LET US ADORE HIM Matthew 2:1-12 As we gather for Christmas Eve, we turn our hearts to Bethlehem. The story of the Wise Men in search of the child-born King of the Jews has captured our imaginations and fostered many sermons. We know little about these men who travel a long distance following a star, hoping to pay homage to this king. What we do know is that they are tenacious in their search. We find that their journey stirs the entire city of Jerusalem, spurning jealousy in the reigning king and intrigue from his scribes.   In our series Let Us Adore Him, we are researching the story of the incarnation and how individuals respond to the news of Jesus’ birth. The Wise Men are shown to be tenacious and diligent in their search. King Herod reveals the darkness of his heart by responding to the message of a king’s birth by trying to eliminate that king. The scribes may have the oddest responses in that they don’t respond at all. The scribes delivered the scriptural text confirming where the king was to be born but couldn’t be bothered to go 5 miles to Bethlehem to confirm the scripture. Ultimately, the greatest response is found when the Wise Men discover Jesus and Mary and pay him homage by delivering gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.   To close our series, we must consider our response to Jesus. This story reveals the real-life outflow that occurs when people are confronted with the news of Jesus.  What is left for us is to respond. Hopefully, our response will not be fear, anger, or insecurity but rather obedience, adoration, and hope. We end our Christmas Eve service by lighting candles and singing Silent Night. When the song ends, we lift the candles high and hold them in silence. Our prayer this year is that as we lift our candles high, it will be an affirmation of the hope that we hold in our hearts not just for ourselves but for all the world to see.

LET US ADORE HIM Luke 2:1-20 The Christmas story has been shared for almost 2000 years. The sacrifice of Mary and Joseph, the birth of Jesus, and the bad decision-making of an innkeeper all work together to bring us the greatest birth narrative ever told. This week, in our focus on the Christmas story, one would imagine that if the Son of God was entering the world, great care would be taken to prepare a place for his birth. One would also assume that the whole world would be on point, waiting to receive this child. Neither of these two things happened. With no fanfare or great celebration, Jesus was born.   In our time, we will explore the ancient registration that took Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and consider the role of shepherds in this incarnation story. The events of this night changed the world forever, and studying the people engaged in its unfolding will help us discern our own connection to the greater story.

LET US ADORE HIM Week 2: Luke 1:26-56 In week two of our series, we focus on Mary and Elizabeth. These two ladies couldn’t have been in more different life scenarios. Elizabeth was older, with life winding down. Mary was young and engaged to be married. Both are pregnant with God at work in their stories. Mary is pregnant by the Holy Spirit and carrying the Son of God, while Elizabeth is expecting the one prophesied to be the front runner for Jesus to prepare the way. The responses of these two women shape the biblical narrative in great ways, becoming icons of the faith in how they willingly allow God to use their lives to change the world. Our study considers what our response might have been to this type of announcement. Would we be willing to sacrifice to the degree of Mary and Elizabeth? Would our faith withstand an untimely pregnancy or even the visit of an angel? Join us as we learn about the sacrifice of these amazing women.

Matthew 1:18-25 In week one, we are confronted with the life of a simple carpenter who finds himself in an impossible situation. The Biblical text considers Joseph a righteous man, with his life burgeoning and the hope of marriage and family. The sudden announcement of an unplanned pregnancy flips Joseph’s plans upside down. Later, clarification comes to Joseph in the form of a divinely inspired dream, suddenly making Joseph’s impossible situation an opportunity for obedience. It is hard to believe that a deviation in plans to this degree might lead one to a place of worship or adoration. Joseph was caught off guard by this scenario in that a dream would be required to connect him to the greater purpose of this moment. One has to wonder if Matthew’s intention in sharing Joseph's dream might be an intentional nod to Joseph, the dreamer found in the Old Testament text. Both would play a significant role in the greater life of faith. Does God still confront us with unexpected opportunities to be obedient? Might we have responded in the same way as Joseph? Join us as we consider Joseph’s response to the Incarnation of Jesus

