She briefly took up figure skating before taking up in-line speed skating because she wanted to move faster than the music allowed. As an inline skater, she won multiple World Championship gold medals on the US relay team before transitioning to ice speed skating in 2009. It was the perfect fit. While this was the start of Kelly’s road to becoming an Olympian, she could have never predicted the obstacles that came her way. Despite having a learning disability as a student, facing setbacks in her skating career, and nearly losing her entire foot on the ice in a double compound fracture, Kelly found a way to come back each time - earning her the nickname, “The Comeback Kid.” Her story is one of incredible resiliency and determination. During this time, he experimented with various positions, until finally landing on the defensive line. This ultimately led to his incredibly successful rookie debut with the Chicago Bears during Week 1 of the Season. For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Becky Moran. Becky Moran, CMAA is the Athletic Director at Round Lake High School. She has served in this capacity for 3 years and has worked in interscholastic athletic administration for 19 years at various high schools in the Chicagoland area. She has coached soccer and volleyball at the high school and collegiate level. She earned a BS in Sport and Fitness Management from the University of Wisconsin – Parkside. She then furthered her education at Dominican University and Ohio University where she earned a master’s in educational leadership and athletic administration respectively. In addition to her role as a high school athletic director, she serves her professional associations on the Board of Directors at both the state and national level. She serves the Illinois Athletic Director’s Association as the professional development coordinator, a position she has had for the last fourteen years. She was recently recognized by the association as the 3A/4A Athletic Director of the Year for the work she has done in her school and state. She is also the current President-Elect for the NIAAA Board of Directors after being selected as an at-large candidate in 2020. She has presented courses and workshops at multiple state and national conference and continues to look for ways to grow as a professional while simultaneously growing and promoting the profession of athletic administration. She is a lifetime resident of Lake County, Illinois where she with her husband, Patrick, and two children, Wyatt 16 and Halle 15.

For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Dr. Matt Wiest, a chiropractor and the owner of The Center of Movement which has multiple locations throughout Minnesota. Matt grew up in Enchant, Alberta, Canada, a small farming community just east of the Rocky Mountains. After high school, Matt spent three years in Vancouver playing junior hockey before moving to Wisconsin to play college hockey at the University of Wisconsin – Superior where he earned his Bachelor of Exercise Science in Wellness and Fitness Management. During his time at the University of Wisconsin – Superior, Matt was on the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) All Academic Team as well as serving on the student government as Communications Director for the University representing the voice of the student body. Matt continued his education in Davenport, Iowa at Palmer College of Chiropractic where he earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. It was through his experience in athletics that Matt’s passion for chiropractic grew. For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Eric McMahon, the Coaching and Sport Science Program Manager at the NSCA Headquarters in Colorado Springs. He joined the NSCA Staff in 2020 with over 15-years of coaching experience, including roles with the Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the MLB Europe Programs. From 2009-19, McMahon was a Strength and Conditioning Coach in the Texas Rangers Organization. He served as the Assistant Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator from 2016-17, and was promoted to Major League Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2018-19. McMahon began working in professional baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers as a Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coach from 2006-08. He holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach with Distinction (RSCC*D) designation from the NSCA. McMahon holds a masters in Exercise Science from Springfield College, where he served as an Anatomy and Physiology Instructor, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with baseball, football, golf, men's lacrosse, men's soccer, and women's volleyball from 2005-07. Prior to Springfield, in 2004-05, he was an Assistant Football / Strength and Conditioning Coach at Middlebury College in his home state of Vermont. As an undergraduate at St. Lawrence University, McMahon majored in biology while playing center for the football team.

For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Dr. Lauren Casella, Academic Program Director for the Catholic School Leadership Academy and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Administration in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University. Before entering higher education, Dr. Casella served Catholic elementary schools within the Chicago Archdiocese for ten years as a teacher at St. John of the Cross Parish School in Western Springs IL and as a teacher, administrator, and Principal at The Frances Xavier Warde School in Chicago, IL. Prior to joining LMU as a full-time faculty member, Dr. Casella served as a faculty lecturer in SOE’s Elementary and Secondary Education Department. In the role, she taught courses on curriculum and instructional leadership and earned senior lecturer status. Dr. Casella holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from LMU, a master’s degree in Leadership and Supervision from Loyola University Chicago, and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Teacher Education in Multicultural Societies from University of Southern California.

