Every week, Scott Curtis talks serious with comedians about their craft. Were they inspired by Dave Chappelle or George Carlin, Paula Poundstone or Iliza Shlesinger? How do they write their comedy sets? Which jokes work and which one's failed? How do you find your comedic voice? Which comedy clubs are the best? We hit these topics and more every week so that you and I can learn from the professional comedians who have blazed the trail for us.
Cody Webb is a Portland-based standup comedian and content creator with 178,000 followers and 8 million likes on his TikTok channel. In the conversation, Cody discussed how he started taking stand up more seriously after he graduated and then COVID hit, inspiring him to look for a way to entertain himself through content creation. He explained that there is a difference between his stand up comedy and his TikTok content, as stand up generally has more time to develop a joke, whereas with TikTok, you have to grab the attention of viewers immediately and keep that energy.
Cody is doing a great job in keeping creative and using his TikTok fame to build a stand-up comedy following. Our “Is This Anything” session was a great joke writing session. I think I liked Cody’s a little more than mine but we both decided our jokes were worth a try on stage.

Matt Ruby is a comedian, writer, and filmmaker from New York City. His comedy has been filmed by Comedy Central, MTV, NBC/Seeso, and FOX. He hosts the podcast Kind of a Lot with Matt Ruby.
In his latest special, Substance, he performs 4 sets on 4 nights, 1 high, 1 drunk, 1 sober, and 1 on shrooms. His previous special, Feels Like Matt Ruby (“funny" according to the NY Times) is also available on YouTube. His two albums, Feels Like Matt Ruby and Hot Flashes, are in regular rotation on Sirius and went top 10 on the iTunes Comedy charts. He's also been featured on CNN, The Huffington Post, New York magazine, Time Out, and many more.
Misguided Meditation is his one-man show about mindfulness, psychedelics, therapy, and death. He's a regular at the legendary Comedy Cellar and co-produces Hot Soup there (Tuesdays), one of NYC’s longest running independently produced comedy shows, and Good Eggs (Wednesdays) at NY Comedy Club.
He’s also a writer-for-hire, co-author of the NY Times bestseller REWORK, and former frontman of the indie rock band Plastics Hi-Fi.

Niko Lukoff recently appeared on tour with Bill Burr thanks to a Twitter conversation, a testament to his phrase it doesn't hurt to ask. Nico created the Facebook group Displaced Comedians during the pandemic when comedy clubs were shut down, and it quickly became a hub for over 10,000 comedians to get booked on online shows. Scott was an early adopter of the group, but he didn't interact much. Nico explains that the group not only provided a platform for comedians to connect, but it created connections and friendships that still stand today. Nico believes that taking time to relax and enjoy things like the Eventbrite show with Judah Friedlander is the perfect Sunday afternoon activity.
Niko had just started doing stand up comedy seven months before the pandemic hit, having done around 30 live open mics while traveling for their job in sales. He had never done comedy in his home comedy scene in Idaho, so the pandemic provided the perfect opportunity to pursue it. Niko noticed that one of the comedians they had met, Carol Freeman, was doing a Zoom open mic, so they decided to check it out. Niko was then introduced to Rachel Rothenberg, a great comic from Salt Lake City, who was doing a Zoom open mic with 25-30 comics.
Niko talked about how they first got into virtual comedy, which was by watching other people do sets in their living rooms and cars. After seeing Carol do her set, Niko decided to figure out how to do a set of their own, despite not having the proper equipment. They used their laptop's camera and picked an angle of their garage to show to the viewers. Niko then joined various Facebook groups for various comedy scenes and did sets in different cities such as Portland and Seattle. They figured out how to utilize virtual comedy while they were in the midst of the pandemic, which was an unknown at the time.
The conversation focuses on how Niko created an online platform to organize open mics during the pandemic. He noticed that many people were doing Zoom open mics, but there was no central hub for information about them. He created a Facebook group and a Google Sheets list to provide this information, including the time, location, hosts, and sign up process. He also wanted the group to be a community, so he invited anyone interested to join. This platform has been a valuable resource for comedians and fans of comedy alike in the absence of live shows.

William Conway won a comedy contest his first time on stage. He parlayed that win into some hosting gigs and was a favorite in the Iowa clubs. A lapse of judgement sent William to prison for nearly 10 years. While inside, he got a new outlook on life and continued to work on his stand-up after being released.

