A recent viral comedy sketch struck a nerve, not because it was outrageous, but because it felt familiar. It exposed a tension many people already feel: the gap between the Jesus they read about in Scripture and the church they often experience in real life. In 1 John 3, the apostle John names this tension with startling clarity. He takes us back to one of the Bible’s oldest stories, the story of Cain and Abel, and shows us that Cain is more than a villain. Cain is a pattern. A way of thinking. A way of organizing the world around fear, rivalry, and exclusion. John warns us plainly: the way of Cain always leads to death, death in relationships, death in communities, and death within us. But he also offers hope. “We know that we have passed from death to life,” John says, “because we love one another.” This message is an honest, pastoral look at what love really is, and what it isn’t. Not sentimental or performative, but costly, healing, and outward-facing. A love that lifts people up instead of shoving them down. A love that refuses to answer fear with force or hatred with more hatred. In a heavy and painful moment for our world, this sermon invites us to examine the way we are living, the stories we are believing, and the path we are choosing. Because resurrection doesn’t only happen someday, it begins whenever we turn from fear to love. Join us as we listen again to John’s call to choose the way of Christ, and to step again, from death to life. Join us for live worship every Saturday at 9 am and 11:45 am in Grand Terrace. One of the quiet struggles of modern faith is distance. God can feel distant. Truth can feel abstract. Faith can feel like an idea we affirm rather than a life we inhabit. 1 John insists on something radical: The Word of God has come within human reach. On December 20, 2025, our service was led by Pastoral Reflections on The Unlikely Hope of Christmas. When you stop and really listen to the Christmas story, as if for the first time, there is so much that could have gone wrong. An engaged virgin, a decree from Caesar, a journey to Bethlehem, no room in the inn, an angelic announcement, three wise men, and a feeding trough. There were so many seemingly random actions coming together in a Divine Plan for our salvation. We invite you to hear The Story that changes everything as the unlikely miracle of hope that it was. Truly, a gift from God!

When storms hit, when the diagnosis comes, the job falls through, or relationships strain, it’s easy to wonder if God is punishing us. But the story in Matthew 14 shows us something different: Jesus sent His disciples into the storm, not to harm them, but to meet them there. What looked like chaos became a moment of divine encounter. This past Sabbath, Pastor Daniel continued our Unshakable series with a message titled “Unshakable Peace: Not Punishment, Proximity.” Together, our congregation discover that peace is not the calm after the storm, but the nearness of Christ within it.

This sabbath, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by having a guest speaker, Dr. Johnny Ramirez-Johnson, professor of Anthropology in the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary, share about how Hispanic theology speaks powerfully into our collective hope—the return of Christ and the resurrection of the dead all through delving into Mark 12:18-27.
Hispanic theology output focuses on the Second Coming and how death's ultimate remedy will be resurrection. Today's sermon places death as an event on the road. Death is not the end! We will meditate on the road of death and resurrection.

Political violence and division are shaking our nation. Families are grieving, communities are fractured, and many are asking: Where is God in the midst of so much death and despair? In Luke 7, Jesus meets a grieving widow at the gate of her city. With a word, He stops the funeral and restores life where there was only loss. Pastor Daniel concluded our series "Alive Again: Compassion Resurrects," exploring the third and final time Luke uses the word “compassion," when Jesus Himself shows up. Discover how His compassion still breaks into our broken world, and how it calls us to live with the kind of love that changes everything!

What if compassion is more than kindness? What if it’s powerful enough to raise the dead?
This Sabbath, Pastor Daniel Xisto began a new two-part series exploring the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. These familiar stories hide an unfamiliar truth: every time Luke uses the word compassion, someone who is “as good as dead” comes alive again.
We discovered how compassion isn’t just a feeling — it’s resurrection power. And it might just change the way you live this week.
We’ve come to the final section of the Sermon on the Mount. Here, Jesus pivots and gives three powerful illustrations that bring us to the most consequential teaching in His entire message. This Sabbath, Pastor Sabina unfolded Christ’s final invitation—an invitation that was urgent then and remains just as urgent now. Did you know chronic worry shrinks your brain’s ability to plan and connect… but trust in loving relationships can begin to reverse it?
We all worry — about bills, bodies, relationships, and the future. But what if Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-34, “Do not worry about your life…”, were not just a spiritual ideal, but a radical invitation to freedom?
This Sabbath, we explored what neuroscience reveals about how worry rewires your brain and body, why Jesus challenges the deepest assumptions of our anxious culture, and how the Kingdom of God gives us a new center of trust, joy, and purpose as we become a community of peace in a world of fear.
It’s more than just “don’t worry”—it’s a call to reclaim your mind and your mission!

Jesus’ words in this message called the Sermon on the Mount challenged the disciples to live the ways of God right where they were. The same is true today. These words show us what it truly means to pursue the ways of God in this world we live in. This is not an easy calling. There is deep, inner work required. This Sabbath we reflect on Jesus' words in Matthew 6:5-18 —words that move us towards a deep, hidden life characterized by prayer and fasting.

This presentation and open discussion was led by Dr. Nicholas Miller, Seminary professor and religious liberty attorney. Together, we explored how Revelation 13 speaks to current political realities—from Christian nationalism and the rule of law to immigration, ICE, and recent Supreme Court decisions.

“Love your enemies.” It’s one of Jesus’ most quoted commands—and one of His most misunderstood and difficult. What did Jesus really mean when He said it? Does loving our enemies mean staying silent in the face of harm? Pretending everything is okay? Agreeing with people who’ve wounded us?
This Sabbath at Azure Hills, in a message titled "The Bridge Between Us," Pastor Daniel takes us deeper into Matthew 5:43–48, where Jesus calls us to a love that breaks boundaries—a love that refuses to play favorites, a love that isn’t soft but strong, not passive but deeply intentional. Together, we’ll name the false assumptions that keep us from this kind of radical love—and explore how to love the way Jesus loves. Be ready to be challenged. Be ready to see love in a new light. Because when we love like this… we show the world what God is like.

