The book of Psalms is a study in contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. This first Psalm lays out the ultimate choices, comparisons and consequences for all men - they must choose between God's way and their own way. God's way leads to blessing, delight, prosperity and life - man's way leads to sadness, scorn, vanity and death. The key in Psalm one is how we treat the words of God - whether we faithfully follow the LORD's way or foolishly follow the way of the wicked. Where are you in your life today-- Have you examined the comparisons-- Are ready for the consequences-- The choice is yours-
Today we begin a new series in the book of Ephesians. While this ancient letter, written by the apostle Paul, is relatively short, it is jam-packed with some amazing truth. At its heart is the reality of our identity in Christ.
Philippians is an ancient letter written by the Apostle Paul to a church located in the city of Philippi at around 61 AD. Paul wrote this letter while a prisoner in Rome, awaiting his trial before Emperor Nero. --In those days, Roman guards were not responsible for providing the basic needs of their prisoners, which meant prisoners relied heavily on the donations of family and friends. While we don't know the exact situation, Paul was in need, and the church in Philippi was aware of this need and, when the opportunity presented itself, took a collection and sent it to Paul. An individual, by the name of Epaphroditus, took on the task of hand-delivering this financial gift, which included close to 800 miles of travel, mostly on foot, that almost killed him. Once Paul received this gift, he responded by writing this letter to show his appreciation, express his love, give them some encouragement, and further instructions.--One of the biggest themes of this letter is -joy.- Joy is a resilient gladness that can be experienced regardless of the situation we may find ourselves in. This soul-satisfying, sustainable joy can only be found in our relationship with Jesus our Lord-in who He is, what He's done, what He's doing, and what He's going to do.--CHAPTER 1-As the letter goes, Paul begins by first expressing his deep affection for these people and his prayer that the love they express towards him and each other would grow more and more. He wants them to understand that even though he's gone through much suffering, and is currently suffering, he has joy because God is using it to advance the gospel and inspire other believers. All in all, whether he lives or dies, Paul'
Paul concluded his message regarding spiritual gifts - emphasizing his words with fourteen commands. In all of their SERVICES, as they assembled together as a church, they each wanted to make a special contribution to the body. In contrast to their past selfish habits, Paul commanded them to make it their spiritual aim to always love each other with edification. He required that they be in SUBJECTION to each other in three specific areas- -1- recognition - tongues speaking must be interpreted and limited -they were to practice self-control when there was no interpreter-- -2- revelation - prophesying had to be overseen and restricted by other prophets -they were to practice self-control when God gave a revelation to a prophet who was seated-- and -3- restriction - women in church services were not permitted to speak -they were to practice self-control by subjecting themselves to the men, and by asking any questions they may have with their husbands at home-. In SUMMARY, Paul challenged them to elevate God and His Word above themselves- God guides us as our only authority- God grants us prophets who are spiritual and recognize His true words- God gifts individual believers -elevating prophecy over tongues-- and God's goal in the church assembled is a self-controlled harmony and orderly teamwork -avoiding selfishness and chaos-.
Paul now goes back to the root of the PROBLEM when he gives them three commands regarding their behavior in church- -1- Wake Up - they needed to recognize that they were thinking like children- -2- Back Up - they needed to stop speaking with wicked words- and --3- Grow Up - they needed to start thinking like spiritually mature adults. Paul pointed out -the Biblical PRINCIPLE that the gift of tongues was given as a signal - a foreign language used to get the attention of Jewish unbelievers, but it became a rejected language. The sign was unnecessary for believers, while being unavoidable for unbelievers. The PRACTICE of the whole church was really wrong. Paul gave them two hypothetical options to make his point- -1 - if they could all speak in tongues, the ungifted or unbeliever would think they were crazy- -2 - if they could all prophesy, the ungifted or unbeliever would experience conviction, have his sins condemned, and his deepest secrets made conspicuous. That man would fall down before God in great reverence and submission, reporting that God was really in your midst.
