On Episode 58 of the Team Stripes Podcast – host Logan Bunn speaks with Kelly Cooke, an accomplished referee who was one of the four female officials to work the 2019 NHL Pre-Season.
Kelly began her officiating career at the age of 12, following in her brother’s footsteps – as he was also an official. While developing as an official she also had quite the talent as a player. Kelly would go on to play Prep School and later on at Princeton University. Not stopping there – once completing her time at Princeton she would go on to join the Boston Blades of the CWHL and later the Boston Pride of the NWHL. She never stopped pursuing officiating, and even balanced that with her training to become a lawyer!
As an official Kelly has achieved some impressive milestones, including being part of the first ever all-female officiating crew in the history of the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four. Kelly has also worked international hockey in several different countries. She is still involved with the NWHL – but this time as the Director of Player Safety.

Fresh off his recent retirement from the AHL - veteran referee Keith Kaval makes his return to the Team Stripes podcast. Keith makes our podcast history being the first returning guest.

For this episode we interview former WHA/NHL Linesman, Wayne Bonney. Wayne got an early start to officiating, and reached the WHA at the tender age of 18. He encountered quite a bit of success and got to work the WHA finals before making the switch to the NHL along with five other WHA officials. Wayne had a trememdous career, working almost 2,500 games, including five trips to the Stanley Cup Finals. He remains one of only two officials, alongside Bill Friday, to have accomplished this feat.
Along the way Wayne has some great memories, including working two NHL games in one day and being one of the first referees to wear a helmet (and the very first to wear a visor). He recounts these to us in our interview - and much more. Be sure to tune in and give this episode a listen.

In episode 18, we talk with former NHL linesman Andy McElman. Andy worked 1500 NHL games, actually retiring on his 1500th game. He has a unique journey because he was released by the NHL, before working his way back into the league. Andy has worked an NHL All-Star game, the Winter Classic in Wrigley Field, as well as the Olympic games in Sochi. He is currently the director of officiating for the SPHL. Andy gives a lot of credit to USA Hockey for his on-ice success.
