One of the fastest growing cities in the US, Austin, Texas is home to over a million unique and brilliant people with fascinating stories to tell. With her friendly conversational style, host and Austinite Adrienne Huebner gives listeners a glimpse into the lives of the inspired minds that make Austin the special city it is. From entrepreneurs to activists, journalists to politicians, educators to artists, and everything in between…This is Austin.

Vanessa Rutkowski is a licensed acupuncturist and applied clinical nutritionist who has been practicing in Austin for about 18 years alongside her husband, Douglas Rutkowski. Together, they own Tigerlily Wellness and Acupuncture off S. Lamar.
We spent most of our time talking about various modalities of Chinese and alternative medicine including acupuncture, cupping, and muscle testing. Whether you’re an acupuncture devotee like myself or a total skeptic, I think you’ll find something interesting in this conversation.
Note that this episode was recorded in mid-February 2020, before Covid-19 became an immediate concern for most of us in the United States. We discuss general advice for wellness during cold and flu season, but this advice does not necessarily prevent or treat Covid-19. The content in this episode is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Julie Oliver is a Democrat Running for US House of Representatives in Texas District 25, which stretches all the way from Austin up to Burleson south of Fort Worth. It’s a heavily gerrymandered district that has not seen a Democrat in office since redistricting in 2012. Julie has a compelling personal story and professional background in healthcare finance, both of which inform her platform and her passions. I walked away from our conversation feeling inspired and optimistic and I hope you will too.

Guy Forsyth is a long time staple in the Austin music scene and a 9-time Austin Music Award winner. He is known for his blues and Americana musical storytelling and has opened and performed with such acts as Ray Charles, Robert Cray, Dr.John, B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan and Lucinda Williams. If you’ve seen Guy perform (quite possibly at The Saxon Pub or Antone’s), you know he is an incredibly talented musician and performer, but his music was elevated to a whole new level when he joined forces with his lovely wife, Jeska, in 2018. A singer since childhood, Jeska Bailey Forsyth owned a blues club in San Angelo, Texas, named Sealy Flatts where she met Guy for the first time. On today’s episode of This is Austin, I’m speaking with Gertie Wilson, founder of the Austin-based, non-toxic beauty and skincare line, Elevé Cosmetics. As a makeup artist, Gertie has transformed the faces of hundreds of people including actors, models, singers, the occasional reality TV star, and many an Austin bride. When she noticed a lack of quality makeup options that were free of harmful ingredients, Gertie set out to create her own line and Elevé Cosmetics was born.
Gertie and I discussed growing up in West Texas and the culture shock she experienced moving to Austin, her experience doing makeup for celebrities at SXSW, along with why it is important to switch to “green” beauty and skincare.

Brett Ketchum is a Houston native and Austin transplant who has served our community as a professional firefighter for over 12 years. On his days off from the fire station, Brett runs a small business called Fireman Dryerman, teaches CPR and first aid classes, and spends time around Austin with his wife and two sons.
Brett and I talked about what drove him to become a firefighter after graduating with a psychology degree from UT, the arduous application and training process all firefighters go through, and some lesser known tips for keeping your family safe from house fires. I definitely learned a few things and I’m sure you will too.
