Urban and community forestry is an aspect of the industry that is often overlooked, but ensuring that they are established and managed in ways that meet local needs while contributing to national and global initiatives is critical. Consequently, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) recently announced it would be developing a new standard, the Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard.

To get a better understanding of why SFI decided to develop a new standard, the progress that has been made so far, and the impact urban and community forests have on the public and the environment, CFI editor Ellen Cools spoke with Paul Johnson, SFI’s director of urban and community forestry.

According to Paul, “There is so much building evidence of the connection between trees and our ability not just to live in communities, but to thrive in our communities.” This standard “will give us an additional kind of roadmap to how to have a better program, and, at the same time, create an audited recognition program.”

The standard will also help build upon international climate change initiatives such as Canada’s 2 Billion Trees Initiative, and help combat public misperceptions about the industry’s sustainability, he says.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2021, we’ve released a special episode of The CFI Podcast, as part of our Women in Forestry series. In this episode, CFI editor Ellen Cools spoke with Carol Walker, a registered professional forester and manager of forestry policy and planning for the City of Toronto. Carol recently wrote a blog post for Women in Wood sharing her experience as one of few women of colour in the industry, in an effort to raise awareness about forestry as a potential career for women of colour.

We spoke with her about her experience in the industry, the barriers to getting more women of colour into forestry, the importance of fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, and more.

According to Carol, for the industry to become more diverse and attract more women of colour, women of colour need to see themselves represented in the career. They need to be exposed to forestry as a career option and see images of diverse people in those careers.

“People of colour have to see themselves. We have to see ourselves and have that acknowledgement that we’re not invisible, but rather that we, too, belong, and our contributions are welcome in the various roles,” she explained.

Since summer 2020, lumber prices have been strong, reaching unprecedented levels as demand skyrocketed after the first wave of COVID-19. But what does the North American lumber market look like in 2021?

To answer that question, we spoke with Keta Kosman, owner of Madison’s Lumber Reporter, in the latest episode of The CFI Podcast. We also discussed the lumber prices and demand seen in 2020, some of the main concerns for distributors and buyers, and other trends that we’ve seen in the past year.

According to Keta, we can expect to see strong lumber prices and demand for up to two years. This is not just because the pandemic sparked a boom in the repair and remodeling market, but also because, in 2020, millennials made up the largest cohort of first-time buyers for the first time.

“So, we’re now having a large demographic entering the U.S. housing market that has nothing to do with the pandemic. And that’s 25 years’ worth of people. So, it’s very positive,” she said. “Definitely through this year, there will not be a slowdown, and potentially also through 2022.”

Succession planning is critical to the future of Canada’s logging industry, but many loggers don’t have a succession plan. In fact, according to the results of CFI’s 2020 Contractor Survey, 36 per cent do not have a plan for their company after they retire. To get a better understanding of the challenges loggers face when it comes to succession planning, the importance of having such a plan, and the key elements that should be included, we spoke with Chris Duncan, national leader of forestry and forest products services for MNP, in the latest episode of The CFI Podcast.

Chris shared his experience helping logging contractors create a succession plan and the reasons why so many do not have a plan in place.

“When you look at the logging contracting world, there’s very slim margins. You’re focused on the day-to-day, trying to just really focus on what’s going to happen that week and what’s going to happen next week, maybe the month after that. A lot of folks aren’t looking five or 10 years out, and I think that’s a key part of it,” he said.

But, having a succession plan in place before retirement “allows you to maximize the benefits” of retirement, he said.

“I always say to people it doesn’t matter if you’re 65 or if you’re 35 – you should always have an idea of how you’re going to get out of your business in the future.”

In this episode of The CFI Podcast, in celebration of National Forest Week, we spoke with Kate Lindsay, vice-president of sustainability and environmental partnership at the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), about how much progress the industry has made changing public misconceptions about forestry’s sustainability, FPAC’s work advancing the industry’s position on environmental issues, the challenges that remain, and more.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” Kate said. “I’m learning that bringing awareness to the public, to customers, to investors, to government decision-makers and communities about the sustainability and benefits of using forest products – it needs to be a sustained and evolving conversation. There are some challenges before us: there’s a growing urban population that likely did not grow up with a direct connection to a forestry mill or operation. So, we need to connect them to the forest products that they love – the compostable packaging and recyclable materials that appeal to their green consciences.

