Based in 1996 two fictional want-to-be pastors, Alex and Jason recount the brutal butcherings of the Bible they were exposed to in the evangelical church. Then, as any low-budget 90s VHS christian special would, they travel to the future (present day) to see the impacts and repercussions of those teachings. Don't be left behind, listen today! www.notyourpastors.com
Jake has received static filled calls from his old house, Wayne has been visited by a little girl, and Tony gives an update on the woman living at his mom's house. All of these stories and more in our Podcast of Horror 4. Meanwhile back in 1996 Alex and Jason can't believe the youth group has opted out of Jason's Harvest Party to go to a haunted house. What is this world coming too?

When someone dies by suicide, do they go to hell? In this episode we explore that question through the stories of Andrew Stoecklein, Amy Bleuel, and Matthew Warren, three notable christians who’ve recently died by suicide.
We also talk to Steve Austin, author of “Catching Your Breath” and “From a Pastor to a Psych Ward,” about his near death by suicide, as well as therapist and co-host of the CXMH podcast, Robert Vore, on how the church can help.

Jason reveals to Alex that he set up a “left behind” scenario for the youth group which resulted in many tearful conversions to Christ. Alex berates the practice saying that the scare tactic isn’t the best way to lead people to the Lord. Jason disagrees and thus they consult their time machine to peer into the future church to settle the argument. Kerri is the daughter of the BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) serial killer, Dennis Rader. From 1974 to 1991 BTK claimed 10 victims. Not only that, he taunted the police and terrorized the citizens of Wichita Kansas through the media releasing photos and evidence of his victims looking for fame and notoriety. But that's not the only way Kerri is choosing to remember him. Her dad lived a double life, and now Kerri lives with PTSD, depression, and anxiety wrestling the good memories of her father and the secret villain that he was. Through the work of God in her life, Kerri has become an advocate for victims of abuse, crime, and trauma, sharing her journey of hope, healing, faith, and forgiveness and we're excited to share it with you! After growing up religious and then leaving his faith behind, Pastor Brandon Carleton started to feel like he was throwing the baby out with the bathwater. After years of deconstructing, then reconstructing his beliefs, he began to ask questions like: Is there a way to cut through religious dogma and create authentic community? What would it look like to lead from a position of not having all the answers? What if much of what we are so often taught about the Bible is only one of many ways to interpret the text? This vulnerable and contemplative book offers hope to anyone who has felt excommunicated from a traditional faith system. Through stories of trial and error, Brandon Carleton presents a different approach to faith, pastoring, and ultimately, how to find religion meaningful again.

Have you ever felt called to ministry? Yeah, you probably weren’t. Jamie was a missionary in Costa Rica and she was terrible at it… so was everyone else, but that wasn’t the story churches were getting back home in their monthly newsletters! Jamie has since gone on to be a voice in the wilderness boldly asking people to think critically before supporting that vacationing missionary with no qualifications to be in ministry. In this episode Jess (Jason’s wife) fills in for Alex as he and his wife welcome a foster child into their care. In his absence, we talk about missions, calls to ministry, puberty and... periods. It gets real.

With Netflix releasing the documentary Flint Town, we thought it would the perfect time to re-release our interview with Ernesto and Tony who grew up in Flint, left Flint, and have since returned to Flint. This interview was recorded last year, on the same day Trump gave his inauguration speech. Flint is our podcasting home. It’s where Alex lives, it's where we record, it’s where Jason grew up on the weekends with his Dad. This city is special to us. Over the next several months we’ll periodically throw out our opinion on the Flint Town documentary and its impact on the city. We hope you enjoy this re-release, and we hope Ernesto and Tony’s story telling make you laugh as much as it did us!

