Gene Wensel graciously shares stories of floating Jay Massey's Moose John River in Alaska with his friend Paul Bruner in pursuit of moose and caribou. Jay was one of the most incredible outdoorsmen in modern times and defined the best parts of traditional bowhunting while living the ethics of the hunt. Join us this week as Dalton sits down with Clay Epperson, a hog's absolute worst nightmare. Clay lives in Texas, and finds himself chasing hogs all night more times than not. His approach is unique, and extremely fun. He has been particularly successful in recent weeks, as environmental factors have had the hogs up early and often. This week we are joined by two fellow PBS members, Eric Lindner and Ethan Neidhart. Eric is a long time traditional bowhunter. Ethan is a 19 year old bowhunter that decided to start building bows at the age of 16, and took it upon his self to learn the craft. As fate would have it, he then met Eric and the mentoring began. This is a great story and classic example of what traditional bowhunting, as well as what PBS is all about!
At the recent PBS gathering in Lexington, we had the pleasure to meet a couple of great guys that are as ate up with traditional bowhunting as we are! Fernando and Poncho operate Stickbow Hunts, MX in Durango, Mexico. They offer hunts for Gould's turkey, Coues deer, hogs, and javelina. After visiting with them in Lexington, it didn't take us long to book a trip! They are in beautiful country in the Sierra Madre's, have fantastic accommodations, and lots of critters.... what more could a bowhunter ask for?!
This week Norm Johnson joins Ethan for a recap of the 2024 Lexington, Ky PBS Gathering. It was a fantastic time had by all and one of the most successful gatherings to date. With record attendance, donations, and new attendees, it was a lot to keep up with but very much worth the effort!

Like many young people, high school, college, and starting the process of finding your way in life can lead to drifting away from that love. Fortunately, those distractions tend to ease a bit and the love for the outdoors returns with a passion. Cade is a prime example of this and talks about his return to bowhunting with a deeper love that we all share. That solo spirit was shared by the late Bart Schleyer of Wyoming. Bart lived an incredible life and was very likely among one of the best bowhunters and woodsman to ever carry a stick and string. As well as being kindred spirits, Mike and Bart were also friends. On this episode Mike shares stories about Bart's life and adventures.
This week we're joined by Matt Beisswanger of Pennsylvania. Matt has been hunting a small farm in the Midwest for over two decades. In that time he's learned the property intimately, and puts a ton of time into scouting, learning individual deer, and keeping up with the subtle changes on the farm and the surrounding area... all part of great woodsmanship. Time spent with good friends is always time well spent, but time spent with good friends on a wilderness adventure can't be beat!!

Every serious whitetail hunter knows about Mel Johnson's world record typical archery buck, scoring 204 1/2". Many of us older bowhunters can remember staring wide eyed at glossy images of Mel and the giant in the pages of Outdoor Life and bowhunting magazines long ago. But not to many people likely know much about Mel himself. Humble and very down to earth, Mel didn't seek the attention and fame that could have easily came along with taking such a magnificent animal. Mel was a father figure, mentor, and friend to our buddy Rick Snell, and this week Rick shares some of the memories he and Mel shared along the way, from the Midwest to Alaska. Super cool glimpse into the man so many of us know of, but not many of know about.

Time is drawing near and soon those bachelor groups we've all been watching will start disbursing, antler will turn hard, testosterone will increase, and food sources will start to change. As bowhunters, our job is to figure out how deer will adapt and relocate them. There are a lot of subtleties that effect how animals move and use their surroundings. By the late 1800's, bowhunting was almost completely a thing of the past. There were a few men that kept the flame alive and were able to pass along the knowledge that was almost forgotten. Along the way pioneers like Will and Maurice Thompson, Ishsi, Will Compton, F.S. Barnes, Art Young, Saxton Pope, Glenn St.Charles, and Fred Bear led by example and paved the way for those of us that have come to love the simple art of traditional bowhunting.

Along the way, he's amassed some pretty cool adventures, including a few hair raising ones he shares with us this week. From grizzly and brown bear charges, wolf encounters, and lessons learned, to perspectives and the wonderful things we as bowhunters are privileged to witness in the field, this episode has it all!