St. Louis-born and Huntsville, AL-raised, Matthew Tate is a veteran of the lauded HSV Comedy scene and a producer of the long-running Homegrown Comedy and TGIM Comedy showcases. A former improv and musician, Tate found his passion in standup comedy in 2012, and quickly began producing local shows as well as touring on the road. His debut standup comedy album, "I Drink, Therefore I Am", was released in 2016, with a follow-up, "Game Set Trashed", which debuted at #1 on Amazon's Top-Seller list. His EP-length single about dealing with isolation in a global pandemic, titled "The Happiness Illusion", was released later that year, followed by a fourth release, "It Only Hurts When I Exist", in June of 2022. Matthew has performed on the Wild West Comedy Festival, and has been featured in No'Ala Magazine, al.com, and The Montgomery Advertiser, as well as the series "Punching Below the Bible Belt"

A house-filling favorite in Las Vegas since she opened as one of the hottest tickets in town in June 2000, Rudner is known for her epigrammatic one-liners. Over the course of a multi-year run she sold almost two million tickets, grossed over a hundred million dollars and become the longest-running solo female comedy show in the history of Las Vegas. She was named Las Vegas’s Comedian of The Year nine years in a row and in 2006 received The Nevada Ballet’s Woman Of The Year Award. In October 2017 she was given the Casino Entertainment Legend Award.
Rita’s first solo HBO special, Rita Rudner’s One Night Stand, was nominated for several awards, as was her eponymous English BBC television show that later appeared in the USA on A&E. Rudner’s two one-hour specials for HBO, Born to Be Mild and Married Without Children, were ratings standouts and she performed all over the country, filling Carnegie Hall in New York three times. In 2008 Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas was PBS’s first ever stand-up comedy special.
Rita Rudner has written five books; her bestselling non-fiction titles, Naked Beneath My Clothes, Rita Rudner’s Guide to Men and I Still Have It…I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It, plus the novels Tickled Pink and Turning the Tables. The audio version of Naked Beneath My Clothes received a Grammy nomination. Her autobiography, My Life in Dog Years is available on Rita’s website and on Amazon.
Rudner is a frequent collaborator with her writer/producer husband of thirty years, Martin Bergman. The couple’s first produced film script was Peter’s Friends. The film, starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Kenneth Branagh, Imelda Staunton, Stephen Fry, and Rita, won the Evening Standard Peter Sellers Award for Best British Film and was nominated for the Goya Award for Best European Film of 1994. The script was nominated for a WGA Best Screenplay Award and Rita won Best Supporting Actress at the American Comedy Awards.
The couple’s second film project, a TV movie called A Weekend In The Country, starred Rita, Jack Lemmon, Dudley Moore, Richard Lewis, Christine Lahti, Betty White and Faith Ford.
Bergman and Rudner’s last film, Thanks, premiered at the 2011 Palm Springs International Film Festival, won several awards on the film festival circuit and was bought by and frequently aired on Showtime.
In 2003, Rudner launched from Las Vegas her first syndicated daily TV show, Ask Rita, which featured a panel of celebrities lightheartedly attempting to solve personal problems submitted by members of the public; it ran for two years. For her work on the show, American Women In Radio and Television awarded Rudner a Gracie Allen Award for Best Program Host.
Rita helped write the 2001 and 2003 Oscar shows with Steve Martin and the 2002 Oscar broadcast with Whoopi Goldberg.
Rita Rudner moved to New York at the age of fifteen to become a dancer on Broadway. She appeared in several shows, including the original productions of Follies and Mack and Mabel. It was while in Annie on Broadway that she began exploring the comedy clubs of Manhattan. In the early ‘80s, Rudner took a full-time leap from chorus lines to punch lines and was soon a regular guest on both Late Night With David Letterman and The Tonight Show.
In 2009, Rita, Bette Midler and Sheryl Crow joined forces to perform a fundraiser for President Obama and the Democratic leader of the Senate, Harry Reid.
In 2012, Rita and Martin wrote and performed The Rita Rudner Show for BBC radio in London. Rita also appeared in the Showtime comedy special Rita Rudner and Three Potential Ex-Husbands.
In June 2016 Rita was invited and honored to speak about her career and technique in comedy at Cambridge University, England. In 2017 she was invited by Oprah Winfrey to appear on a cruise to Alaska that Oprah did in partnership with Holland America.
In 2018, Rita’s tenth TV special was released – A Tale Of Two Dresses. The special also featured Rita and Martin’s singer/songwriter daughter Molly Bergman.

She's a contributor for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Cut, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, The Observer, McSweeney's, and Vulture, and she's written sketches for Comedy Central . Forbes profiled her as a rising satire star, and she was on Paste's list of top humorists. She now touring with her one-woman stand-up show, I Finished My 20s and All I Got Was This Stupid Sobriety.
In 2022, Chronicle Books published Ginny's second humor collection I'M MORE DATEABLE THAN A PLATE OF REFRIED BEANS. Excerpts have been featured in the New Yorker, Bustle, and the Cut, and it was named a top Vulture humor book of 2022.