After explaining the superiority of the gift of prophesying over the gift of tongues -14-1-12-, Paul then emphasized the inferiority of speaking in an unknown language -14-13-19-. He commanded the Corinthian believers to DEPEND on God - Pray- Being mindful that they should never speak in a language without proper interpretation, because the result would be mindless and unfruitful. They were to DECIDE how to answer the question, -Therefore, what shall I do- with this dilemma- The answer is- -1- Always pray with your spirit -breath- and with your mind -brain-- and -2- Always sing with your spirit -breath- and with your mind -brain-. Otherwise, you will end up in a quandary, when the ungifted -ignorant- cannot understand and be edified by your message. Even though Paul's experience was using the gift of tongues more than any of them, his sincere DESIRE was to expose a church to as little as five understandable words that would instruct them, rather than ten thousand unknown words that carried no meaning.
Once Paul had rebuked the Corinthian church for abusing the gifts -Ch.12-, and established the preeminence of love -Ch.13-, he then explained the superiority of prophesying over speaking in tongues -Ch.14-. PRIORITIES in the church at Corinth were to include both love and spiritual gifts - but especially that of speaking God's prophesy when appropriate. Paul was writing because some PROBLEMS had arisen- -1- the contrast between tongues and prophecy - elevating tongues and neglecting prophesying- and -2- the confusion resulting from tongues -they were unclear and unprofitable. Paul challenged their PRACTICES as he explained that tongues -sounds- needed to have meaning -or else they came across as barbarians-. He only expected one thing in their assemblies - that they would love each other by seeking to edify.
Once Paul had clarified that spiritual gifts without God's love are useless -13-1-3-, and -that genuine love is supernaturally sacrificial -13-4-7-, he then exalted love as being forever superior to all of the gifts -13-8-13-. The CONTEXT compares -the perfect- -love- and the -in part- -gifts-. Paul's proclamation reveals that whereas love never fails, all spiritual gifts will come to an end. His explanation shows how spiritual gifts are only shared individually --in part-, but love -maturity- is shared universally, superceding the gifts and making them unnecessary. Paul CONTRASTS these two truths with an illustration between the immature and the mature - the gifts functioned like a child, but love is like a mature man. He continues his instruction distinguishing between present limitations -seeing dimly- knowing in part- and future connections -seeing face to face- knowing fully-. In CONCLUSION Paul summarized by exalting three lasting virtues -faith, hope, love-, but showing the total superiority of love.
Paul continues his rebuke to the church at Corinth for their misuse of the spiritual gifts. He explains what real love looks like with a general DESCRIPTION focuses on two areas- -1- a negative look describing how love holds back - it is always patient- and -2- a positive look describing how loves always gives out - it is kind. Paul then goes into greater detail regarding these two areas with thirteen DISTINCTIONS to explain some specifics about Godly love. In the negative realm of being patient you will never find love coveting, boasting, being proud or rude. It will never be selfish, touchy, resentful or gloating over others. In the positive realm of being kind you will always find love being joyful, loyal, faithful, confident and steadfast in its dealings with others.
Paul now arrives at the pure heart of Christian service within the church - it is God's love. He demonstrates in three areas how spiritual gifts are useless without real sacrificial devotion- First, one could use amazing WORDS such as perfectly speaking an unknown tongue, or even a hypothetical heavenly tongue, but it would only result in an ecstatic show and an empty sign without genuine love - the end result would be as useless as a loud irritating noise- Second, one could also WOW people with an exciting sermon including amazing prophecy, revealing secret knowledge and having unshakable faith - but without genuine love it would be empty service, and all of one's public efforts would have the end result of being worthless- Finally, one could perform impressing WORKS involving extreme sacrifice such as giving all of one's own possessions, and even delivering one's own body to be burned, but it too would be empty service without genuine love - the end result would be of no account, absolute zero.
We saw the Holy Spirit distribute the gifts -vv.1-11-, then unite the body -vv.12-26-, and now Paul explains the interaction of those individual parts as one spiritually balanced whole. These PERSONS involved are natural human beings with supernatural endowments - with Christ as the head who leads, each believer is on the team with a special role to serve. The PERFORMANCE of this team shows great diversity- it involves the foundational structure of apostles and prophets- the helpful service of teachers, workers of miracles, gifts of healings, and helps- and the meaningful signs of tongues and the interpretation of tongues. Yet each of those on this team are completely dependent upon one another in the unique balance of God. As they worked together we recognize the ultimate goal of God was PERFECTION. They were to be striving to highlight the greater gifts, and at the same time surpassing them with a far better approach - expanding the external visible actions into internal sacrificial devotion.