Jesus’ disciples had an idea of what God’s Kingdom, i.e. "the good life" would be like. But it wasn’t same picture Jesus revealed in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’ words in this message challenged them, showing what it means to truly live pursuing the heart of God. This Sabbath we reflect on Jesus' words in Matthew 5:33-42—words that inspire us to have congruence between what’s in our heart and what’s lived out in our life. Jesus takes us beyond the surface, moving us to a deep life of integrity, with love as our motivation.
This Sabbath, Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a message entitled: "The Narrow Way: On Keeping our Word and Getting Even."
What makes something right or wrong? Is it the rule of law? Is it an authority? In Matthew 5:21-32, Jesus talks about what fulfilling the law looks like. He goes to the heart of two very prominent commandments, “you shall not murder,” and “you shall not commit adultery.” And he introduces each one by saying, “You have heard… And then he says, ”But I tell you…!”
Pastor Mike Leno will explore what Jesus says about the law and why he says it. The implications, he notes, are astounding and directly relate to our everyday lives.
The word “true” describes something accurate, constant, and unchanging. In geography, "True North" points directly to the geographic North Pole — the fixed point at the top of the Earth’s axis. Unlike magnetic north, which shifts about 30 miles each year, "True North" stays steady. It’s a reliable guide — and knowing where it is can mean the difference between arriving at your destination or getting lost.
During our VBS week, we taught the kids that Jesus is our True North — the one trustworthy guide for life. He’s the constant we can look to when everything around us feels confusing or unstable. But an honest question still remains — one many of us ask: “Can a God who allows the world to get so wild… really be trusted?”
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus paints a picture of what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God —not a kingdom of violence or domination, but one of hope, marked by mercy, justice, and humble power.
We will reflect on Jesus' words from Matthew 5:17-20—words that inspire us to believe in Jesus as the fulfillment of who we were made to be, and that invite us to hold onto hope for what matters most. Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a message entitled: "The Narrow Way: Fulfillment."
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus paints a picture of what it means to be part of His kingdom—not a kingdom of violence or domination, but a subversive one that is marked by mercy, justice, and humble power. This Sabbath we reflect on His words from Matthew 5:13–16—words that call us to be salt and light. These are not just poetic metaphors. They are a summons. A mission. A sacred calling. Pastor Gabriel Morales will preach a message entitled: "The Narrow Way: Salt and Light."
Pastor Daniel kicks off Azure Hills’ summer series "The Narrow Way" with Matthew 5:1–12—Jesus’ most iconic and subversive teaching. Though it spans just three chapters (Matthew 5–7), the Sermon on the Mount completely redefines what it means to live a good life. What if blessing doesn’t look like success? What if the kingdom belongs not to the strong but to the poor in spirit? In a world chasing power, applause, and performance, Jesus offers something radically different. He invites us into the narrow way—not a rigid or rule-heavy path, but the Jesus way—a way marked by mercy, honesty, courage, justice, and deep trust in a God who draws near to the broken.
We are excited to have Dr. Gilbert Valentine as our guest speaker!
Dr. Valentine is a respected Adventist scholar and educator who, even in retirement, continues to teach occasionally at the H.M.S. Richards Divinity School at La Sierra University in California.
Originally from New Zealand, Dr. Valentine has served the Adventist Church in pastoral ministry, youth leadership, and higher education around the world—including in Pakistan, England, Thailand, Australia, and his home country.
He is widely recognized for his work in Adventist history and Ellen White studies. His writings include several major biographies and books exploring the development of Adventist thought, leadership, and prophetic identity. His forthcoming biography of theologian Edward Heppenstall is expected to be released by Pacific Press this summer.
Dr. Valentine is also a beloved member of our Azure Hills Church family. He and his wife, Dr. Kendra Haloviak Valentine, live in Riverside, where he enjoys cycling through the citrus groves near their home.
The title of Dr. Valentine's message this is “Beware the Travel Brochure." Here's a preview: "Sometimes our experience at a destination does not match what the glossy travel brochures promised. What do we do when that reflects our experience in the church? The assurance that Jesus is the builder of the church assures us that though the development process might at times be messy and uncomfortable, the community being built is strong. Jesus is an experienced builder. What can we learn from Jesus' confidence in the future of the church?" - Dr. Gilbert Valentine
This week’s message walks us through Daniel chapter 6—but not just as a story about lions and deliverance. We’ll uncover how this ancient story points directly to Jesus, the One who was consumed so that we could be saved. We’ll also reflect on how unjust systems—then and now—target those who seek peace, justice, and truth. In a world full of modern-day lion’s dens, we are reminded: "our God is still mighty to save."
For our Diversity Sabbath this year, we're honored to have Dr. Jonathan Park, president of our Southeastern California Conference, as our guest speaker!
Elder Park was born in Korea and came to the United States when he was young. He has always wanted to be a pastor, and God has graciously made his dream come true. He is married to Ashley, has three children, and knows he is very blessed. He currently serves in the role of the President of the Southeastern California Conference. He has had the privilege of serving as a local church pastor for several churches for the past 30+ years.
His sermon is entitled, "Highest Calling."
“The fulfillment of the highest calling experience depends on who you look at.” - Dr. Jonathan Park
Pastor Sabina Vieira will share the message entitled “Naming God: The Legacy of Encounter,” where she will explore the powerful story of an unexpected mother who will challenge the ways we think about legacy and discipleship.
Elder Caleb VinCross preached a sermon titled, "Neither!, the best bad news we need to hear today." You are invited into the presence of God, a place where all belong.
Caleb VinCross is a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, educator, and board certified healthcare chaplain. Caleb has a passion for creating space for people to learn, grow, and authentically express their thoughts and feelings. Caleb joins his wife Tara, son Josiah, and daughter Ava on their many adventures in ministry and beyond. He currently serves veterans and their families, focusing on providing support for severe mental illness, substance use, grief, and moral injury.
Jesus resurrects and doesn’t immediately ascend; He stays with His disciples for a few weeks longer. John 21 is a reminder that good things don’t have to be rushed. It’s a story that reveals the pathway to forgiveness and is an invitation to participate in the healing of a fractured world.
Pastor Gabriel Morales will share a sermon called, “The Breakfast Club.”
Final words have weight and meaning. The Scriptures share the final words of Jesus, poignant words spoken from the cross.
“Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”
“Amen, I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise”
“Woman, behold, your son….Behold, your mother.”
“I thirst.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
“It is finished.”
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
Before we move into celebrating the resurrection, together we meditate on these sacred words. The Azure Hills Pastoral Staff will share short messages on the last words of Jesus. We invite you to take in the depth of the love and sacrifice of Jesus. John 10:18 says, "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”
Revelation testifies that death and suffering, pain and sadness will not always be a part of our story. The Sabbath is a gift now, and a reminder of this hope that is to come. We rest in God’s grace, we cease from our labors, we embrace a subversive way of life, and we feast in God’s presence. Living in Sabbath rhythm gives structured time for joy and reminds us of all that is to come. For six days we do, we work, we create, we build… The seventh day, we remember the joy of the Lord and how we will spend eternity.
Pastor Tara VinCross will conclude our sermon series, "Sabbath, a Pathway of Grace," Part 4: “Feasting.”
What if the Sabbath was never meant to be just a day off work—but a way of life? A way to remember who we are, who God is, and what truly matters. This Sabbath, we’ll explore how God’s gift of rest not only renews our souls but empowers us to resist the pressures of Pharaohs—both past and present. Sabbath is a calling we are asked to embrace!
Pastor Daniel Xisto will continue the sermon series, Sabbath, a Pathway of Grace, Part 3: “Sabbath as Resistance."
For six days we do, we work, we create, we build… at times, we worry. The seventh day, we cease. We rest. We reflect. We embrace a different way of life. We feast, and as we do remember our hope for the future. The Sabbath is a sign of our dependence on the grace of God in our lives. By living in Sabbath rhythm, we choose to live a life of trust, walking on the pathway of grace.
Pastor Tara VinCross continues the sermon series, Sabbath, a Pathway of Grace, Part 2: “Resting."
“For this nation living on the edge, there is an ancient prophecy about America we can no longer forget or ignore. That it has Jesus’ fingerprints all over it makes its news both good and urgent. American Apocalypse—Counting Down is an invitation to follow the One we can count on. Especially now.”- Dr. Dwight Nelson
We welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Dwight Nelson. He is joining us for three presentations. The theme: “American Apocalypse: Counting Down.”

Our Adventurers and Pathfinders are leading in our worship at Azure Hills Church. In spoken word and music, scripture and prayer, our kids and youth will be blessing all ages!
At our 9am service, Adventurers will lead our worship. The sermon will be presented by: Danilyn Mason, Liam Davis, David Fargo, Eliana Ntim, and Ali Knapp.
God gives grace extravagantly. He saves the undeserving and gives blessings to both the just and the unjust. It is by God’s grace that we enjoy the blessings of this church--our community of faith. Life in the kingdom of grace—it’s more than any of us deserve!
Not everyone, however, is happy about God’s extravagance. Why waste the resources of heaven on those who don’t appreciate it? Why risk offending the faithful by rewarding those who don’t do their part? Jesus told a parable about jealous workers who asked those kinds of questions. Pastor
Mike Leno will explore the meaning of Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16). Does the message of that parable apply to us today? Let’s find out together.
On average, people live around 27,000 days. As many know, some get more time, some less. In addition to time, each person is given talents and resources, all three in different proportions. Still, each person is given something to share with the world. Stewardship is caring for what has been entrusted to you. Firstfruits, tithe, and offering were all invitations to grow a spirit of generosity in us. The question is, what will you do with what has been entrusted to your care?
Pastor Tara VinCross will share a sermon called, “You’re a Piece of Work.” We invite you to worship, experiencing the renewal found in the presence of God.
We welcome our guest speaker, La Sierra University President, Dr. Christon Arthur! Prior to coming to Andrews University, Arthur served as an associate professor of Educational Administration and Associate Dean of the College of Education, at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. He is married to Carmelita, and they have one adult son, Christon Arthur Jr.
We welcome our guest speaker, Pastor Alfonzo Greene III! He was born in Berrien Springs, Michigan and is a product of Christian education. He is a graduate of Oakwood University, in Huntsville, AL where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theology. He also has a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry in Missional Church Leadership from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.