Paul Moomjean is a stand up comedian, actor, and writer living in Los Angeles. He has worked for Nickelodeon, Viacom, and been on Laughs on Fox. Before starting stand up, Paul was a teacher and college professor. Curently he resides in the San Fernando Valley, his hometown. Paul recorded a comedy special for VidAngel in 2017 and his album "Guys Like You and Me" was released in 2018. Paul recorded a popular Drybar special that is available on YouTube called “It’s Hard Being Fat in Los Angeles” and has since dropped a lot of the weight he talked about in that special. Dewayne White is a DC-based standup comedian who performs all over the country. He’s a combat-wounded veteran who served in the Army for 23 years. His humor is drawn from his unique take on his military experience, his life as a husband and father, and the general craziness of life.
Dewayne started performing standup with the Armed Services Arts Partnership’s Comedy Bootcamp, a crash course in standup comedy for veterans and family members which he now teaches. Ken Garr grew up on the south side of Chicago. The son of a retired Chicago Fire Fighter and Homemaker, Ken proudly hails from three generations of fire fighters. The youngest of 4 children, Ken’s hilarious views on life are derived on growing up in a blue collar family with his own white collar aspirations.
A former Managing Director at NASDAQ, Ken spent 13 years in corporate sales before leaving 6 years ago to pursue his dream of being a stand up comedian and motivational speaker. When Mo Alexander hits the stage, it’s clear that you’re in the hands of a man who knows what he’s doing. With comedy influences such as Bill Hicks, Paul Mooney, and Richard Pryor, Mo combines intelligence and debauchery into a product that is just as funny as it is important.
With an ability to access both the smartest and the stupidest parts of your brain, there’s a reason this comedy phenom has been headlining comedy clubs nationwide for over 20 years.
Mo began his professional full-time comedy career in July 1996 featuring in clubs throughout the United States and by 1999 he was headlining.
In 1998 Mo made an appearance in Bret Michael’s film, A Letter from Death Row.
After impressing Keenan Ivory Wayans with a good natured roast, Mo was invited to be the opening act on tour with Keenan in 1999.
In 2003 he was given his own Las Vegas show, “The Mo Funny Show” at the Casino Royale.
In the past few years Mo has been on several syndicated radio shows in major markets, such as Bob & Tom (Indianapolis), and Mancow (Chicago). He made his way through the ranks to become a semi-finalist in both the San Francisco Comedy Competition (2012) and the Seattle Comedy Competition (2013) and has been a headliner at a number of comedy festivals such as: Asheville Comedy Fest (2015), Altercation Comedy Festival (2016 & 2018), Hopkins Comedy Festival (2017), Memphis Comedy Festival (2017), North Carolina Comedy Festival (2018).
On December 15, 2017 Mo’s first national stand-up appearance aired on Comedy Central where he appeared in Kevin Hart’s “Hart of the City: Memphis”
Mo has released four CD’s: Evolution (2006), Nappy Headed Hoes and Other FCC Infractions (2008), Just in Case the Mayans are Right….(2016) (featured on the iTunes new and notable charts front page for 5 months), and Got Clots (2016).
Got Clots is a hilarious look at life, chronicling 77 days of hospitalization, as can only be told from inside the comedic mind of Mo Alexander and was released exactly one year from the time of his first death and resurrection which occurred on April 5, 2015 (Easter Sunday).
Mo is excited to announce his signing with record label Stand Up! Records owned by Grammy Award Winner Dan Schlissel. In Septemeber of 2019, Mo made history by becoming the first comedian ever to record an album at world famous Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. The album is as yet unnamed and it’s release is to be announced soon.

Lace Larrabee is an Atlanta-based actor and nationally touring stand-up comedian who can be seen at clubs from coast to coast. Tyson Cox loves comedy, plain and simple. Chasing this dream he’s slept in his cramped car and flown on… cramped airplanes. But in his travels he’s made memories, fans, and friends. This joy can be felt when he performs and it has lead him to get the chance to do things he only dreamed of when growing up on a farm.
He’s performed all over this country at many great clubs, casinos, bars, basements, open fields, and army bases. He’s shared the stage with a few celebrities sure but he's also got to perform with and impress his personal favorites, and a few scoundrels. [You know who you are]
He also uses his powers for good, he gives back by putting on a monthly comedy show benefitting the Indianapolis Humane Society.

Linda Marcus Smith started comedy later in life after serving in the Army and sustaining a debilitating brain injury. After being estranged from her daughter, Linda felt hopeless and needed something to get her out of bed every day. Fortunately for the comedy community, she chose standup. Since then, Linda has moved to Las Vegas and is a huge supporter of the comedy scene there along with all the comedians she’s met. Linda’s YouTube channel The Comics Spot has nearly 1,000 interviews with comedians who are up and coming along with some of the greats like Sinbad and Tom Dreesen. Linda has a compelling story. Drew Harmon is a comedian and former TV weatherman who moved from San Francisco to Detorit. Shanna Christmas was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. She is a stand up comedian, writer, actor and producer. She stands at 6’3’’ and played volleyball in college, despite much protest.
Her comedy style has been described as “Edgy/Classy” as she finds ways to speak about complicated issues that can offend, but she’s so charming that you can’t be mad at her.
Shanna has performed across North America, including Montreal and Edmonton in Canada. You can see her backside on episode 5 of Amazon’s “Inside Jokes” cause she crashed JFL. She can also be seen on an upcoming season of “Coming To The Stage,” which she was invited to do.
Shanna’s festival appearances include the 208 Festival, Altercation Festival, Black Girl Giggles, Black Women In Comedy Festival (NY) and the Devil Cup Festival, where she took home the trophy in 2018. She was also a finalist in the inaugural ABFF Comedy fest in 2021.
In addition to producing successful all black women stand up shows, Shanna also a co-hosts the “Topical Smoothie” podcast. She’s currently working on a book about her life as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in nursing homes which will be available in September, 2021. She can also be seen in a short film called, “Dark Wolf Gang,” produced by AFI.

