The divided kingdom is such an important part of Israel’s history that affects more of the biblical narrative than most people realize. In fact, 20 of 39 OT books find their genesis in this story. A kingdom divided will speak volumes to a present-day believer. Studying the story will not only speak to our hearts but challenge our lives. Our summer series will dive into Israel’s rich history and a series recall, “The Divided Kingdom.”

Have you “tied the knot”? The meaning of the phrase is to get married to someone or the performance of a marriage ceremony. In the folklore of many cultures around the world, knots make an appearance as a symbol of unity. And while this phrase could stem from a symbolic knot, physical knots have actually been used in marriage ceremonies. The wedding tradition is called handfasting. It is an ancient Celtic practice that bands couples together with a piece of cloth tied around their hands. So if you are getting married, it would be said you are “tying the knot.” But if you are already married, our challenge to you is to fortify your marriage by “tightening the knot.” June is the time of our annual marriage series, and our focus is not only to embrace the sacred vows we made on our wedding day, but to determine to accept them as a continual challenge to grow and strengthen our marriages. Invite family. Invite friends. Together, we’ll move toward more marital health, as we “Tighten the Knot.”

Do you remember when you first started reading “chapter books”? It was that transition in growth when you moved from picture books to a simple story line to a narrative that was a bit more complex that it needed chapters to separate the tale into incremental bits so that the reader can take in all that the story provided. Chapters helped us the reader step into the journey the author intended to lead us into. This is how we view the life that Christ has called us into. So if salvation is “chapter 1” of our new journey in Christ, then “chapter 2” is our next step in spiritual formation. In our next series, we are wanting to help encourage Kfirst to look to step forward into a new chapter of their own growth (discipleship) in Jesus. If we want to be a people to want to “be with Jesus so that we can become like Jesus,” then we need to look for a next step (or chapter) to begin. Join us as we discover what your “chapter 2” needs to be in your spiritual walk.

Our culture is big on belief. You could even say there is a belief in belief. Yet moments happen that can shake the foundations of what we believe and calls everything we held onto into question. When that happens, we really have to get to the bedrock of who we are and ask, “What do I really believe in?” The word “believe” is closely associated with the word “faith.” So when Jesus says, “Believe in me,” what He is really saying is, “Have faith in me.” This Easter, join us as we look to the cross and resurrection. Come out as we look to Jesus and choose to “Believe Again.”

There are three main "offices" spoken of in the Old Testament-prophet, priest, and king. Jesus fulfills all three of these roles. Normally, the three offices of prophet, priest, and king were distinct from each other, with no overlap. That is, a king was not a priest or a prophet. A priest did not function as a prophet or a king. And a prophet simply did a prophet's job without trying to be a either king or a priest. But Jesus Christ perfectly fills all three roles simultaneously: He is the Prophet, Priest, and King, to the great blessing of the world. This series looks at these roles that Jesus has fulfilled and still fulfills - He is our Prophet to give us direction, He is our High Priest to free us from shame, and He is our King to give us unity and strength.

We serve a God who is on mission. Since creation, God has been in the mode of redemption and restoration. This is His plan; this is His heart. It’s what we call the Missio Dei (Latin for “mission of God”). This mission is not just what He is up to but what God invites us to be a part of. In fact, Jesus spoke of this in what we call the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). Jesus calls us by beginning with the word “o.” Yet, it doesn’t mean quite what we think it means. Rather than being an in-your-face command, it is much more invitational in nature. It has more of an “As you go” sort of feel. In other words, wherever we are, we’re in just the right place to live out the Missio Dei and share the love of Jesus with whoever we meet. By recognizing the “As you go” nature of the commission, what we discover is that mission is not just a trip we take to a foreign country or land but it is the everyday posture of God’s people to everyone, everywhere, always. Join us in February as we look at our lives and embrace God’s Missio Dei and live lives that “go.”

I love our church. In fact, I think that you love our church too – otherwise, you wouldn’t be here.Yet, there is a problem that arises when we relegate “church” to the hour we give him in 52 Sundays a year. I, personally, believe we need to allow the life of Christ to move in our lives beyond 52 Sundays to see God work in every facet and in every day of our lives. I believe when the Church is working right and lives beyond the 52 Sundays, there is nothing like it. The Church is not an organization. It’s an organism designed to live, move, and have being. This month, we celebrate everything that God has done on Sundays but we look forward to how He desires to move in our lives 24/7. Join us in our new series “Beyond 52” as we cast our vision for the year. Why? Here at Kfirst truly believe that the best is yet to come!