“I think we’ve got a bit of an uphill battle in terms of the changing demographics,” she continued. “But it’s also about how we break down the messages, how we speak to the public, how we find something that resonates. It’s a challenge, but it’s a challenge we look forward to addressing.”

For forest product companies across Canada, the health of the trees and associated ecosystems is paramount. Understanding as much as possible about the trees and the surrounding environment is key to sustainably managing our forests. To do so, more and more companies are using LiDAR (Light Detection or Ranging). But what exactly is LiDAR and how does it work? What are its applications and benefits? What are the challenges to adopting this technology?

In the latest episode of The CFI Podcast, CFI editor Ellen Cools spoke with Cam Brown, strategic forester and manager of Forsite Consultants’ resource management and technology group, to answer those questions and more.

“This type of data is going to allow the industry to continue towards more safe and efficient practices, it’s going to increase confidence that we’re managing sustainably, and it’s going to help us better understand non-timber issues like wildlife habitat needs and how to manage for those needs,” Brown explained. “I think it’s really going to make us better at what we do. I don’t think it’s a magic bullet, but it really provides better vegetation, terrain and water information, and that’s everything we do in forestry.”

The Canadian Solar Industries Association and Canadian Wind Energy Association amalgamated this year to become the Canadian Renewable Energy Association—a new national voice for the wind, solar and energy storage industries.

Leading this new association is Robert Hornung, who served as president of CanWEA for 17 years.

“I would say we have a keen interest in ensuring that our discussions and debates around energy are fact-based, because we want to ensure that the decisions that we are taking are well-informed decisions going forward,” Robert says.

In this episode of Direct & Current, Robert joins Anthony Capkun to not only talk about CanREA’s vision and goals, but to dig deeper and answer questions like: Is there a distinction between renewable energies and green energies? (Yes, in fact) What was the rationale for adding energy storage to CanREA’s equation? What, exactly, does our energy future look like?

“It’s not our intention as an association to attack any other forms of generation... we will compare different forms of generation on a facts basis in terms of various attributes that they have, but the reality is we are going to need a lot of different approaches to deal with targets like those identified in the Paris accord,” Robert explains.

As Canada turns its attention towards a green economic recovery from COVID-19, forestry will have an important role to play. But there are still a lot of public misconceptions about the industry’s sustainability. Yet Canada leads the world in sustainable forest management, with an estimated 164 million hectares of forests certified under one of three programs: the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Canada, and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). These certification programs play a critical role in combatting the narrative that forestry is not sustainable by raising public awareness, working with communities and key stakeholders, and more.

To get a better understanding of the different issues these certification programs cover, how the certification landscape has changed over the years, and what forestry companies need to do to become certified today, we spoke with Jason Metnick, SFI’s senior vice-president of customer affairs, and Francois Dufresne, president of FSC Canada, in the latest episode of The CFI Podcast.

As the forest certification landscape in Canada has evolved, marketplace and consumer awareness of the industry’s sustainability has increased. As a result, the industry is well-positioned to fight the narrative that forestry is not environmentally friendly.

“I think one of the perceptions that we also are trying to fight is that risk side of forestry. No question about it, there is risk when you look at deforestation, illegal logging, biodiversity issues, but sustainably managed forests can provide rewards and move that narrative away from risks to rewards,” Metnick said.

Listen to the full episode to learn more about the FSC and SFI certification programs, the forestry sector’s sustainability journey, and more.

The latest episode of The CFI Podcast focuses on a very timely subject: wildfire research, response and prevention. Canada’s wildfire season is well underway now, with conditions right to result in severe wildfires across the country. And as we head into the hot summer months, it is bound to become worse.

So, we spoke with Michael Benson, manager of wildfire operations for FPInnovations, to learn more about Canada’s wildfire preparedness and response levels in recent years, the forest industry’s research and response efforts, the impact of good forest management practices, and more.

