Sermon Text: Neh. 8:1-18

I. God’s people cannot truly live without the reading of the Law (i.e., the Word of God). (Neh. 8:1-6)

A. We should require the teaching of the Word.

B. We should require that the Word be obeyed.

Because we forget.

Second, because younger people who may not have heard from quality

teachers of the Law, needed to hear.

Third, the Word of God is used by God to bring fear of Him into the hearts of

men.

Fourth, sinful men and women do not want to have their sins pointed out to

them, yet they desperately need to be convinced of their sinfulness.

C. We, as God’s people, should remain unified.

II. God’s people cannot truly live without repentance. (Neh. 8:9)

III. God’s people require constant revival if they are to truly live. (Neh. 8:10-18; 9:1-10:39)

IV. God’s people require restoration when they have fallen away from following Him. (Neh. 8:17)

V. God’s people rejoice in the Word and work of God when they repent. (Neh. 8:10-10:39)

Introduction: The Christian life is a race, a run, a pursuit.

Paul’s Pursuit can be characterized as a…

  1. Purifying Pursuit (12a) “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected”
  2. Pressing Pursuit (12b) “but I press on”
  3. Proper Pursuit (12c) “that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me”
  4. Precise Pursuit (13) “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
  5. Prized Pursuit (14) I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus
  6. Perfect Pursuit (15-16) Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything that you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.

Sermon Text: Phil. 3:4-9a

  • Paul explains in this text “what” it means to have no confidence in the flesh as well as “why” we should have no confidence in the flesh. There is much lose by having confidence in the flesh and much to gain by counting it all loss.

Introduction

  1. Paul’s argument (4-7): Have no confidence in the flesh because God’s standard is impossible to keep.
  2. Evidence of this reality is clear from Paul’s own testimony
  3. Paul’s conclusion (7-9): if my inherited and earned advantages cannot save me, they are worthless and I count them all as loss.
  4. Why should I count them all as loss? - That I may gain Christ and be found in Him

Men's Bible Study

Damon Joseph discusses the Covenant of Works. The Covenant of Works is the covenant God made with Adam in the beginning requiring total obedience. Upon persevering  obedience Adam would have been rewarded with life in a secure sinless state. This would have been granted not only to him, but to all of his posterity. Although, upon Adams disobedience, he instead inherited a curse not only for himself, but all of those in him.