In our final week of, Living Generously, we turn to an encounter of Jesus in the last few weeks of his life. In Luke 18:18-30, a rich ruler asks Jesus how to obtain eternal life. Jesus quizzes the ruler and finds a person who has allowed his wealth to take prominence in his life. Jesus’ charge, sell all you own, and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, Jesus invites the man to follow Him. But the request proves too difficult, and the ruler walks away disheartened.   Considering this story and generosity, we must ask ourselves a few questions. Does Jesus want us to sell all we own and give it away? Is our eternity linked to giving? The answers to these questions and so many more are found in the lessons of Luke 18. This study considers the heart and how quickly we betray our faith. We have to be careful not to allow this world's things to become more important to us than our faith in God. Living Generously means recognizing that all we have and all we are belong to God.

Living Generously   "The Love of Money" In our second week of Living Generously, we study the Apostle Paul’s instruction to Timothy. In 1 Timothy 6, Paul prepares this young pastor for ministry in Ephesus. This letter covers many topics ranging from theology to basic community life instruction. Our focus comes from chapter 6 in which Paul offers insights about wealth and the dangers of allowing life to be consumed by its pursuit. This chapter informs our understanding of Living Generously by reminding us that a life of service and generosity leads to the storing up of treasure that is real life in Christ.

: The Widow’s Offering In our first week, consider one of the most famous giving passages in scripture, the widow’s mite found in Mark 12:38-13:2. This short story has stood as the standard lesson on proportional giving. The central figure of this story is a widow who chooses to present an offering that goes beyond generosity. This offering was all that the widow had to live on and represented literally the giving of her life. Jesus contrasts her gift with that of those giving out of their abundance. We are left to determine what lesson is to be garnered here.   Our task in this first sermon is to wrestle with the text leading into this story and immediately follow it to determine if we may have misunderstood the point Jesus was making. Could the widow’s gift be proof of Jesus’ rebuke lodged at the scribes just a few verses prior? Was this sacrificial gift offered as a result of scribes who made a practice of devouring resources while losing sight of their responsibility to care for those like the widow? We will unpack, working through the text, to see what lessons can help shape our hearts as we strive to live generously.

The closing of Habakkuk’s writing is profound. This prophet has been challenged to the greatest degree of his faith. His response to this challenge is found in chapter three. He writes a song of worship. In this song, Habakkuk echoes the story of faith for the Israelites and proclaims God’s salvation and strength to be found in the struggle. This song of declaration can be taken as an affirmation to all who have experienced injustice. God can be trusted! Join us as we sift through Habakkuk's words to see what hope is offered as we struggle through a world of injustice. Maybe his song of worship can be one that we decide to cling to.

Habakkuk starts Chapter 2 by expecting to receive an answer from God. This begs the question, how do we listen to God? What happens if God’s response is not what we expect? Are we willing to be challenged? In this chapter, we find God willing to go to great lengths to see justice prevail. But, the unfolding of God’s story seems incomprehensible to Habakkuk. The lessons we learn in this dialog teach us about the nature and character of God. The chapter ends with Habakkuk declaring that the Lord is in his temple. In other words, God is on the throne and fully in control. Join us as we study chapter two and consider the unique ways that God responds to injustice.

Why does evil seem to thrive? Does God even care? Why would God allow this to happen? Have you ever found yourself pondering the answers to these questions? You are in good company. Habakkuk, one of the minor prophets of the Old Testament, has a full-blown conversation with God about injustice. He questions, wrestles, pushes, and processes God’s response. In chapter one, Habakkuk lodges his complaint with God. A response quickly follows but God assures Habakkuk that he will not be able to comprehend the degree to which God will go to ensure that Justice prevails. As usual, God is correct. Join us as we study chapter one and contemplate what God has to say about injustice and what our response should be.

