Hi, I'm Sam Griffin, host of the Teacher Answers Podcast, a 28-year veteran high school math and science teacher, and an examiner of the teenage brain. Come with me as we tackle current issues and take questions from current high school teenagers and answer them in the most no-nonsense, practical, helpful way possible. Take this with you on your drive to work or walk in the park and hear what actual teens are thinking. This show is full of helpful suggestions for teens, teachers, and parents. Listen as we find out why high school students do what they do.
It's my pleasure to bring you this awesome interview all about motivation, health, diet and exercise featuring Alicia Hurps our school's Exercise Science Sports Medicine instructor. We get deep into the weeds of all these topics and hear Alicia's answers to my silly happy fun time questions. Please enjoy!
It has taken me 2 years to figure this out, but I finally have an answer to how the pandemic has changed current students. I believe this is profound and once you understand my chat bubble theory, you'll see evidence of it every time you interact with teenagers. Joining me on this episode is return guests, Kim Tatman and Shannon Kenily. If you can listen until you understand the first 20 min of this episode you'll be way better interacting with kids today and you'll stop thinking they are "different." Please take time to pay attention to this. It might be my most important work to date.
I put three questions from high school students together into this episode that addresses the issue of not letting friends drag you under. The questions are Should I make decisions to better myself or to make others feel good about themselves, can my happiness determine my success, and Is cutting off negative people in your life a normal thing?
In an activity at the beginning of the new year, I asked students to list their classes and the grades they'd like to receive in those classes. Then I asked them to write three things they could do to earn that grade. I compiled their answers and picked the top 5. In this podcast, you'll also learn what makes a gray goal and how to turn these goals into clear black and white goals. After almost 30 years of teaching, I'm confident if students did these 5 things, it would almost guarantee an A. Can you guess what they are?
Should students use calculators? When should they use calculators? Do they over-rely on calculators? Do we teach math right? Find out how math should be taught like martial arts. It's the perfect system.
Here are several questions from actual high school students. How do you get unstuck when you are in a rut and feel like you can't complete a project? The answer to that one is between the answers. Enjoy!
It's back to school time
2020 - pandemic started - heard about a school that had a graduation for the 2020 students. Good on them.
2021 - The mask year
2022- the normal year filled with learning gaps, online/in-person teaching, and quarantines
2023 - Let's call this one back to normal. - so what do we need to do
The 3 most important things teachers should do this year
Life is rough no doubt about it. Sometimes it's really, really bad. I don't want to downplay how bad someone may have it but many times though our perspective gets off and our imagination takes over making life seem way worse than it really is. Is your perspective off? Come with me in this episode and lets explore our perspectives.
This is the manual and pretty much the exact speech I gave my classes on how to work in groups of 3 and 4. If you get this wrong you have nothing but a big waste of time. Students struggle with group work - this will help.
S3|EP 4 Red alert show - What do I do when I stop caring about school? It's so easy to get behind, let it pile up, lose motivation, and feel like you can't catch up. Then you can reach the point of saying that it's not even worth it. This is a warning light. This episode is your game plan to reset your brain and motivation, and get on top of things instead of under them.
When you feel things are not worth it, you may be trying to please others and giving but getting nothing or not as much as you’d like in return.
It’s ok to be focusing on yourself when you are in high school. In fact, I’d highly recommend it.
The internet will tell you to simply say you are worth it every morning and you should do that but does it help? Is it a cure? What is the fix for this?
You are behind and it’s piling up on you and now that you’re trying to get out from under it more piles on you. This can make you feel like it’s not worth it for sure.
How do you fix this?
Your motivation has now gone to zero
Always remember motivation comes from doing, and I mean starting with very simple things to get traction.
The joy of a brain dump
I want you to do this today.
Do you have goals or even tasks written on paper right now?
The mind is not meant to hold information
David Allen in the book Getting things done - says the mind is only meant to be creative and solve problems. It’s not meant to remember everything.
If you are trying to hold all the information in your head - you must be stressed out to the max.
Be present with what you are doing.
Trying to multitask is killing your productivity.
Remember productivity is like football - One play at a time.
If you have earbuds in your ears when you are trying to learn something else you are not being present and it’s part of what’s stressing you out. I’m not talking about listening to music when you wash dishes or do a chore like that.
Concern yourself with your future. These next few months are extremely important.
The friends you make, the future contacts with your teachers are valuable, and this is when you should be setting some kind of aim for your life.
Remember school is to help you see enough to aim at what you want in life.
I’m convinced that 30 years of your life can fly by on a path you don’t want if you are unmotivated your senior year.
Sure you can change, but it’s easier to put the train on the track now.
Remember you can do it - you can.
I’d recommend listening to “A graduation speech I would want to hear” S2 EP 38.
Respect is the hardest thing to gain quickly and the easiest thing to lose quickly. Why do we respect some people and not others? Do the things in this podcast and you'll most definitely build quality respect with people.
No one likes to be told no. No one likes telling other people no, especially your own kids. However, being told no and learning to tell others no may be what the world needs most right now. Let's take a journey together with this podcast episode and find out the 7 benefits of telling someone NO. I'd love to know what you think about this episode. If you like it please consider giving me a 5-star review on Apple podcasts or a written review. Feel free to contact me with questions at our website tapodcast.net.
Welcome to Season 3! Some of the seven involve working with each other, some involve working on yourself. None of which are easy. The hell with easy. We can make this coming year better than the last two. Here are seven things that you can do immediately, that I believe will help. Take a breath, have a sip of coffee, and enjoy the season opener. Crank it up.
Don’t join team MSNBC or team FOX.