Pastor Greene is happily married to his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Okike, also a graduate of Oakwood University. Their marriage began on July 4, 2004 and they have added five beautiful children to their union: Chimere, Alfonzo Joseph (AJ), Ikenna, Caleb, and Shiloh. His greatest desire is that his life will bring glory to God.
“What if your greatest breakthrough is on the other side of your biggest limitation? In “It’s Time to Stretch,” we’ll see how Jesus called a man with a withered hand to step beyond his comfort zone and into healing by faith. Don’t hold back—God is ready to stretch you into new possibilities!” - Pastor Alfonzo Greene III
"Moving is rarely an enjoyable task. Managing boxes, deciding what will fit in a new space, and letting go of things—and people—you hold dear can be both physically exhausting and emotionally challenging. In our walk with God, we often face a similar challenge—an invitation to make space for something greater. But that’s not always easy. So, how do we create room for Him?
Join us this Sabbath as we explore Luke 5:27-33 and discover the powerful and sometimes unexpected blessings of living a journey that makes room for God. I will share personal insights from my own journey, revealing how this process can be both difficult and transformative." -Pastor Sabina Vieira
Start the New Year with Purpose! Pastor Daniel Xisto will kick off the new year by exploring how we can bring hope and love to a world that desperately needs it. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus reminds us that we are meant to be a positive force in our communities—illuminating the path for others through our compassion.
As we step into 2025, let’s reflect on what it means to live with purpose, to make a difference, and to embody the values of kindness, justice, and care for those around us.
This message will encourage and challenge you to step boldly into the year ahead with faith and love as your foundation. Let’s begin this journey together!
God will not let go of creation - precious human beings made in God's image. Even though we sinned, scorned, and rejected Him, He chose to enter into this world, and made our planet Earth a place visited by the God of all the universe. God settles the cosmic conflict through the strength of God's love for us - and an invitation to commune with God. The greatest gift God gives us is the light of communion with God.
Pastor Tara VinCross will share a sermon called, “The Light of Communion.”
Christmas carols invite us to sing of love and freedom, peace and adoration. That’s what we all want, isn’t it? Freedom from the worry, guilt, fear, and terror that seem to press in upon us. The opportunity to bow down in praise to the One who is with us, whose light dawns in all of our hearts. We can hardly imagine it, yet Jesus promises to be the Source of this light and peace for each one of us.
Our Pastoral Team will share reflections on their favorite Christmas Carols, hymns that lift our hearts in worship. From our hearts to yours, together let us focus on the Light of the World, our Emmanuel. Let’s recapture the wonder of worshipping our God.
Every year at this time Azure Hills presents a musical worship celebration of Jesus’ birth. The theme this Sabbath is, “The Light of Christmas.” We will hear music performed by the Cherub Choir, the Children’s Choir, Gospel Choir, Chorale, Ladies’ Chorus, Orchestra, the Youth, the Indonesian Male Chorus, and pianists Joel and Justin Oswari. Don Charboneau, Lisa Davidson, and Caleb VinCross will narrate, and Pastor Tara VinCross will present a message. The program will conclude with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, for which the audience will be invited to join.
Advent is preparation for Christmas; anticipation, not celebration. There is a work being done in the secret place. Emmanuel, knit together in human flesh in the hidden place of the womb.
The darkness has always been a space where God works in might and power, creativity and creation. The space where God brings forth something new.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. -Genesis 1:2
The people living in darkness have seen a great light…a light has dawned. - Matthew 4:16
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Gift of Darkness and Light.
Gratefulness Sabbath is a time of testifying of God's blessings, lifting our voices in praise, and celebrating our mission projects.
What if the moments of your deepest pain are the very places where Jesus draws closest? As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, and we prepare to gather around tables with family and friends to share meals and stories, this Sabbath we’ll explore a sacred encounter Jesus had ‘at the table’. In Luke 24:13-32, two heartbroken followers of Jesus discover hope and healing in His presence. Come and experience how Jesus transformed their sorrow into joy—and how He can do the same for you!
The enemy tries to intimidate. At times you feel weak, powerless, vulnerable. Yet the truth is, you are not alone. That doesn’t mean we always feel the strength that we have. Poet Elisabeth Elliot writes that, "Sometimes fear does not subside and one must choose to do it afraid.” This is courage. The Word of God and prayer are two powerful weapons that God has given us to take up courageously in the fight. As we seek God, God fills us with courage to believe the Word of God spoken over our lives, families, and communities.
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, "The Sword of the Spirit and the Power of Prayer - The Armor of God," pt. 7.
Join us as Azure Hills Church celebrates 60 years of ministry on January 17-19! Here’s a special message from our senior pastor, Pastor Tara VinCross, sharing a glimpse of the joy and inspiration awaiting us during this milestone weekend. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
"Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." -Ephesians 6:17, NIV.
In warfare, the helmet and the sword were the last two pieces of armor picked up by the soldier. After fastening the rest of the armor on, the helmet, which was hot and uncomfortable, would be placed on just before heading off, protecting the soldier in battle.
Often the believer’s battle with the enemy takes place in the mind. The helmet of salvation protects us, giving us safety and assurance as we fight. Salvation is more than something off in the future, it affects our lives today.
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Helmet of Salvation - The Armor of God, pt. 6.
The most frequently used word in this section on the armor of God is stand. The Scripture even compels us, put on the full armor of God so that "you may be able to stand your ground,” then it for emphasis, "and after you have done everything, to stand.”
The enemy works to throw off our faith, using other people and situations to cause us to stumble. We are flooded with discouragement, temptation, and even numbness. But we aren’t meant to do this alone. We see in this study of the shield of faith this truth: we stand strongest in our faith when we stand together.
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Shield of Faith - The Armor of God, pt. 5. In this message we learn again how essential community is in the journey of faith.
I’m wondering, what is throwing off your peace this week? Have you faced difficulties, stresses, or relational struggles that have caused you to fear? Life is not easy. We must wear the right footwear for the journey.
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace - The Armor of God, pt. 4. With shoes fastened in readiness of the gospel of peace, you don’t have to worry about losing your footing. You can move out through tough terrain, knowing your peace will hold, firm and secure.
Every day you’re a part of a spiritual battle.
Ephesians 6:12 says, “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood…” Yes, the struggle is real. This is how it is here on this earth, yet in this struggle, God has provided everything we need for protection. The Breastplate of Righteousness, held by the belt of truth, provides vital covering. Come and find out more about how we can put on this protection and live differently as a result.
Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Breastplate of Righteousness - The Armor of God, pt. 3. This word will leave us all singing a song of hope, filled with deep gratitude for our Savior Jesus!
One of the devil's favorite weapons is lies.
He distorts the truth, and makes it hard for us to see things as they really are. Yet, as we stand in God’s armor, we are surrounded by the belt of truth. God gives us discernment and wisdom to know the Truth. As we know and live in the truth, we are set free. Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, The Belt of Truth - The Armor of God, pt. 2.
Ephesians 6:12 says, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world...” The very next verse says, "therefore put on the full armor of God…" There is a battle going on. Are we living in awareness of this battle?
This fall, we begin a new series on the Armor of God. We look to the One who stood firm under enemy attack and overcame. Jesus, the One who fought for our salvation and stood strong under pressure. Together, we remember that because of our union with Jesus we too, can stand. We are clothed in his armor, protected by his power, strengthened by his service, and enabled by the Holy Spirit. Pastor Tara VinCross will offer a message titled, Stand in the Armor of God, pt. 1.
We're excited to welcome our guest speaker Pastor Raewyn Orlich! She serves as associate pastor for discipleship and nurture at the La Sierra University Church.
In her book, “In Grandpa’s Shoes: An Invitation to Intergenerational Connection,” she shares how her grandfather, Eric Webster (pastor and ultra-marathon runner) helped inspire her ministry and provides reflection questions for small groups. She and her physician-poet husband, Michael, are raising three members of Generation Alpha: Eleanor, Eric, and Desmond.
"What's your favorite song, the song you would most like to share with people from different generations? Why is it important to you? This Sabbath we look at an ancient Hebrew song, Psalm 145, that was used to teach the faith, exploring what it says is the most important to share." - Pastor Orlich
We have come to the end of the story of the book of Mark and here we find the greatest miracle of all. We remember that in our own lives, “Healing and redemption are all about allowing, receiving, and creating space for the Wonder-Worker to move… We don’t make the miracle,” says Arianne Braithwaite Lehn.
Braithwaite Lehn goes on to say, “And when we’re still in the place of the broken, sad, hard thing, the one promise we can know for sure is… God’s not done.” This is the promise we can hold to in our own lives, for those we care about, and for our world.
Pastor Tara VinCross will share a message titled “The Greatest Miracle.”
Life if full of highs and lows. There’s no escaping it. As Kahlil Gibran says,
"Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?"
We look upon the One who experienced the depths of human joy and sorrow. Pastor Tara VinCross will share a message titled “Sweetness and Suffering.”
At the end of Mark 13, Jesus says "Watch!" and our natural instinct is to think that it's external; that what we need to watch for is something that we see. But what if it's an internal matter? What if the crux of what Jesus was describing was inward? Join in as we unpack from the topic "Watch, In."
We are excited to welcome our guest speaker, Elder Will Penick, to Azure Hills. He is the Ministerial Director at the Southeastern California Conference (SECC). Will loves Jesus and is blessed to serve our pastors in SECC. He has a passion to share the gospel in a divisive public space and encourages the church in growing as disciples, not just members. The New Testament scholar for everyone, NT Wright, spelled out the human predicament. “God has always wanted us; the question is do we want God?” We have a choice to hold onto the vineyard we protect or the answers we already have or be open to the new possibilities that are found in Christ. -Elder Will Penick Ministerial Director, SECC
Pastor Daniel Xisto, our new administrative pastor, shares his first message with our church family where he will invite us to explore the triumphant entry of Jesus in Mark 11. We will consider the crowd’s cry of "Hosanna!" We'll delve into the deep significance of this moment, understanding how it reflects our own hopes today. Prepare to reflect on what it truly means to welcome Jesus into our lives with the same joy and anticipation that greeted Him all those years ago!
What keeps people out of the Kingdom of God? Mistakes? Pride? Continual sinning? No, there are plenty of examples in Jesus’ ministry of people who did all of those things and more but were forgiven and accepted into the kingdom. Jesus did, however, point out certain people that would have a hard time entering the kingdom of heaven. And when he did that, the disciples, in amazement and disbelief said, “Who then can be saved?”
According to Jesus, part of the problem is our human tendency to compare and compete with each other. We think there has to be a pecking order. Surely someone has to be greatest in the kingdom! But what if Jesus’ criterion for who is in the kingdom makes us uneasy? It certainly made the disciples uneasy.
Pastor Mike Leno explores the stories of Jesus blessing the children and turning away the Rich Young Ruler. In these stories Jesus tells us what sort of kingdom he is offering, and how we can get in on it. With God, all things are possible.
In Mark 9, we find a father who is desperate to get help for his son. He prays a prayer that we’ve all prayed, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Because our belief is imperfect we cry out for help. But that cry comes from a place of belief in our good and sovereign God. Faith starts by simply turning toward Jesus. Elder Keturah Reed will share the message, "Imperfect Faith."
In Mark 8, Jesus heals a blind man in Bethsaida. Though Jesus had touched Him once, his eyesight was not fully restored until Jesus touched him a second time. Mark 8 invites us to be dissatisfied with superficial discipleship, and to receive a deeper transformation through the uprooting of our long held assumptions, and by embracing the way of Jesus.
What good did it do for Jesus to walk on water? What good did it do to feed 5000 (or 10k+) people? Those amazing miracles didn’t seem to change anything in Jerusalem, or Rome, ...or Washington!
Pastor Mike Leno continues the pastors’ sermon series on Mark with “Miracles and Misunderstandings.” This message probes the very human tendency to misunderstand Jesus’ message about his kingdom. Lest we think the Jewish leaders or even Jesus’ followers were the problem, let’s consider our own kingdom goals. What kind of Messiah are we looking for? Are we ready to follow? Or do we want to modify Jesus to match our expectations?
In Mark 7, we continue to follow the Miracles of God as Jesus encounters a man who is both deaf and mute. Imagine the man's confusion, consider his thoughts as friends ushered him over to a stranger, someone he'd never heard of...yet would change his life forever. In this text, we learn about what it means to be a community of miracles, and our response to the Gospel once we've witnessed one! Pastor Linda Biswas will share the message, "Is This Mic On?"
We humans too easily, too quickly find ourselves in situations so low we can’t get out; so overwhelming we are hopeless. Three stories in Mark 5 clearly demonstrate Jesus is more than able to overcome evil. Nothing is too hard for him. He is here to take us back to community. He will come to take us home. At our 9am and 11:45am worship services, Pastor Steve McHan will share a message titled "Leaving Points of No Return."
This week we celebrate the culmination of Vacation Bible School. Our theme this year is Scuba: Diving into Deep Friendship with God! Each day, the kids have focused on a different aspect of friendship with God. As we continue in our series on the book of Mark, we look at a story that takes place on the sea, and a time when Jesus’ disciples learned that their friendship with Jesus can bring them deep peace. Pastor Tara VinCross will share a message titled “Diving into Deep Peace."
Jesus was out of control! People thought it was great that he healed people and even cast out demons. But to many, he was reckless in the way he went about his work. He offended influential people. Even his family thought he was a little crazy at times. They decided that if Jesus was going to succeed, he would need some supervision before he blew it completely. Certainly he needed advice before rashly forgiving sins in front of the Pharisees, letting his disciples eat out on the Sabbath, or doing unnecessary healings on the Sabbath.
Pastor Mike Leno presents a challenging message titled, “Taking Charge of Jesus.” We will then celebrate communion as a sign that we follow the real Jesus, the one who died and rose again—and the one who loved the whole world, not just our little corner of it.
In Mark 2, Jesus forgives and heals a paralyzed man. In this encounter, we find that the power of friendship can carry us through trying times. We also learn that Jesus isn’t interested in a superficial healing that only affects the body, but a deep transformation that binds the fractured soul. Pastor Gabriel Morales will share the message, "Forgiveness and Healing."
Mark opens the gospel in the most moving way, with the words the beginning of the good news. In Jesus Christ, we orient ourselves to what is true and good. We hold space for beauty and safety, hope and love. Some days, some weeks, it’s a fight to stay rooted and connected to the goodness of God. As Gabor Mate, Hungarian-Canadian physician says, "Safety is not the absence of threat; it is the presence of connection.” Pastor Tara VinCross will share the message, The Beginning of the Good News.
Is there a secret for success in the Kingdom of God? Can you do something truly great for his kingdom? Can you, figuratively speaking, hit a home run for God’s team?
James and John had an advantage, possibly a secret to success. They knew the Messiah, quite well, they thought. So they they figured they had an inside track to greatness. They were about to hit a home run. They would be the GOAT (greatest of all time)! Jesus seems to spoil their plans, however, when he tells them, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
What did Jesus mean by that? People who aspire to greatness don’t volunteer to be slaves. So, is it impossible to do something great for God? Perhaps, like the disciples, we need to find out what Jesus meant and what the kingdom of God is all about.
Watch as Pastor Mike Leno presents a message entitled, “A Home Run for the Kingdom,” based on Matthew 20:25-28.
Diversity is a beautiful thing. But it is also hard. We need to understand why we celebrate it, because experiencing it can often lead to a fear of displacement. The whole book of Romans is about handling diversity (between Jew and Gentile, but also many other kinds of diversity). Romans 9-11 tackles the Jew/Gentile problem, climaxing in Chapter 12 (One Body, many parts) and Chapter 14-15 (Therefore don’t judge each other). Paul ends the book with greetings to (and from) a wide diversity of people in Chap 16. But before Paul plunges into all this, in chapter 8:14-39 (the focus of this week's sermon), he gives us four powerful reasons why nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. We may fear being displaced, disoriented or dislodged by incoming diversity and change—but Paul assures us that no matter what we cannot be dislodged from God’s heart.
What can we learn from a destitute widow, a mother who could no longer provide for her son? Her willingness to follow an outlandish request led to God's miracle of provision.
We are God’s handiwork is what Ephesians 2 tells us. But what does that actually mean? Pastor George Tuyu will unpack what that means and so much more in his sermon entitled: “God Prepares, We Practice.”
What do I do now? Will I get through this? Perhaps you have recently asked yourself similar questions. When faced with life’s challenges and crises, it may feel as though you’re permanently besieged. Maybe you have the sense that you have run out of options; the walls are closing in and there does not seem to be an escape route in sight. Amid everything, God invites his beloved children to flourish in their faith experience. Join us as we journey through a biblical story of survival. May God reveal to his beloved that survival and salvation are available.