In 1 Corin.12-1-11 the Holy Spirit was distributing spiritual gifts to the church, now we see Him uniting the church. He took the many members and BAPTIZED them into one body. Paul used the example of the human body to explain the spiritual body of the church. His explanation revealed two ways that the Holy Spirit was involved- -1- -Baptism- is the identification of each member with the whole -connected in their position-- and -2- -Drinking- is the irrigation of each member with the indwelling Holy Spirit -united in their practice-. This relationship brought BALANCE to the body - an association that eliminated its divisions and appreciated its distinctions. God gave out assignments - His authority avoided atrocities. The Holy Spirit created the perfect BLEND of body interdependence -all parts critical-, each being indispensable -all parts essential-, and interconnected -all parts cared for-.
In 1 Corinthians 12-14 Paul addresses another question from the church at Corinth - the issue of spiritual gifts. He opens up with CONTRASTS between dumb idols and the Holy Spirit, seeking to remove their excuses of ignorance, their experiences of being led astray and their extremes regarding the real work of the Spirit of God. The genuine Deity supernaturally CONTROLS the distribution of -spirituals' - the Holy Spirit gives varieties of gifts -abilities-- the Lord gives varieties of ministries -services-- and God gives varieties of effects -results-. Finally, follows through with these CONTRIBUTIONS to display a common good, to give various distinctions in gifts, and to distribute to each believer individually.
Paul speaks to believers regarding three aspects of God's plan for their lives. The first is ADOPTION, which covers future redemption - they were waiting to receive new bodies, inheritance and the right to reign at the return of Jesus Christ -Rom. 8-23- Gal. 4-5-7-. God selected -chose- believers to be holy and blameless, predestinating them to receive sonship -adoption as sons- in Christ. The second aspect is ACQUITTAL, which is past redemption - the forgiveness of sins, where believers are delivered through His blood. God directed His plan to the summing up of all things in Christ - He alone will be the head. The third aspect is ANCESTRY, which describes future redemption - God's design predestined believers to be to the praise of His glory. Once these sinners had decided to take in the message of truth and place their trust in Christ alone, they were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise - a pledge toward their inheritance in the family of God.
In this fifth sermon, Habakkuk finally submits to faith in Yahweh. He explained his response as a POEM with- -1- the message - a prayer written down as a song to be sung in formal worship services- -2- the messenger - the prophet Habakkuk who served as a seer, speaking for Yahweh- and -3- the manner - according to Shigionoth, which described a style of music that was lively, emotional and majestic in its worship of God. Habakkuk then wrote out his PETITION to Yahweh. It was based on his reaction as he collected the facts about Yahweh and became alarmed with great fear. It included his request for Yahweh to preserve His people and to proclaim this intention along the way. It asked Yahweh to recall mercy in the midst of His correction by surrounding it with compassion.
Jesus meets with a key Jewish leader, who was open to Him being the Messiah. He explained the CONDITION that was required for Nicodemas -and every other man who has ever lived- to gain perspective regarding the kingdom of God - Nicodemas was perplexed. In his CONFUSION he reacted logically, not receiving the testimony of Jesus, but leaving himself in a bad position. Jesus then helped him to recognize who He was - the Son of Man who must be lifted up to be able to supply spiritual life to all men. This left Nicodemas with two clear CHOICES- -1- receive salvation as a gift from God, or -2- remain separated from God, hating the light and loving the darkness.