James is a fascinating book of the Bible written by a fascinating individual. Not to be mistaken with the two James who were of the "Twelve". This James was the half-brother of Jesus and also the leader of the mother church in Jerusalem. Because of famine, poverty, and persecution, the people of the Jerusalem church began to scatter around the known world. So James begins to pen out some wisdom into this beautiful, short, and very powerful book. What is perhaps the most practical book of the Bible, it's also one of the most impactful. Join us on Sundays as we dive into the amazing book of James.

Darkness does not discriminate, but neither does the light. So, like a lantern chasing away a shadow, my heart would be that this series would penetrate the darkness of what depression has been doing and bring hope to lives, marriages, and families. It’s time to bring light to a darkness that affects over 18 million adults every year. It’s time to bring hope to a largely ignored topic that claims more lives than homicide. It’s time to normalize vulnerability. It’s time to normalize getting the professional help we need. It’s time to recognize the healing virtue that Christ brings.

“XC” is the roman numeral for “90” and September 2023 marks 90 years since the start of a dream that was first realized in the hearts of 6 people. In 1931, that group had a vision for a work to begin in Kalamazoo. They called the Assemblies of God to see if they would send someone to come and start a church to reach this city. Asa Miller answered that call and came here to begin what would ultimately be known at Kalamazoo First Assembly of God. What God began in the basement of a home, He has continued 90 years later to pour out His presence and impact people’s lives. Today, we can look back and see not only God’s faithfulness to our church but we can see with anticipation that the best has yet to com.

Today, we can look back and see not only God’s faithfulness to our church but we can see with anticipation that the best has yet to come.

Life is better in community. This is how God designed us. And this is how we should be operating life in. Dealing with relationships can be one of life’s greatest gifts and one of life’s greatest challenges. From marriage to friendships, it takes work, and like any other worthwhile challenge, it’s better with help. And that's our heart for "Me, We, Us." We want to bring a series that gives practical and spiritual applications for married couples as well as for those other relational connections we have in life.

It’s normally used to assert that important matters should be dealt with before other things. It is a step back to make sure that the top priority stays the top priority. One of the areas that can easily fall prey to operating without the top priority in mind is our finances. This series is our opportunity to look at God’s generous heart and how we can walk in that manner. Being generous is more than just giving, it’s a mindset that truly comes from the heart. In scripture we see God take little and make much of it. Jesus also said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Generosity is a blessing and is in the heart of God, and so it should also be in the hearts of His people. How has God been generous to you? What are some ways you can be more generous? This is the series where we’ll explore the heart God has for giving and how we play a part in the kingdom through it.

When bird symbolism is used in Christianity, the most popular one is that of a Dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. We hear words like “gentle” and “calm” in connection to doves and we think of the Spirit of God in that way. But many may not know that years ago, Celtic Christians had an intriguing name for the Holy Spirit that lent toward a different bird; perhaps an unexpected animal. They called the Holy Spirit An Geadh-Glas, or “the Wild Goose.” The name hints at the mysterious nature of the Holy Spirit. Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or tamed. With Him, there seems to be an air of unpredictability. At times, the Holy Spirit can be like a dove leading us to a place of stillness and peace. What I find often, He’s rambunctious as a goose — wresting us from our sedentary ways, disturbing the status quo, and injecting the fire of God’s love into our lives.

Repetition. When we want to memorize something, we’ll say it over and over. When we want to emphasize something, we’ll speak of it frequently. When we want someone to remember something, we will admonish them continuously. Repetition is not just a tactic we employ in our modern day but was a mechanism of Biblical writers to do exactly what we use repetition to do: make something important, impactful, and memorable. It was the Prophet Isaiah who would write the words in his description of what he saw the Seraphim speak about God. “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Notice the word used three times. It isn’t “love, love, love” or “good, good, good” but “holy, holy, holy.” To repeat these words is to say that God is most holy. Totally holy. Completely holy. Unwaveringly holy. Utterly holy. And what we are going to do over the course of this series is dive into God’s holiness and allow it to introduce change within us.