Work on yourself
New year’s resolutions are you making one?
What is a resolution?: A firm decision to do or not do something. A pledge, intention, or decision to work on a project to better yourself.
I’ve asked a lot of people if they have any new years resolution and the vast majority say no. Why? - No doubt it’s fear of failure.
People think why put yourself through something hard that has a very high probability of failure. I get that!
A pledge, intention, or decision to work on a project to better yourself - Should you do that? How is the answer not yes?
In season one I answered a student’s question, “What if I don’t feel good enough?” (Season 1 episode 8).
Saying you’re good enough or something is just good enough is drawing a finish line and that’s not good.
We all have stuff to work on - How is life not a continuous path of improving ourselves?
You should definitely check out S2 Ep 7-9 on how to set goals, break bad habits and start new ones.
Goals can be overwhelming and if you set what I call a doomed goal because it’s too broad like “I want to be more healthy” or “I want to get ripped” or “ I want to be more productive.” These goals have great intentions but you can’t measure them at all.
Goals can be also overwhelming if you set them too focused. Like if you chart out where you want to be everyday for the next 6 months. Or like if you say I want to lose 30 lbs. If you lose 19lbs are you a failure?
Instead have goals like: I’m not going to touch my phone for the first hour of the day, or until I’m out of the shower and had breakfast. Or everyday I’m going to put my shoes on, walk outside and take at least 10 steps. Or I’m going to read for 2 minutes per day and set the book where you can’t miss it. What can happen then is you can become a person that does those things?
Compare yourself to who you were yesterday.
I have your new year’s resolution for ya. How about being outrageously kind to people? The world would instantly become a better place. Come with Kim Tatman and me as we talk about the “Dude, be kind” movement and her huge successes in spreading kindness across the country. If you liked this episode please consider saying thanks by giving me a 5-star review or written review at apple podcasts. Special guests Alexis Stokes and Taylor Hites join me discussing 5 questions that they picked out. This fun episode will make you smile and maybe think about the meaning of success differently. As always thanks for listening and sharing this with friends.
How do you stop beating yourself up?
a. You wouldn't say stuff as you suck, you loser, you are never going to be able to do that.
b. You would be supportive but in a real way.
a. All other people are also struggling
b. You have to understand that no matter what, no one has it all together all the time.
c. Be present with what you are feeling
i. Don't try to fight it - because you'll constantly be thinking about it.
ii. Don't fight for it - If you argue for your limits and weaknesses you become that.
iii. There is no perfection - Do not catastrophize everything.
iv. Be accepting of yourself and your flaws but also figure out what it is you need to work on. Like someone is taking care of you. What would they tell you?
v. Use the word YET. I'm not where I want to be yet. I don't read as much as I want to yet. I don't have as many friends as it want yet. Etc (This gives you something to work on)
a. Sure you can say stuff like "Hey negative thought, I'm shutting you down!" However, if people knew how to do that we wouldn't have this problem. If you dwell on it you create it permanently. Imagine saying that to a student, hey just shut it down? Don't you think they/everyone already know that?? So how do you fight it?
b. How do you get confidence?
i. By doing, not by thinking about it…by doing something, and most of the time for someone else.
a. Ted talk study about how people get stuck in the negative
i. Survey of doctors about a procedure that has a 70% success rate and the other group was presented a 30% failure rate. Group A looked at this at first favorable but when presented like group B they looked at it unfavorably. Group B stayed negative even when looking at it like group A after they were presented 70% success rate.
a. Steve Harvey talks about the foreman on the positive side of the brain and the foreman on the left side of the brain.
b. Being grateful.