In this seventh and final sermon from Habakkuk, he closes his book on a high note. He honestly admits fleshly FEAR when he reflects on the correction that was coming from the Chaldeans. His physical reaction is trembling in his belly, quivering in his lips and decay in his bones. The reason for this severe reaction is because all he can do is wait for trouble to arrive, as God prepares the tool He will use for the invasion. But Habakkuk also reveals his spiritual FAITH in God. The problem will be as severe as one could imagine with extreme hunger and life-changing hardship. But he showed great perception as he was determined to fully depend on Yahweh -the covenant-keeping God- and Elohim -the creator delivering God-. Habakkuk was finally focusing on the provision that Yahweh Adonai -master- would supply. Ultimately, his strength would give Habakkuk security like hines' feet and military success in the land, as He caused him to walk on the high ground. Habakkuk closes by directing this message to be proclaimed with instruments in worship of the only true God.
In this sixth sermon Habakkuk constructs a psalm to be used in the worship of Yahweh by Judah -in their formal worship with musical instruments-. This poetical recounting of Yahweh's deliverance in the past was written to serve as a reminder for years to come as they waited for His deliverance in the future. It covered two areas- -1- Yahweh's APPEARANCE - being spectacular in His return to rescue His people -His presence was both startling in judgment and scary in misery-. It also showed -2- His ACTIONS that brought salvation to both -a- creation - having shown deliverance and deference- and -b- His creatures - rescuing Judah with full revenge, even against strong resistance.
In this third message Habakkuk questions Yahweh's plan to use the Chaldeans to discipline Judah. He recognizes Yahweh's absolute AUTHORITY as the One who is self-existent -never changing-, secure -covenant keeping- and yet He is silent -allowing evil to triumph without saying anything-. Ignoring the fact that Judah has rebelled against her Maker, Habakkuk cries out against her ABUSE. She is totally susceptible to her enemies - vulnerable like fish in a net, while they are victorious, simply dragging her away. They are greatly successful over Judah - celebrating to their gods and completely controlling her demise. What's left- Habakkuk can only wait in ANTICIPATION. Watching for Yahweh to do what is best for Judah.
In this fourth message Yahweh responded to Habakkuk's complaint. The Chaldeans had an eternal LIABILITY to God, so He commanded His prophet to explain His vision by preserving it in writing and by publicizing it out loud through his messengers. He wanted Judah to expect the promise to be fulfilled, and to patiently await its' arrival. Yahweh then pointed out the potential liability of those who take the extreme position of not being right with God. Their pursuits clearly reveal that they are unrighteous. Yahweh continued His condemnation with a LAMENT of five woes -interjections of strong dissatisfaction pre- sented as proverbs-. Woe -1 is against him who steals from others - looting and plundering many nations- Woe -2 is against him who covets what is not his - getting evil gain and cutting off many peoples- Woe -3 is against him who murders - violently killing others to build their cities- Woe -4 is against him who makes others drunk - so as to look on their nakedness- and Woe -5 is against him who trusts in idols - carving them and deceiving.
God answers Habakkuk's complaint - He makes it clear that He is planning to correct Judah's sin, but His -spanking stick- is clearly not what Habakkuk expected. The LORD had PREPARED one of their enemies to be God's tool for discipline. What He was about to do was unbelievable, and God expected them to be completely shocked as He sent the ungodly Chaldeans to correct them. The Chaldeans were a POWERFUL people in four ways- -1- their kingdom was sovereign at that time- -2- their army was speedy in its ability to attack- -3- their method of attack was very successful against other nations- and -4- their attitude was scornful as they mocked other kings. The LORD would use them to accomplish His purposes, and then they too would be PUNISHED. God's discipline would only be temporary to get Judah to turn back spiritually, and then the Chaldeans would be terminated permanently.
The book of Habakkuk is fascinating. It opens with the prophet WATCHING - he had received revelation from the LORD, and showed recognition of that vision. In his WAITING for justice, he began to complain against God, accusing Him of giving Habakkuk the cold-shoulder and of being cold-hearted for not delivering Judah. He then questioned God, WONDERING why He was making Habakkuk witness the anarchy and experience the arguments of the ungodly. He then closed with a serious WARNING that the law was ineffective -being ignored- and that justice was totally invalid -coming out perverted-.