For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Dr. Timothy Dohrer, director of the Master of Science in Education program at Northwestern University. He is the former principal of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Illinois. In a career spanning more than 25 years, Dohrer has taught middle school, high school and college students in rural, urban, and suburban settings and served as a long-term New Trier administrator and teacher. He first became an instructor in the Master of Science in Education program in 2004 while he was teaching English at the Northfield campus of New Trier High School. Since then, Dohrer worked in the areas of curriculum and instruction as well as research and academic services at New Trier. As New Trier principal, Dohrer led one of the largest and most successful schools in the country, supervising a staff of 450 employees and a student population of 3,100 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. His current areas of research include teacher education, teacher leadership, curriculum & instruction, assessment, literacy, school climate, and social & emotional learning. Dr. Dohrer earned his BA in English and Journalism from Indiana University, his MA in English from Northwestern University, and his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University.

For today’s episode, Jim is joined by Dr. Robert Higgins, Director of the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Higgins is the leading authority in heart and lung transplantation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and mechanical circulatory support. His scientific interests include the mechanisms of cell injury in failing hearts, health economics and policy, racial disparities in post-transplant outcomes, access to care and improving outcomes among heart failure and cardiac surgery patients. Before his role at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Higgins served at The Ohio State University, where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery, as well as surgeon-in-chief and director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Higgins obtained his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and went on to earn his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine, followed by a master’s degree in health services administration at Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a residency in general surgery and served as chief resident at the University Hospitals of Pittsburgh. He was a Winchester Scholar and fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Higgins served as a senior registrar in transplantation at the renowned Papworth Hospital, the U.K.’s largest cardiothoracic surgical program and its main heart-lung transplant center. He also served as a Major in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps.

For today’s episode, Jim sits down with Director of Strength & Conditioning at Purdue University, Jason Pullara. Coach Pullara returned to the Boilermakers from Northwestern, where he worked for 18 years. Coach Pullara served as the sports performance coach for the Northwestern women’s lacrosse program during all seven of its NCAA championships from 2005 to 2012. He was also the sports performance coach for the softball program, which earned NCAA Tournament bids in seven of his seasons with the program, finishing among the top 16 teams in the country in 2005 and 2008 while placing second at the Women's College World Series in 2006 and third in 2007. Coach Pullara is Master Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise & fitness and a minor in psychology from Purdue in 2001. He earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Northwestern in 2011. As an undergraduate, Pullara played rugby. A two-year team captain, he was a three-time all-conference selection and team Most Valuable Player and two-time All-Midwest Regional pick.

He has previously served as the head strength and conditioning coach for three different NCAA Division I FBS programs and is in his third season as head football strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Tech. Prior to his current role, Coach Caralla spent the 2018 season as the head strength and conditioning coach at Buffalo, where he was named Football Scoop’s Strength Coach of the Year. Before his time at Buffalo, Caralla was director of strength and conditioning at Louisiana-Lafayette (2016-17) and North Texas (2015). His career also includes stints as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan (2012-14), Mississippi State (2011) and Georgia Tech (2010-11), a graduate assistant at Mississippi State (2009-10) and an intern at Virginia (2008) and South Florida (2007). As an athlete, Coach Caralla was a two-time all-conference running back at Defiance (Ohio) College, where he also earned academic all-conference accolades twice and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in wellness and corporate fitness in 2008. He earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from Mississippi State in 2010.

For today’s episode we are joined by Aaron Willits, head football coach at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Prior to taking the head job at Knox, Coach Willits was the Offensive Coordinator at Concordia College in Minnesota. In his nine years with the Cobbers, the team had an overall record of 62 - 28 and a record of 48 - 24 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). On top of his Offensive Coordinator role, Willits also served as Recruiting Coordinator, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Equipment Manager for the Cobbers. Coach Willits is not only the new Head Football Coach at Knox College, but he is also an alumnus from the Class of 2008. During his playing career he earned All-Midwest Conference honors as a senior and was voted the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2007. Coach Willits graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and secondary education.

He was named Head Coach in 2019 after spending three years as an Assistant Coach at North Central College. Keenan is a 2017 graduate of Benedictine University with a degree in exercise sports studies, where he was a three-year letterwinner on the men’s lacrosse team. A three-year starter at attack for the Eagles, Keenan finished his career ranked third among Benedictine leaders in career points (101) and career goals (78). He earned Second Team All-Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) in 2015 as a sophomore and was named to the MLC All-Sportsmanship Team in 2016.

