Below is the interview that we had with Peter Williamson from New Zealand:
Question:Which captains or guilds do you drop Skatha/Theron?Â
Peter Williamson: Disclaimer I feel like you can drop any captain into any match up, I don't feel like it is necessarily wrong, these are just my personal preferences
AlchemistsTheronIf they drop smoke I feel Theron just ends up generating way more momentum to clear the conditions, Forcing smoke player to go first and it just ends up a bad time for Smoke. Midas is stronger into Theron, but since the errata I haven't even seen him.
BlacksmithsTheron - Leaning theron but haven't played itToo early for me to have concrete feelings on this, but given they tend to set up a couple of players anything that can mess with this, I feel is a good way to go
BrewersSkatha
Esters condition clearing game is really frustrating for Theron. Just score goals with Skatha and use the speed of players to pick off the players with weak counter attacks. Try not to play the brewers game although sometimes i admit you get half way into the game and go, why am I in the middle fighting these guys?
ButchersTheron
Most Hunters actually have very strong counter attacks. I feel like you can out brawl Butchers. You can use back to the shadows to force them to move into you, then counter to avoid damage. It's not a certain thing by any means.
EngineersSkatha
This may sound weird and counter-intuitive. The way I feel to destroy most control teams, is to out football them. Apply all sorts of pressure on them. Control teams generally congregate around the goal, meaning if you do get the ball off them. You can often take a 2 dice shot on goal and score. Also Engineers are a pain to kill, although Ratchet will usually die at least twiceÂ
FarmersFucked if i know, Still bitter and twisted :), see my last 3 games scores vs Farmers
in theory there is merit to both captains
FishermanTheronvs Corsair Play Stand behind a nimble Fahad first turn with Theron. I like Egret in this match up, because if she does get roped in, she can usually snap fire a few times to get out of the death bubble. Forcing movement and additional resources to be spent trying to kill her. It's quite hard for Hunters to be honest, because the ball is very hard to keep under control.Â
HuntersSkathaSee my comments about Engineers, Theron is quite susceptible to ball pressure from multiple angles.Â
MasonsSkathaIt's Interesting because I feel like Honour I really want Theron, but against Hammer... I don't feel like Theron achieves anything at all. Sure he may stop Hammer from doing stuff, but then Theron isn't exactly doing much in turn. So I feel you can use Skatha's team slipperiness to avoid Hammer all together. Seemed to work in practice and vs Fraser in the semi final, where Hammer didn't achieve too much for the first few turns
MorticiansSkathaHonestly playing either is fine. No real preference, I just like Skatha due to Obulus is a little less pain of the arse, as you can snowball in and grab the ball off him. Where Theron doesn't have many options.
Union
TheronVet Rage honestly kills Theron and usually Seenah, but I feel like you can trade kills rather effectively. Vrage gets very hesistant about committing. If he goes too deep he just ends up dying. Once Vrage does end up cleaning out Theron and Seenah, the other players are usually nowhere near him for him to carry on his rampage.Â
So it's a pretty 50/50 split as to which captain I prefer. I don't think there is a perfect pattern to be deduced from it. Some brawly teams i use Theron, some I use Skatha.Â
Question:What's your favorite lineup?Peter Williamson: I have 2Skatha, Fahad, Ulfr, VHearne, Zarola, Jaecar
Identify the guy you can kill with Jaecar (usually a player with <= 17 hp and a poor counter attack). Use your speed to get Jaecar into target at the bottom of turn 1. Get 4-5 Momentum from that player, stay engaged, go first kill that player, get him out of harms way. Then spend the rest of the turn denying them momentum and looking to set up a goal at the bottom of 2 / top of 3. It's pretty much how every game with Skatha goes. E.g. Engineers go for Ratchet, Masons Mallet etc..
Theron, Fahad, Minx, Seenah, Egret, JaecarThis team i found pre-errata to be the most effective, and I have mostly just stuck with it. If ain't broke don't fix it. It brawls very well and I find Egret is very key to softening up the opponents. Plus she is good to kick off, as you can hit them with great flurry if they clump during deployment. In all you generally just brawl and force players to commit on to Theron.Â
Question: Why not Chaska, Why not Ohearne, Snow?Peter WIlliamson: Chaska I feel is very limited. His damage output is non momentous and both Hearnes and Theron want to make use of there own Blessings, All in on 2 dice? i'll pass...oHearne is great. he is very fragile and does play quite far forward. So he often ends up dying for me. He's good and I really want him, I just find I have my set line up's and I can't take himSnow, well... I can only take 1 mascot so am taking Fahad for def 5 if actually nothing elseQuestion: How do you use Seenah?Â
Peter WIlliamson: Theron, I usually play Seenah roaming behind Theron, using him as a deterrent to anyone wanting to commit haphazardly to me. He will generally be the counter punch to take out a presnared target by Theron, or Minx or Jaecar. The plus 1 VP is huge difference between him and oHearne in my books. It just can win games, and forces opponents mascots to play slightly differently
Skatha, if I play Seenah she is usually used as a sacrificial bear. Lobbing him as far forward on turn 1. To buy me as much board as possible (might get a take out if skatha is presnared the target, but probably will fall short). Whilst they congregate around him (& thus the goal), they aren't threatening the rest of the pitch, allowing me to play football. I give up 2 vp and momentum sure, but I hope to score at least once and then the kick out options are extremely limited
Question: What are strengths/weaknesses of the hunters Guild?Â
Peter Williamson: They have a ridiculous amounts of strengths.Â
* Such diverse captains
* Maneuverability 3x back to the shadows
* good counter attacks. Excluding seenah and Hearnes
* Reasonable Brawl potentialÂ
Weaknesses