Living in the reality of the resurrection can be challenging. Thomas’ story teaches us that sometimes the most faithful disciples wrestle with unbelief, and that inner turmoil sticks around despite being surrounded by witnesses to the Risen Messiah. Nevertheless, Jesus meets us where we are and gives us exactly what we need to he restored; He gives us Himself!
Do you ever have a hard time talking about money? Of course, we all do at times. I suspect even Jesus had a hard time with that topic, depending on who his audience was. The poor loved it. The wealthy Pharisees, not so much!
One of Jesus' most difficult parables has to do with money—the story of the unfaithful steward in Luke 16. It’s a parable that at first glance seems hard to decipher. But in the context of the Messiah’s message of love, compassion, and justice for everyone, it’s quite easy to understand.
So did it help for Jesus to tell the story? The Pharisees sneered at him afterward, so we know that at least part of his audience was not impressed. But how do we react to Jesus’ teaching? We need to talk about that.
"Darkness Will Not Overcome" is a 4-part series that will inspire, challenge, and empower you. In the book of John, the writer gives 7 signs to not only prove that Jesus is the Son of God, but of the miracle God wants to perform in your life. We will unlock the symbols and signs in the Bible that answer life's biggest questions and will give you hope for the future.
Words spoken to others matter. Final words especially have weight and meaning. The Scriptures share the final words of Jesus, poignant words from the cross.
“Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”
“Amen, I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise”
“Woman, behold, your son….Behold, your mother.”
“I thirst.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
“It is finished.”
Before we jump into celebrating the resurrection, we move together to meditate on these sacred words. The Azure Hills Pastoral Staff will share short messages on the last words of Jesus. We invite you to take in the depth of the love and sacrifice of Jesus. John 10:18 says, "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”

Dr. Delroy A. Brooks will share a message titled “Blessings of the Kingdom.” Pastor Brooks serves as youth, young adult and children’s pastor for the Kansas Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church in Riverside, CA. Dr. Brooks is happily married to his wife, Dr. Dilys Brooks, Campus Chaplain at Loma Linda University. Their union has produced two blessings, their legacy, Micah and Matea. He is an author, blogger, podcaster, avid cultural critic, comic book and sci-fi reader, music enthusiast, and sports fan.
Pastor Tara VinCross will share the message, A Call to Healing, the fifth part in the Deep Calling series, exploring eight calls of God. The call to healing is a call to honesty and transparency. It’s an invitation to begin where you are, not where you wish you were. It’s an invitation to a process of trusting the work of the Holy Spirit over time.
Jesus lived and worked in a hostile environment. From the beginning of his teaching career to his death on a cross he faced unrelenting criticism, subtle micro aggressions, and blatant threats on his life. Even though his kingdom was about love and not about political power or popularity, many felt threatened. And threatened people often say and do extreme things, even violent things. How do we live and work in a world like that?
How can the peaceful principles of the Kingdom survive in the face of such hostility? How can we defend our faith in a way that is constructive and helpful?
We will discover the way Jesus answered those questions. Pastor Mike Leno will speak on “Following Jesus in a Hostile Environment,” based on the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:33–48.
Pastor Tara VinCross shared the message, "A Call to Community," the fourth part in the Deep Calling series, exploring eight calls of God. The entire Christian life is meant to be done in community. As the people of God ‘do life’ together, the connection and care and compassion exhibited in the body of Christ is the greatest witness to the love of Jesus in the world. We need each other.
Pastor Baron Anthony Sovory will share the message entitled: "Strengthen My Hands." Rebuilding what was once torn down can be challenging. It may even feel discouraging, and some may try to prevent the progress. However, when we unite with a shared goal and mission, there are no limits to what can be accomplished. Lord, strengthen our hands to carry out your kingdom's work on earth as we prepare for our heavenly kingdom.
Pastor Tara VinCross will share the message, A Call to Rest, the third part in the Deep Calling series exploring eight calls of God. Are you tired? Worn out? Needing rest? The stresses of life are real. What God wants us to realize is that the life of a disciple of Jesus is a life of surrender, which leads to rest.
Church bulletin bloopers can be good for laughs. A simple typo can be deadly in the case of this blooper: “Ushers will eat latecomers.” Or, in another case, could cause some disappointment and missed expectations: "Evening massage – 6 p.m.
Communication can be tricky, to be sure. But communication matters, with both people and God. How do we practice prayer in our lives? What does it look like to make space to reach out to God in prayer?
Pastor Tara VinCross will share the message, “A Call to Prayer,” the second part in the Deep Calling series exploring the eight calls of God.
James K. A. Smith said, "You can’t think your way into new habits. New habits can only emerge as you practice them.” This is so difficult for us! Perhaps because practicing new habits is so routine, so ordinary. We want something bigger, and dare I say flashier, to bring us into deeper relationship with God, others, and our purpose in the world. Yet, God is doing a slow work of transformation in each of us, at times imperceptible to us.
Pastor Tara VinCross will begin a new series called, “Deep Calling,” that explores the eight calls of God, our response to grace. This week, a Call to Devotion. Come and Worship. We hope to see you here!
How do we stay on message when the world pulls us in so many directions? How do we know which message to listen to when there are so many voices trying to get our attention? Is this just a matter of making a New Year’s resolution to be a better Christian? Pastor Mike Leno will explain how Jesus stayed on message in spite of the pressures of the world and the loud voices of his opposition.
While it’s fun to get new things for Christmas, all our stuff soon gets outdated. Truth be known, what many of us really want is a new beginning. In tomorrow’s message, Dr. Erik Carter would like to share lessons from the life of Jacob about how all of us can begin anew in 2024.
"The great challenge left to us is to cut through all the glitz and glam of the season that has grown increasingly secular and commercial, and be reminded of the beauty of the One who is Christmas."- Bill Crowder

