the Nazarite oath, dead animal honey, the lords of the Philistines, sins, blindings, two truths & a lie, walls, weird murder suicide stories in the Bible, Sunday Schools, she bears & Calvinist who think they are not the elect.
Samson is in Judges 13-16

We talk about: other Biblical saints we know more about, how Paul wrote a whole book of the Bible to him on how to be a bishop, what we know of his early life, page 2 of Google, the year(s) he might have died in - and that we don't know who those 2 exact dates are given, when he got his feast day, his current feast day(s) - in the West & Eastern Churches, his lack of attributes, patronages, how we don't know how he died, his being overlooked, what we know for sure about him, books of the Bible he is in, 70 or 72, & an other Titus he is not.Comment with your favorite conspiracy theory on why we know so little about St. Titus.

They talk about: Anthony of Petoskey's unauthorized visit to the set, Lenten veiling of statues, Spartacus, Solent Green, the fact that DeMille made "The Ten Commandments" 2 times, how it is an Easter/Passover classic on free/network TV, how it is very long of a film, the theology of the film, how people conflate the film with the Bible, picture Bibles, Charlton Heston's acting abilities, subplots that aren't in the scriptures, when the film came out relating to important events in Jewish history, new heresy just dropped - Moses was a pelican, Moses knew he was an Hebrew, movie tropes, novels that the film was also based on (Prince of Egypt by Dorothy Clarke Wilson, Pillar of Fire by J. H. Ingraham, On Eagle's Wings by A. E. Southon), bad 1970's-1980's hymns, the name Jethro, extreme freeze tag & the Angel of Death, the end of the world, special effects before computers, the death of the 1st born vs. the golden calf, movie explosions, Michael Bay's The 10 Commandments (what would it look like), the book of Judith, , side plots not in the film but that would be fun, the natural form of gold- a cow, the Passover, Dante, is a gyro a Passover meal?, 7 layer dips, & Mike's biggest problem with the film- that it is not about the 10 commandments; but the 10 plagues.
Also Mike wants you to read your Bible.

Mike and Nate talk about the problems with the idea of once saved always saved. They talk about how it is works based salvation, witchcraft/magic, cherry picking Romans, makes one God's master, and the lack of urgency/need of repentance in the belief. And they also talk about salvation by grace, freely refusing the grace of salvation, the show Supernatural, cheap grace, repentance, the active process of salvation in the Bible, and other Bible passages that refute OSAS.
Note: we are using witchcraft in the traditional meaning of: the practice of using magic/spells, usually to get powers, abilities, knowledge, or goods that one would not otherwise have.

We talk about his life, why he was called the Gaucho or Cowboy Priest, the many things he did to help his community, how he got leprosy, his final words and more. It is Hispanic Heritage Month! After working hard to remember the "month" that starts in the middle of a month Mike, Nate and Jessica did remember it. And they start this month with a saint, who isn't actually Hispanic, but was 100% Native American but was from the Aztec Empire right when the Spanish showed up and created the Hispanic culture. That's right they are talking about the saint who had the vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Juan Diego (Cuauhtlatoatzin or "the eagle who speaks"). We talk about: how he helped create Hispanic culture, what little we know about his family, New Spain, how we aren't even going to try to pronounce the Aztec names in this story as we will mess it up, the vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Wishbone, nuns being trouble, the conversion of Mexico, people who speak for Our Lady without being asked, miracles, Catechists, being open and receptive, being Marian, saints being human, ducking Mary, more on Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Juan Diego's cause for canonization, highly improvable miracles, and more.
Please comment with a Hispanic Saint.

Mike, Nate, and Jessica start a new series on Catholic scientists, starting with one that most everyone learns about in school, Gregor Mendel. He was a meteorologist, mathematician, biologist, Augustinian friar and abbot. He was raised by farmers, worked as a bee keeper and farmer, studied practical and theoretical philosophy and physics, became an Augustinian friar, wrote scientific papers, taught and was an Abbot. Along with talking about his life and contribution to science we discus: how being abbot cuts into science time, monks and higher education, genes, failed scientific theories, lost information and Hawkweed, so so much Hawkweed!

