Welcome! For Micronesians by Micronesians is a platform that is all things Micronesian! The podcast was created for the month of May to highlight 30 Micronesians in 30 days in order to honor Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Due to popular demand, the podcast is now a weekly podcast and will feature more Micronesian personalities and topics. Feel free to listen, subscribe, and share!

This season, the goal is to go back to personal interviews talking with Micronesian community members. Some of the most valuable feedback that the podcast has received is that many children of the diaspora, adoptees, adoptive parents, and allies have utilized the podcast to learn about and feel connected to Micronesian heritage. Most of that was done through simply asking community members about the culture and their relationship to it. The space will be honored again by going back to this format for the new season.

I wanted to put out an episode on anti-Micronesian hate. I say it in the pod and will again, I did NOT do the subject justice. I do not know that there is a right way to unload all that is hateful towards our people. Either way, I felt compelled to at least address it and start the discussion.

Jadieann McAvoy works with Marshallese birth mothers who are in need of interpreters and assists to walk women through the adoption process ethically. Martha Holland works remotely for the organization to provide services for expecting families. Martha, herself, is an adoptee. Noah is a diasporic African American and Cherokee man with intent to build more awareness and bring greater understanding towards being an ally .for the Micronesian community.

On today's episode, I talked with the phenomenal Sanne De Wilde. Sanne is a Micronesian ally and Belgian photographer. Sanne received attention after her work on the Island of Pingelap where she photographed the local people and tied it in with the island being unique that the people have the highest population per capita of individuals diagnosed with achromatopsia. Her work in Pingelap gained national attention and she was featured giving a TED Talk on her work. Listen in and hear her thoughts of working with our people!

On today's episode, I discuss the COVID-19 pandemic with Marshallese leader, Melisa Laelan. Over 60% of the fatalities from COVID-19 are represented by the Marshallese/Micronesian population in the town where Melisa serves. Melisa Laelan is a native Marshall Islander, born and raised in the Marshall Islands. At age 16, she graduated top of her high school in the islands. A year later she enlisted in the United States Armed Forces. While in the Army, she was offered the opportunity to serve as a logistic specialist within various units throughout the United States and abroad including Asia and Europe. It was then that she acquainted with people from different cultures and became more appreciative of the diversity she experience. After ten years in the service, she moved to Arkansas to attend University of Arkansas in 2004 where she is now a senior, part-time status, studying International relations. Because of her prior service with the Armed Forces, she was able to attain her citizenship and in 2011, she became a U.S. citizen. She now holds a dual citizenship. In 2011, along with other Marshallese leaders, Laelan founded Arkansas Coalition of Marshallese (ACOM) and in the year 2015, ACOM received its non-profit status, making it the first organization founded and directed by native Marshall Islanders. As the executive director of ACOM, she has become a resource contact in both Marshallese and non-Marshallese communities. As the Marshallese community continues to grow in Arkansas, she is frequently visited by many.
