Quizbusters #1: Back to the Future
Welcome to the first episode of Quizbusters, a new occasional podcast series from Quizbeard. Those of you who listen to the weekly quiz will know that I regularly put out a call for subjects for quiz rounds and, so far, the response to this has been nothing short of amazing.
The problem is – many of the suggested rounds are about very specific or niche subjects, which makes them difficult to use in a general knowledge quiz. For example, it would be okay to have a round on TV shows of the 2010s as there’s a broad range of trivia underneath that banner, but it’s a bit unfair to have an entire round based on a single TV programme, like I did early on with Game of Thrones; not everyone has seen it and so they’re at an immediate disadvantage in terms of scoring.
That’s where Quizbusters comes in – like I say, it’s going to be an occasional release; maybe once a week, maybe twice or not at all – whenever I get the time really! But, it will be unashamedly specific in its subject matter and, more than likely, focussed on media topics: individual movies, TV programmes, books, comics, and the like, but I might delve into some other categories from time-to-time: different, perhaps underrepresented sports and pastimes or academic subjects. If it’s a topic you’re familiar with, you can expect a short, sharp quiz of 10 questions focussed solely on that subject to test your knowledge – if you know nothing about it, feel free to skip that episode and dive into another – or get in touch via the website to suggest your own: there’s virtually nothing too outlandish or niche to be covered.
That being said – if I’m planning to release a Quizbusters, I’ll try to give you fair warning on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter at least a few days in advance so you can cram for the test. Today’s Quizbusters is on the topic of the 1985 film Back to The Future. If you’ve never seen it, stream it now or grab a DVD from a charity shop because – let’s face it – without that you’re not going to have much of a chance.

With a working title of ‘Quizbeard’s Black Spot Challenge’, I'm working on a new weekly show, which will be different because it will feature interaction with a CONTESTANT. You can see where this is heading.
Recorded over a Zoom call and released as an audio podcast, each contestant will face three rounds of five questions:
Total possible score: 30 points.
The ‘Mystery Envelope’ round will be five questions on a subject topic, selected at the time from a choice of three by the contestant. The ‘Black Spot’ round will be five prepared questions on a subject of the contestant’s prior choosing (think Mastermind’s specialist subject).
I’d like to record a fair few of these before pulling the trigger and releasing for download, so if anyone would like to take the Black Spot Challenge (or whatever it ends up being called) as a contestant, please register your interest by visiting quizbeard.com/blackspot

Everything is explained at the website, which can be found at Quizbeard.com, including an archive of all previous quizzes, links to social media, contact information and the quiz kit, where you can print out blank answer sheets and black spot cards for your own use.
If you’d like to nominate a subject to be covered in the quiz, please get in touch and I’ll give you a mention. Welcome back to another 25 question trivia quiz in Quizbeard number five. This is the second episode in a very strange first week of quarantine and isolation as we all shelter indoors. The method remains the same – those 25 questions can be spun into 30 points by players using their Black Spot card, which you can pin to any of the five subject rounds, just as long as you declare it before the first question of that round has been asked. Doing so will grant you double points for each correct answer given in that round only.
Four quizzes in and I’ve yet to hear of anyone claiming to have scored the full 30 points, but that could all change today with all the practice you’ve been having recently. You can let me know how you get on in today’s quiz by visiting me on facebook, Instagram, twitter or youtube – all of which are linked from the Quizbeard website at Quizbeard.com. A special thank you to those at the Isolation Station group who held a virtual online meetup via Facebook Live to play quiz number four last night – I gather a good time was had by all, and it was great to see people getting together online to play games.
Today’s quiz is the same format as always – 25 questions over five subject rounds but, don’t forget, there are 30 points available as you can play your Black Spot card on any nominated round before the first question of that round is asked, allowing you to earn double points on those five answers.
Please remember to visit the website at quizbeard.com and to like and subscribe to the podcast where available. You can now also listen to back-episodes of the quiz on YouTube and links are on the website now, along with links to all the other usual social media channels.

General Knowledge, Science, Ireland, Animated Films, US Presidents – they’re the subjects in this week’s quiz, so get your Black Spots ready for Quizbeard number 3.
Hello all and welcome back for Quizbeard number three. Apologies for the quality of today's recording – I’m well and truly stuffed-up this week, but have tried to speak as clearly as I can. I have no doubt that many of you are listening to this in a state of self-isolation while the dreaded Coronavirus runs the whole world ragged, so I hope everyone’s keeping as safe and healthy as possible. We’ve been holed-up indoors for the entire week and I know it’s a very strange time for everyone.

General Knowledge, Geography, TV & Film, Missing Members and Celebrity Daisy Chains – they’re the rounds on today’s quiz, so have your Black Spots at the ready for Quizbeard no.2.
Welcome to the second episode of Quizbeard, the weekly trivia quiz podcast with 25 questions spread over five subject rounds. As usual, there are 30 points available when you earn double points by playing your Black Spot card before the start of any round. You might notice I’ve changed things up a little this week and given the round titles out at the start of the show so that you have more time to decide which round you might prefer to play your Black Spot in. This is thanks largely to listener feedback I’ve had from Quiz no 1 and I want to thank everybody who’s reached out and commented on that – I do appreciate the support. Reports indicate that the average score in last week’s quiz was around 16 or 17 out of 30, so I was a bit worried that the questions might be verging on the difficult side, but most people I’ve spoken to seem to think that they represented a good cross-section of trivia, so expect roughly the same standard from now on.
Quizbeard has now been picked up by Apple and Google podcasts, as well as Stitcher, Spotify and some others, so you should be able to subscribe via your favourite podcast app by now. Please feel free to leave a review on iTunes or whatever it’s calling itself these days and send me a message through the Facebook page, twitter or Instagram feeds. At some point this week, I’ll also be uploading the first two quizzes to YouTube, so you’ll also be able to catch it there. All links are, of course on the website a Quizbeard.com and you can stream the quiz directly from there if you prefer.

Welcome to the first edition of Quizbeard, a weekly trivia podcast quiz consisting of twenty-five questions and answers across five subject rounds. It’s very simple to play – I’ll read out the questions and you can answer in your head, on paper or out loud with others, or however else you like. If you’d like to play in competition against friends or family, you can download a quiz kit from our website, Quizbeard.com, which contains a printable PDF answer sheet with room for twenty-five answers.
You can score double points for any one of the five rounds by playing what’s known as your ‘Black Spot’ card, and this again is simple to do: after you hear the title of any one round, you have until the first question is asked to declare that you’d like to play the black spot, so you’ve got to be quick! For that round, and for that round only, you can award yourself two points instead of one for any correct answers you give. This can be very useful if the round is a subject you in which you think you might score very well, and means that there are thirty points available across the whole quiz. You can only play the black spot on one round, so choose carefully. For more details, see Quizbeard.com. If you’re playing against others, you can also download, as part of the quiz kit, some printable PDF Black Spot cards to cut out and keep.
