"Some of What I Learned on My Sabbatical: Reclaiming Time and Empathy"
Sunday, February 26, 10:50 am

The gift of sabbatical is supposed to be about time -- fallow time, time "on the balcony" of your own life, time to rekindle flames that burn low. What I found was a new thread in an ongoing tapestry I have been weaving about time and my struggles with and against it; and about empathy. The two are related.

As UK Independent electronic music label Selador Recordings approaches its 10th anniversary, preparations to mark the occasion are well underway. The imprint was started by Dave Seaman & Steve Parry back in 2013 and has been at the forefront of club culture for the last decade, bringing its mantra of quality House and Techno and all shades in-between to clubbers and music fans around the globe. The label’s distinctive rabbit head logo has become a byword for genuine quality and consistency in a saturated marketplace - so it’s only fitting that fate has decreed that the birthday coincides with the Year of the Rabbit.Selador are planning a series of celebratory releases befitting of this milestone, with an array of artists who’ve appeared on the label over the last decade being invited to collaborate on tracks together. It’s an impressive list which showcases the respect in which original Acid House Lifers Dave and Steve are held.As per with Selador, it’s a truly international affair, with every continent represented. The mouth-watering partnerships include:3D (Danny Howells, Darren Emerson, Dave Seaman) x Robert OwensOlivier Giacomotto x QuivverJepe x ArgiaAnthony Pappa x Jamie Stevens x Alice RoseDave Seaman x Hernan CattaneoSteve Parry x Renato CohenJust Her x Smash TVTokyo Fan Club x Hannes BiegerOona Dahl x Doc MartinTimo Maas x Robert BabiczZoo Brazil x Circulation…with more to be added very soon. And of course, there will be parties, the label’s raison d’etre. Following previous events at the likes of Space & Pikes in Ibiza, Watergate in Berlin and ADE in Amsterdam, the label's 10th birthday party will be in London at Studio 338 on Easter Sunday, in partnership with the team behind the highly respected Warm Up festival. The inimitable Hernán Cattáneo is jetting in specially to play an exclusive London set, joining Steve & Dave, long time cornerstone of the label Just Her, and the mighty Warm Up residents. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey CreceliusThis week the redoubtable Geoff Bailie presents his feedback on two remarkable Rick Wakeman concerts at the  London Palladium which, as you can imagine, contain a shedload of Yes connections. While most successful sidemen are lucky to spend a decade in the music business, multi-instrumentalist Mark Rivera is working on his fifth. Best known as Billy Joel's saxophonist as well as Musical Director for Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band, Rivera has shared the stage with some of Rock 'n' Roll's greatest performers, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Tony Bennett, Sheila E., Joe Walsh, Hall & Oates, and Peter Gabriel. How does he do it while avoiding the typical pitfalls-falling out of favor with the band, burnout, depression? A devoted father and husband for nearly forty years, Rivera's recollections in Sideman demonstrate that while he struggled to balance the two worlds-a rock 'n' roller circling the globe and a regular guy worried about putting food on the table-his body's compulsion to always be playing music kept him in constant pursuit of "the next gig." The sideman is put to the test as he recounts his past from the confines of a global pandemic, and the man accustomed to "keeping up with the music" is forced to put down his instruments and reflect. Full of optimism, humor, and candor, Rivera turns the spotlight on the sideman's life, revealing not only what it takes to climb the industry ladder (and stay there), but something more surprising: a bit of ourselves rocking out amongst all those superstars. Mark Rivera is best known as Billy Joel’s saxophonist, as well as Musical Director for Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. Rivera is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who over the past 50 years has shared the stage and supported some of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest performers, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Tony Bennett, Sheila E., Joe Walsh, Hall & Oates, and Peter Gabriel. Mark 11:22-24 “ And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.” Today's episode talks about how important it is to remember that God is responsible for answering our prayers. It also talks about how we can not will ourselves to have more faith, faith is a gift from God. If you’ve wandered around Los Angeles and you swear you’ve spotted Frau Farbissina from Austin Powers or Miss Francine Briggs from iCarly or Linda Schwartz from The Goldbergs then you may have experienced a genuine Mindy Sterling encounter!

Mindy’s IMDB is vast and deep and it includes The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, A.N.T. Farm, Desperate Housewives, Captain Underpants, 2 Broke Girls and That’s So Raven. Many millennials have accidentally called her Mom.

Mindy shares her experiences growing up as a showbiz baby with a comedian dad and a showgirl mom, how she made her mark on the industry and how she then poured herself into raising a son on the Autism spectrum.

Mindy is Groundlings royalty and she elaborates on the history, discipline and legacy of improv comedy. Plus, she has worked extensively in children’s TV, including alongside Jennette McCurdy from iCarly whose best selling book, I’m Glad My Mom Died is a cautionary tale on the dangers of mixing kids with show business. Mindy shares her experiences working with Jennette and her fellow child actors.

All this plus anticipation on the Austin Powers front. Will there be another sequel…? Mindy has clues.