Coach Hohensee spent 21 years as the Head Coach of eight different AFL teams, posting 170 career wins, and guided Chicago to the Arena Bowl XX title in 2006. During his playing career, Coach Hohensee earned a spot on the All-American Strength Team while at Minnesota. He played professionally in the NFL, AFL, USFL and Canadian Football League. He has coached youth, high school, college, and professional players for 46 years. He has been inducted into several Hall of Fames including the AFL Hall of Fame, The University of Minnesota Gophers’ Hall of Fame, the MT San Antonio Junior College Hall of Fame, and the Rowland High School Hall of Fame.

Coach Hansen has been working with athletes all ages and abilities in speed, strength and power sports since 1988. His coaching career started in Track and Field, providing instruction to sprinters of all ages eventually working with collegiate sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. His career evolved rapidly working closely with some of the top performers in the world as a coach and a consultant – including Olympic medalists, world record holders, Canadian National team athletes, and professional athletes from numerous sports. He worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Simon Fraser University for 14 years, the first non-US member of the NCAA. He also serves as a performance consultant to numerous professional teams in the NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL, as well as major NCAA Division 1 programs throughout North America, specializing in speed development, strategic performance planning, return-to-competition protocols and neuromuscular electrical stimulation programming. Derek is asked to speak on speed development and high performance training on a regular basis for major events around the world and has also authored a number of books, chapters and journal articles on these subjects.

Dr. Hewett is a former Director of The Biomechanics Laboratories and Sports Medicine Research Center at Mayo Clinic, Director of the Sports Health & Performance Institute at The Ohio State University, Professor and Director of Sports Medicine Research at OSU, and Professor and Director of the Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Research Foundation. He was a Professor in Sports Medicine, Family Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, Physiology and Cell Biology and Biomedical Engineering and Allied Health Professions at The OSU, Pediatrics and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Professor in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Hewett possesses a doctorate in Physiology and Biophysics and a postdoctoral fellowships in Molecular Biology & Biomechanics, Pharmacolgy and Cell Biophysics and Human Biomechanics. Over four hundred of his research articles have appeared in peer-reviewed medical journals, with over 50,000 citations of his work in the medical literature. Dr. Hewett has an h-index over 113 and his research has received numerous awards, including the Excellence in Research Award, The O’donohue Award and the NCAA Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, The Rose Excellence in Research Award from The American Physical Therapy Association, The Research to Reality and Clint Thompson Awards from National Athletic Trainers Associations and the Young Investigator Award from the American Heart Association Dr. Hewett is a Fellow of American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Orthopaedic Research Society & American Physiological Society.

For today’s episode we are joined by Chris Morris, Director of Applied Sport Science at the University of Kentucky. He is responsible for developing and implementing the best practice strategies to reduce injury risk and enhance readiness, performance, and recovery for the Wildcats’ football team as well as with men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s soccer. The Lawrenceburg, Ky., native returned to the Bluegrass after one season as the Director of Applied Sports Science at the University of Texas. Prior to Texas, he spent two years in UK football’s high-performance department as a sports scientist. He is also the Owner of Performance Training Academy in Lexington which serves as a consultant regarding the implementation and analysis of heart rate variability and brain direct current potentials data. Dr. Morris has earned three degrees from Kentucky: bachelor’s degree in marketing, master’s degree in exercise science, and doctorate in exercise science in. As an athlete, Dr. Morris was a punter for the Wildcats football team from 2002-05.

On today’s episode we are joined by Angela Lewis. Angela is a former professional basketball player, championship winning coach and author who is passionate about empowering the lives of young women. To date she’s published three books, The Game Changing Assist: Six Simple Ways to Choose Success, The Game Changing Assist Workbook and Post Moves: The Female Athlete’s Guide to Dominate Life After College which focus on providing a roadmap for young women to accomplish their goals. A recognized leader Lewis was awarded the Robin Roberts Sports Communication Award, honored by Black Girls Rock St. Louis, and received the Distinguished Young Professional in Education and Youth Empowerment from the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. A St. Louis native, Lewis received a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at St. Louis University. In four years, Lewis scored over 1,000 points, grabbed over 500 rebounds and went on to play in Germany. After playing Angela coached at Metro High School, Webster University, Southeast Missouri State University and Marquette University. Most notably, she helped lead the St. Louis Surge, professional women’s basketball team, to a National Championship in 2014.