In this message we look at the true church of Jesus Christ, as founded in Acts 2. The FOCUS of that new assembly was on their common salvation in Christ - they received Peter's message on the day of Pentecost and then revealed that internal commitment to Christ by being publicly baptized. Once they were added to the family of God -by faith- they showed their submission by being devoted to the truth of the apostles' teaching and to the trust that is required for fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. Their FAITH produced reverence toward God's power, reciprocity with their belongings and reconciliation in their minds and meals. The spiritual FRUIT that resulted was the total adoration of God through praise, the respectful admiration from all the people as they observed God's work and the increase of new believers, day by day, of those who were being saved.
In this message Paul showed his love for the Corinthians, seeking to correct some practices that were displeasing to God and detrimental to the church. Initially Paul REBUKED these believers for their schisms -divisions and factions- and their selfishness -disregard and dishonor toward each other-. He gave them a REMINDER from Jesus Christ Himself - His selflessness -giving His body and blood- provided an ongoing sermon each time the Lord's Supper was celebrated - as done in remembrance of Christ. Finally, Paul REVIEWED the consequences of misusing the Lord's Supper - they needed three things- -1- self-discipline to not eat and drink unworthily- -2- self-examination to avoid God's judgment- and -3- self-control to show genuine love to fellow believers.
This seventh and final message regarding children examines the goal of our parenting. We have been given a special, temporary assignment to raise some of God's greatest treasures to maturity, and an independent walk with God. It is critical that we are FAITHFUL in this endeavor - being reverent to God, righteous in our relations with men and blameless in our reputation. The head of household must be FATHERLY- his call - urging his children to the proper code of conduct- his comfort - persuading his children to follow that conduct- and his challenge - insisting that his children adopt the code for themselves. The goal for all children is FITTING - to launch them into an autonomous dependence on God alone. Their lifestyle must be worthy of the character of God - if He is their Lord, then they must submit to His reign -kingdom- and seek after His recognition -glory- and approval, above all others.
This sixth message regarding children emphasizes the passing on your deep commitment and sacrificial devotion to the LORD God. Like Israel, the followers of God the Son must serve Him with FERVOR... we must teach our children to passionately obey God's command to -hear- two things- -1- that God is unique - The LORD -YAHWEH - self-existent- is our God -Elohim - all-powerful-- and -2- that God is unified - The LORD is one- -The only God, unlike any other - three in one-. Thus, they can follow our lead, only committed to Him and loving the LORD our God in three ways- -1- as our top priority - with all our heart- -2- as those full of passion - with all of our soul- and -3- in total power - with all of our might. Our fervor as parents will guide our FOCUS in five ways as it will- -1- Saturate the habits of our hearts with deep convictions- -2- Sharpen the understanding of our children with Biblical considerations- -3- Share the truth of the Scriptures with frequent conversations- -4- Serve the work of our lives with delightful contemplations- and -5- Signal the eyes of the world with heavenly communications.
This fifth message regarding children gives us a good example of both raising them correctly, as well as releasing them totally. God used a TEST to examine Abraham's faith - He gave him three commands that would end in Isaac becoming a burnt offering. Abraham fully cooperated with God, demonstrating his solid convictions that God would provide a sacrificial lamb. His TRUST was evident when he raised the knife to sacrifice his son, simply because God had told him to. But the LORD, at the last minute, provided a substitute, a ram caught in a thicket, thus proving that -The LORD Will Provide.- Abraham's TRIUMPH brought another promise from the LORD. Because Abraham succeeded in obeying God, the LORD was going to greatly bless and multiply him, his seed, and through his seed all the nations. Abraham had released his son to the LORD, and the LORD richly rewarded him. Abraham safely settled in Beersheba.
This fourth message regarding children is on their need for chastisement due to foolishness. Loving discipline assumes a healthy relationship between parents and their children, and it has two parts- First, DEDICATE your children to God - this involves consistent training where the parents act as guardians, because the children are gullible. To -train up- is to devote them to God by guiding them toward righteousness - by example, by prayer, by words and by limitations. This process will include truth -the way they should go-, time -a twenty-year process- and trust -developing lifelong character-. Second, DISCIPLINE your children because of foolishness, not childishness. Foolishness is stupidity in action - a recalcitrant -obstinately defiant- attitude that restrains -binds up- the child. It resides in the soul -heart- of the child, and only a staff -rod- can truly separate it -remove it far away- from the foolish child.
