Deconstructing Social Narratives About Racism in Rio de Janeiro—A debate about racism from the inside out, with a focus on favela voices, and with community journalism as the means to provoke the urgent dialogue we need.

Racism naturalizes oppression against black people in all areas of their lives, including their spirituality and faith. Since colonial times, systematic violence has taken place against people of Afro-Brazilian religions, such as Umbanda and Candomblé. In Brazil, sacred entities of Afro-Brazilian religions are primary victims of racist religious intolerance. Have you ever wondered why it's always the same black spirit entities that are manifesting and being cast out in services in the name of Jesus—a white Jesus with blue eyes?

The Black Coalition for Rights, a political network with advocacy reaching Brazil’s National Congress and international forums, brings together over 150 collectives, institutions, and entities of the Brazilian black movement today. In this episode, we present a small cartography of some of the voices who participate in the Coalition. To all of them, we asked, “What is your voice and the place of your voice within the Black Coalition for Rights?”