As a church, we should do things on purpose instead of doing things because “that’s what we’ve always done.” There should be a “why we do this” behind our “what we do.” January 2023 we are diving into what drives what happens on Sunday mornings and how that affects our lives for the rest of the week. Our Sundays are not meant to stay on Sundays. They are a launching point into our next step of following Jesus. They are a place to point our lives toward Christ and propel us into the world as light

What Is an RSVP? The term “RSVP” comes from the French expression répondez s’il vous plaît, meaning “please respond.” If RSVP is written on an invitation, it means the host has requested that the guest respond to say if they plan to attend the gathering. For the fourth year in a row, we look to a group of letters often referred to as the “Prison Epistles.” These letters were sent from Paul while he was in prison to a handful of churches. To the church in Colossae, he sent them a letter that was an RSVP. It was his invitation to “please respond” to the transformative work of Jesus. The same invite given to the Colossians is now given to us. It’s up to us to say “yes” and accept the offer of a life change in Christ

The most simple definition of a “plot twist” is an unexpected development. It’s a tactic used in literature and film to introduce a change in a storyline that is unexpected and unforeseen. This can also be a way to describe the life of a man we know as Samson. This man who’s birth was foretold by an angel had a life and a calling laid out for him to live. But because of his own desires and ego, what was to be a life of a Godly direction became of life full of “plot twists

What do you think of when you hear the word “reclaim”? To some, they think of “reclaimed” wood or timbers and decking rescued from old barns, factories, and warehouses. People will take what is reclaimed and use it for another purpose than the material was originally intended. But to others, “reclaiming” has another meaning. It’s all about retrieving something that was lost or taken. It’s recovering something for the purpose of returning it to its original purpose or intent. And that’s the story of a place called Eden. It is here that biblical narrative has its beginnings with God creating everything. Light. Land. Animals. Humans. It was flawless and the birthplace of marriage. But in Genesis 3, perfection is broken. Innocence was not misplaced, it was given away. And since, we’ve been trying to figure out marriage hoping we’ll discover the key to marital happiness. This June, we’re going back to Eden. We will go back to the design of what God brought together and learn from the One who designed it all. This June, we’re “Reclaiming Eden” and asking God to help us rediscover His design for marriage.

Reclaiming Eden|Pastor Dave|"Divinely Designed" What do you think of when you hear the word “reclaim”?

In the Great Commission, we were given direction from Jesus to go and make disciples. That means our heart is not just to help people to find Jesus but to help them follow him. In fact, those were the simple words Jesus utilized when he challenged people to change the direction of their lives toward him. He said the two words, “follow me.“ Join us for this brand new series as we put a focus on growing in Christ and becoming more like him.

Shared Tears Tears are often misunderstood. We can cry tears of joy as well as tears of sadness. Compassion can bring tears as well as immense frustration. As our body processes emotions, tears have been known to flow which is why they’ve been called the “body’s release valve.” The heart of this series is to show that tears are a gift from God. And it’s important that we understand this element of the human dimension. In fact, Scripture says in Psalm 56:8, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” When we cry, regardless of the circumstance, God notices every tear. When we are vulnerable, He answers with His presence.

The book of revelation is known for giving us a glimpse into the end-time events of our world but we often forget that it starts out with seven small letters. These letters are the words of Christ to seven key churches of the known world of that time. The words of Christ speak into the heart of where those churches are at that should challenge our hearts today. Join us for January February as we look into these letters and let our lives and our church get challenged.

For a third fall in a row, we are navigating through another of the Apostle Paul’s letters to the church. This year, we are studying Philippians. Paul, writing from a prison cell, knew all too well how things both externally and internally can erode and break apart our joy. It seems our culture both highlights and even celebrates turmoil to the point where it can feel impossible to find any semblance of joy. In this new sermon series, we dive into Philippians and allow its powerful and encouraging truths about living a joy-filled life in the midst of struggles. Join us as we read life-changing insight from the Apostle Paul and “reconstruct” the joy in our lives.

Parables are the chosen tactic of Jesus to convey the heart of the Kingdom of God. Christ used them to illustrate the love of God and to understand what He desires for us. And, perhaps there may not be a more famous parable than the parable of the Prodigal son. If the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this parable would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom. Through this story, we can grasp the depths of God’s heart for humanity while bringing our hearts into check. This prodigal story will lead us back to Jesus while propelling us forward to living like Him.

Have you ever seen a “safety scoreboard”? Safety Scoreboards are a way to track a company's days without an incident or accident and encourages the employees to beat their best previous record. It’s believed that visually communicating a company's incident-free workdays cultivates safety in the workplace.

But it only takes one moment to reset that clock. Just a single act that can take all of the “progress” made and turn the clock back to “0 Days.”

If there were a “safety scoreboard” internally that tracked the number of days that your emotions didn’t cause an “incident,” what number would that be? Would it be a large number? Or maybe, would it be set at 0 because it seems that, daily, our emotions can get the best of us.