This third message on children clarifies the responsibility that parents have to their offspring. Paul begins with two commands directed toward CHILDREN- -1- submit to your parents by obeying them - because you are in the Lord and because it is right- and -2- support your father and mother by honoring them - because of the promise that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth. Paul then directs two commands toward FATHERS- -1- restrain yourself... do not provoke your children -exclusively- to anger -exasperation-- and -2- be responsible... bring your children up in the discipline -education- and instruction -exhortation- of the Lord.
This second message on children is practical. This verse teaches that a man needs to first love God in order to love his children. A righteous man is the LEADER of his children who chooses to live a blameless life for God. His position before God is genuine, innocent and faithful - he is sacrificially devoted to God. He stands as the patriarch over his family and walks by faith as God's representative - not sinless or perfect, but spiritually upright because of the work of God in his life. His LIFESTYLE is the regular practice of following after God - the normal routine that those who know him can depend upon. His example is one of purity because of his integrity - the consistent practice of Christlikeness as a pattern of his life which is sincere and virtuous. This lifestyle leaves a LEGACY, providing the blessing of a happy prosperity for his posterity - the spiritual benefits for his sons who follow after him, walking in his footsteps.
This first message on children is foundational. Our passage clearly reveals the necessity of being dependent on GOD when setting up a home. He alone is both our strong provider and protector, as well as our sovereign overseer. Extreme human efforts are a waste of time when God is not working with us. He regularly meets our human needs when we rest in Him, even during our sleep. We must recognize that it is God who generously gives children as a GIFT. They come as a heritage from the LORD - assets and blessings in this world. Thus they help, like arrows to a warrior - his tools and trust. They bring happiness to the man whose quiver is full of them - making him contented and confident in the public square.
This forty-second and final message from Romans, closed with Paul warning the Roman believers to GUARD themselves from those causing dissensions and hindrances to the truth. They were to avoid them by ceasing to follow them- by ascertaining that such men were enslaved to their own fleshly appetites, entrapping the unsuspecting- and by accepting responsibility to be wise and innocent - knowing that relief would soon come from God when He crushed Satan. Paul then sent GREETINGS to those in Rome from three outside groups- -1- special servants of God and of Paul's- -2- Paul's own secretary -amanuensis- who wrote down this letter- and -3- special supporters who were very close to Paul. Lastly, Paul entrusted the Roman believers to God, who alone was able to GROUND them in the truth. God empowered them through the message of the gospel - the preaching of Jesus Christ, the revelation of the mystery and the manifestation of the prophets in the Scriptures. God alone is enlightened with wisdom, and worthy of all the glory, forever-
This forty-first message from Romans highlights Paul's appreciation of his co-workers. He began with a REFERENCE to Phoebe, promoting her as his emissary to the church of Rome, since she had been a dedicated servant to her own church in Cenchrea. His commendation came with a specific two-part provision- -1- that they accept her in the Lord, appropriate to her service, and -2- that they assist her however she needed, because she had been a protector of many - even of Paul. He then proceeded to give special RECOGNITION to twenty-eight faithful servants and numerous brethren, saints and churches who Paul described as useful in the ministry - he greeted them with a deep, sincere attachment - a -written embrace-. Finally, He closed this section of greetings with a command to the Roman believers to affectionately kiss one another as members of one family.
This fortieth message from Romans continues Paul's concluding remarks involving his future. His PLANS included three aspects- -1- going to Rome from which he had often been impeded, though he inclined to go many times- -2- going to Jerusalem intent on serving the saints with a gift from indebted believers in Greece- and -3- going to Spain after an interval of time, to increase their blessings from Christ. The PRAYERS of both Paul and the Roman believers formed a teamwork that was critical for his rescue from disbelievers, and for a recognized pleasure by the saints in Jerusalem. Ultimately his target was to reach those believers in Rome and be refreshed by them.