David Murrell is the lead and founding pastor of South Bend Vineyard Church in South Bend, Indiana. Ever since David can remember, his calling was to plant a church. After three years on staff at a local Vineyard Church, David knew it was time to break into new territory and plant on the other side of town. David is the father of two and husband to his beautiful wife, Kim.

Most of America knows Andy Huggins from his standout appearance on America’s Got Talent in 2018. We all gasped a little when Howie Mandell recognized him from their days starting out together at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. All of Houston comedy looked on as one of their own took center stage on one of the nation’s largest talent competitions.
What most people don’t realize about Andy is just how married he is to stand up comedy. He’s the elder statesman of the Houston scene. At 72 years old, he is at a different mic or show 3-5 nights a week. His legal pad never leaves his side. He talks theory with new comedians and old. I’ve personally never seen someone embody an art like Andy does stand up.
Which is what makes the non-existence of an Andy Huggins comedy special so tragic and in such desperate need of repair.

Katz started his involvement in the film business when he helped Chappelle and Neal Brennan (who eventually went on to create Chappelle’s Show) sell the cult classic Half Baked to Universal Studios and went on to produce several films after that, including Employee of the Month (starring Jessica Simpson and Cook), Good Luck Chuck (starring Jessica Alba), My Best Friend’s Girl (starring Kate Hudson and Alec Baldwin), I Killed JFK (about the only living person in history to admit to killing Kennedy), and Misery Loves Comedy (starring Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Judd Apatow, and Larry David).
Katz was the first manager to work with a comedy artist to use social media to accelerate their career, with Dane Cook. At the height of his popularity, he was able to press a button on his computer and sell out 2 shows in one night at Boston Garden and 2 shows in one night at Madison Square Garden for a total of 75,000 tickets sold in less than a week—which had never been done before. In the recording world, he has produced Grammy nominated, multiple gold, platinum, and double platinum albums, while becoming the only manager/producer to debut a comedy album in Billboard’s top 5 national charts–twice.
In other facets of the business, Katz was one of the driving forces and co-founders of Comedy Dynamics, which has become one of the largest independent comedy production and distribution companies in the world. Additionally, he was involved in the original sale of the Emmy-nominated Comedy Central Roasts to the network, which has become one of the longest running, most profitable, annual specials franchises in the history of TV.

Damon Sumner has been bringing laughter to people’s lives even before he held a mic on a stage. He has continued to hone his craft and every time he touches the stage, he delivers hilarious stories about his upbringing, and witty, high-energy observations of everyday life. A standup comedian for more than twenty-five years, Drew Hastings has inhabited the American comedy scene with a distinct perspective. His commanding stage presence has always delivered intelligent material with an edge, be it his observations of the human condition or the declining state of American society. What has always made Hastings’ standup and storytelling unique though is his ability to incorporate his wildly varied careers into his act , whether it’s a disastrous foray into a records shredding business, diving into farming at the age of fifty—truly farmageddon—or his unlikely time as a small city mayor.
Drew’s comedy specials, late-night tv appearances, and his status as an all-time favorite on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom radio show have given him a wide following, particularly in the Midwest. He is one of the few people ever to appear on The Tonight show two separate times for two different careers.
Born in Casablanca, Morocco to a British mother and American father, Drew has spent most of his life in Southwestern Ohio except for a twelve year stretch in Hollywood. In 2004, he fled California saying, At the end of the day the sun doesn’t set in L.A.—it just gives up and drops into the ocean with a bitter hiss. Drew settled in Hillsboro, Ohio to try his hand as a cattle producer in between a busy comedy tour schedule. His farming misadventures went into his standup and Drew gained an entirely new audience, the agricultural community, further expanding his popularity in the Midwest. In 2011, Hastings ran for mayor of Hillsboro on a populist campaign. “I think this Country is going to Hell in a hand basket. I can’t do anything about the whole U.S. but I can do something about the one place I live.” Outspoken and blunt, he won in a landslide and got to work turning around the city's financial woes and make critical infrastructure improvements. Incensed when Hastings won a second term in 2016, he was targeted by a small faction of elected officials in what most observers called a political witch hunt. Drew was indicted on four felonies, the most serious charge being the dumping of his trash into a city dumpster. He was found not guilty, acquitted of all charges and served out his second term.
About “Chasing Drew Hastings”:
When Drew Hastings was seven years old, his father, also named Drew Hastings, left the family, remarried, and had another son, named Drew Hastings. “Suddenly there were three Drew Hastings,” Hastings writes, “me, the one who left me, and the one who replaced me.” And so begins a life-long pursuit of a name, and one long, slow skid toward the realization that we’re all just making it up as we go along.
The son of a single mother, Hastings picks his way through suburban and urban Ohio, obsessed with proving himself against the backdrop of the counterculture of the Sixties and Seventies. He opens a paper shredding business, tries his hand as a rug salesman, even dabbles in muskrat trapping. Most enterprises end in disaster and nothing lasts long. Finally someone suggests standup comedy—friends always said he was funny, plus the idea of ‘Drew Hastings’ on marquees all over the country is too much to pass up. He moves to Hollywood where he flirts with fame but can’t quite bring himself to grovel long enough. And just as a dark depression takes hold, he finally bolts, buys a farm in rural Appalachian Ohio, and at the age of fifty, starts over, breeding cattle, developing real estate, and yes, becoming the mayor of Hillsboro, Ohio.
Refreshingly honest and darkly funny, Chasing Drew Hastings is a wide-ranging memoir of a life ruled by misadventure and coincidence, growing up a confused kid and striving to find out what it means to be a man. Drawing on everything from small town politics to the ambition and malaise of show biz, Drew Hastings reckons with American masculinity, fatherhood, and inheritance head on. Unlikely, irreverent, and wholly original, the result is endlessly entertaining, and perhaps even inadvertently revelatory.