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life." 1 John 1:1 Margaret Philbrick, author of Back to the Manger, shares that seeing Christmas through the eyes of her children opened her eyes to the wonder and fullness of God. She writes, “I’m learning that the key to experiencing Advent with the wonder of a child is found in seeing Jesus.”
Our Pastors will share what Christmas is in the Bible and through the lens of our own experience. Christmas is… Peace, Compassion, Generosity, Love, Fulfillment, and Immanuel.
From our hearts to yours, together let us focus on the Word of Life, our Immanuel. Let’s recapture the wonder found in seeing and worshipping our God.
Jesus is not a king who reigns with iron power, but One who reigns by compassion and mercy. He is the King of kings! A different kind of King than the world had ever seen.
We turn our attention to King Jesus, the Light of the World -- a God who is truly with us.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. Isaiah 9:2
We can relate to the people of God at the time of Isaiah the prophet: oppression and darkness seem to rule the day. For them, and for us, a light dawns. Hope rises because of Jesus.
Pastor Tara VinCross will turn our attention to the Light of the World, Jesus Christ.
Brené Brown said, “What separates privilege from entitlement is gratitude.”
Every year, we pause as a community for gratitude, in our annual Gratitude and Missions Sabbath. We recognize that we give because we have received from the lavish love of God (1 John 3).
Paul says in Ephesians 5:20 to "Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We take the time to hear stories, see pictures, and reflect on our own lives, rejoicing in the goodness of God. For “every good and perfect gift comes from above” (James 1:17).

It’s irrational to buy a lottery ticket. Yet millions do, even more when the prize gets huge. According to Seth Godin, the odds of winning the $1.6 billion MegaMillions lottery are minuscule. You’re 400 times more likely to be hit by lightening. He points out that for some people, paying for the ticket is a bargain because it offers them something important than winning: hope.
It’s true, we all need hope to survive. Where can true hope be found?
Pastor Tara VinCross will speak from the apostle Paul’s own lived experience about Hope in Christ, a hope that is lasting and does not depend on circumstances.
What are you grateful for? We are invited to remember.

Lieutenant Commander Tom Smith, Chaplain, US Navy (retired) will be our speaker this Veterans Day Sabbath. Chaplain Smith has been in pastoral ministry for 45+ years; 12 as a pastor, 20 as a Navy Chaplain and 15 years serving as the Chief of Chaplains at the Loma Linda VA. He is the husband of Sue Smith, the father of four children and five grandchildren and also a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
Veterans Day is one of two federal holidays set aside to honor men and women who have at some point served in the Armed Forces of the United States. There are over 18,000,000 alive representing 7% of our population who fall into this category. Service to ones country is a reminder of a greater service on behalf of a greater kingdom ... the kingdom of Heaven. We who embrace the gift of God’s love are called to follow in the steps of the One who came NOT to be served but to serve. "The greatest among us are the ones who serve.” This is our privilege and our calling.

Lawrence Kutner said, "Children learn and remember at least as much from the context of the classroom as from the content of the coursework.” This holds true for the letter written to the church in Laodicea. The context matters just as much as the content of the message.
Pastor Tara VinCross concludes our sermon series in the Book of Revelation, taking us deeper into the most talked about church, the letter to the church in Laodicea.
How does Jesus come to the people in Laodicea? What does Jesus see in the people? What does Jesus promise them? As you read this letter in Revelation 3:14-22, we see a striking image of Christ knocking at a closed door, asking to come inside. How will we respond?

What does it mean to be rich? You might immediately point to the things that we possess. What we own and the stuff we manage. Yet, being rich is about so much more. A rich life is about opportunities… open doors… real connection. These are the unshakable things that hold in the chaotic earthquakes and eruptions of life.

How many of the things that you do really matter? The message to the church in Sardis is not an easy one. As we dig into the history of this city, we hear God’s wake up call for believers then and now to pay attention to what will last. Are you alive or dead? God’s invitation is to freedom, purity, and victory. What a beautiful invitation it is! What will we answer?
The feel of someone's hand in yours, a back rub from your spouse, a warm hug from an old friend, a high-five from a teammate, a reassuring touch from a member of your small group--in whatever form it takes, a welcome touch feels good and often brings us healing. But why? This Sabbath, discover how giving and receiving meaningful touch can increase your overall health and well-being, and remind you what it means to be like Jesus.
We use words to encourage and affirm. We use words to criticize and diminish. We use words to communicate approval or disapproval, delight or disappointment. We use words to express heartfelt appreciation. Each one of our relationships--personal or professional--hinges on the words we say. Join us this Sabbath morning as we listen to and learn from a very wise man who has a lot to say about what we say and how we say it. Words really do matter.
We are experiencing a crisis of discipleship in our churches because we’ve prioritized baptisms over spiritual transformations and productions over connections; we’ve reduced the Gospel to an information-transference, and we’ve emphasized doing things for Jesus and His teachings, yet we’ve neglected His friendship and the way He’d invited us to live. We invite you to look again at Jesus’ last command in Matthew 28:16-20 and consider together what it means to be disciple-making disciples. We love seeing you here!
Pastor Tara VinCross continues in our sermon series in the Book of Revelation, taking us deeper into the letter to the church in Thyatira.
It’s easy for us to forget to factor in evil. We go about our lives day-by-day, and miss the fact that there is an enemy who is distracting you from the things of God. This letter helps us to see the evil around us and to focus on a picture of our God, especially seen in quotes from Psalms and the book of Daniel. This insignificant church, compared to Pergamum and Ephesus, is promised the greatest reward of all. A precious promise for all of us today.

Our society has more time saving devices than ever, yet they’re commonly used to fill our time -- every single second. Hopefully you cherish sitting still and being in the company of others, or yourself, or God. Or do you struggle to even sit, feeling more comfortable moving or accomplishing? What would happen if you actually sat still … to breathe … think … listen ... be present … and be God’s? Jesus calls us to be still and know that He is God. He offers more contentment than our achievements, more peace than our vacations, more joy than our entertainment, and more richness of life than our schedules. This Sabbath, examine hurry-sickness. Explore holy stillness. Experience life as something not to be achieved, but received from Jesus, when we sit still and let Him be God in us.

The truth of living is that it’s not always easy to see where and how God is at work in our lives. On the cross Jesus cried out, quoting the first line of Psalm 22, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Was this an admission of defeat? Was God really abandoning him?
One of the most profound elements of the gospel is that Jesus won by losing. He gained victory by being defeated. But what difference does that make for us?
We will consider Jesus’ use of Psalm 22 and ask some tough questions. What difference does Jesus make in the world, in our church, and in our lives? And how can Jesus give meaning and victory, even when we feel defeated?

Did David have a bad week? Psalm 69:3 in Today’s English Version reads, "I am worn out from calling for help, and my throat is aching. I have strained my eyes, looking for your help.” Did David have a good week? He continues in verse 30, "I will praise God with a song; I will proclaim his greatness by giving him thanks.” This Sabbath we are reminded that wherever we find ourselves on life’s continuum, we can end the day with praise.

Taste and See that the Lord Is Good! What do you do when you feel like the walls are closing in and you have nowhere to turn? That was David’s experience. He had saved the king’s life and reputation multiple times. Yet, he was still hunted, an outcast, a man without a country. He couldn’t fight for his country. He wouldn’t fight against his country. And he knew he couldn’t run any longer. It was enough to drive a person crazy—which, for David, seemed to be the only option. What can we learn from David’s experience? When everything in life goes sideways, how can we taste and see that the Lord is good?

This Psalm shifts from trial, to deliverance, to impending trial, all declared or sung in the community of believers. Both praise and lament belong in the Christian community. But is that what we expect to find in church? Hearing authentic, vulnerable stories about challenges God delivered us from and first-hand experiences of trials we have not yet made it through. What if what allows us to make it through the hardships of this life is God working through the community? What if the solid rock under our feet is not only Christ the Rock, but the firm foundation of others who believe with us in God’s deliverance?
We are invited to gain courage and hope from the praises we hear on the lips of those around us in the gathered community.

