Basically, I’ve become completely disillusioned with my voice, my guitar playing and my songwriting in general, which has created something of a problem for me as a songwriter, singer and guitarist. SO, I spent some time playing around with some different noises, an 808, a sampler, a Korg, (all free software plugins mind, not the “real” things!) and created a little world for myself where I could try and step outside of myself a bit and not feel so rubbish about my own creative practice. By creating this little ecology of sound, picking arbitrary chord sequences and even creating a system where I had very little say over the chord sequence, I gave myself some much needed space to just sing whatever words came to mind at the time, with whatever tune sprang out of my vocal chords. Then I seasoned the recipe to taste by adding a load of vocal processing and effects (mainly so I could actually listen to my voice so I could mix the E.P.), and deliberately created an E.P. that feels like it could fall apart at any moment, while still delivering what I see as pop music with semiconscious influences from Terry Riley, Radiohead, Kanye West, Migos and John Cage (well, that’s what I hear when I listen to it anyway).
