As the holiest of High Holy Days approaches, we take a moment to share a bit of musical levity....
Atone Again (Naturally)
Performed by Marc Hoffman and the Bungaloafers
Lyrics © 2016 by Mike Pollock
Music by Gilbert O’Sullivan
(intro)
Oh We had Rosh Hashanah last week
And so now it's forgiveness I seek
It’s time for HaShem to once again
Reopen that book He keeps
I hope that he’ll inscribe
My name there in-side
So like ev'ry Jew
On Yom Kippur who
Says for what I’ve done wrong I’m sorry
I’m standing in the shul, which is full of people praying
It might seem tough, but sure enough
It’s where I’ll be ohmeining
The shofar will be blown
I know I’m not alone
Atone Again, Naturally.
The Hazzan is the first to pray
With a mournful Kol Nidre
I skip drink and food, shlug kapores, too
Wear sneakers and don’t wash my face
And before the sun goes down
Five times I’ll be shteeble-bound
I’ll be davening till the evening
Though my soul is torn to pieces
All the day is spent
In repentance and confession
Tzedakah goes to those in need
Out of my possession
You know where I’ll be
This yontif join with me
Atone Again, Naturally
I start to realize
There’s a lot of awful things I’ve done
Folks I’ve offended
Though unintended
What did I do?
What did I do?
(Break)
Atone Again, Naturally
And so at this time ev’ry year
While it may bring a lot of tears
It keeps me and my wife in the Book of Life
With the kinderlach I hold dear
But it’s all about the soul
The spirit that keeps us whole
For we understand what Hashem commands
And He never can be forsaken
Though our year may start
With our hearts so badly broken
You’ll never hear complaints from me
When sacred prayers are spoken
For one entire day
Repent, confess and pray
Atone Again, Naturally
Atone Again, Naturally
It's that time of the week when you regret not having fixed the off button on the radio, but the silver lining to that dark cloud is that it's the last Country in the Country show of the summer! We began with that old chestnut "Big Bad Moish," from that even older chestnut, Country Yossi:And one of Country Yossi's Classic Calls, "Genenbdle 5 Boros":And a couple of tracks from NCSY's The Jewish Version, for which Yossi wrote the lyrics, "Bezras Hashem" and "HeyThere Gedalya":After a call, some more Country Yossi music, "Peel One More Potato (For The Kugel)"Then the latest news from Israel with Dov Shurin, who again mentioned his new favorite book:Another Classic Call? Sure! How about "Yentl Feet In Yard":And then some more CY Music: "Kurrybone":Which brought us to another call, a little break, and "When Moshiach Comes":Again with the calls? And again with the music? This time it's "Bubba Basra":And the callers wouldn't stop! Neither would the music. "Hello Mameh":And there's still room for more music? "Seven Little Kids":And we switched gears for the arrival of Rabbi Moshe Meir Wiess and his gevaldigeh Divrei Torah. As the minutes ticked by until the end of the show, we heard "Tick Tock":A final call and the 2015 summer season was in the history books, and right here in the online archive. See you somewhere soon!
Another lovely summer evening tarnished by arrival of Country Yossi and Country in the Country. But don't let that stop you from listening. You'll have almost two hours to find a better reason. We had a caller right of the gate, followed by a little Country Yossi music, "Oh, Yankel" and "Bashert":Then back to the phones and Dov Shurin with the latest news from Israel. Here's the must-have book Dov discussed: And then, by special request from your humble podcaster, "Is This the Way to Monticello" by Marc Hoffman and the Bungalowfers. Then back to the phones we went! And then more Country Yossi music, "Boro Park" and "I'm Proud to Be a Part of Am Yisroel":Did someone order a visit from Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss? I thought so! Here he is now.And a little more CY music: "Elan Elan" and "Somewhere Moshiach":And as Country Yossi's career sinks slowly in the west, that was the end of the show. See you next week!
The Three Weeks are over, so let the music begin again! Unfortunately, the closest thing we have to music is from Country Yossi and the Shteeble-Hoppers, with favorites like "Seven Little Kids"The Big K'nocker""Cholent"
And just to be sure Country Yossi didn't have a monopoly on the post-Three-Weeks return to music, we were thrilled to share: From Murray Goldwag's new album Murray the Sock Man Sings Yiddish Melodies As the show progressed, we heard Dov Shurin's latest news from IsraelThen more CY&TS-H music, "Bubba Basra" and "When Moshiach Comes":
It's a summer heatwave, and along with the oppressive heat, we have an equally oppressive visit from Country in the Country! As we're in The Nine Days, we shared two pieces of a capella music from Ari Goldwag:
Then came the shailes from Country Yossi, and the answers to the latest news from Israel with Dov Shurin. Then more shailes and more a capella music from Ari Goldwag: And two from Eli Gerstner & The Chevra: Then came some gevaldigeh Divrei Torah from Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss.A last minute Grand Prize attempt, and then we were off for Tisha B'Av! Have an easy fast, and we'll see you in two weeks!