This thirty-ninth message from Romans begins Paul's concluding remarks. He explains that verses 14-16 serve as a REMINDER to the Roman believers, to bring to their remembrance what they had learned before he wrote to them. Paul had great confidence in them - esteeming them for their Christlike character, praising them for their spiritual enlightenment of knowledge and encouraging them for their ability to warn others of spiritual dangers. Paul wrote with great courage, boldly repeating the truths they already knew, explaining that the reason for his boldness was because of God's generous gifts to him. In verses 17-21 he REVIEWS his achievements through Christ, emphasizing the submission of the Gentiles in their obedience to God, and the saturation of the gospel of Christ, from Jerusalem to Illyricum. He also reviewed his ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was unknown - reaching to those who had never heard. The results of Paul's efforts were explained in Isaiah 52-15 - those who never beheld the report...shall discern clearly for themselves, and those who never listened to the announcement...shall comprehend thoroughly.
This stand-alone message is a challenge to today's church to wake up- We are commanded to do RIGHT - practicing righteousness, whereby living as blameless. Believers who live an upright lifestyle will be a blessing to their home country, exalting it to a position of honor and spiritual prosperity. Those belonging in a given nation are responsible to impact a single government, specific territory, shared economy, distinctive culture, common language and unique border. In contrast, there are many others who are doing WRONG - practicing lawlessness by regularly deviating from God's commands. Unbelievers who practice sin are a liability, creating a position of disgrace and shame to their country, and bringing punishment that diminishes its success. All lawbreakers will reap the consequences for their sin and bring shame and loss to their country.
This thirty-eighth message from Romans commands believers to be promoting each other. -1- to ASSIST them by lovingly deciding not to judge one another, regarding questionable practices. Paul declared with confidence that although nothing is unclean in itself, the loving thing to do was to avoid making a brother stumble. -2- to AVOID letting a good thing be evil spoken of -reviled-, they were to set an example for others by being accountable, using God's authority justly and assisting Christ for God's pleasure. Only pursue those things that make for peace and edify others. And -3- they were to ASCERTAIN the needs of those around them with the priority of not doing anything that causes stumbling and by clearing up the perplexity regarding the firm conviction of faith and the uncertain condemnation of doubt.
This thirty-seventh message from Romans presents our responsibility to respect each other in the body of Christ. This begins with ACCEPTANCE -favorable welcome- as we give reception to those weak in the faith -doubting, unsettled, fearful-. The struggle between the strong -showing contempt- and the weak -showing criticism- was a reality in the church. Paul reproves the weak -lacking conviction- brother for passing sentence on the strong -having confidence- brother. The ASSURANCE of each believer is personal, being based on each one's persuasion. Knowing that life and death are probable, we must never forget that we are the Lord's - our purpose, in life or death, is to always make Him Lord. Our reaction to personal differences must never result in condemnation or contempt. Our reverence for the Lord should only result in conformity to His kingdom -rule- and confession of His allegiance -righteousness-. Ultimately, we will each give an account for our choices, bearing responsibility for our actions to the Lord - live focused on Him-
This thirty-sixth message from Romans presents a general OBLIGATION that every believer is commanded to obey - our priority is to owe nothing but love. Thus, Paul's main point is that we love our neighbors as ourselves. The purpose behind this command is that love never does any wrong -harm, evil or injury- to a neighbor, so it is always the right thing to do. Understanding the command, our OBSERVANCE -customary practice- will come freely and wholeheartedly. As saved individuals awaiting our Lord's return we will follow Paul's instructions to- wake-up - realizing the opportunity to act like Jesus and sacrifice for our neighbors- suit-up - putting on the armor of light because the day is at hand- straighten-up - behaving properly and not selfishly- and wise-up - obviously display the Lord Jesus Christ and never be preoccupying yourself with fleshly pleasures. This thirty-fifth message from Romans commands believers to submit to governing authorities. -All God honoring LAWS have been given as our duty to perform - authorized and appointed from God Himself. Those who resist authority will receive discipline as their rebuke. Each believer must decide if they are going to be nice or naughty - their behavior will end in penalty or applause. But God's governing authorities also have LIMITS to follow - believers are to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's. Paul says that it is reasonable to follow our rulers, not just because we fear their -sword-, but also for conscience sake, to be faithful to God. We are responsible to them to do good works -never bad- because they are divine ministers to whom we pay deserved debts that please God.
