“How can someone think those forces are going to naturally go away, when the body’s most number one important thing…is oxygen,” Dr. Jerry Hu, DDS, AFAAID

Sleep Apnea specialist, Dr. Jerry Hu talks with our AAID Podcast hosts, Dr. Danny Domingue and Dr. Justin Moody about the important check-up every dentist should be incorporating into their practices. Dentists can be one of the first doctors to spot sleep disorders among patients. In fact, most physician’s offices don’t regularly ask their patients about their sleep habits. This can be a fatal mistake.

“As dentists, we can be more empowered to make a difference,” says Hu.

Dr. Hu has obtained his Diplomate status in several sleep disorder associations and is ready to give you all of his knowledge on how you can become more aware of this issue in your patients. You can catch Dr. Hu in person at the AAID Annual Conference October 23 through 26 at the Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

“One of the reasons I got involved in dental implant education is that I didn’t want dentists to get discouraged that they would have failures early on in their implant career and then shy away from doing these procedures,” –Joseph Leonetti, DMD, FAAID, DABOI/ID, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

As an internationally known teacher and mentor in oral surgery and implant dentistry, Dr. Joseph Leonetti, shares his advice to new dentists looking to become involved in the field. With over 25 years of experience placing implants, one of the biggest pieces of advice he gives is to analyze any deficiencies prior to surgery. It’s very common for new dentists to jump right into surgery before properly studying their case. Often times, this can lead to unhappy patients and the feeling of failure.

Throughout this podcast, you’ll have a better grasp of the best technology for a starting dentist, discover hands-on opportunities to learn about implant dentistry, and realize the importance of finding a mentor in your community. Listen in!

“The AAID is an amazing platform that gives you the opportunity to learn both aspects (implant dentistry and prosthodontics) and helps you grow and learn from such great mentors that are always more than willing to clear your doubts, help you with cases, and are always ready to lend a hand when you need it,” Dr. Minaal Verma.

For the first time in AAID history, Dr. Domingue is podcasting with someone internationally…and for good reason. This week’s guest, Dr. Minaal Verma, is one-of-a-kind. Her dental journey began by attending dental school in India, which led to her meeting implant dentistry superstar, Dr. Shankar Iyer at the AAID India MaxiCourse. Dr. Verma realized that prosthodontics and implant dentistry go hand-in-hand so she continued her dental journey by completing dental school a second time at the University of Detroit and then finished prosthodontics school at Rutgers University.

But that isn’t all. Dr. Verma was then introduced to another implant dentistry superstar, Dr. Jaime Lozada, through the rigorous “Advanced Dental Education Program in Implant Dentistry” at Loma Linda University where, together, they conducted and were recognized for their research on Dynamic Navigation.

Listen to this episode to find out where Dr. Verma is headed next, learn about Dynamic Navigation and a breakdown of other technologies, and the best practices to take to become involved in the exciting field of implant dentistry.

“I thought it was a hot topic 10 years ago” – Dr. Erin Elliott

Dr. Erin Elliott, a national speaker and educator on Sleep Apnea, discusses several important facts dentists should know in order to better serve their patients and potentially save lives. According to Dr. Elliott, snoring is not something people should recognize as their “norm.” Yet, 25% of American married couples sleep in separate rooms due to snoring. What’s more, is that dentists can be the first line of defense against Sleep Apnea due to the fact that “oral appliances are effective as first-line therapy in mild to moderate cases.”

Dr. Domingue interviews dental regenerative therapy experts, Drs. Kevin Frawley, Craig Heinen, and Chase White at the Voices of Dentistry conference. This quick-witted quartet revels in past practices of implant dentistry, specifically with IMZ implants, and compares them to the methods of today. They warn young dentists to avoid clutching to the newest, flashiest procedures, and instead, to have a basic comprehension of all the techniques so they “have all the tools in their quiver.”

Because in the end, you can’t beat or cheat biology.

Dentistry is so much deeper than replacing and straightening teeth; it’s about transforming a person’s smile to elevate their confidence level and give them a restored outlook on life. Dr. Darren Brower experienced exactly that during a dental mission trip to Mexico, led by Dr. Domingue’s uncle. The adventure not only changed the lives of the Mexican civilians. “I don’t know how you could not be converted to implant dentistry with those kinds of experiences.” - Dr. Brower

"I am going to be excited to be doing cool digital stuff even if I'm not in a big city for years to come." - Dr. Daniel Smith

Dr. Domingue and this week's guest Dr. Daniel Smith talk about the importance of keeping your practice tech-savvy, and why practicing in a small town should never deter you from striving to be the best. Dr. Smith spent four years on active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, including a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency and a two-year stint as a dental officer aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. During those two years, his ship deployed twice to the North Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