Aaaaaand we're back. Country Yossi has finally returned to The Country. Just like the swallows returning to Capistrano. Or the return of your annual summer heat rash. Since it's the Three Weeks, real music can't return until after Tisha B'Av, so we kicked things off with a little a capella action from Lev Tahor and a Country Yossi classic:
Then came the straining stirs stirring strains of County Yossi himself and "These I Remember..." Up next , Country dusted off the shailes, so please excuse a little hustn. Then a little more a capella music from Lev Tahor:
Celebrating an iconic literary milestone, an historic new woodshed in publishing and unfortunately for an unsuspecting public, the 27th anniversary issue of our estimated publication we are porous to present this pre-Pesach pouperrie of poultry pauperism! (Please forgive our auto-correct errors-it seems a piece of whole wheat bourekas fell into my i-pad!)To celebrate, we decorate two staples with paper and print worthy of a prince! This landmark issue is guaranteed chometz-free, non-gebruks and actually printed in under 18 minutes!Due to a paucity of editorial content it can also unfortunately be read in less than 18 minutes!Be that as it may, we heretofore and forthwith probably president our 197th conservative issue of Countries Yossi familiar magazine in the belly that all men are created equal (except that some are more equal than others!)Hope you enjoin!
WARNING:Our heavily intellectualized, slightly homogenized, completely disorganized Purim concoction has once again escaped! It is armed, legged and dangerous! After that bit of excitement, we heard some Three-Weeks appropriate Country Yossi music: "These I Remember."Then some calls and the latest news from Israel with Dov Shurin. Then some more calls to take us to the top of the hour. We kicked off Round Two with some more a cappella music: Country Yossi's own "Deaf Man In The Shteeble" by Lev Tahor
A call or two, and then even more a cappella music! "Shalom Aleichem / Yesh Tikvah (Medley)" by Ari Goldwag [feat. Moshe Dov Goldwag] From the Album A Cappella Soul 2 And keeping things all in the family, we had a well-dressed phone visit with the inimitable Murray Goldwag! Who? You may know him better as Murray the Sockman or the owner of Murray's Kosher Sox in South Fallsburg. And if you don't, you should! We also had summer Sunday visit from Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss and his gevaldigeh divrei Torah.
And that was that. Have an easy fast, and we'll see you next week!
After a brief table of contents, we kicked things off with some Three-Weeks-friendly music: "Mimkomcha" from the album Eli Gerstner & the Chevra: Sing Acappella Then a little more a capella music while Country got the bugs out of the phone lines. (Is there a mashgiach in the house?) Another one from The Chevra: "V'hayu Limsheesa" Next we heard from Dov Shurin with the latest news out of Israel. You can find his latest writings in The Jewish Press. Then in our second hour, a return visit from R' Yoel Brill, and Ronny Biderman from A Hope to Heal.If you forgot what you learned last week, here's a reminder about what they do from their website:Our primary mission is to alleviate the short-term financial burden for adults and children stricken with acute serious illness by subsidizing their health insurance premiums. Other services include Health Care Advocacy, Medical Advocate Services, Support Programs, Health Awareness and Education.Once again, please visit http://www.ahopetoheal.org/ to learn more and find out how you can help. We were also joined by Rabbi Shais Taub, the keynote speaker at AHTH's inaugural ladies luncheonA few calls (including a long distance one!) before a little more a capella music: "Am Echad" by Ari Goldwag from the Album A Cappella Soul 2: And still more a capella from who else but AKA Pella and "Etz Chaim" And that slammed the lid on things for today! What will happen on next week's show? You'll have to tune in and find out!