This is a problem! There is enough information out there to find expert opinions on anything you want to think is true. The question is what is true? This may help you known when to question things and when to accept the truth. Sometimes we don't ask enough questions and sometimes we overthink everything.

Life turning out sounds like a finish line to me. Does it ever really turn out? Is this just the end of a chapter? Also in this episode is "How can I make myself have reasonable goals rather than impossible dreams?" Good stuff on the way to or from work. Put it in your ears! Thanks as always for listening. - Sam
This episode answers a couple of questions about effective ways to listen to each other but arrives at not focusing on the little bit of bad in things. Instead, maybe we should see all of the 99% good in things and not hyper-focus on the negative. Would life be better? I'm not saying we should ignore the bad stuff, but we are constantly being saturated with the small amounts of negativity in the biggest way possible in the media. We may be becoming victims of it. This is just a reminder to see the good stuff too!

After combining all the expert advice into one list, here are 11 strategies to reduce cell phone use and screen time. Be sure to listen all the way to number 11, it's a Sam Griffin original and may get you to realize there is a problem. This is part 3 so make sure to listen to episodes 24 and 26 first. Webb, Certified Fund Specialist, Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor, has a degree in Finance from Montana State University and is the founder of Webb Financial Group, LLC - a firm dedicated to helping financially savvy families, small businesses, and charitable organizations plan for a more confident tomorrow.
Would you rather lose your phone or your wallet? In this episode, I make a strong case that it's possible that students may not be reaching a state of focus. Like ever. If it takes 20 min to re-enter a state of focus, is your phone going off more than every 20 min? We are in uncharted waters created by cell phones and increased screen time. As always on the tapodcast, I'm not telling you what to do, I'm trying to get you to think, reflect, and improve. Although this episode can stand alone, make sure to listen to part 1 first, S2|EP 24.

Can we talk about cell phone addiction? The average teenage screen time is 9 hours. The average time spent out side is less than 10 min. Can we talk about cell phone addiction? 60% of people admit to having an addiction to their cell phone. Are the rest in denial? Can we talk about cell phone addiction?

Graduation is a huge milestone. It is a high school finish line and a work starting line. I look at it as a launch pad where you need to do at least these four things: Have a plan, be open to change, learn as you go, and work your butt off.
In 2010 I had an ultra driven student named Shala Wallace. Then an enthusiastic cosmetology student and competitor at the national SkillsUSA competition, and now, a high school physics teacher. Join Shala and I as we discuss her amazing journey out of high school, all across the country, and landing on the "other side of the desk." What an amazing, surreal experience to sit down with a former student of mine in her own classroom! Don't miss this episode and don't forget to share it with friends. The first of the where are they now series! This is an interview I did with my son Vince, who was a former student of mine and is currently studying Computer Engineering at Akron University. On this show I roll dice, randomly select and give quick answers to many questions I have from the greatest hits folder. This really fun episode is recorded game show style and is meant to address serious issues in a fun, light hearted way.
This was an anonymous question from a student this year. Remember this podcast is a political opinion free zone. We are going to break this down Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung style and go into the world of archetypes. Have you ever thought that when you think of the Nike brand you think of a hero? You'll see that our past president was such a strong character, an no matter what you thought of him, you couldn't stop listening. This episode, like all shows on this podcast, is designed to make you think not make you mad. So relax and enjoy.
When things don't go according to plan, who or what do you blame? Do you take absolute responsibility for your actions or blame it on the dog, weather, teachers, clock, calendar and politics? Let me prove to you life is better when the needle points more towards an internal locus of control. If you are liking this the way to say thanks is with a 5 star review at Apple Podcasts. Don't ever forget patience is not only a choice, it's your choice. In this episode we go over how to build patience with people and flex it like a muscle. Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset. I can tell you from experience, being impatient is weakness.
Your passion is not able to be delivered to your door from Amazon. So, how do you find it? If your dream is to start a business and you have no action plan, you have only a dream. This exists only in your imagination, not in reality. Your passion will come from the process of making your dream a project.
As my students say, "This one hits different." To achieve a goal, you must develop daily rituals that lead to habits. When you continually do a productive behavior, it will rewrite your brain, and you can become who you want to be once and for all. Thanks for listening to the Teacher Answers Podcast. If you wanna help me consider leaving me a 5 star review at Apple Podcasts. If you have an idea or question for the show email me teacheranswers@gmail.com
This approach will rocket you forward. Once you have a good system in place, results come naturally. Goals can be achieved and remain long term with a proper systematic approach. If you focus on your goals too much you can decrease your chance of achieving them. Systems are what get you to the goal.
There is no silver bullet or life hack to achieving something difficult, only persistent hard work. If your goal isn't clear enough, you have no chance of gaining ground on it or finishing it. In this episode I share everything I've learned from past failure and research on how to clarify your goal into something you can develop into a system to achieve anything you want.
If you want to better yourself almost overnight, I challenge you to accept this assignment. This will not be easy, but come with me as we explore what happens when you accept the idea that you can achieve anything and what happens when you do nothing. Do not shy away from this exercise, because it will be the most powerful thinking and writing you've experienced. In this podcast exercise you will define your source of motivation, which is key to achieving your most important goals. If you are liking this and you want to help me out, consider leaving me a five star review on the apple podcast site and sharing it with like minded people. Don't hesitate to email me at teacheranswers@gmail.com with comments or questions for the show. Thanks for your support!