I met Trent Babb during the height of the pandemic on Joel Byars’ Hot Breath network. We did a couple feedback mics together and I watched him really lean into his comedy writing. Trent has really impressed me with his “crowdsourcing” his jokes by bouncing them off complete strangers in a comedy writing Facebook group and posting some of his great clips. Eddie Brill is a well respected, very funny and talented stand up comedian.
In addition to performing in 46 of the 50 states in the US, Eddie has also done stand-up in England, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, France, Holland, Dhaka and Hong Kong.
For seventeen years, he worked on The Late Show with David Letterman. He served as the audience warm-up and for eleven of those years he was the Stand Up Comedy Talent Coordinator.
Eddie has taped more than 100 TV shows in six different countries, including ten appearances on The Late Show and on an Emmy nominated episode of the FX hit series, “Louie.”
A 3-time MAC award winner for Outstanding Male Comic in NYC, he has hosted and performed for hundreds of corporate events, including ESPN, Glaxo Welcome. Hyatt Hotels and BMC Software.
He performed on some of the greatest stages in the world including The Shrine Auditorium and Radio City Music Hall.
He has been the audience warm-up for many shows including the “Dana Carvey Show,” “Madigan Men,” “This is Your Life” and for a short time, early episodes of Saved By The Bell.”
He has appeared in numerous films as an actor, including, “30 Years To Life” with Tracy Morgan. He has used his voice talents in many animated series including Comedy Central’s “Dr Katz” and ABC’s “Science Court.”
Eddie produces and helps book stand-up talent all over the world. He was the architect and for the first ten years, was the creative director of the wildly successful “Great American Comedy Festival.” It honors Johnny Carson in his hometown of Norfolk, Nebraska.
He had assisted in booking the US acts for the International TV show, “The World Stands Up.”
He also ran the incredibly popular “Paper Moon” comedy club in NYC that gave many comics their first big break.
He also helped create the Emerson Comedy Workshop, founded in 1976, which continues to thrive today. He currently teaches a highly acclaimed stand-up comedy workshop worldwide that helps comics young and old to take their comedy work to the next level.
He is often called upon to help punch up film and comedy scripts.
Eddie hosts, performs and helps raise money for many benefits including The Roberto Clemente Foundation (for underprivileged children), The David Ortiz Children’s Fund, Sisters in Survival (women with Breast cancer). Shanda Sung is a comedian from Bloomington, Indiana. Her stand up has been seen by audiences throughout the Midwest. Shanda was featured on the album On Tour Live from Bloomington and the premiere episode of the Vice network show Hunters. She has been featured at the Limestone Comedy Festival, the Milwaukee Comedy Festival and the Finger Lakes Comedy Festival. She is the co-host of the podcast Passing Notes with Ashley and Shanda. Geoff Plitt has an engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon and is an ex-Google employee. After studying at Second City and iO in Chicago, Geoff moved to LA to be a standup comic and joke writer. Carl Sobel is a Grand Rapids, Michigan based comedian who doesn’t wait for opportunities to perform to come to him. He makes his own opportunities. With his “Comedy on Ida”, Carl gave comedy fans and performers a safe and socially distant place to see comedy during the pandemic. Carl built a stage in his garage and created an outdoor space so that people could get some laughs during a dark time. For most of his life, Jeff Altman resided in Los Angeles where he was a sought after stand up comedian, as well as an accomplished actor, starring and guest starring in TV shows the likes of the Dukes of Hazzard, Nurses, Baywatch, Night Court and the Tonight Show plus many others. In his career, Jeff starred in over 30 national commercial campaigns where he represented such companies as Budweiser, Arby's, Panasonic and General Motors. His movie credits include American Hot Wax, Easy Money, Highlander 2, Soul man and Doin' Time. And, of course, over 40 appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Now, because of the strangest of love stories, Jeff has moved to Central North Carolina and is focusing on his life long love of sleight of hand card magic. Growing up in Syracuse, New York, Jeff's love of card magic was instilled in him at an early age, as his dad, Arthur Altman, was one of the finest card handlers in the country. It wasn't long before Jeff, as a young boy, began fiddling with a deck of cards. Somehow, despite some of his "strange behaviors" Jeff was accepted into Johns Hopkins University to study Social and Behavioral Sciences. During his time in Baltimore, Jeff became close friends with card man extraordinaire, Frank Thompson. After graduating from college, Jeff immediately set his sights on Hollywood and the world famous Magic Castle. It was during this time at the "Castle" that Jeff was able to meet and befriend such card greats as Steve Freeman, Ricky Jay and the greatest of them all the "Professor" Dai Vernon.
As his close friend David Letterman says: "If the magic has gone out of your life, call my friend, Jeff Altman, close up card handling at its finest. If you are not amazed and delighted, you may need a full neurological work up, He can do that too!"