Jim and friend of the project/recurring guest Hugh Williams sit down with athletes who have transitioned successful careers in athletics into successful careers in business. We get to hear firsthand about how the lessons learned in sports have transferred over into success in the world of business.
Our first guest is former NFL Defensive Back Ryan Mundy. Ryan started his collegiate career at the University of Michigan before transferring to West Virginia University. He finished his final year with 45 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 2 fumble recoveries. Ryan was then drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He won a Super Bowl with the Steelers in 2009 then spent a year with the New York Giants before coming to the Chicago Bears, where he finished his career. Today, Ryan is a successful businessman with a number of different successful business ventures including being co-founder of the reusable straw company SWZL.

For today’s episode we are joined by Maurice J. McDavid of DeKalb, IL. He is a community leader, serving in multiple capacities. He is in his 10th year of education and his first year as assistant principal at a bilingual elementary school. A former middle school social studies and Spanish teacher, he also served three years as dean of students at DeKalb High School. Apart from the work done there, he also serves as the assistant pastor and youth pastor at the United Pentecostal Church of DeKalb, the church in which he grew up. He is married to his high school sweetheart, who serves as the school board president of their school district and is blessed to have three wonderful elementary school-aged children. He is social justice and restorative justice trained and sees these as a major part of his work.

After college, Thomie played for the Hamburg Blue Devils of the German Football League where he won the 2003 German Bowl. After playing Following his time overseas Thomie played for both the Columbus Destroyers and the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. Thomie was inducted into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2014. He has his bachelors from Troy, a masters from Cornell University, and his MBA from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Phil leads the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Violence Prevention Initiatives where he is responsible for all aspects of safety, programs, and partnerships for 209 schools and 316 Parishes. He is also an Adjunct Instructor of Negotiation, Business Intelligence and Leadership at DePaul University Business School’s Department of Management & Entrepreneurship. He has served on the City of Chicago’s Office of Violence Prevention Advisory and the Governor of Illinois Public Safety Transition Committee. Prior to the FBI, Phil practiced law in Chicago and managed a violence prevention organization. He is a graduate of DePaul University College of Law and the University of Illinois, which he attended on an athletic scholarship and twice captained the Illini Swim Team. Phil is a recipient of a U.S. House of Representatives Award for Outstanding Courage and Heroism, an Illinois State Bar Association Service Award and is an inductee into Loyola Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame.

For today’s episode we are joined by Dr. Pat Ivey, Assistant VP/ Associate Athletics Director for Student Athlete Health and Performance at the University of Louisville. Prior to Dr. Ivey’s arrival to Louisville, he served as the Assistant Athletic Director of Athletic Performance at Arkansas State University. He oversaw the Athletic Performance Staff and was responsible to the training and development of all ASU’s sports teams. He also oversaw the Sports Nutrition department and was the primary deliverer of Mental Performance to the Football Team as well the Athletic Performance Staff. Pat Ivey lettered as a defensive end at Missouri from 1993-95. In 1995, he was honored as being the strongest athlete in the history of Missouri. In 1996, he was signed as a free agent by the San Diego Chargers. Beginning in 1998, Ivey worked as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, at the University of Missouri. He started his graduate assistantship after spending time with Denver Broncos and during his time with the Green Bay Packers in 1999.

For today’s episode we are joined by Head Coach of the Oklahoma City High Performance Rowing Center, Reilly Dampeer. Coach Dampeer has coached various national team athletes since 2010, at events including Senior, U23 and U19 World Championships, Pan American Games, and World Cups. Dampeer came to Oklahoma in 2016 from Washington, DC, where she was the coach of a high-performance club rowing program for eight years. She has also coached many athletes to the podium at National Championships, National Selection Regattas and other international events like Henley Royal Regatta and the Australian National Championships. Coach Dampeer is a participant in the U.S. Olympic Committee National Team Coach Leadership and Education Program. As an athlete, Dampeer rowed for Santa Clara University for four years, and after college trained at several clubs around the country. She won a National Championship title in the Single and represented the U.S. at the 2007 Pan American Games in the Single and Quadruple Sculls, taking silver in the Quad.

His administrative appointments include Director of the Center for Technology in Education at Cortland, Department Chair at East Carolina University and Middle Tennessee State University, and Dean of the College of Professional Studies at Missouri Western State University. He has also served twice as President of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education, Faculty Senate Chair at SUNY Cortland, and as the keynote speaker at academic and professional conferences in his specialty areas.

For today’s episode we sit down with Beth Hersman, Associate Professor in the Kinesiology and Health Department at Wright State University. In addition to serving as an associate professor she is also the Program Director for the Health and Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education programs. As an athlete, Beth played college soccer for three years at Indiana Wesleyan University, and two of the three years won National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) championships. She also competes at the national level in the Bikini division of National Physique Committee competitions. In her free time, she volunteers in local disability sport activities such as Special Olympics, Wheelchair Rugby, and running races with Team Heart and Sole.

