Like You: Mindfulness for Kids: Recent Episodes

Perpetual Motion

Like You is a mindfulness podcast for kids. We use breathing, affirmations, music, and imagination to explore feelings, relieve anxiety, encourage self-esteem, and grow empathy, all while having fun!

Our podcast creates a safe, calming, and relaxing audio experience for children as they learn to find beauty and wonder in themselves and the world. Subscribe to get a new episode every Tuesday.

We created the podcast with kids in mind, but we welcome listeners of any age group, including parents, grandparents, or grown-ups who just want to get more in touch with themselves and their inner-child.

Summer Encore episode! There’s a common bit of sports psychology that tells athletes to visualize themselves making a goal before they take a shot. On this episode I recall learning this lesson on my childhood basketball team, then explain how this advice is similar to saying affirmations.

I hope you'll enjoy this special guest episode from our friends at Storypillar. Storypillar is a podcast for kids and their grownups that tackles the sticky situations kids face while growing up. It features a story-loving caterpillar named Sneak, Sneak’s older sister, a butterfly named Bean, and Meg, a human person who writes and produces the podcast. This guest mini-episode features Bean the butterfly doing a mindful check-in, which she calls a Bean-o-meter check. We all know that mindfulness is about slowing down and paying attention to the things that are happening inside you and around you. So I thought it would be fun for you to hear how Bean checks in with her own feelings. Bean will also say a few affirmations, which listeners of Like You are very familiar with.

Summer Encore: On this episode we'll learn how to use the acronym RAIN to manage our difficult, stormy emotions. Then we'll make our own rainstorm, before finally finding our own rainbow. 🌈

This episode features a process for regulating emotions using the acronym "RAIN," which I've summarized below.

R - Recognize the feeling and give it a name.

A - Allow yourself to feel the feeling.

I - Investigate the feeling with kindness.

N - Not me - because the feeling is not who you are. Feelings come and go but you're always you.

I did not create the RAIN acronym. It is commonly used in practices of mindfulness as a way to regulate difficult emotions. I adapted the acronym to make the N easier to understand for kids - other versions of the acronym usually use "Non-identification," "Not-identify," or occasionally "Natural awareness." They all mean the same thing. If you encounter the acronym elsewhere, you may sometimes see the A as "Accept" or "Acknowledge." Again these are essentially the same, but I chose the word I thought best for kids to grasp. If you want to learn more about the RAIN method, you might want to start here or here.

On this episode We’ll learn to handle our big wild feelings with a technique called name it and tame it.

Parents, "name it to tame it" can be a helpful tool for kids learning to manage difficult emotions, and it can be especially helpful if you apply it in conversations as well. You may be able to identify the name of an emotion more readily than your child. When they tell you about something that happened, you may help by saying things like "it sounds like you are frustrated," "that must have felt scary," "it seems like you feel sad about that." Not only does this help them identify and manage their feelings, it also lets them know that you hear them and understand what they are experiencing.

"Name it to tame it" was coined by author and psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel in his book The Whole-Brain Child. Hear him discuss this idea in this video clip. Read more about the concept here:

S.T.O.P. is a well-known mindfulness exercise using stop as an acronym for managing stress, anxiety, and other difficult feelings.

On this episode we'll learn how to use the acronym RAIN to manage our difficult, stormy emotions. Then we'll make our own rainstorm, before finally finding our own rainbow.

Many listeners tell me their favorite parts of the podcast are the affirmations and the songs, so I thought why not create an episode that is ALL songs and affirmations? Introducing a new song "Deep Breath In" along with old favorites "I Like Me" and "Ice Cream Cone."

This episode features a new song called "Deep Breath In." Want to sing along?

Close your eyes
Clear your mind
Think a thought that fills you up inside

Deep breath in
Long breath out

Breathing in
Fills your chest
Breathing out
Helps you rest

Deep breath in
Long breath out
Think of peace
Think of love
Think of sunlight shining from above

Deep breath in
Long breath out

This is kind of like that, except we get to make wishes!

This is a special encore of one of our favorite episodes. On this episode, we’ll pretend to be flowers, and learn that every flower grows differently. Just like a field of wildflowers, our world is full of so many people who are all beautiful in their own ways. Whatever size, shape, or color you are, you are beautiful just as you are.

Like You is taking a short winter break. New episodes will return on January 5th. In the mean time, I decided to revisit a couple of past episodes. Maybe this will be an old favorite, or maybe it’s one you haven’t heard before.

Like You is listener supported. Learn how you can support the show by becoming a patron on Patreon.

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at hello@likeyoupodcast.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Sometimes something that is loud can also be quiet at other times. Like a musical instrument or a storm... or YOU! After making our previous episode, where we talked about storms, I decided it would be a good idea to talk about one of the things that can make storms so scary: Loud noises. So today's episode is all about quiet and loud.

No one is too young to talk about racism. We don't have all the answers, but we wanted to offer a starting point for learning what you can do about racism whether you are 2 or 10 or 100. After a short discussion about racism, we will hear affirmations from our friend, Mia Saine.

If you are looking for additional resources to discuss race with young children, and engage in solutions, here are some places to start.

Sesame Street/CNN Racism Town Hall
On June 6, CNN and Sesame Street partnered to host a live broadcast on racism. I watched with my 3 and 6 year old and the both found it very engaging. If you missed it, you can find the full town hall online in 3 parts, by clicking the link above.

NYT - Talking to Kids About Racism
One of my favorite children's book author/illustrators (Christian Robinson) and a school counselor, offer advice for talking to kids about racism in the article linked above.

Diversity and Representation on Your Bookshelf
Stories are a great way to engage young minds. There are a number of good resources for finding books by and about communities of color. Here are a few:

  • Here Wee Read
  • The Brown Bookshelf
  • Inclusive Storytime

A Kids Book About Racism
This book by Jelani Memory is meant to serve as a launching point for generating conversation between adults and kids. A Kids Book About also has a series of books about other topics that can be difficult to begin a discussion about.

Anti-racism resources for white people
This Google Doc has been widely shared on social media, and features a long list of resources.

Where to Give
If you are looking for places to donate to organizations that support black children and/or educate & empower young people on race and justice, click above for a recent instagram post where we highlight a few organizations.