In this final week of our series covering the Gospel According to Luke, we will complete our study of this book. We will look at Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem, including his death, burial, resurrection, and multiple appearances.   Undeniably, chapters 20-24 line up closely with the other three Gospel accounts. The details highlighted might be presented differently, but the core of this last week of Jesus’ life is well documented. Jesus continued to level his frustration at religious leaders while preparing his disciples for what was next. The disciples followed Jesus with seemingly no concern for what the end of the week might hold. One can only guess what they must have felt when a simple trip to pray in a garden resulted in the arrest of Jesus. This late-night stroll would lead to unimaginable pain and loss for the disciples. Thankfully, the dark days of Jesus’ arrest, death, and burial were followed by his resurrection. Death was conquered, and Jesus was alive.   As we consider these chapters, notice how Luke highlights the people who recognized Jesus as either innocent or holy. The outsiders, the outcasts, and the outlaws could discern that Jesus was sent by God. How did this revelation impact them? How would the world forever be changed? And what are we called to do with the knowledge of this incredible story? Luke paints a picture of Jesus spending his life pursuing those who were lost. Will we be willing to do the same?

In the third week of our study of T_he Gospel According to Luke_, we cover ten chapters from Luke 9:51 to 19:10.   In Luke 9:51, Luke transitions the ministry of Jesus from being centralized in and around Galilee to now on the road to Jerusalem. Jesus starts this journey by sending disciples ahead of him to prepare the towns and villages for his arrival. In doing so, the disciples learned to carry the Good News and practiced the lessons they learned. Conflict arises as Jesus intentionally confronts the religious leaders who were not caring for or reaching the lost. These clashes lead to a major disdain for Jesus by the Pharisees, the lawyers, and the Sadducees. Jesus uses this journey to Jerusalem to teach foundational messages about wealth, possession, faith, and discipleship. Sometimes, these messages were delivered employing teaching, but often, the point was made in a parable.   The ministry on the road to Jerusalem section of teaching ends as Jesus nears Jericho in chapter 19. Jesus makes one last big statement about his core belief for the lost by calling the chief tax collector, Zacchaeus, to follow him. Zacchaeus responds to the call with a willingness to make right all the wrongs he has committed against his fellow Israelites. Jesus reacts to his decision by reminding us in Luke 19:10 that “the Son of Man came to seek out and save the lost.”   As we consider these chapters, there is no denying that Jesus was on a mission. His heart was to reach the lost, and he was frustrated with anyone who stood in his way. This realization should cause us to stop and consider how we view our place concerning the lost and adjust accordingly.

Fall Launch (Aug 11): The early church set the standard for what a true community should look like. In Acts 2, the writer Luke gives us a beautiful snapshot of what the early church looked like. The early church ate together, worshiped together, fed one another and served wherever there was need. Luke’s description causes us to consider how we are doing in our communities of faith today. In this first message, we will study the early church and discuss how the Holy Spirit connected believers around the areas of gathering, grouping, giving and serving.

In this second week of Paul’s missionary journeys, we continue following Paul on his first journey as he travels into Iconium, Lystra and Derbe. In these cities, we start to discover the extreme persecution that Paul and Barnabas would find as they carried out the mission. An uprising occurs and Paul is stoned and left for dead. Believers took his body and found him alive. They restored him and set him back on his way. Even after this horrible attack, Paul would not be denied. He and his companions circle back around and make their way through the cities that they originally met in ultimately leading them back home by boat. The lessons we learn in Acts 14 are hard lessons to learn. Not everyone will receive the message of Jesus with joy. Not everyone is willing to stand beside or politely disagree with you. Paul learned that some people will attack and might even try to silence your voice. How will we respond in moments like this?

Week 5 (5/5/24): After striking a Covenant with Israel, God moved his people to the edge of the land that he promised to give them. In this story found in Numbers 13 and 14, God allows 12 of the leading men of Israel to spy out the land. After 40 days of searching, they determined that the land did indeed flow with Milk and Honey but that it would be impossible to conquer because of the inhabitants. Two of the twelve leaders pushed back on the report and felt that God would honor Israel and give them possession if they remained faithful. This is where Israel falls short and is blocked from entering the land except those children under 20 years of age. How often do we forget about God’s goodness in our lives? We see the challenges in front of us but forget that God goes before us to fight our battles. What are some areas of our lives that we have not trusted God with?