People struggle with the chaos that happens around them in their everyday lives. From dealing with co-workers to everyday traffic to the circumstances that wait at home, we are surrounded with challenges. But most of the time, it really isn’t the things on the outside that get “out of hand”; it’s what’s happening internally that gets the best of us.

God’s design and desire for us are that we would steward our emotions; to be emotionally connected and emotionally healthy people. That we would feel free to feel our God-given emotions and to allow them to help us connect our souls to the One who created us.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard that before after you’ve knocked on someone’s door or rang their doorbell. There’s something a bit awkward about accessing someone else’s home without them personally coming and opening up the door for you. Often, I’ll wait until someone appears to confirm that I have their permission to come inside.

I think we can treat the subject of the Holy Spirit in the same way. He (not “it) is available to you and me at any moment of any day. His presence is already with us and He desires to work in and through our lives daily. But for some reason, we think the Holy Spirit is reserved for a few. That only a handful of people get access to the room where He’s moving and working and the rest of us get to hear about it afterward.

The good news is this: because of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is available to ALL. You and I don’t have to wait to hear from someone else about what the Holy Spirit is up to. You and I can be in “the room where it happens.” This series is all about having an awareness of and having access to the Spirit of God. We desire to be a faith community that lives in, walks in, and operates in the move of God’s Holy Spirit. Join us in our new series, “The Room Where it Happens.”

The gospels are a place where we can find wonderful moments and astounding miracles. I see Jesus interacting with people from different cultures and walks of life. But only once, just once, does Jesus describe a moment as “beautiful.” And that moment is when a woman with a bottle of perfume blesses him out of the abundance of her blessed heart. This month, we are going to be drawing out of this beautiful story shared in all four Gospels. This story will inspire us not just appreciate what we have been blessed with but to challenge us to establish a culture of blessing.

I’m a huge fan of this season, the traditions, and the spirit behind the season. But this time can feel like a storm of activity. Throughout the bible, “storms” are mentioned as moments that happen that we can’t help, but something we all must go through. Here in Michigan, (especially this time of year) our storms are called BLIZZARDS. And often, that’s what the hurry of activity can feel like this time of year: a blizzard. This 3-week series is our opportunity to step into the narrative of the Christmas story and not get lost in the storm. We can’t avoid a storm, but we do have the promise of Immanuel. He is “God with us.”

A Masterclass is simple: it’s a class given to students of a particular discipline by an expert of that discipline— usually music, painting, drama, or any of the arts. Or on any other occasion where skills are being developed. And for the early church, Paul the apostle was the “expert” speaking into local churches the skills needed to follow Jesus Christ.

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is a “masterclass.” Used by early Christians, this letter was taken to all of the churches to help them live a truly blessed life. Here we discover that we are adopted and chosen by God, while being united with other followers of Jesus. We are saved by grace, free of the penalty stacked up against us by our sin. No longer are we strangers - we’re insiders, gifted by God, and servant partners with Jesus and his work. We are fully alive and him, heirs of the vast fortune that has given us new life.

Join us this series as we all learn from the “Masterclass” of Ephesians.

How can we be faithful to our God in a world that increasingly rejects him? How should God’s people engage the world? Is living by faith even worth the cost? What is the source of our courage in the face of increasing conflict? These are the ever-growing questions of our present day as followers of Jesus Christ. But these were also the questions of God’s people in the book of Daniel. The message of the life of Daniel is that our sovereign God overrules evil and strengthens his people to overcome faithfully. Our study of the life of Daniel will deliver confidence and strength to each of us as we seek to bring God’s grace and peace to the community around us.

To “spin” something is more than “to turn or whirl around an object quickly” (Websters). It’s a strategy for changing information. For example, a “spin room” is an area where political information is directed towards a desired outcome. The “spin room” is where journalists can speak with politicians and/or their representatives after a debate. The name refers to the fact that the participants will attempt to "spin" or influence the information from the debate to benefit their own cause.Though this is a political tactic, it’s actually something people have done to the Scriptures for hundreds of years. A solitary or well-known Bible verse is read and “spun” in a direction to fit what the reader would like it to say or mean. Instead of seeing it in light of why it’s said in scripture, we “spin” it towards a direction that fits us best.In this series, our heart is not only to examine some of those familiar passages but also to equip ourselves to understand the Scriptures when we read them. The goal isn’t to “spin” the Scripture towards our heart but to “spin” our hearts towards Scripture.