We're also joined by Journalist/Mental Health Advocate/Author Janeane Bernstein, EDd. Her books 'GET THE FUNK OUT! $%^& Happens, What to Do Next!' and the upcoming 'Better Humans: What The Mental Health Pandemic Teaches Us About Humanity' are changing the ways in which we look at mental and emotional health.

Janeane joins us to talk about the inspiration behind her talk show and books which explore how setbacks can become successes and how we can all better handle the inevitable challenges we face in life. All this plus we are recommending Hollywood on Netflix and Fire of Love on Hulu and Disney.

“Poetry is the attempt to understand fully what is real, what is present, what is imaginable, what is feelable, and how can I loosen the grip of what I already know to find some new, changed relationship,” the poet Jane Hirshfield tells me. Through poetry, she says, “I know something new and I have been changed.”Hirshfield is the award-winning author of nine books of poetry and two illuminating essay collections about what poetry does to us and in the world: “Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry” and “Ten Windows: How Great Poems Transform the World.” Her book “Ledger” is one I gift to people most often. Hirshfield’s true talent as a poet is her singular ability to imbue the ordinary, the invisible, the forgotten with a sense of majesty and wonder. Her work is littered with lines that force you to stop, to slow down, to notice what you might have missed or overlooked.Hirshfield’s work also raises some profound questions: What does it mean to grapple with our complicity in the climate crisis? Where does the self end and the rest of the world begin? How do we learn to desire what we previously dreaded or despised? This is one of those conversations that is hard to describe in words. But it was truly a delight for me to be a part of. And I think you’ll enjoy it too.Mentioned:The Iliad by HomerThe Odyssey by HomerGilgameshThe Beauty by Jane HirshfieldHow Emotions Are Made by Lisa Feldman BarrettFlow by Mihaly CsikszentmihalyiLiving with a Wild God by Barbara EhrenreichThe Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution by C.P. For this week’s episode we speak to Sean McManmon, a hugely experienced fly angler, and someone known as Mr Salmon in some circles in Ireland.

After decades working in the K Club he has guided US Presidents, rock stars, supermodels and golfing greats such as Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara.

From tales of giving the Secret Service the slip to catching 19 salmon in a day, Sean has a lifetime of memories, insights and most importantly, great stories and sums up exactly what fly fishing is all about in a life well-lived.

If we get to fish half as much as Sean has and seen half as much as he has seen, well, I think we’ll be happy with our fly fishing lives....

Morning: Numbers 28–29 Numbers 28–29 (Listen)Daily Offerings28 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Command the people of Israel and say to them, ‘My offering, my food for my food offerings, my pleasing aroma, you shall be careful to offer to me at its appointed time.’ 3 And you shall say to them, This is the food offering that you shall offer to the LORD: two male lambs a year old without blemish, day by day, as a regular offering. 4 The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; 5 also a tenth of an ephah1 of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with a quarter of a hin2 of beaten oil. 6 It is a regular burnt offering, which was ordained at Mount Sinai for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the LORD. 7 Its drink offering shall be a quarter of a hin for each lamb. In the Holy Place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the LORD. 8 The other lamb you shall offer at twilight. Like the grain offering of the morning, and like its drink offering, you shall offer it as a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

Sabbath Offerings9 “On the Sabbath day, two male lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering: 10 this is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings11 “At the beginnings of your months, you shall offer a burnt offering to the LORD: two bulls from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish; 12 also three tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for each bull, and two tenths of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram; 13 and a tenth of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for every lamb; for a burnt offering with a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the LORD. 14 Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull, a third of a hin for a ram, and a quarter of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt offering of each month throughout the months of the year. 15 Also one male goat for a sin offering to the LORD; it shall be offered besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

Passover Offerings16 “On the fourteenth day of the first month is the LORD’s Passover, 17 and on the fifteenth day of this month is a feast. Seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten. 18 On the first day there shall be a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, 19 but offer a food offering, a burnt offering to the LORD: two bulls from the herd, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old; see that they are without blemish; 20 also their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil; three tenths of an ephah shall you offer for a bull, and two tenths for a ram; 21 a tenth shall you offer for each of the seven lambs; 22 also one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you. 23 You shall offer these besides the burnt offering of the morning, which is for a regular burnt offering. 24 In the same way you shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. It shall be offered besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering. 25 And on the seventh day you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work.

Offerings for the Feast of Weeks26 “On the day of the firstfruits, when you offer a grain offering of new grain to the LORD at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, 27 but offer a burnt offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD: two bulls from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old; 28 also their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, three tenths of an ephah for each bull, two tenths for one ram, 29 a tenth for each of the seven lambs; 30 with one male goat, to make atonement for you. 31 Besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, you shall offer them and their drink offering. See that they are without blemish.

Offerings for the Feast of Trumpets29 “On the first day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets, 2 and you shall offer a burnt offering, for a pleasing aroma to the LORD: one bull from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish; 3 also their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, three tenths of an ephah3 for the bull, two tenths for the ram, 4 and one tenth for each of the seven lambs; 5 with one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you; 6 besides the burnt offering of the new moon, and its grain offering, and the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offering, according to the rule for them, for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the LORD.