For our last episode for #AsianAmericanandPacificIslanderHeritageMonth Mike, Nate and Jessica talk about a whole country that is very unique in Catholic history, Korea. (In part because every saint from the country is a martyr who we may not know much more about besides that fact.) Korea has the 4th most canonized saints in the Church, was the location of the 1st canonization outside of Rome since the Middle Ages, there were 93 Koreans canonized all one time in part of the largest number of people canonized at one time, and was converted by books. They also went years without priests including 40 years when there was no priest in the entire country.
We also talk about Old Testament saints, cow-a-pults, missionary work in Asia, Jesuits vs. Dominicans, confucianism vs. Christianity, what sacraments don't require clergy, poor record keeping, zigging when you should zag, martyrs, and books.

It is Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month so every Monday this month Mike, Nate and Jessica will talk about a saint from Asia or the Pacific Islands. Today they talk about St. Alponsa of the Immaculate Conception born Anna Muttathupadathu. She was born 1 month early, was raised by an aunt, was almost forced into an arranged marriage, became a Franciscan, was miraculously cured of her life long illnesses by (now) St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara only to later get sick again, and did possible hundreds of miracles after her death. She is also the 1st canonized female of Indian origin and the 1st canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar rite.
Comment below with your favorite saint from a Rite besides the Latin Rite.

Mike, Nate and Jessica answer a viewer question on whether or not the 5th commandment covers acts of self-defense by the military, police and citizens, with a resounding maybe.
As the 5th commandment (number may vary for non-Catholic Christians and Jews) deals more with murder then any killing. A true act of self-defense that had the unintended side effect of the death of the aggressor would fall under the law of double effect in that the goal of self-defense is good, but sometimes the unintended consequences of it is the death of the other person. So if someone broke into your house and you legitimately feared for your life, stopping them in a way that could be deadly would not be in violation of the commandment not to kill. A soldier in a war can shoot and kill enemy soldiers actively shooting at them, as if not they could be killed. A police officer can shoot an armed criminal if all reasonable non-lethal ways of dealing with the situation have been tried or are unreasonable to do at that time. However, especially for the military and police they can have situations that would not be exempt from the 5th commandment, and morally would be murder, such as: bombing enemy cities filled with noncombatants, using excessive force, killing people who are not actively a danger to others, etc. (Note: we do not talk about the George Floyd case in particular, but do note that the police can not act like judge and jury and that the less amount of force possible should be used in all cases and while an untrained citizen might use more force than necessary due to fear, the situation of trained military and police is not exactly the same.) More info on the subject can be found in part 3, section 2, chapter 2 article 5 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which is #2258-2330. Also to lighten this heavy topic up some we talk about Canadians attacking and how can Mike hurt himself with a dull non-metal sword.

With last week being the Octave of Easter, we kind of took it easy and as a result we didn't have any good Youtube episodes for making a podcast episode out of, so this week we will be pulling an episode out of our vault to share with you.We hope you enjoy.
Mike, Nate and Jessica are back with more ineffective evangelization. This time billboards found on the interstate system that try and convert people by quoting them a bible passage. . . Well they just assert some belief of the group, their website backs it up with a bible passage, because that will convert people, a single quote from a book they don't believe in.

Mike, Nate, and Jessica continue their series on female saints and people on the path to sainthood with St. Hildegard Von Bingen, one of our newest saints and a Doctor of the Church who has been on the Church calendar since the 16th century. We talk about her life, how she was a known saint but was only canonized by Pope Benedict XVI (so he could name her a Doctor of the Church,) how she was good at everything and even is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany, as well as her many surviving chants, mortality play, that she invented her own language, documented many medical practices that others of the time did not, her preaching, and things that are named for her.

We apologize if the sound is slightly off, there were tech. issues.
Mike, Nate, and Jessica spent all last month talking about saints and people on the path of sainthood who were of African descent. . . and male for Black History Month, so this month we will be talking about females for Women's History Month. We start out with Servant of God (S.D.), Sister Thea Bowman, a African American religious sister who was well known as a preacher, singer, teacher, and a speaker on the importance of one's culture and being part of of the universal Church. We talk about her life, stories from her life, groups and things she helped make, her address to the US Bishops on "Black Catholic Spirituality", her singing, how modern her life was, her legacy and how the current pandemic is slowing down her cause. We also talk about the bad hymns of the Gather hymnal, how quick things happen in the Church, how long ago 2018 seams and why she is thought to be the basis of "Sister Act."