Week 2 (4/14/24): Journeying through the Wilderness sometimes leads to a dead end. In the case of our study this week, not only did the Israelites run into the Red Sea, but the Egyptians were hot on their trail. Being hemmed in on all sides can give rise to fear and that is exactly what happens. The people of God now wish they had stayed in Egypt and it was too late to make a change. God’s instruction… keep moving. Sometimes the only way to deal with a problem is to walk right through it. And that is exactly what God requires the Israelites to do. Moses raises his staff, God sends the wind, the water separates and the people cross on dry ground. Rarely does God save us in the way we believe it should happen. I guarantee that splitting the Red Sea was not on Moses’ list of possible outcomes. With no requirement from the people, God splits the water and then asks them to keep walking. How many times do we feel like life has trapped us? How often have we cried, complained, and bemoaned the place we find ourselves only to have God use that moment to reveal his power to us? How many problems have we wasted way too much time on trying to navigate around when God is asking us to walk right through the middle of it? This week we will study Exodus 14 and discover what God may be helping us to understand about our own Red Sea moments.

Week 1 (4/7/24): We start our series in Egypt with the 10th and final plague. It is in this story that we discover the basis of our knowledge surrounding the Passover lamb and the life that was given to save the lives of the Israelites. The offering of this spotless lamb and the placement of the shed blood on the doorposts of each Israelites home is where we derive our connection to Jesus as the ultimate Passover lamb. As a result of this plague and the death of the firstborn of the Egyptians, the Israelites are released into the wilderness and the journey of transformation begins.

Week 7 Easter (Mar 31): Resurrection Day: Mary Magdalene Mary Magdalene shows up in scripture as a person whose life has been Forever Changed because of her encounter with Jesus. Scripture is silent on most of the details surrounding this encounter except one. Luke 8:2 informs us that Mary was delivered from seven demons. What must her life have been like before Jesus? Imagine the emotional turmoil and trauma she would have experienced at the hands of such evil. ‌ One thing is certain, the impact of Jesus healing Mary would not only be life-changing but would also be world-changing. Mary’s gratitude and tenacity as a result of her transformation led her to be a follower of Jesus in the most faithful of ways. In the early years, Mary used her resources to fund and support the work being done by Jesus. And when the final days arrived and preaching and healing turned into flogging and crucifixion, Mary became even more faithful and was present to all of it. Mary was present at the cross and his death. Mary was even present when the body of Jesus was placed in the tomb. Of course, it was Mary early on resurrection day who found the empty tomb and ultimately, after everyone else left, stayed at the tomb until she found her Lord. ‌ Was it the gratitude found in the freedom of her changed life? Was it the experience of being a part of something so profound where lives were being changed all around? What brought this dedication and tenacity to the forefront of Mary’s life that would cause her to be the first to witness Jesus defeating death and the grave? Imagine that, Jesus chose a woman who had been plagued by seven demons to be the first to witness the resurrection.

Week 6 Palm Sunday (Mar 24): Peter Is this going to be a good day or a bad day? Will my feet be used to move me in a positive direction or will I end up saying something that will prove yet again that I have a foot shaped mouth? I wonder if Peter ever asked himself these questions? Our Forever Changed Series turns this week to focus on Peter. Sometimes we forget that Peter’s given name is actually Simon. When Jesus offered Simon the name Peter, it was for a greater purpose than just a term of endearment. Jesus used the names interchangeably as a reference for Simon to know if he was pointed in the right direction or possibly needed a course correction. Peter would ultimately become foundational and instrumental in the life of the early church but the journey getting there was full of all sorts of exciting moments. Questions for us to consider: How often does the speed of our mouth outpace the filter of our hearts? Will steps be taken today to move us closer to the intended purpose of God? What name might Jesus use to call us to a more intentional life?