Are you growing a garden this summer? Or even a tomato growing in a pot on your doorstep? It takes work! Dirt, plus water equals soil. Soil plus seed equals life. We want to cut out parts of the process or oversimplify. Yet we don’t get life (ie the taste of a juicy tomato) without dirt or tears or seeds.
Daniel knew this from personal experience. The fruit of God’s Spirit grew in his life as he demonstrated courage in captivity. Right in the midst of the challenge, God turned his tears into songs of joy, his seeds into full-grown sheaves. This is the story our kids have been focusing on all week during Vacation Bible School, and the story that will shape our reading of the Psalm. We will discover, like Daniel, that through it all, our God is growing good things in our lives.
Pastor Tara VinCross will preach the next sermon titled, “Dirt, Seeds, and Tears” in the series Keep a Song in Your Heart: the Psalms of Summer.
Have you ever been in a hard place? Feeling like the “enemies” against you are multiplying? That there is no way out? Wondering if God is listening to you? David is in that place. He is fleeing. He’s on the run from his own son. This journey shapes the language of this lament-turned-psalm-of-praise. Even before David knows how things will end, he can’t hold back his adoration. Fear often leads us to places, some, very unhelpful. David reminds us that the real antidote to fear that we experience is God’s Presence. This weekend, we kick off our Summer sermon series on the book of Psalms. I invite you to join me in reading Psalm 27 and glean how we can best deal with fear by leaning on the everlasting arms of God.

What’s your mental picture of Jesus? A huge smile? Eyes sparkling with joy? A skip to his step? Perhaps it’s not what you usually picture. Many have a more stern mental image than this, however the scriptures testify that though the mission of Jesus was a serious one, our Jesus experienced joy. As we live as image bearers of God, following after our Jesus, we are called to experience lasting joy.
Pastor Tara VinCross will preach the second sermon in the series Being Human: living imago dei on the theme of Joy. You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we worship our Jesus.
What does it look like to be content in the presence of God? Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross!
We begin our new 5-part sermon series entitled, "Being human: living imago dei,” with Pastor Tara VinCross!
To be human is to experience emotions. Compassion, joy, sadness, anger, and fear are all part of what it means to be human. But sometimes we can feel inconvenienced by emotions, or even consider these reactions “unchristian.” What if, instead of pushing emotions away, God calls us to understand our emotions, allowing them to inform how we live as followers of Jesus? Together we will explore what it means to live as image bearers, living into the full experience of being human, like Jesus did.
We may not always see it, but the goodness of God pursues us! Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross!
Often in our experience, when shame is not acknowledged, it leads us to think very badly of ourselves. But the Bible tells us that God interceded and became shame for us, not just for the hope of eternal life, but also for the complete restoration and healing of our brokenness to Him.
Pastor Gatra invites all of us to discover afresh the inexhaustible grace that God brings into our most vulnerable moments.
“Show me your glory!” Let this be our prayer as we start our week! Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross!
Have you noticed? The entire landscape is coming alive around us! The sustained downpours have nourished grass and wildflowers. We now see buds opening in the bright sunlight, snow on the mountains, and birds filling the skies with song. The hills are truly alive with praise!
On this Earth Day, we turn our attention to the handiwork of God, the Lord of all creation who fashioned and sustains us all. God who calls creation “good” and “very good,” invites us to open our eyes to see all that is around us. We recall the words of Ellen White who said, "The beauty that clothes the earth is a token of God's love. We may behold it in the everlasting hills, in the lofty trees, in the opening buds and the delicate flowers. All speak to us of God.” [PP 48.3]
Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a sermon titled, “For the Beauty of the Earth." You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we stand in awe and wonder at the beauty of our God.

In Matthew 15:21-28, Jesus encounters a woman who is desperate, helpless, hopeless. Much like the challenging situations we face, we aren’t given the ‘why's’ for why she's facing what she’s facing. What we do know is that when she comes to God, God doesn’t respond in the way we would expect. What do we do when we aren’t hearing from God? What does thriving look like when it seems all we are hearing from God is silence?Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a sermon titled, “Crumbs,” from Matthew 15:21-28. You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we discover what this means for our lives today.
Have you ever felt torn between a part of you which wants to "Thrive," and another part of you that just wants to maintain the mundane of comfort and control? Have you ever wanted to excel and exceed in your goals but there is a part of you that seems "stuck," and holds you back? Let's learn how Paul wrestled with his "parts" and his solution found in the book of Romans.

God’s power is made perfect in weakness. What does that mean? Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross.
We never know the impact our words and actions can have on others. Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross!
Even things that are meant to bring people together, can end up bringing more distance and discord. Yet Jesus said, “they will know you are my disciples by how you love each other.” (John 13:34-35). This is easier to read, and harder to live out.
Pastor Tara VinCross explores what it looks like to have unity in our diversity. You will see that love is the essential ingredient to thrive.
Following the examples of Moses and the Israelites, how do we thrive in 2023? Dr. Brooks reminded us to: "Remember your own story, make room for other people's stories, and then together sing those songs that give you courage and strength."
What does God require of us? Let’s turn to the Word to find out! Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross.

In our doubts, our fears and all the challenges life brings, we can rest assured that our God is with us. Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross.
Every good routine begins in our minds. We think it’s in the gear we have or the space we have created or what we have around us - and that all matters. But the decision starts in our mind and the way we think about it. Spending time with God, good eating, working out, healthy relationships, and other habits that make for life abundant, all start in our mind. Join Pastor Tara VinCross as we progress in our Thrive sermon series, noticing the invitation in the scriptures to have a strong mind. The good news is, God not only invites us, but gives us the necessary strength to fortify our minds!
It is by grace that we've been saved, not by works. Grace covers our lives. Take a moment to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross and breathe deeply of this grace!
We continue with our new sermon series - Thrive: wholistic, wholehearted health. This is what we are here for, the heart of this calling we are a part of. For us to thrive, we give ourselves to God and join God in what matters most. On Saturday, January 21, we celebrate our 58th Anniversary as a Church, and Pastor Tara VinCross shares a message in our Thrive series - “The Heart of the Mission.”
Whatever you are facing today, God says, “I will provide a way out for you.” Take a minute to thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross!
Dr. Hans Diehl, Clinical Professor of Preventive Medicine at Loma Linda University, School of Medicine, and presenter of the You-Turn Seminar presented a messaged entitled, "MAD, SAD, GLAD: The Gospel of 2nd Chance." It's the story of the Prodigal Father--exceedingly generous, recklessly wasteful and lavishly abounding with His love.
You are God’s masterpiece! On this Martin Luther King Day, how is God calling you to serve? How can you make a difference?
On Saturday, we launched a new sermon series to kickoff the year of 2023. Thrive: wholistic, wholehearted health. Often, our experience of rest occurs only in what follows after exhaustion. But Jesus invites all to experience the true rest in Him. As we celebrate the first Sabbath of the New Year this weekend, I invite us to glean into Luke 10:38-42 and rediscover how we can experience the rest that is found in God’s Presence.
Take a Minute to Thrive with Pastor Tara VinCross! The Lord is our shepherd; we can trust Him.
Do you need a minute of breathing space? Pastor Tara VinCross has a message for you! You are God’s beloved! Let this truth cover you today!
Once upon a time, God called the wisest man in all the world to save His people from the Egyptians. Solomon. Wait, no…that’s not right. Once upon a time God called the strongest man in all the world to save His people from the Egyptians. Sampson. Wait...that's still not right. Surley God called the smartest or bravest, wealthiest or most well-spoken person to lead the nation of Israel out of slavery to be a testimony of God's faithfulness. So he called...Moses? This week we take a break from our regular sermon series as we take a moment to ponder on our call to be disciples. As we take a look at Moses, I wonder a few things: Where have our feet taken us this year? Where have we been asked to go...and more importantly, did we listen? As we celebrate the final Sabbath of 2022, what will your spiritual resolution for this year be?Will we Go...and tell everyone about the greatness of God to all the cities around us?The streets. The person next door? Take a look at the story of Moses this week; think to the time when Jesus asked him to "Go" for him.
"Do not be afraid." These words show up repeatedly in the Christmas story.
To Elizabeth and Zechariah: Do not be afraid of being disappointed again. To Mary: Do not be afraid of your part in the story of God’s redemption. To Joseph: Do not be afraid of other people’s judgment. To the Shepherds: Do not be afraid, you get to tell the story of salvation!
Join Pastor Tara VinCross as we remind ourselves of the good news of God that quiets our fears.
Our pastoral team invited everyone home for Christmas! They reflected on the mess during our children's story, presence, delight, discomfort, celebration, contentment, and family in this joyous but sometimes challenging season.
This Sabbath we experienced a collective journey through gratitude. We invite you to reflect on a moment where God has been faithful and a scripture that fills your heart with praise and gratitude. Our scripture focus together is found in Proverbs 18:20, "from the fruit of their mouths people's stomachs are filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied."
Dr. Haffner's sermon is entitled, Keeping Venden's Voice Alive. Here's a preview: Pastor Morris Venden as his son Lee says, “Had one string on his violin, Jesus,” and oh how beautifully he played that string. Join us this Sabbath at Azure Hills SDA Church as we listen to that song. Jesus. Only. Always. Dr. Haffner has served as senior pastor of the Kettering SDA Church and the Walla Walla University Church, and as Mission Strategist for Kettering Health. He is an award-winning author of thirteen books such as No Experience Necessary, Are you more spiritual than a 5 th-grader?, Destiny: Who you are and what you’re here to do, and The Cure for Soul Fatigue. He has also written hundreds of articles for a variety of journals.
Every so often I get the opportunity to bowl. Earlier this year was one such opportunity, as our pastoral staff took some time to have fun together. I ended up people watching, looking to our left at the people bowling next to us. One person was very good. Another was not. I overheard the instruction that the one gave to the other. “You have to let go of the ball. You have to trust.” You have to trust.
This is life, isn’t it? It’s hard for us to trust. We worry and hold onto things. Paul speaks directly to this difficulty in this letter to the Philippians. He invites us to rejoice, pray, petition, and thank God, right in the middle of our own struggles!
We welcome Dr. Andrea King as our guest speaker. Dr. King has pastored for over 20 years in the Southeastern California Conference and is currently serving as Director of Communication and Media for SECC. She has worked in communications and media for over 25 years and has authored two books: Finding Christ and The Queen in Me. Her sermon entitled, "Day of Opportunity." Here's a preview: "The Bible tells us to make the most of every opportunity, but often we don’t know how. This week, we will learn how to transform our obstacles into opportunities. And with God’s help, we will stand as overcomers." -Dr. Andrea King
Albert Schweitzer said, “There are only three ways to teach a child. The first is by example, the second is by example, the third is by example.”
The Apostle Paul agrees. Follow my example as I follow Christ. But some will try to lead you away. What does this look like in our day-in, day-out life?
Pastor Tara VinCross preached a sermon titled, “Example” from Philippians 3:17-21. You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we discover what this means for our lives today.
Your focus is one of your greatest strengths. Really. This superpower of attention is the design of our Creator, who gave us the ability to press on and push through situations, seasons, and stressors that may at first feel impossible. This is where Paul finds himself as he writes this letter. He affirms that he consciously chooses to “press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” Perhaps you’re finding yourself needing to ‘press on’ in a particular area of your life? Perhaps you need a dose of encouragement, strength, and hope?
Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a sermon titled, “The Prize” from Philippians 3:12-16. You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we discover what this means for our lives today.
I still remember in my younger years, sitting in a friend’s kitchen and watching lemonade pour over the sides of my glass onto her table. She had asked me to say when to stop and I hadn’t said anything. It is possible to have too much of a good thing. The Bible speaks about being weighed and measured. It is easy to fixate on whether we will have too much or too little when the time for accountability comes. Today, we ask, "How much more?" whether about money, health, righteousness or hard times. God’s word answers with good news.
Where are your feet planted? What do you place your confidence in? According to Paul, this question is of supreme importance. You’re invited to engage with God and this scripture, as we discover what this means for our lives today.
Paul emphasizes in Philippians and elsewhere that righteousness comes by faith, not by works. We’ve heard that message and we’ve taught it for a long time. But do we know what it means? Do we know what it means to live by faith, not just in theory but in real life.
Pastor Mike Leno explores the meaning of Paul’s teaching on faith and righteousness in Philippians 3:1-11. It’s not just good advice. It’s good news!
We live in a world where the default motto is, "Every man for himself.” Consciously or subconsciously, it’s easy to fall into a life focused on our needs and the needs of those closest to us. What Paul says in Philippians 2:21, could be affirmed today: “For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.”
It’s a rare gift when you see something other than this. Yet, we find ourselves longing for something different. Selfless love is the calling of every believer. A call modeled by Paul, Timothy, and the lesser-known disciple, Epaphroditus.
Pastor Tara VinCross' sermon is titled, “The Interests of Christ,” from Philippians 2:19-30. You’re invited to engage with God, this scripture, and one another as we discover what this means for our lives today.
This section of Philippians draws on the history of the people of Israel and points the current people of God to a hope-filled future. Using metaphors of work and sports, perspective and team work, the people of God are called to lift up their eyes and see their higher calling: shine like stars! What does this look like in our lives, as we now “work out our salvation” in the every day?