Nina Kraus, Ph.D., is a scientist, inventor, and amateur musician who studies the biology of auditory learning. She began her career measuring responses from single auditory neurons and was one of the first to show that the adult nervous system has the potential for reorganization following learning; these insights in basic biology galvanized her to investigate auditory learning in humans.
Through a series of innovative studies involving thousands of research participants from birth to age 90, her research has found that our lives in sound, for better (musicians, bilinguals) or worse (language disorders, concussion, aging, hearing loss), shape auditory processing. She continues to conduct parallel experiments in animal models to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these phenomena.
Never having accepted a lack of technology as a roadblock to scientific discovery, Kraus has invented new ways to measure the biology of sound processing in humans that provide unprecedented precision and granularity in indexing brain function. With her technological innovations she is now pushing science beyond the traditional laboratory by conducting studies in schools, community centers, and clinics.
Using the principles of neuroscience to improve human communication, she advocates for best practices in education, health, and social policy.

Making sense of sound is one of the hardest jobs we ask our brains to do. In Of Sound Mind, Nina Kraus examines the partnership of sound and brain, showing for the first time that the processing of sound drives many of the brain's core functions. Greg Warren, most recently seen on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show and Comedy Central Presents, has built a strong fan base with an act inspired by his Midwestern upbringing. Liz Miele, originally from New Jersey, started doing stand-up at 16 in New York City. At 18 she was profiled in The New Yorker Magazine, at 22 she appeared on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham.” She recently appeared on Comedy Central’s “This Week at the Comedy Cellar,” NPR’s “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me,” Hulu’s “Coming To The Stage,” AXS TV’s “Gotham Comedy Live,” and was profiled in the March 2015 issue of Runner’s World.
She has several viral videos on Youtube, Instagram and Tiktok including jokes “Feminist Sex Positions,” “F*ck Finland,” and “London Cops Are Better Than American Cops” She regularly tours internationally and has three albums out on spotify and itunes and released her first special “Self Help Me” in May 2020 free on youtube. Her first book, “Why Cats Are Assholes” is available everywhere March 30th 2021.
She wrote and produced season one of her animated web series “Damaged,” voiced by great comics including, Maz Jobrani, Hari Kondabolu, Ted Alexandro, Jermaine Fowler, Dean Edwards, DC Benny, Joe Machi and so many more. She also co-produced and co-starred in 40 episodes of a web series called “Apt C3” with fellow comic, Carmen Lynch and fashion photographer, Chris Vongsawat.

Erica Switzer is a Chicago-born educator, comedian, and public speaker formerly based in Shanghai, China. With her unique energy and raw, biting wit, she has featured for veteran comedians Simeon Goodson, Mateen Stewart, and Justin Rivera and accomplished her first 30-minute headliner in April 2020. Along with founding Hei Now Comedy, China's premier Black comedy crew, Erica became the first Black comedian to perform in Mongolia at the inaugural Silk Road International Comedy Festival in July 2019. She has emceed Shanghai Black Expo and the inaugural For The Culture Awards Gala. Erica is also an award-winning public speaker. Brian Hicks is from Chicago but calls the stage he’s on tonight home. Brian’s easy going style and hilarious stories about being a husband and father have made him popular with any audience who is lucky enough to have purchased a ticket to see him perform. Bob Fredricks started stand-up 10 years ago and released his debut album “Burger Prince” last year. He’s run and promoted shows for most of his career and has a lot of insight as to how to not only get better at comedy but be someone who is attractive to being a booker. Phil Johnson has an action packed show filled with his two loves, comedy and music. In May of 2017, he was honored to perform on "Rock on the Range", the nation's largest rock music festival, headlined by Metallica.
An admitted workaholic, Sabo has released six full length comedy albums, including 2009's "A Mouthful of Sea-Monkeys" which was heralded as "One of the top ten comedy albums of 2009" according to the Serious Comedy Site. His plans to record his newest CD, "Put Away Wet" have been delayed due to Covid-19 lockdowns. However, instead of sitting on his laurels he took the opportunity to write and release his first novel, a thriller titled "Jester's Run" in late 2020 and his latest book, "How to FAIL at Stand-Up Comedy" in April of 2021. All of his releases are available on Amazon and I-Tunes.
Known among his peers as a consummate professional and a comedy chameleon, he has the ability to adjust his act to his environment. Whether the situation calls for a clean show, a dirty show or something in between, he has the experience and material to satisfy any crowd. Considered adult-friendly and intelligent, his honest and observational style, topped with a high energy and frenetic pace, has made him a fan favorite from coast to coast.

