We as Kenyans have a very poor honour culture and I strongly believe that this is as a result of not knowing or understanding our history. Africans predominately used story telling as a way to transfer information from one generation to the next and this unfortunately is dying as the family and community structure evolves. Rather than 'coulda-woulda-shoulda' the situation and dwell on the negatives I decided to find a solution and be proactive by placing a camera in front of various industry pillars to document their journey/stories. #theplayhouse #cta101

The public had been yearning for something contemporary but grounded in the local identity. The quest for a different kind of artiste led him to the Florida 2000 discotheque for the Star Search where he bumped into a trio of hip hop artistes from Dandora who called themselves 3 D before they changed it to Kalamashaka. Kama (Paul Ngige), Roba, the Oteraw ( Robert Mtumbai) and Johnny Vigeti. They already had three singles in English and they had a rugged style that sounded like American hip hop group, Lost Boyz...

The music business in Kenya underwent a major transformation in the late 1990s. A new generation of young musicians were trickling on to the scene, encouraged by the opening up of the countryβs first FM radio stations. The FM boom meant that there was a lot more space on the airwaves for the promotion of homegrown music than had been the case on the state-run stations. The artiste at the vanguard of the emerging music trends was Harrison Ngunjiri Maina, known by the stage name Hardstone.