Week 5 (Mar 17): John Could it be youthful bravado or maybe indiscretion? One thing is certain, the disciple John that we read about in the gospels is vastly different than the apostle that crafts the Gospel of John. That is not to say that the person is different, but rather that John’s life was Forever Changed by his encounters with Jesus. John’s earliest recorded moments found him rebuking others for casting out demons, offering to call down fire from heaven to consume an entire village, and pressing Jesus for a seat of honor. Each of these moments is less than a glowing report on a disciple’s record. These earliest reports are countered heavily by his late-in-life writings. We find that the disciple who threatened mass burning would eventually pen the words in 1 John 3:18 (NRSV), “Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” John’s transformation was lifelong and as a result, he left the church with an incredible body of writings that will forever shape the way we balance truth and love. Have you ever encountered someone who was all truth with no love? Have you ever tried to reason with someone who was all love with no truth? In what ways has society twisted or abandoned one or both of these two principles that John worked so hard to establish as foundational in the life of a believer?

Week 3 (Mar 3): Philip Come and see! This week in our series, Forever Changed, we focus on Philip. Clearly, Philip was a visual learner. His desire to know God set him on a quest that started with his connection to John the Baptist but ultimately led to him being a disciple of Jesus. In this transition, Philip drug his friends along by inviting them to, “Come and see.” Throughout the course of his life, Philip seemed to ask probing questions that stemmed from a desire to find a deeper connection to faith. On one such occasion, Philip asked Jesus to show him the Father. Philip’s question led to our deeper understanding that Jesus in fact was the revealing of the Father. His persistence in asking, his willingness to listen, and his heart to change ultimately led Philip to a place where he became one of the first apostles to carry the message to Samaria (Acts 8). This region received his message in such a way that it was said that people were hearing and seeing the signs that he did. Who would have guessed that a person so bent on seeing would be the one that others would gather to see? What are we asking for God to show us? What is it that God has done that we are unable to see? And, How can we be more like Philip by inviting others to, come and see?

Week 2 (Feb 25): Nicodemus Imagine spending your whole life at the top of your profession only to discover that you really didn’t understand the profession at all. This is the story of Nicodemus. As a Pharisee of Pharisees, Nicodemus is thought of as one of the great religious leaders of his time. As a Pharisee, his focus would have been upholding the law and ensuring that all of Israel did the same. One evening, under the cover of darkness, Nicodemus seeks out Jesus and pursues insights to explain the miracles that he sees taking place. Jesus challenges Nicodemus by explaining that being born again would be required for one to see the kingdom of heaven. This statement temporarily breaks Nicodemus’ thought pattern but ultimately leads to a life that is, Forever Changed. Nicodemus had to be willing to sift through his theology and allow the heart of his tradition to be challenged. What theological constructs in our lives need to be considered in light of Christ? What traditions have we held on to that need to be let go? And, how do we allow the Gospel message to forever shape our lives?

In week two of the series “When we Pray” we will take a look at the Lord’s Prayer as it is found in the Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus provides a framework for his disciples on how to pray. This framework not only orients our hearts toward our heavenly father but also toward the community we belong to as Christ followers. We will explore a practical application of the Lord’s Prayer to one another as we participate in the body of Christ.

Have you ever considered why Jesus taught us to pray the way he did? In the first week of When You Pray we will explore Luke 11 and dive into the heart of Jesus’ lesson on prayer given to his disciples. We will discuss the importance of how we orient our hearts on our faith journey, ensuring our spiritual rhythms do not become empty repetition, wrestle with what role persistence has in our pursuit of God, and consider the relationship God has invited us to participate in.

As we close out the Speak Life sermon series, we turn our hearts to Ezekiel 37. It is easy to mistakenly think that our ability to speak life is derived from ourselves. If we truly believe that Jesus is the author of life, then we must know that our capacity to Speak Life is derived from our obedience to say the words that God gives us to speak. God has Ezekiel survey a valley of dry bones and asks one simple question: Can these bones come to life? God’s question and Ezekiel’s response reveal the true source of life as found only in God. As we study this scripture, I pray that we focus not on the mere nature of Speaking but rather on Life.