A dream is a goal without a project. If you are going after your dream, you need a project and a project manager. For this I prefer OneNote. Join me as I share why this will better organize things for you, and exactly how I set my OneNote project manager up. This is the final installment of the killer apps. I hope you enjoyed it. You may need to take notes on this episode.
The reasons I like OneNote[my ramblings]

The mind is meant to create things not remember things. Todoist is the best task manager I've ever used, because it allows us to take the pressure off of trying to remember all the birthdates, times, practices, homework assignments, and events, and frees up your mind to make progress on what's important. In this episode I also explain the Feynman technique and use it to show you why you need Todoist . If you want more clarity in what you are really trying to accomplish, morning pages is for you. This specific type of journaling has blown my mind, and in this episode, I tell you exactly how and why I've been doing this over the past few weeks and the changes it's making. I urge you to try this for at least a week. If you do you'll quickly realize how much gunk and toxic garbage we have in our thoughts, holding us back, and causing fear of failure. Feedback? Ideas? Email me at teacheranswers@gmail.com.
Don't wait for a near death experience to wake you up and realize you have a lot to accomplish. Get going! This show wakes you up like a cup of Starbucks. Go. Life is short you'd better go for it. Stuff this show in your ears and let me show you how. Thanks so much for listening, sharing, and reviewing. Keep kicking butt in life.

Being of the coolest people I know, Dr Cindy Price shares advice on how to deal with loss. Sometimes we never know what to say or how to say it, when someone experiences the loss of a loved one. I learned a lot doing this interview and I hope it helps you in some way. I'm still reflecting on the "scars vs scabs" metaphor. Please forgive some spots in the audio in this episode, occasionally the levels get a little off. Last episode of 2020! Looking forward to next year -thanks for listening.
Sam
When you teach a subject like physics you dig into the laws that make the physical world behave the way it does. This question will come up when you start talking about gravity, space, universe and so on. I've been asked this question a hundred times and I've found a way to answer this question in a non offensive way. Thanks for listening everyone. One more episode left in 2020. I also got the sound right on this episode and I think it's my best recording.
In this episode I interview one of the most extraverted people I know - our full time sub Denny Polvinale. We discuss a wide range of topics including how to break out of your shell and have fun, even when it's uncomfortable, and one of the most insightful things I've heard when I ask Denny what his advice is for students. It's my pleasure to bring a little Mr P into your life, and it's impossible to not be uplifted by this interview, so enjoy! If you'd like to say thanks, consider giving the show a 5 star review on apple podcast and sharing it with someone that's never heard of the T.A.P. - Sam
I wrapped up 4 student questions about teaching into one answer. I've been saying this for over 20 years and my answer still stands. If a teacher at least does these 2 things they will have more control in the classroom and better student learning.
Welcome to the final installment of the holiday shopping guide. Part 2 focuses on what men should buy women for Christmas. This one is way more complex than ep 56. Enjoy and happy holidays.
It's the holiday shopping guide - part 1. This is a humorous episode containing what I think women should buy men for Christmas. Parts of the audio appeared in my YouTube video years ago. Students ask me this question all the time around this time of year. Remember it's supposed to be funny so relax and enjoy. Sorry about the audio being a little strange. Here is a link to the actual video watch it after the podcast https://youtu.be/3vbA6S15Km4
This is an interview I did with my son's favorite science teacher David Mowry. The interview is called "What is Science and why does it change?" I think there are a lot of people that don't understand science is a fluid subject that is constantly changing, and with the pandemic this has driven people to lose trust in it. Episode 55 next Tuesday gives numerous examples throughout history of how science evolves and changes. Thanks for the support and faithful listening. Happy holidays and if you still haven't binged all the shows I'll put a bunch of my favorites in the comments that you may have missed. You will level up if you listen.
When the universe tries to tell you what to do - you should listen to it. If you don't know what I mean, in episode 54, I talk about four examples of this. Welcome to the feel good episode! Thanks so much for listening and sharing
Around the holidays students tend to get behind and overwhelmed with their work. If you are feeling the crunch of being behind this episode is for you. Do not miss this one and be sure to share it with friends.
Do not put a limit on what you learn. Since most teenagers are searching for what they want to do for a career, learning a broad range of subjects and skills could inspire someone to pursue something they thought they weren't interested in. Sometimes your new passion is right around the corner - don't limit yourself or someone else.
What is it like leading a vocational school for the first time and doing it during a pandemic? I interview my superintendent Matthew Sheridan and find out how he's keeping it all together. We talk about everything ranging from philosophies of leadership to favorite pizza places. Do not miss it.
Help me celebrate 50 episodes with a double feature set of questions. "I'm too shy, how do I become more outgoing?" This is a quick message to all who voted. Apathy is the devil. Thanks for not being apathetic.
A student asks about how to deal with perfectionism and how to not let it hold you back. Are you limited by trying to make everything perfect? Do you think about the worst case scenario all the time? I'm looking for a self declared perfectionist to be on the show one day. If you claim to be a perfectionist and you feel it holds you back in life, email me at teacheranswers@gmail.com.
Special thanks to Sam Gianettino and Jalena Laipply for helping clarify how great customer service should look. In this episode we talk about what should be happening when dealing with customers, good phone skills, dealing with angry customers, appropriate use of cell phones and many other topics.
A video called "What is school for?" got me thinking about the purpose of school. When this youtuber gets tens of millions of views ripping apart public education, I feel like I need to defend it. Please watch the video at least once before listening to this podcast - it's better to watch it twice. This is also an exercise in how something makes you feel vs what is actually being said. While I agree with about half of this, I feel the other half is dangerous. Inhale and enjoy the podcast.