THE END IS NEAR! At least here is what happens when you mix modern day conspiracies with the biblical evangelical eschatology… Once Johnny B Good-christian reaches that last remote people group with the gospel, the Christian population is going to slip into an alternate dimension with Jesus. Meanwhile, chaos will erupt on earth, earthquakes are going to shake apart the neglected and tortured floating ball. As people are trying to cope with the dramatic climate change, a secret post-Nazi government with a human/robot hybrid army will come on the clouds and cease the remaining population and take them by storm. The whole world will succumb to a single seemingly nice dude who provides goods and services for his followers so long as they identify with him by taking his number. As he’s sitting upon his giant commerce empire the inhabitants of earth will be forced into the labor of cleaning up the disaster of all that left behind laundry and rebuilding a mock temple so he can have one final throwdown with God. It will take 7 years, and then he’ll be destroyed by Jesus, and the earth and all who have ever lived, will live happily ever after.
We hope you enjoyed the show! Let us know about our favorite conspiracies, for super shady links to poor rabbit hole information, please visit our website.

What in the hell is going on with the Lord’s Supper? Is it called communion? Is it called the Divine Liturgy? The Eucharist? How often should we do it? Does it matter how we take it? All of that really depends on which church you go to, but which one is right? Kenneth Tanner, who is been in ministry at Holy Redeemer in Rochester Hills for 13 years, joins us to share some much needed insight into the mess the church has made of something so pure! He drops some bombs on fear-based-communion-exclusion as he shares with us what the meal is really all about. So come on, join us! Let’s break bread and remember Jesus!

Grow up in church? How many times have you been baptized? Sprinkled? Dunked? What’s baptism for? Is baptism essential for salvation? Why do some people choose never to get baptized? And why in the world was Jesus baptized? Was it for the remission or forgiveness of his sins? Jason has actually had the privilege to visit the baptism of site of Jesus... both of them! (follow us on Instagram to see pictures). It seems the deeper we submerge our heads under the topic of baptism the more crazy it gets! The guys try to clear up some confusion around the church practice as they also share their preaching and teaching fails on the subject.
What’s your baptism story? We’d love to hear it and read it on an upcoming show! Reach out to us on one of or social media outlets or shoot us an e-mail.

Joy Beth Smith is a managing editor with Christianity Today and releasing her new book “Party of One” this week! She comes on the show and enlightens us on the church’s failing when it comes to interacting with single people. She rightly points out how the church is steeped in the idolatry of marriage both in doctrine and in practice, and how the prosperity gospel is still alive and terrible in the single world. Joy Beth also has a bold and powerful call to the unmarried: Don’t wait until marriage! While Party of One may be written for single women in the church who are desiring marriage, it’s full of insight for the married and how we can minister to one another despite our marital status. This interview was a blast, we hope you enjoy! Grab a copy of “Party Of One” today! Available through Nelson publishing, Amazon (http://a.co/ffgx3Wt), or wherever fine books are sold!

Jaime and Bri from the podcast “That One Time I Was Abducted By Aliens” come on the show to talk about… well… that one time they were abducted by aliens. They also confirm something for Jason that he thought might be true, but wasn’t sure. We talk angels and demons and… well… aliens in this interview that didn’t last nearly long enough. Are aliens angels or demons? Or are they just aliens? What do they want with us? Why do they contact us? What is their message? Jaime and Bri have answers! Ever buy something and regret it? Ever walk aimlessly down the aisles of stores, picking up items, admiring them, and then placing them back on the self? Ever search online for a new church wondering if it will fulfill all your needs and wants? We have! In this episode we discuss consumerism from a Christian perspective and share our failures and… more failures. We fail a lot at this, but hopefully together we can find some comfort, and ultimately purchase less.

Death: it's the only guarantee in life, but it wasn't supposed to be that way. Mankind wasn't designed to die, mankind was designed to live forever. Death is such a part of life that it's hard to picture life without death. In fact, death has such a hold on us, that your view of it, determines how you live your life. Some work hard to leave something for their offspring. Some enjoy every last moment while they can. Some give up because they find no point to life.
Enter in Jesus, a man who died, and three days later rose from the grave. Showing mankind for all of history that there is victory over death. Death doesn't have the final say, their is something after it, life continues. His story is so profound that His legend has transcended generation after generation for over 2,000 years. Til this day, believers in the resurrection still gather on Sunday morning to cling together in remembrance and in hope of His story, and that in and of itself is miraculous.
Listen in as Alex and Jason discuss death and frankly make a lot of mistakes while speaking because they both stayed up too late watching Stranger Things 2 the night before.