Mike, Nate, and Jessica talk about St. Martin de Porres. He is the patron of mixed-race people, barbers, inn keepers and public heath workers. Making him the 2nd hairdresser in this series and the second saint named Martin that is the patron of inn keepers we have talked about this month. We also talk about: being a barber surgeon, racist laws, how he became a Dominican, lowly jobs saints often have, charity vs. obedience, miracles that took place during his life, animals, and a famous quote of St. Martin de Porres. Mike, Nate, and Jessica talk about Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton this week. He was born into slavery in the US (putting him in the running for the 1st native born American male saint), worked making cigars as a child, had to go to Rome to study to be a priest, and got sent back to the USA to run a parish, (which wasn't segregated.) He was the 1st African American priest in the US, that didn't pass as white to be ordained. We also get sidetracked talking about St. Katherine Drexel as she helped fund the same parish for African Americans as he did.

Mike, Nate, and Jessica talk about the Venerable Pierre Toussaint. He was born a slave in what is now Haiti, but was moved to New York City and became a hairdresser to the rich and famous of his day. From the money he made doing this he bought freedom for family members, as well as caring for many people including the sick, the orphaned, and the needy. He also helped pay for the building of St. Patrick's. Which is also why he was the 1st person that wasn't a bishop that was buried in the crypt by the main altar in the Cathedral.

For Black History Month, Mike, Nate & Jessica want to talk about saints who were of African descent (or in this case actually born in Africa.) So we are starting this series with St. Moses the Black, aka St. Moses the Ethiopian, aka St. Moses the Strong aka St. Moses the Robber (also known as Abba Moses the Black, etc, etc.) We even made a new saint action figure for him. We talk about the scale of the figure as well as how big of a man St. Moses was, that he was a Desert Father, priest, and monk after starting out as a slave, thief and murder. As well as how he had to deal with racism, and how he became a patron saint of non-violence (and is also a patron of Africa.)

Mike, Nate, and Jessica talk about the unbiblical, man-made tradition of the Rapture. This one is a little in depth, so we added timestamps for the major points. As this belief is one that no Catholic, Orthodox or the majority of Protestants throughout history have believed (including every founder of the major Protestant groups), was only invented in the 1800's and seems to largely be an issue only in America. Also Jessica super hates when people who should know better post Christian clickbait that combines a good message with rapture junk. But in the name of fairness, she did use mainly pro-rapture and neutral sources in the creation of this video, so she is working from what the people who believe it say is the reasons that they do so.

Mike shares this month's Pope's prayer intention, talks about other religions in a positive way, talks about arguing, and talks to a cat that is out of frame.
The Pope's prayer intention:
"Let us pray that the Lord may give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions and not fight each other, and praying for one another, open ourselves to all."
The long version of it:
"When we pray to God following Jesus, we come together as brothers and sisters with those who pray according to other cultures, other traditions and other beliefs. "We are brothers and sisters who pray. "Fraternity leads us to open ourselves to the Father of all and to see in the other a brother or sister, to share our lives or to support, to love, and to know each other. "The Church values God’s action in other religions, without forgetting that for us Christians, the wellspring of human dignity and fraternity, is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. "We believers must return to our sources and concentrate on what is essential. What is essential to our faith is the adoration of God and love of neighbor. "Let us pray that the Lord may give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions and not fight each other, and praying for one another, open ourselves to all."

Mike, Nate & Jessica discuss all the forwards of "important news" in the Christian world that are actually: old stories, unprovable, and/or about a different group than it claims to be. And how people need to stop sending people this junk. Please, just stop. We don't need to be up in arms about what a Protestant minister did in 2007 that was in keeping with their religion's theology but because they are called a priest, and/or the group they belong to has Catholic in the name, without reading the story or doing any investigation into the truthfulness of it you passed it on thinking it was a RCC priest acting improperly, and we all need to write some unnamed bishop about this.
Also Jessica thanks Martin Luther for Christmas trees, although she does note that St. Boniface is credited with making the 1st Christmas tree, he didn't bring it inside and put lights on it.

They also discuss that if you are going back to close to normal in other areas of life, (which proper precautions,) then you should also look into going back to Mass (which proper precautions.) Nate and Jessica had too many things to say in their "A Catholic Guide to Grief" and as some of it was about what to do if you were not the one mourning but were instead the ones comforting and consoling a friend or family member who was the one mourning, they put all of that info in this episode.