Tonight was a very special Country in the Country show. But more about that momentarily. As we're in the Three Weeks, we featured a cappella music. Tonight we heard: Country Yossi's very own "Deaf Man in the Shteeble," as covered by Lev Tahor:"Borchu" by Ari Goldwag: And "Gam Ki Elech" from The Chevra Then in our second hour, a heartwarming visit from R' Yoel Brill, Jeff Patow and Ronny Biderman from A Hope to Heal.As their website says,Our primary mission is to alleviate the short-term financial burden for adults and children stricken with acute serious illness by subsidizing their health insurance premiums. Other services include Health Care Advocacy, Medical Advocate Services, Support Programs, Health Awareness and Education. But let those fine gentlemen explain it in their own words. And please visit http://www.ahopetoheal.org/ to learn more and find out how you can help. And tell the women in your life about their upcoming inaugural ladies luncheon! Then a delightful in-studio visit from Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss and his gevaldigeh divrei Torah, all about The Three Weeks.Immediately followed by Dov Shurin with latest news out of Israel. You can find his latest writings in The Jewish Press. And with that, the show disappeared just as quickly as it begain. Join us next week, won't you?
The Summer Fun continues, except for the two hours or so of Country in the Country! But let's overlook that little detail as we kicked things off tonight with some Kivi & Tuki music: "There is a Bracha." And then came the phone calls, and some Country Yossi music: "Oh Yankel." And then Dov Shurin checked in with the latest news out of Israel.
More calls, more music... "Shteeble People." Who wants some more Kivi & Tuki music? How about "Who Knows One?"
Then Yossi loosened his collar and took some more callers. Then another summer Sunday tradition: Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss and his gevaldigeh divrei Torah.
And then some more Country Yossi music: "Little Kinderlach." And that was almost it. But before we go, be sure to check out the latest weather forecasts from the National Weather Service as storms are a' brewin', and don't forget that Country Yossi will be among the judges as ten seasonal bungalow colonies and summer camps take part in a six-week long Community Mitzvah Award contest this summer, sponsored by Sullivan Renaissance. Three top prizes worth $10,000, $5000 and $3000 will be awarded to the participants that best clean-up and maintain their grounds and improve the look of their facilities.
Participants include:
The contest began last month with participants making improvements to their grounds. Each camp is then observed on a weekly basis by data takers who record what can be seen from the road. The sites will be visited by a team of judges from outside Sullivan County in August and the winner announced at the Awards Ceremony on August 11.
All the participating camps and colonies will receive a $500 seed grant, and those that finish the contest will get a completion grant of $500. Each participant also receives two planting containers with flowers and instructions, which must be maintained throughout the contest.
Campers and/or staff are also required to participate in an educational presentation and orientation by Sullivan Renaissance staff. All the participants will then be treated to kosher ice cream provided by an approved vendor for all the children involved in helping to maintain the property’s cleanliness.
Last year saw five participants in the contest, which was won by Skolya Bungalows on Route 42 in South Fallsburg. The goal of Sullivan Renaissance is to help guide communities to improve their visual standards.

We dusted off the Country Yossi Podcast, and look what we found! Country Yossi with Country in the Country! For this first show of the summer, we began with a little Country Yossi music: the surprisingly topical "Cholent," and the evergreen favorite, "Big Bad Moish." A few phone calls, some words from our gevaldigeh sponsors, then more CY music: "Oh Yankel."
Then we enjoyed an entertaining and informative visit with producer extraordinaire Eli Gerstner.
We also heard "Adir," as well as the title cut (with lyrics by Country Yossi), from YBC 6 - "Modeh Ani" - "Thank You."
It wouldn't be summer without a visit from Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss and his gevaldigeh divrei Torah.
Followed closely by Dov Shurin with the latest news from Israel.
And that's that. Tune in again next week for more fun and surprises.
Country Yossi’s sizzlin’ summer issue virtually snaps, crackles and pops with informative, entertaining, controversial and oftimes hilarious content!...
Eli Gerstner's long awaited YBC6 explodes onto the Jewish Music scene with a front cover exclusive that takes you behind the scenes of this musical masterpiece!
Title cut "Modeh Ani/Thank You" is the first English song to headline a YBC album and when you hear it you'll understand why Eli changed his mind and broke precedent at the last minute! (I am proud and honored to have been asked to write the lyrics.) Kivi and Tuki vol 6 Count Your Blessings, an all new treasure for the little kinderlach, gets the royal treatment as well in this action packed issue!
Grab a copy Friday! The first 1,000 copies include a free piece of cheese-cake!
Why is this night different from all other nights? On this night, we flip the format and let you ask the shailes about all things Pesadik. Once again, Country Yossi and Heshy recline while they leave all the heavy lifting to Rabbi Dovid Heber, editor of the annual J Drugs to answer all of your Pesach shailes. So keep a pencil handy and start taking notes!
Ah zissen Pesach to you and yours! We're off the air for a couple of weeks, if not more, so stay tuned!