In our study this week, we will focus on the transition of power from Moses to Joshua. What does it mean to Speak Life in crucial moments like this one? Our text takes us through Deuteronomy 31:1-8 and Joshua 1:1-9. The encouragement to be strong and courageous permeates the entire text. As we consider this encouragement, we must realize that in order to truly be strong and courageous we must anchor out strength and courage in the Lord. Speaking Life is not just being positive, it must be connected to the heart and nature of God. Moses is clear to Speak Life while reminding Joshua of the importance of allowing God to be the constant in the life of Israel. It seems that we should do the same.

Choosing to speak life is not always the easiest thing to do. In some instances, we may find that our voice is not heard or has even been marginalized. In our scripture this week, we will unpack a story in which voiceless servants are the ones that Speak Life. God uses these voices and their words to heal a person that you would not expect God to heal. 2 Kings 5:1-19 challenges all of the social norms about whether or not standing in society should limit your ability to speak or God’s ability to bring life.

Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” In an election year that will be full of divisive and hurtful political posturing, we commit to Speak Life. This series focuses on key moments in the Biblical text when life was spoken and God’s plan was realized.

We do this every day without even thinking about it. We scoot over, add an extra place setting, hold the door on an elevator, rearrange the furniture, or move the cars in the driveway; we just naturally Make Room. This Christmas, we invite you to Make Room for Christ. Preparing our hearts for the greatest gift ever given requires being intentional. Betrothed, Mary had big plans, yet she made room. Winding life down in her later years, Elizabeth made room. Studying the stars, the Magi saw something unexplained and made room. Its days of prominence had come and gone, yet, Bethlehem made room for a king in the most unlikely of places. So, as you are Making room for all of the exciting moments this Christmas season will bring, we invite you to remember to Make Room for Christ.

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the churches of Galatia might be his most direct and harsh letter as he is deeply offended that anyone would minimize or pervert the Gospel message. The battle: Law vs. Faith. Can we work our way to salvation, or is salvation an act of faith? In this letter, Paul builds the theology that will forever establish the foundation of Christian thought.

Week 5: In this final study of the Gospel According to Matthew, we will consider the Passion Narrative. Chapters 26-28 take us through the most significant moments of our faith story. Through his retelling of the Passion, Matthew offers us a tremendous picture of the God who is present to Jesus in the most excruciating moments. Jesus, quoting Psalm 22, has long been misunderstood as God turning his face from his son rather than the intended reason of pointing the listener to Psalm 22. This Psalm reminds us that God will never leave us. Matthew closes his gospel account by sending his readers out to all nations… including Jews and Gentiles.

Week 4's study of the Gospel According to Matthew dives into chapter 18. Matthew often presents the teachings of Jesus in discourse form: The Sermon on the Mount (Ch 5-7), the Mission Discourse (Ch 10), and the Parabolic Discourse (Ch 13) are all examples of ways that Matthew groups teachings for a particular purpose. This week's study focuses on the Community Discourse found in Chapter 18, intending to provide the church community with an ethic by which to shape life together. Jesus encourages us to simplify the path for believers and always be willing to forgive.

As we move into week 3 in our study of the Gospel According to Matthew, we draw our attention to the Sermon on the Mount. The heart of Matthew’s Gospel is grounded in the message that Jesus delivers in chapters 5-7. After preaching this sermon, Jesus sets out around the region, healing in the surrounding cities. Word of Jesus spreads, and before long, the disciples find themselves surrounded by a diverse population representing those near and far. As Chapter 9 draws to a close and Chapter 10 opens, we find Jesus looking out over the diverse crowd, and he has compassion for them. It is in this moment that Jesus decides to activate the disciples and sends them out to continue the work that has already begun. Our study will ask ourselves what we are doing to reach these very same lost. Is the harvest still plentiful? Are the workers still few?