What does it mean to really live life to the full? To show up with love, free from regrets, living to our potential. The words of scripture in the letter to the Philippians talk about where we find this kind of life, and the Way might just surprise us. It’s not what we think. It all starts with having the attitude of Christ.

It’s no secret we are divided. In our politics, religion, and life experience, just to name a few lines that divide us. Many of us are aware of this. “Tell me something new,” you might say. The words of scripture in the letter to the Philippians speaks to this reality.
We continue in our new sermon series with Pastor Tara VinCross with a sermon titled, “Together.” We will explore the section of this letter from Philippians 1:27 - 2:4. With pressure inside and outside the church, what do we do?

Have you ever made a discovery completely by accident? Liked a food you never imagined you would. Enjoyed a hobby that surprised you. Found meaning in something you never expected you could. Sometimes things that end up being the best, are not what we would have first chosen. We continue in our new sermon series with Pastor Tara VinCross in the book of Philippians with a sermon titled, “Greater Purpose.” We will explore the section of this letter from Philippians 1:12-19.

We're in a new sermon series with Pastor Tara VinCross in the book of Philippians. The first sermon in this series is, “Partners in the Gospel.” We ask ourselves questions like, What do we remember and focus on in our lives, the joy or the challenges? How do we know God is at work in us? Is Christianity a solo or team endeavor? Listen in as we go deeper together in the Word of God and discover what it means for our lives today.
This past weekend we closed out our Summer Sermon Series with the final fruit of the Spirit, self-control. Most of us view self-control like that overdue dentist appointment - it’s necessary but dreaded. It has such a bad reputation, yet it’s a foundational character trait that other virtues like joy, gratitude, and generosity rely upon. While we tend to think of self-control as a strictly human enterprise, Scripture tells us self-control is a product of being connected to God. Let’s unpack more of what this means together.
For most of us, when we think of the Fruits of the Spirit we get excited about the outcome of what we can do with that gift! Love...who doesn't love love!! Joy. Check! Peace? Yes, we need more peace! Patience? Bring it on! Kindness, generosity, faithfulness...yes, yes, and yes! But Gentleness? Isn't gentleness a weakness? In today's society with a pandemic, international factions, and dropping attendance...isn't gentleness just a crutch? Let's talk about what it is!!
We'll take a closer look at John chapter 8 for clues on gentleness.
Our speaker is Joseph Amaya, our new media specialist. He will continue our Fruit of the Spirit sermon series with his sermon titled, “Abounding in Love and Faithfulness.”
Elder Will Penick is our guest speaker. He is the Associate Ministerial Director at the Southeastern California Conference and will continue our Fruit of the Spirit sermon series with his sermon titled Goodness.
I love cultivating fruit and vegetable plants for harvest. God’s Holy Spirit has an infinitely better gift with the fruit shared in Galatians 5:22-23. In this 5th installment of our series, we get to see the powerful difference we make when we cultivate kindness. Proper attention makes this fruit sweeter, stronger and more powerful.

"She/He has the patience of a saint!" Have you heard this familiar saying? Chances are your heart like mine can drop into your feet just thinking about being as patient as a saint! But Godly patience may be something different than what you imagine! Join Pastor Starla in exploring the virtue of patience in our ongoing Fruit of the Spirit series this summer, and be encouraged!
This Sabbath we continued our summer sermon series on the "Fruit of the Spirit," with a message on the subject of peace. Based on Paul's letter addressed to the churches of Galatia, there is an enemy who wants to sabotage the peace you have through Jesus Christ. In this message, Dr. Erik Carter would like to expose this enemy and the primary means employed to wreak havoc on your soul. His hope is to equip you with the truth so you can reclaim the fruit of the spirit known as peace.
It’s been a MONUMENTAL week at Azure Hills Church as 600+ kids and youth, plus parents and volunteers experienced God’s love in BIG ways. Pastor Tara VinCross shares a sermon titled, “Joy!," the next in our Fruitful summer sermon series. Come find out how joy is like a powerful flashlight that you need in your life. Read Galatians 5:22-26 and Psalm 105 in preparation. A great end to a fantastic week. You won’t want to miss it!
This Sabbath we pushed pause on our summer sermon series for an Old Testament interlude. Dr. Erik Carter shared a message entitled, “A Dispatch from the Darkness." Have you ever felt discouraged, defeated, or disillusioned? Then we especially invite you to pray and reflect on 1 Sam 22:1-2, as we draw practical lessons from an unusual season in King David’s life story—a time when he lived in a cave called Adullam.
As a church, we believe in our collective calling to love. But how do we stay in love, or what’s more, grow in love? Pastor Laia Amaya will share a message titled, “It Takes Faith To Love,” as we begin our sermon series, “Fruitful,” on the fruits of the spirit. Come join us as we go deeper together in the word of God and see what it means for our lives today. Bible Verse: Romans 5:8
On Sabbath, June 11, Pastor Tara VinCross shared a message entitled, “Sacred Trust,” from a section of Paul’s letter where he instructs Timothy saying, “Guard what has been entrusted to your care” (1 Tim 6:20). What do we do with what we’ve been given? How do we live in such a way that recognizes that all that we have and all that we are is only by the grace of God? Come join us as we go deeper together in the word of God and see what it means for our lives today.
When I compare these three verbs, they each make me feel differently: spend, share, give. I’m interested in your perspective: •. What I spend is gone - although I may receive great reward in return. I love spending time with my grandchildren.
•. What I share has mutual benefit - although I may prefer that you share your pie with me rather than I share my pie with you.
•. What I give I allow someone else to control - although when God has control, He works everything for good - including my offerings.
This week’s sermon passage in 1 Timothy 6:6-19 reminds us that life’s inevitable uncertainties can protect our priorities when we experience them though our heavenly Father’s perspective.