Nate and Jessica have been dealing with some stuff, so Nate thought he would look up what the Catholic Church says is the proper way to grieve, only to find out that there isn't one. Part of the reason for that is that there is no one way to grieve: as the same person will grieve the death of a close friend differently than a pet and differently than an elderly, distant relative. But he did find a few guidelines for how to make sure that your grieving doesn't go to a sinful place or turn into despairing. And they also discuss how people in the Western world tend to be very bad at grieving, as well as possible reasons for that.

Nate and Jessica talk about Servant of God, Nicholas Black Elk on the feast day of a saint he joined with other Native Americans in asking Pope Leo XIII to canonize, St. Kateri Tekwitha. They talk about his life before he converted to Catholicism, his spirituality, how he joined his Lakota Sioux culture with his Catholic beliefs, his visions, as well as how he lived his life after converting. They also discuss that we aren't exactly sure on what day he was born or died and about the fact that currently there are no official native born male saints from the USA. Also officially Servant of God is abbreviated S.D for the Latin Servus Dei, but SoG would be the English abbreviation.
Comment on our social media with who you think will be the 1st native born male American male saint: S.D. Nicholas Black Elk, Bl.Solanus Casey, Ven. Fulton Sheen, Ven. Michael McGivney, Bl. Stanley Rother, Bl. James Miller, Ven. Augustus Tolton, Ven. Nelson Baker, Ven. Aloysius Schwartz, Ven. Alphonse Gallegos, or another not on the list.

Mike will be back on the show soon, but given the Pope's prayer intention for this month is for families, Nate and Jessica thought that they should do this month. Nate and Jess first point out that do to circumstances beyond their control, the break after #vEaster lasted longer then we planned. Next , they point out that due to filming in Flint there might be some fireworks in the background. Then they do inform viewers that Mike will be back soon, as filming with him is in the works given the current pandemic situation. And finally they get to the Pope's prayer intention for the month of July 2020, as well as discussions of the weather, and a thank you to all the members of their parish who have prayed for this month's intention with out knowing it for their family.
The text of the Pope's prayer intention:
The family ought to be protected.
It faces many dangers: the fast pace of life, stress…
Sometimes, parents forget to play with their children.
The Church needs to encourage families and stay at their side, helping them to discover ways that allow them to overcome all of these difficulties.
Let us pray that today’s families may be accompanied with love, respect and guidance, and especially, that they may be protected by the State.

In this week's bonus episode, we are taking a YouTube episode from early in year three named "Make the Liturgy Divine Again". First, we would like to say that Nate came up with the name and like Mike last week decided that if he says it in filming we have to title it that. Besides Jessica and Mike disliking the title or the acronym for the title this episode is about what Catholics need to get more out of the liturgy, with the guys agreeing that they need to put more into the liturgy to get more out of it, and then making a too long end screens banter.

Mike is still having tech issues, so this month Nate and Jessica are the ones talking about this month's prayer intention from the Pope, which is for those who suffer. They talk about how this intention was made last year, but is still especially timely now. They talk about how the Pope himself connected it to the suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic. And they also talk about how it connects to the suffering of systematic racism that is once again in the spotlight due to current events.

The text of the Pope's prayer intention:
Many people suffer due to the great difficulties they endure.
We can help them by accompanying them along an itinerary full of compassion which transforms people’s lives.
It brings them closer to the Heart of Christ, which welcomes all of us into the revolution of tenderness.
We pray that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the Heart of Jesus.

Deacons are not second-level priests.
They are part of the clergy and live their vocation in and with their family.
They are dedicated to the service of the poor, who carry within them the face of the suffering Christ.
They are the guardians of service in the Church.
Let us pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

When discussing the relative holiness of St. Scholastica when compared to her more famous brother, St. Benedict; Mike, Nate and Jessica got a little off topic and had a discussion on holiness, how time works compared to eternity, disagreeing with the Baltimore Catechism, as well as religious rules. Mike, Nate and Jessica talk about Candlemas and how it became Groundhog Day. They talk about the other Liturgical names for the holiday, the history of the day as well as what it has to do with the secular holiday. And of course they make jokes about the film of the same name. Also we enjoy that other names of the groundhog include woodchucks and whistle pig. And also why one shouldn't light the candles before tomorrow's feast day for St. Blase.