They came up with a Live Show App. This app has open mics every day and now has scheduled shows. 2 great things about a Live Show App: 1. It costs nothing! You don’t have to buy anything to participate and you don’t get deluged with ads. 2. You don’t need to have a great internet connection to participate. This is only on your phone and 4G/5G will work fine. Comedians need to work out new material and this is the most convenient and time-saving way to do it. I believe this app is a game changer to help comedians find their A & B material Before they hit the stage. Mark Riccadonna grew up an artsy jock outside of Youngstown, Ohio. At age 17 (like a bad independent movie), Mark moved to NYC in search of himself and happiness. He pursued Theatre at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, joining “The Company” after graduation. Soon after, Mark stumbled upon Stand-Up Comedy and found success as a storyteller, performing throughout New York City, and ‘on the road’. Mark also performs for Armed Forces Entertainment and has entertained U.S. and U.N. Troops worldwide, performing in six continents and across the United States. Outside of comedy, Mark is an accomplished actor and writer. Dustin Chafin is a stand-up comedian based in New York City who The New York Times said “is getting laughs every time he speaks.” Chafin has had the honor of touring with the USO, performing for the troops in Korea, Japan, Africa and Iraq. He is a regular on SiriusXM, where he’s been featured on Jim Breuer Unleashed, Court TV Radio, Blue Collar Radio, Howard Stern Radio, Howard Demand, The Insight Channel and Raw Dog. Chafin brought down the house on Showtime's White Boyz in the Hood and was also featured on ABC’s special coverage of the New York Comedy Festival. Art Bell got his dream job working for HBO after working with the government and CBS. That dream job was predicting subscriber numbers and wasn’t all that glamorous. Then he came up with the idea of a 24 hour comedy channel and that idea was promptly shut down. He pitched it again and Michael Fuchs, the head of HBO liked it. The channel became Comedy Central and Art’s new book “Constant Comedy – How I Started Comedy Central and Lost My Sense of Humor” tells the story of the tumultuous early days of the channel.

My hometown club is reopening in a new location. The Drop Comedy Club has a new home at the Aloft Hotel in Downtown South Bend, IN. I talked to Heather O’Laughlin & Jim Kliss, two of the partners in at The Drop about the reopening and having the great Stewart Huff kick off opening weekend as their headliner. One of New York City’s top comedians. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Wali was and still is an accomplished drummer. Wali has played in R&B, Pop, Funk and Jazz bands. And he was the youngest to ever join the New England Jazz Society.
After College, Wali was working on being the best Architect New England has ever known. But the calling for show business was too strong. He played in bands, did session work, but that wasn’t enough. He needed more.
Always having a keen sense of humor, his parents urged him to try stand-up comedy. His first time on stage Wali was convinced that he had bombed, but the manager paid him and asked him to come back every week as a featured act. Wali Collins has been going strong ever since. Wali moved to New York City to work on a show for Comedy Central called “Stand-up Stand-up”. He hosted the largest funniest, most varied collection of stand-up comedians in the world.
He also landed small roles in films like the independent feature, "Submission", starring Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock's "Top Five". And in the "cult" classic, “Coyote Ugly”.

April thought she had finally found Mr. Right and became engaged after just three dates with the man of her dreams. However, her fiancé became increasingly jealous of her 16 ventriloquist puppets that she uses in her one-woman touring show. In less than a year, he gave her an ultimatum: “It’s either me or your puppets!”
The British tabloid “The Daily Mail” ignited a firestorm of press coverage for April Brucker with a feature story headlined, “Ventriloquist who splashes out £134,000 a year on her 16 PUPPETS that even have their own bedroom dumps her fiancé after he tells her, ‘It’s them or me!’”
The story spread internationally thanks to dozens of foreign newspapers and magazines and went viral on the Web. And then came obsessed suitors from all over the world. Now her dating resume includes stalkers, ex-cons and of course restraining orders. Police sirens often accompany April when she is breaking up with an obsessed suitor.
April isn’t asking for the moon. She doesn’t want a doctor, lawyer, or Native American chieftain. If you can deal with those things, you are Mr. Okay and maybe your one arrest and partial lobotomy just may be okay, too.
April earned her BFA in Acting in 2007 from New York University Tisch School of the Arts and in 2019 was awarded an MFA in Creative Writing/Screenwriting from Antioch University Los Angeles. She has been a volunteer advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness, LGBTQ+ rights, cervical cancer awareness, anti-bullying, domestic violence prevention and body positivity. She has authored "Don't Read My Lips! — America's Foremost Female Ventriloquist Reveals the Secrets of a Successful Vent" (ISBN: 0984208585) and “I Came, I Saw, I Sang: Memoirs of a Singing Telegram Delivery Girl” (ISBN 0741477939), which are available from bookstores and online retailers.