On Sabbath, May 28, Pastor Tara VinCross shared a message entitled, "Not ‘Yours,' Not ‘Mine,' But ‘Ours.'" We continue in our sermon series Re[Build]: God's Promises, A Sure Foundation. In this final sermon in our series on the book of Ezra, we witness firsthand how the exiled people of God are not only restoring a building but a relationship with God. You are invited to pray and reflect on Ezra 9 and 10 in preparation for the message. Come join us as we go deeper together in the word of God and see what it means for our lives today.
There is power in beginning again. The people of God worked hard to build the altar and lay the foundation. Then for 16 years, the work ceased. How will the people of God come back from this ‘false start’? How will the work of God begin again? We notice as we read that God does not rebuild the temple. God does not supernaturally do the work for the people. Instead, God raises up people to accomplish the will of God in some surprising ways.
This Sabbath, we continue in our sermon series Re[Build]: God's Promises, A Sure Foundation. In this series on the book of Ezra, we witness firsthand how the exiled people of God find their way. We see this week that it’s never too late to start again. Pastor Tara VinCross shared a message entitled, “Living Under God’s Faithfulness.” You are invited to pray and reflect on Ezra 5 and 6 in preparation for the message. Join us as we go deeper together in the word of God and see what it means for our lives today.
When we step forward on the path God has called us to, we can expect to encounter opposition and adversity. God has given the people a vision - to rebuild the temple of God. And it won’t come easily. Ezra 4:4 says, "Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building.” In fact, their words not only discouraged but completely halted progress for a time. Yet, in spite of it all, God was at work in the people. This Sabbath, we continue in our sermon series Re[Build]: God's Promises, A Sure Foundation. In this series on the book of Ezra we witness firsthand how the exiled people of God find their way.
On Sabbath, May 14, Pastor Tara VinCross will share a message entitled, “Success Meets Resistance.” You are invited to pray and reflect on Ezra 4 - 5:2 in preparation for the message. Come join us as we go deeper together in the word of God and see what it means for our lives today.
On this Mother’s Day weekend, Pastor Mike Leno, our worship and adult education pastor, reflects on important lessons he learned from his grandmother. Listen in...
It’s not always possible to go back to the way things were. There are events in our life that change us. Sometimes you can’t restore, you must rebuild, setting out on a new path. Is it possible to move forward into new territory without fear? Certainly, the people of God faced immense challenges. This Sabbath, we continue in our new sermon series Re[Build]: God's Promises, A Sure Foundation. In this series, we will journey through the Book of Ezra as the exiled people of God find their way.
On Sabbath, April 30, Pastor Tara VinCross shared the message, “The Struggle with Starting Over.” You are invited to pray and reflect on Ezra 3 in preparation for the message. Come and go deeper together in the word of God and what this means for our lives today.
The people of God in exile. We are probably divided on our experience of this word – exile. For some of us, we don’t really know what that word means. I mean we know what it means, but we don’t know what it really means...to be an exile. And for others of us, we know right away what it is to be on the outside. To have lost our sense of place, of belonging. Some of us have never known what it means to really belong. Have you ever felt like an exile?
This Sabbath, we begin a new sermon series Re[Build]: God's Promises, A Sure Foundation. In this series, we will journey through the Book of Ezra as the exiled people of God finding their way.
On Sabbath, April 23, Pastor Tara VinCross kicked-off this series with a message, “We’re Here, Now What?” You're invited to pray and reflect on Ezra 1 and 2 in preparation for the message. Come and dig deeper together in the word of God and find out what this means for our lives today.
What did Jesus talk about the afternoon of his resurrection? We know he had a conversation with two depressed disciples as they walked the 7 miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Why is that conversation important? And what is our part in that conversation? Join us as we relive that dramatic story told in words and music.
How do you deal with delay? What’s your reaction to waiting? Sure, it’s hard to wait for something you want to have happen or a thing you want to get. But what about something so significant as the coming of Jesus. How are we to live as we wait for the soon coming of our Savior?
On Sabbath, April 9, Pastor Tara VinCross will preach a message, “Waiting for the Lord.” This week you are invited to pray and reflect on Matthew 24:1-14 and 2 Peter 3:8-15 in preparation for the message. Come and dig deeper together in the word of God and what this means for our lives today.
According to 1 Peter, we don’t need to lose faith because of the harsh realities of life. Our future is secure. We will share in the glory of the Chief Shepherd. Because of that, we want to look after God's flock by being an example of faith, even during hard times. If we feel weighed down with responsibilities, suffering, and uncertainty, we can remember that we are secure in Christ. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) Listen in...
On Sabbath, March 26, we will be celebrating communion together, as Pastor Tara VinCross shares part 7 in our sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times? Revelation 12:11 declares, "they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” - our experience of salvation and sharing our story. By looking to Jesus and sharing our story we are strengthened to make it through whatever we are facing. We are journeying deeper together through a letter written by the disciple Peter to a group of exiled believers.
This week we turn to 1 Peter 4:12-19. Here, Peter tells us not to be surprised by trials that come upon us. That judgment is actually good news. That somehow suffering can allow us to more closely identify with Jesus. You are invited to reflect on this section of Scripture and join us as we dig deeper together.
On Sabbath, March 19, the Azure Hills Pastoral Team will be sharing reflections on the I Am Statements of Jesus. Psalm 1:1-6 invites us to meditate on the Word of God, and we know that it is this very word that leads us to the Living Word, Jesus Christ. You are invited to take time in meditation on these scriptures and come Sabbath to experience more deeply who our Jesus is for each one of us. He says to you, for all that you need now or will ever desire, “I am.”

This week we turn to 1 Peter 4:1-11. Peter says the end of all things is near. It certainly feels like that in the world we live in today. Pain and suffering are around us in our community and in the world as a whole. In light of this, Peter goes on to call us to prayer, to deep connection with people, and to doing our part in the world to share grace, all with one aim: to the praise and glory of God! This weeks’ message spurs us on in the race we are running, knowing together we can be overcomers!
Sabbath, February 26 Pastor Tara VinCross shares part 5 in our sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times? This week we turn to 1 Peter 3:1-12. Peter responds to believers living in unjust social systems of his day with specific instructions. The aim is to live a holy life before unbelievers with the hope that your conduct will have a positive impact on them. So how does that happen? What does it look like to live and witness within an unjust system? We will study these instructions to wives, husbands, and all believers, highlighting the key phrase, “in the same way.”
Come, and discover a message written to early Christians that still speaks into our lives today.
Sabbath, February 19, Pastor Tara VinCross shares part 4 in our sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times? Revelation 12:11 declares, "they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” - our experience of salvation and sharing our story. By looking to Jesus and sharing our story we are strengthened to make it to the other side. We are journeying deeper together through a letter written by the disciple Peter to a group of exiled believers.
This week we turn to 1 Peter 2:11-25. In this and next week's message, Peter responds to three unfair social systems of the day: autocratic government, slavery, and male dominance in marriage. What does it look like to live and witness within an unjust system? The question still speaks to us today.
See what it really means that “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps” (1 Peter 2:21)
Sabbath, February 12, Pastor Tara VinCross shares part 3 in our sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times? Revelation 12:11 declares, "they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” - our experience of salvation and sharing our story. By looking to Jesus and sharing our story we are strengthened to make it to the other side. We are journeying deeper together through a letter written by the disciple Peter to a group of exiled believers.
To these believers who are strangers in the land, scattered and suffering, far from the place of their spiritual home, Peter says: "you are being built into a house of living praise to God!” Friends, come and discover that no matter where we are or what our story, we are the priesthood of all believers; one living sanctuary, built to glorify God. For this week: 1 Peter 2:1-10
Sabbath, February 5, Pastor Tara VinCross shares part 2 in our sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times? We are journeying deeper together through a letter written by the disciple Peter to a group of exiled believers.
The section of the letter we are looking at this week is 1 Peter 1:13-25. “Therefore,” Peter declares. Because of your experience of salvation and the “living hope” you have in Jesus, your life is lived differently. Come and discover how this can look in our lives today.
This Sabbath, January 29, Pastor Tara VinCross begins a new sermon series called, “Overcomer.” How are we to make it through hard times now, in this time before Jesus returns? Revelation 12:11 declares, "they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” By looking to Jesus and sharing our story we are strengthened to make it to the other side. Throughout this series we will journey into a deeper understanding of the letter written by Peter to exiled believers. The scripture for today's sermon comes from 1 Peter 1:1-12. Come, find out how you are an overcomer, in and because of Jesus our Savior!
What happens when life throws a curve ball? Do we adjust and hit a home run or do we lose our cool and strike out? This Sabbath God wants to remind us that although things in life change, He is the one thing that is constant. His Grace, His love, His mercy and His faithfulness for you never changes. His faithfulness gives us the confidence to walk boldly into the unknown. Scripture: Psalm 91:4
Do you feel tired? Weary? Burdened down by the week? Perhaps you carry grief, or anxiety, or pain. We’re invited to look to Jesus. To walk next to Him. To learn the rhythms of His grace. To find true rest for our souls. Join Pastor Tara VinCross as we take a deeper look at the famous words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30.
This Sabbath is a special one. In January, 1965 Azure Hills Church worshipped together on its campus for the first time. Today we celebrate 57 years as a church family! God has been so faithful to us! Pastor Tara VinCross shares a message entitled, "Come and See," from John 1:43-51. Just as Philip ran to Nathaniel with the great news about Jesus, others have passed along the news of Jesus to us. And we take the news to others by telling our story.
What food is to the body, Christ must be to us.
"A theoretical knowledge will do us no good. We must feed upon Him, receive Him into the heart, so that His life becomes our life. His love, His grace, must be assimilated" (DA 389,3)
The King of the universe longs for us to commune with Him daily and feast on Him, the Bread of Life. May we never lose our hunger for this bread. John 6:48-51 ESV