If you are struggling getting homework completed at home, this episode is for you. This is the talk I gave my students to teach them how to prioritize tasks so that they don't get behind. Organize school work and set things in order. When you listen to this episode you'll realize this can be applied to anyone's life.
You hate masks. I hate masks. I don't know one person that likes wearing a mask. I have been asked this question so many times this year, so here is my answer. Don't worry, there is no politics on the podcast. This episode is a bit of a bummer, but there is an underlying reason people don't want to comply with rules in general. Welcome to the mask episode. If you have a comment or would like to submit a question email me at teacheranswers@gmail.com.
Alexis Hartnell and Taylor Hites help me answer the question "What is it like being a new teacher?" Being a new teacher is a ridiculously stressful job, and with the added stress of a pandemic all teachers need some good advice. These two amazing young teachers have it together and share their fresh ideas with us. Enjoy and thanks for listening and remember...Share it with a friend.

How would you handle this COVID schedule if you were in our shoes? Students want to know how I would handle a COVID hybrid learning model if I were in their shoes. In this episode I outline a plan for success for students that's easy to follow and simple to understand.
This one is my new favorite. Deputy John Howe sits down with me and discusses the mindset of a police officer. Absolutely everyone should hear this so please share this with friends and get John's message out to those you know. I'm asking all of you listening to this to tell a friend about it. I have so much respect for John and his story - PLEASE SHARE IT. We all need to sit down and talk to each other more than we do. As always thanks for your support and for listening.
Sleeping in class is an issue that may be more than just staying up late. Are you addicted to sugar? Several years ago I did the "real food" diet and experienced what life is like not being addicted to sugar for 30 days. I'm convinced that if you are eating normal -pizza, fast food, cereal, stuff out of a bag, white bread, you are addicted to sugar.

If you want to stop being a victim, you must understand the mindset of a bully. I threw myself at this as hard as I could, even doing some acting in this episode. This is everything I've learned about the bully mindset - motivations, creation, tactics and vulnerabilities. This is required listening for anyone dealing with bullying, which is just about everyone in some capacity. If it's not you, it could be your child or friend. This may be a very difficult episode to get through, but study it. This is important information and I'm asking you to share this episode and podcast with people you care about.
We explore why people bully others, and get bullied by others. Episode 20 is part 1 of 6 in the Bullying series dealing with the following: What are the types of bullying? What are the facts parents and students need to be aware of? What exactly is self esteem? How does bullying contribute to teen suicide? Bullying is one of the most sensitive subjects that you could have a conversation about, and I believe what I've uncovered in this 6 part series can help to reduce bullying. I hope you share the heck out of these episodes, it may actually matter to someone. Go back to school armed with this knowledge. If you are new to the show, you can always email me at teacheranswers@gmail.com to submit questions for future episodes. Please concentrate when listening to this, the best way is to go for a walk while listening.