Offerings for the Day of Atonement7 “On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation and afflict yourselves.4 You shall do no work, 8 but you shall offer a burnt offering to the LORD, a pleasing aroma: one bull from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old: see that they are without blemish. 9 And their grain offering shall be of fine flour mixed with oil, three tenths of an ephah for the bull, two tenths for the one ram, 10 a tenth for each of the seven lambs: 11 also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the sin offering of atonement, and the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

Offerings for the Feast of Booths12 “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall keep a feast to the LORD seven days. 13 And you shall offer a burnt offering, a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD, thirteen bulls from the herd, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old; they shall be without blemish; 14 and their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, three tenths of an ephah for each of the thirteen bulls, two tenths for each of the two rams, 15 and a tenth for each of the fourteen lambs; 16 also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering and its drink offering.

17 “On the second day twelve bulls from the herd, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 18 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 19 also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

20 “On the third day eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 21 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 22 also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering and its drink offering.

23 “On the fourth day ten bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 24 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 25 also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering and its drink offering.

26 “On the fifth day nine bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 27 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 28 also one male goat for a sin offering; besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering and its drink offering.

29 “On the sixth day eight bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 30 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 31 also one male goat for a sin offering; besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offerings.

32 “On the seventh day seven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without blemish, 33 with the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 34 also one male goat for a sin offering; besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

35 “On the eighth day you shall have a solemn assembly. You shall not do any ordinary work, 36 but you shall offer a burnt offering, a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD: one bull, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish, 37 and the grain offering and the drink offerings for the bull, for the ram, and for the lambs, in the prescribed quantities; 38 also one male goat for a sin offering; besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering and its drink offering.

39 “These you shall offer to the LORD at your appointed feasts, in addition to your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your grain offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings.”

40 5 So Moses told the people of Israel everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Evening: Mark 9:1–29 Mark 9:1–29 (Listen)9 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

The Transfiguration2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one1 on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,2 it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son;3 listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out4 and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”5

In this episode Jake Paul, Melissa Neely and Rachel Garrett dicuss what cermony means to them and what practices they have implemented.

Ceremony is a formal or ritualized event that is typically performed to commemorate or celebrate a significant occasion. Ceremonies can take on many different forms and are an important part of human culture and tradition. From weddings to graduations to religious ceremonies, there are a wide variety of ceremonies that people perform in their daily lives.

Weddings are perhaps the most well-known type of ceremony. A wedding ceremony typically involves a couple exchanging vows and rings in front of family and friends, and is often followed by a reception. Wedding ceremonies can be religious or secular, and can vary widely in their customs and traditions depending on the culture and location.

Another common type of ceremony is a graduation ceremony. Graduation ceremonies are typically held at the end of an academic year, and involve students receiving their diplomas or degrees. These ceremonies often involve speeches, music, and other traditions such as the wearing of caps and gowns.

Religious ceremonies are also an important part of many people's lives. These can include ceremonies such as baptisms, bar and bat mitzvahs, confirmations, and funerals. These ceremonies often involve rituals and symbols that are specific to the particular religion or faith.

Overall, ceremonies are an important part of human culture and tradition. They can help us to mark significant occasions, celebrate important milestones, and connect with others in a meaningful way. Whether it's a wedding, graduation, or religious ceremony, or an everyday ritual, ceremonies help us to create a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes to many aspects of daily life, including the way that we perform ceremonies. With social distancing measures and restrictions on large gatherings in place, people have had to adapt their ceremonies in order to comply with public health guidelines and keep themselves and others safe.

Virtual ceremonies have also allowed people who may not have been able to attend in person to participate, such as friends and family who live in different parts of the country or the world. In some cases, virtual ceremonies have even allowed people to attend who might not have been able to participate due to mobility or health issues.

In addition to virtual ceremonies, people have also had to adjust the way that they perform in-person ceremonies. For example, weddings and funerals have had to limit the number of attendees, with many choosing to have smaller, more intimate gatherings instead. This has allowed people to still participate in these important events while also keeping themselves and others safe.

While these changes have been necessary in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, they have also brought about a sense of loss and disruption for many people. The pandemic has prevented people from gathering and celebrating in the ways that they are accustomed to, which has been challenging for many.

However, these changes have also brought about new ways of connecting and celebrating. Virtual ceremonies, for example, have allowed people to participate in events that they might not have been able to otherwise, and have brought people together from all over the world.

While it is uncertain how long these changes will last, it is clear that people are finding innovative ways to adapt and continue to mark significant occasions in a meaningful way.

Welcome to episode 516 of the Trading Justice Podcast where Matt and Mark discuss what is working in this market. The broad markets have been selling off the last couple of weeks but that hasn’t meant that there isn’t things that are working in these current market conditions. Cash flow has certainly been working in this environment as the selloff has been quite orderly to this point creating ample opportunities on both side of the cash flow bearish/bullish equation. Matt and Mark discuss the current cash flow environment. What also might be working in coming weeks are commodities as the China reopening/refining of their economy is picking up steam again. Cash flow + commodities…not the worst idea in the world and Matt and Mark discuss this in the podcast. So sit back and watch that theta burn as you enjoy another episode of the Trading Justice podcast!