For today’s episode we sit down with Peter Callahan. Peter is a Belgian-American middle-distance runner who competed for Belgium at the 2016 European Athletics Championships. He first attended and ran at Princeton University, where he graduated in 2013. While at Princeton, he was coached by Steve Dolan and set the school record in the indoor 1,000 meters. Callahan earned 7 Ivy League titles, 1 NCAA Division I Indoor Track title as a part of the Distance Medley team. He was granted a fifth year of NCAA eligibility and enrolled in a graduate program at University of New Mexico. While at University of New Mexico, Callahan placed fourth in the NCAA outdoor men's 1500 meters finals for two consecutive years, in 2014 and 2015. Callahan earned a Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track 1500 meter title.

Paul was first inspired when he heard a Harvard professor speak about the positive influence physical activity has on the brain. He teamed up with a few like-minded individuals and together they developed the Learning Readiness PE (LEPE) program to prove physical activity has a positive impact on brain function. The Program has received worldwide attention and Paul has traveled the country presenting his brain research findings, explaining the effects of fitness and exercise on academic performance.

For today’s episode we sit down with Charlie Tilson, outfielder for the Chicago White Sox. He was born and raised in Wilmette, IL and attended New Trier Township High School where he played baseball and football. He graduated in 2011 and was named the Gatorade Baseball Player of the year for the state of Illinois. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 79th overall pick of the 2011 MLB Draft. While in the Minor Leagues, Charlie was twice named to the Mid-Season All Star team in both 2014 and 2015. On July 31st, 2016 he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, the same team he grew up rooting for. On August 2nd, Charlie made his minor league debut against the Detroit Tigers.

For today’s episode we sit down with former Former NFL Running back and ESPN Football Analyst. At Idaho State, Merril was a four-year football starter who set 44 school and conference records and two NCAA football records, one for most receptions by a back in a season and the other for most receptions by a back for a career. In 1987, Merril was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played until 1993 and led the team in rushing and receiving in four of his first five years, setting a record in his third year for receptions by a running back. Merril joined ESPN in 1995 as a football analyst and sideline reporter, where he quickly distinguished himself through his in-depth knowledge of the game and his strong relationships with the coaches and players in the National Football League. He has since served as a host and analyst for a wide variety of ESPN programs on television, radio and the Internet, including ESPN’s SportsCenter and NFL Live; Friday Football and Fantasy Insider on ESPN News; The NFL on ESPN Radio; and alongside Ron Jaworski on the highly acclaimed State Farm NFL Matchup, which is the only show that uses coaches’ tape to provide an inside look at the game. Merril is also a regular contributor to ESPN.com and to ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Football and Super Bowl and NFL Draft coverage.

For today’s episode we sat down with 13-Year NFL Veteran Charles Tillman. He played college football at University of Louisiana at Lafayette before being selected by the Chicago Bears with the 35th pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. Tillman spent his first 12 years with the Bears, where he earned Pro Bowl honors in 2011 and 2012. Charles was also named the 2013 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year - an award which honors a player's volunteer and charity work, as well as his excellence on the field. He started his own foundation, the “Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation” in 2005. The mission of the Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation is to provide opportunities and resources to children and their families who are in need. For today’s episode we sat down with Mike Powell, Executive Director of Beat the Streets Chicago. Beat the Streets Chicago (BTS) is a non-profit organization that aims to develop the Urban wrestling community into a self-sustaining entity that is based on the core values of wrestling: hard work, dedication, discipline and determination. Prior to his work at BTS Chicago, Mike was a coach for the Oak Park River Forest High School wrestling program. In a decade of coaching, he led the OPRF Huskies to two dual team state championships, a dual team runner-up finish, a total of six appearances in the dual team state finals tournament, and top team scores at the individual state wrestling tournament four times. Powell coached 10 individual state champions and 31 all-state wrestlers. His overall dual meet record was 213-44. As an athlete, he was a 1994 state champion for OPRF High School in Illinois. He continued his competitive career at Indiana University, earning All-America honors in 1996, before completing his collegiate career three years later with an overall record of 68-21.

During his time at Virginia Tech, Coach Beamer racked up 238 total wins, making him the winningest active head coach at the time of his retirement as well as the 9th winningest head coach in College Football history.