“By and large Canada really is in a fortunate position in terms of capacity, experience and expertise in the wildfire response field. However, even high reliability organizations have room for improvement,” Benson said.

He called for increased co-operation and communication among the provinces’ different wildfire agencies and between the agencies and forest products companies. Being prepared to answer the call, completing requisite training and communicating with wildfire management agencies before a wildfire event occurs are just some of the things forest companies can do to help minimize the impacts of wildfire.

In the latest episode of The CFI Podcast, we spoke with Kevin Edgson, president and CEO of EACOM Timber Corporation, board chair of the Forest Products Association of Canada and a member of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s board of directors, about the challenge of attracting younger people to the industry.

One reason why fewer young workers have been entering the industry is the outdated perception of the industry and associated opportunities, Edgson explained.

“I think the perception rests in the old view that it was very labour intensive and a harsh environment when, in fact, there’s some really interesting technologies, it’s sustainable, it’s green, it’s an environment that’s not an office,” he said.

As a result, the industry needs to communicate and engage society to help them understand what the industry is about, how industry sustainably manages forests, the technology involved and the available career paths, Edgson said.

Massage therapists frequently experience strained relationships with the public and media.

Associations with the sex trade, sexual abuse, alternative therapies and insurance fraud have hurt the profession. Practitioners can influence public perception by reaching out to the media while sending the right messages to the front line of their practice.

In this edition of On the Table, we speak with RMT and veteran of public and media relations, Margaret Wallis-Duffy. Learn critical skills to position you in positive light, whether speaking to a referring health professional, your patients, or the media.

Twenty-eight years ago, at the age of 14, Tyler Pelke, deputy fire chief at the City of Red Deer Emergency Services in Alberta, went through a horrific ordeal. An assailant murdered his friend, assaulted Tyler, slit his throat, threw a blanket on him, doused it with gas, set him on fire and left him to die.

Somehow, Tyler survived the violent attack. His assailant was caught and sent to prison. Later, Tyler found it within himself to confront his attacker in jail and find peace and purpose in life through a journey of forgiveness. He now speaks to audiences across North America about the power of forgiveness and why understanding your purpose in life is the key to dealing with adversity.

Tyler talks to Fire Fighting in Canada editor Grant Cameron about the experience and how he refused to let the events of his past define him. Tyler believes it’s important for people to find a purpose because that will give them hope. He’s a living example of how to turn a negative into a positive.

Without provincial health funding, clients of RMTs rely heavily on employee health benefit plans (EHBPs) to finance their massage therapy care. Worker's compensation and auto-insurance are reportedly tough to work with, and increasingly insurers attempt to position themselves as guardians of health care funding.

With adversity rising in relations with some insurers, practitioners worry for this source of funding while insurers are critical on whether utilization of massage therapy provides real value for dollars spent.

In this edition of On The Table, we speak with RMTAO Executive Director Andrew Lewarne on his conversations with GreenShield, the concerns insurance companies are expressing, and what the massage therapy profession can do to improve insurer relations.

Despite massive leaps forward in the world of technology, information sharing and an increasingly sophisticated cyber platform for crime to take place, “the essence of an investigation still needs to be that thorough search for the truth, that analysis of the available intelligence in evidence, and trying to make sense of the objective in mind to hopefully secure the investigation,” says Mick Creedon, the former chief constable in Derbyshire, England, in the first episode of Blue Line, The Podcast.

Creedon was the national lead for the police service in matters including serious and organized crime, covert policing, investigative interviewing, money laundering, financial investigation and asset recovery. He also served as the policing lead in the development of the network of multi-force and multi-agency regional organized crime units.

Listen to our conversation with Creedon in the box below. He chats more about financial investigation as part of the investigators’ toolbox as well as enhancing the attack on criminality. This episode looks at what the modern-day investigator has to do and can do, including the need to utilize the opportunities offered by financial investigation.

One day, though, he reached out and found help.

Chris talks to Fire Fighting in Canada editor Grant Cameron about his struggles and eventual recovery from the depths of despair.