From funny stories of past hunts, to little know facts and tricks he's learned along the way, if you want to hunt black bears you won't want to miss this one. This week our buddy Chris Parrino drops by for a chat. This episode was an off the cuff discussion with Chris about hunting grizzly, brown bear, and polar bear. Chris has taken several of these bears with a traditional bow, and not many people can make that claim. Chris is also the type of guy that never brags about what he's done, but he's done a lot! This week Dalton and Ethan sit down with Bill Thompson of Spartan Forge. Bill spent a large portion of his 20 years of service in the military predicting the movements and targeting of the bad guys. Using those skills, he has developed a mapping application that also utilizes decades of scientific research on whitetail deer to help hunters process information effecting deer habits and movement patterns. Spartan Forge isn't your typical "when to hunt app". Rather, it's a great tool to compliment a hunters woodsmanship skills and a single source for weather conditions, terrain features, moon phases, etc... and breaks down specific areas in the country to help hunters process the information that can help us to be more successful. In this episode, Bill breaks down some of the scientific data that has come from research facilities from across the nation.

Tom holds the record for the most points scored in a single game at Montana State, as well as the lead season average, was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. He is a long time PBS member, was hunting with Paul Schafer, is a world famous fly fisherman, was one of the first modern bowhunters, and one of the first American bowhunters to hunt Russia along with his buddy Paul Brunner, and was one of the first modern bowhunters in the country to decoy whitetail deer, in fact he literally wrote the book on it. But above all of that, Tom is just a great, down to earth guy that loves to chase critters with a stick and string! You won't want to miss this one!

Named one of the most 25 influential bowhunters in the last 25 years by Archery Business Magazine in 2001, Dan Quillian was a true pioneer in the sport of bowhunting and one whom we owe a debt of gratitude. Dan was a founding member of the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia, owner of Archery Traditions, a custom bowyer, produced the first commercial tree stand on the market, fought for bowhunting seasons in Georgia, hunted all over North America, and was a great ambassador for bowhunting, as well as a true conservationist well ahead of his time. We had the opportunity to chat with Dan's son Dee Dee Quillian and one time employee and friend of Dan, Buck Ernst. The stories told of Dan's adventures and passion for bowhunting are fascinating, and we really enjoyed hearing them. We're positive you will to!
THis week we catch u p with Maribeth Kulynycz of Maryland. Maribeth is the real deal and is definitely "our kind of people"! Growing up in a hunting family she made the transition to bowhunting in her early 20's, but after discovering the traditional bow she hasn't looked back since. Intelligent, well spoken, dedicated to traditional bowhunting, and most importantly in it for the right reasons. Our friend Pat Cebuhar recently reached out to us with an audio file containing an interview with the late Jerry Pierce. Pat was a close freind and hunting partner of Jerry's and joins us for a brief look back at who Jerry was, followed by a rare interview with Jerry condcted by Don Owens back in 1994. It's a rare glimpse into somewhat recent bowhunting history. Those that knew or know of Jerry are well aware of the contributions that he made to the sport of not just traditional bowhunting, but bowhunting in general. Jerry loved hunting with a bow and arrow and gave of himself tirelessly in order to promote his passion in order to promote the sport he loved. A few episodes ago our buddy Dennis Jackson told us a young mans story from a recent PBS membership hunt, and suggested we have him on the podcast. It took about half a secod to convince us! This week we sit down with Ross Pennebaker and Scott Record for an awesome chat. Ross is a 15 yr old young man who has a passion for all things outdoors, and all on his own deciede he wanted to be a bowhunter. With a littel help from some the PBS membership, Scott was able to procure him a bow set up and Ross took it from there and made it happen pretty much all on his own. This chapter of his story culminates to him taking his first buck on the Land Between the Lakes PBS membership hunt! Alan and I had a fantastic time listenting to the excitement in this young mans stories. Ross is not only a newly dedicated traditional bowhunter, but more importantly he is a fine young man and we're confident he will go on to be a very positive influence in the world of traditonal bowhunting!

Eirc McKee and Vance Henry joined us back on episode 72 to discuss their upcoming hunt for Alaskan moose. Both experienced bowhunters, were venturing north for their first adventure in the Last Frontier. The discussed the challenges and logistics of planning a hunt like this for the first time. On this episode we discuss something that is often overlooked, bow hunting big bucks vs bow hunting deer. We all love to dream about that big trophy buck slipping into bow range, but depending on where you live or hunt or what your perspective is will define what the word "trophy" means. Any deer taken with a bow and arrow under fair chase is more than qualified to be called a trophy. It's easy to forget that in todays constant barrage of social media posts and advertisements. Back then if you bowhunted, you did so with a recurve or longbow because that's all there was.
