Since the beginning, the Church was meant to be a community of believers, united under one common banner - Jesus is LORD. Every believer has a story, a background, and a past. However, more importantly each follower of Christ has a future and that future includes other believers. Come Together is a series designed to challenge believers to see that God has united them under Jesus and they are a family that must share the message of Jesus both in word and deed. By focusing on a letter from nearly 2000 years ago, we will look to how the body must Come Together to enlarge God’s kingdom.
The Cross: Where the end is the beginning! If the Cross is the darkest day in all of history, then Sunday morning following that Friday was the brightest. The bodily raising of Jesus from the dead is the linchpin of all Christianity. If Jesus doesn’t raise physically from the dead, then Christianity has nothing to report. There’s simply nothing to speak about at all. However, if the resurrection is true. If the tomb is empty and Jesus lives again then the story is the key to understanding this life. The Cross: A King and a Kingdom: Jesus wasn’t just a random person from the 1st Century who got caught up the fervor of a movement. Kingdom Come: The Heart of the Gospel. From the beginning, the linchpin of the church’s message has been Jesus’ resurrection. If the resurrection of Jesus - specifically the bodily resurrection of Jesus doesn’t occur, then there is no message of which to speak. The bodily resurrection of Jesus is the confirmation of his death as having fulfilled the Scriptures. The Resurrection points to Jesus’ words as true, his purposes and intents as true, and his sacrifice as true. Without the resurrection, no message of Jesus is really worth hearing. But the resurrection of Jesus has ongoing implications. Instead of the death of Jesus being the end of the story, the Resurrection suggests not only a new chapter, but really a new beginning. Most of us can remember big family gatherings or holiday meals with tremendous food. Every climb ends not with the summit, but the descent. It is this journey back to the “earth” that requires much of us. How important is a father? What role does a dad play in the everyday life of a child? When a child grows up, what is the task of a dad then? Don’t forget that a dad is someone’s child as well. The task of being a father can feel daunting and taxing, but the Bible has numerous passages that will point a father in the right direction. The Church was never intended to be simply an organization, a civic group, or even a business. Instead, the Church was to be about the business of the Father while serving the community with the message of hope and peace found in Jesus. The Church was always supposed to bring change and change happens only when the Church understands that she is best portrays Christ when she gives. If any word could truly describe the church it just may be the word Give. Her life is one of giving - to the poor, broken, or forgotten. She is characterized by how she gives of her time and talents to bring glory to God. She will be known for the way she willfully gives of herself in every way. Preparing ourselves for the life’s last enemy can be among the most difficult things we must do. Life’s last enemy is death and it’s our last great showdown. For some the discussion of death is morbid and of little value, for others there can be no discussion without it. However, for each of us it must be a discussion at some point. It requires a great deal of thought and desire to truly look at life and ask, “What’s next.” This week, Pastor Butler concludes the Showdown series as he walks with us through this dialogue by listening to the thoughts of Jesus as He prepared for a death that would end in bringing life to all who will believe. What’s true for you may not be true for me, can’t we just agree to disagree?” This is something we hear all the time about a variety of things. It’s usually said to soften a situation or circumstance so people can just get along in life. However, it’s a much deeper question than we sometimes are willing to answer. Truth should be the answer for action in every showdown, but this will only happen if we know where to find the answer in the first place. It is our job to see the various events and non-events in our lives as training ground preparing us for the Showdown. The LORD has given us a power to overcome, to shine, to proclaim His great favor. With the story of David and Goliath, we find the essence of how we stand firm in the midst of any showdown we face. Showdown: Know Your Heart. We are all faced with different things in our lives that call us out and challenge the very foundation we stand on. We all come to a place where we feel like we must draw a line and stand firm on our convictions against something we feel simply cannot be overlooked. However, while we are willing to take that stand, it must come from somewhere. To hold to a conviction, means to have determined what is important and stand firm when that is challenged. This doesn’t happen out of the blue; rather, we will rise up in those times because of the conviction has set its place in our hearts. Every showdown we face, starts in the heart. There are some many things that people hope will turn out well. A job interview, date, maybe a test, or even a loan application. The Rescue offered to us by Jesus was made complete following his death. More specifically, what happened after he had been buried. As followers of Christ, we believe that Jesus rose from the dead - fully. The long held belief of the called out ones (church) is that Jesus died, was buried, and rose physically from the dead. That is why the Rescue can happen at all. This week Pastor Butler, closes the Rescue series with “Proclaim”. It is in the resurrection that all believers do find their hope realized. Throughout history, the word for church has held various meanings, but its most definitive would be the “called out ones”. Called out for what? Again, multiple ideas and thoughts, but the clearest one from the Scriptures would be called out to call others to consider Jesus and the Rescue. The rescue is open to all who will put their lives completely in the hands of Jesus as Savior. The Rescue comes to all who are open to it. The Rescue comes by those who have been called out to call others. If we can speak of God’s Rescue, it’s because someone listened first to us. Listening means that a person has both heard you and has acted upon what you have said.