Corey Ryan Forrester’s love for comedy started when he was a toddler watching Carson (and then Leno) from a blanket on the floor next to his daddy Dale. By 2nd grade, he had already informed his teachers that he was going to be a comedian and didn’t ever consider another profession. At age 16, he worked up the nerve to do his first open mic (lying about his age to be admitted into the club).
Corey spent the next decade hawking jokes in dingy bars and comedy clubs at night then waking up to do random jobs to supplement his income. A house painter, retail associate, motorcycle salesman, urine sample collector, flower delivery boy, hotel maid, college textbook reseller and hay bailer. At one point in his career, he ran a family bakery with his mother where he was considered the “Head Quiche Chef”.
Corey’s stand up blends humor and common sense into a high energy act that is as full of as many silly faces and goofy jokes as it is emotionally driven tangents. Under his PBR hat is a giant head, and under that are surprisingly thought-provoking rants on society, culture, and politics.
Corey & I talked about stand-up comedy which made him very happy. The journey he started when he was 16 writing bits on MySpace and has taken him to an international audience has been quite a ride.

He found out his keen sense of humor and natural ability at marketing made him a great all-around entertainer and spokesperson. Leighann Lord has been performing comedy in all parts of the globe for 25 years. She also has the distinction of being and actor, author, & keynote speaker. Leighann graduated Magnum Cum Laude from Baruch College with a degree in Creative Writing & Journalism. From there, she chose to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Born into a biracial family, Collin quickly realized he had to embrace diversity or go crazy. Choosing the former (the jury’s still out on the crazy part), he learned to make fun of his differences while developing a unique brand of standup. Collin’s humor manages to artfully touch on areas usually considered taboo, letting him cover topics that most are afraid to tackle. His level of skill led to the honor of being selected for TEDxSaltLakeCity 2018 as the expert to speak on comedy.
Since hitting his first open mic at Seattle’s Comedy Underground when he was barely 17, Collin has come a long way. His unique adoption of dark comedy has allowed him to perform across North America and Europe at clubs, colleges, and even a stadium. His humor proves irresistible to audiences, earning him a position as Niantic’s lead live broadcaster for 2016, as well as a nomination as one of Utah’s top comedians, and various other accolades.
Whether talking at the Capitol as a featured speaker at the “Walk of No Shame” against sexual assault, or on the stage at Kingsbury Hall discussing joking about trauma, Collin uses over a decade of experience as a nationally touring standup comedian to make the audience laugh, uplifting and inspiring even when talking about even some of the darkest and most controversial topics.
His current nationally touring comedy show discusses his personal experiences as a sexual assault and suicide survivor in a way that made The Daily Utah Chronicle Say “All of us loved it.”. And the owner of the WIP theater in Chicago highly recommends it saying “Collin’s show is one of the best dark comedy shows you’ll ever see”

Chicago based Paul Farahvar has continued to delight audiences with his self-deprecating dry humor, centered on being a single son of disappointed middle eastern parents. After becoming a regular at Chicago stand up clubs like Zanies, Comedy Bar and Laugh Factory, Farahvar was given the rare opportunity to host and produce his own monthly (now weekly) called "Drink Date Laugh" about dating and a comedic game show called "Everyone's a Lawyer" both at the World Famous Laugh Factory. He also regularly tours the country as a headliner and opening for national headliners Demetri Martin, Jen Kirkman and Gary Gulman.

From Marc's Bio:When Marc Sheffler was approaching his eighth birthday, his father asked him what he wanted. Without hesitation, Marc asked his dad for The Three Stooges -- and his dad got them, hiring the famous slapstick threesome to perform at his party in front of him and his very lucky guests. That afternoon The Stooges brought Marc on stage with them as part of their act and made him the “Fourth Stooge.” That’s the where, when and how Marc Sheffler got bitten by the bug.About 10 years later, Marc began his professional career as a stage actor in Off-Broadway theater. His best-known film role is that of the teenage “Junior Stillo” in Wes Craven’s first film, Last House on the Left (1972). After Last House, Marc decided to pursue a career in stand-up comedy, writing and producing. He has appeared at the Improv, the Comedy Store on Sunset, and his name is inscribed on the Comedy Store Wall of Fame along with contemporaries Jay Leno, Robin Williams, David Letterman and Billy Crystal.His writing and producing credits include Sister, Sister, Harry and The Hendersons, Who's the Boss, and Charles in Charge to name but a few. He's also been involved with many pilots, made for TV movies, and television specials. He also worked with Mel Blanc, the voice of Warner Bros. cartoons, as the writer of How Bugs Bunny Won The West (1978).In 2002, Marc turned his attention to feature films and with Marlon Parry, produced David DeFalco’s controversial Chaos and in 2006, he co-wrote and produced another horror film, Girls Gone Dead.