We took a break and rumors about our where-abouts swirled. Swirled like the red and white blend of a peppermint sucking candy. Murmurs turned into Rumors turned into full out conspiracies, and that's what we talk about in this episode. The first episode of season three is here! Is Hitler still alive? Who really killed JFK? what's up with the Denver airport? What's going on with C.E.R.N.? Where is Jesus' body? We talk about all of that in more, in our season 3 debut! It's good to be back!

Dear Christian, are you sitting down? We hate to break it to you, but if your bible is written in english, its not perfect. It has errors. Dave Duncan (former pastor, and southern Baptist seminary student with a major in the canonization of scripture) joins Alex and Jason to show us that the message of the bible is God-breathed, but our translations, though worthy and useful, are not perfect. Dave presents some great questions. Is the word of God soley contained in the pages and between leather? Are you comfortable with translators deciding gray areas? We discuss all of this and more without error and in great clarity in this episode.

I am a mom of three children, one of which now resides in heaven. I've been diagnosed with mental illness, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and that sort of thing. But I've just now decided to own my story and faith, and to take down masks. I want people to see me, for me - and the hope I know - even if that means being vulnerable and transparent.

Fun fact, Alex and Jason don't always agree. Alex likes his guns while Jason has never shot one. Ever. Alex's plays metal and classic rock while Jason plays indie and folk. Alex leans relatively conservative while Jason is an apolitical progressive. How do they get along? Listen and find out! Also animal facts returns and Jason's wife accidentally stumbles into the sex talk with their 8-year old Oliver.

We didn’t wait to have sex until we were married, and shocker… We didn’t burn in hell immediately! So why wait until marriage to have sex then? Bryan Sands joins us to talk about his new book “Everyone Loves Sex: So Why Wait?” Gone are the days of passing the roses around and shaming the youngins into not having sex. Enter in a fresh redemptive, restoring, gospel centered perspective from Bryan. We discuss our failures, our poor theologies, and how God redeems us and sex! We also say farewell to the Joe Louis Arena, beloved home of our Detroit Red Wings, as well as introduce a new series in May celebrating women and learning about feminism!

The law was designed by God to crush us, and that is exactly what it does. It crushes to the point of crying out to God, "I can't do this on my own, please send help!" Enter Jesus into the picture. Jesus perfectly completed, accomplished, and nailed the law to the cross forever ending the burden for mankind to live by it. So why have our churches put in place rules and contingencies on God's free grace? Why, when we realize those rules are wrong, do we continue to try and live by them, or worse, hold others to them?
Those are the questions pose to author and speaker Brandon Andress! We hope this humble attempt to tackle a paramount topic in the church finds you well, opens your eyes, and helps encourage you to experience more of God's creation!

Alex sits down with long-time buddy Austin Germain a Director of Production at a church in MI. Is production necessary? Is it beneficial? Is it sending the wrong message? How does the American church compare to the global church? These are some of the questions we try to cover in this show as Jason battles mono. We also introduce our new segment #asknypp where we answer questions you probably should have asked your pastor, but asked us instead. If you would like us to answer a question on the show or share your band’s music use the tag #asknypp! Thanks for listening, and please review us on iTunes!

In this episode we sit down with Seth and Hannah Wiles who both went to Christian private schools. Seth went through a serious faith deconstruction post graduation, while Hannah didn’t. What led to it? Why did Seth deconstruct while Hannah didn’t? Do Christian private schools save kids? These are some of the questions we try to answer in part two of our Back to School series. Also Alex shares his Zao concert experience while Jason talks about his Snapchat fails.

Alex and Jason sit down with Superintendent Sean Costello. Sean has spent 20 years in the public and private school sector holding just about every job you can think of and is currently a superintendent overseeing 34 schools and 9100 kids! He also participates in four different homeschool associations and is a roller derby referee (what?). We half a light-hearted conversation about the serious topic of homeschooling and the responsibility of parents regardless which route they determine for their child’s education.