This thirty-fourth message from Romans reminds believers that their submission is not just to God and believers, but is also to be done appropriately to unbelievers. These commands from Paul require two approaches. First, we must have a good OFFENSE where we respond to our enemies by speaking well of them, sympathizing with their ups and downs, and submitting to their many limitations with humility and honesty. Second, we must also have a good DEFENSE where we don't respond to our enemies, but show them forbearance toward their bad attitudes and actions, forgiving their sins against us by leaving their punishment in God's hands, lovingly meeting their needs, and selflessly forestall their bad intentions by overcoming their evil with our good.
This thirty-third message from Romans builds on our submission to God as living sacrifices -12-1-2- and calls all believers to be submitted to one another as teammates. The TEAM being referred to is the church, guided by Paul's instruction to be self-abased in their pride and self-restrained in their position on the team. His illustration uses the relationships of the different members in one's body that only work together for the common good. Just as a healthy body must have a perfect balance of diversity and unity at the same time, so a successful team requires the cooperation of TEAMWORK. Individual differences can be used by the coach to produce victory on the field, but the key is the devotion of each player in sincerity - showing a preference toward each other, perseverance in the game and sacrificial presents shared with others on the team.
This thirty-second message from Romans begins a radical change in the book. Paul is moving from his first eleven chapters of doctrine to how each believer is to appropriately respond to the mercies of God. First, believers are to be completely DEDICATED to God because He has provided the opportunity through His great compassion. Each occupant is to place their body at the disposal of God by offering it as a living and holy sacrifice. Only God's opinion matters as to what is acceptable, but we have an obligation to give ourselves as a spiritual service of worship. Second, we must be DETERMINED to be real in our commitment - not masquerading with an external conformity with the mirage of this world, but being renovated in our minds and being able to discern what the will of God is - profitable, pleasing and practical.
This thirty-first message from Romans unveils the MYSTERY that a partial hardening has happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in. Paul informed the Roman believers that all Israel will one day be saved because her deliverer will come from Zion and His covenant will be fulfilled. Israel would be included because the gifts and the calling of God for Israel are irrevocable. He had chosen Israel to serve Him and His mercy would be shown. The MAJESTY of God reveals His wisdom and knowledge to accomplish these things. He alone is inscrutable -unsearchable- in His judgments -decisions-, incomprehensible -untracable- in His ways -paths- and incredible in His mind and achievements - to Him alone be all the glory, forever.
This thirtieth message from Romans explains the reason that God temporarily set Israel aside. The PURPOSE for Israel's hardening was that God may cause resentment in his people - to make them jealous of the Gentiles. This reaction by the Jews came because God magnified Paul's ministry to the Gentiles - showing them successful spiritually. But a PROBLEM resulted in the branches -Jews- being broken off - the Gentiles needed to stop boasting and stop being proud in their new position - they simply needed to fear God with genuine faith that gave all the credit to God. The PROMISE from God was that the Jews as a nation could be grafted in again. The Gentiles had received God's kindness and needed to persevere in faith. The Jews could be grafted back in to their own olive tree with that same faith in Christ.
This twenty-ninth message from Romans describes the future of Israel. She is SECURE in the hands of God. Proof -1 of this fact is that Paul himself -a blasphemer, persecutor and violent aggressor - 1 Tim. 1-13- was not rejected by God- and proof -2 was that even in the bad, idolatrous days surrounding Elijah, 7,000 men had not bowed their knees to Baal. God had SELECTED a remnant, not for salvation, but to share His generous blessings and to serve Him. But Israel had been SEDUCED - although she was seeking to be accepted by God, she never reached her goal. Her insensitivity excluded her, and Paul explains why - God Himself had given her a spirit of stupor, making her unresponsive spiritually. This twenty-eighth message from Romans clearly reveals that Israel had rejected her Messiah. These first century Jews were UNWILLING to submit because of their disbelief of the gospel and their utter disregard of God's message - they were unpersuaded, unsubmitted and uninterested. They were UNAWARE of their condition though they had received general exposure to revelation and experienced the Gentiles being saved - leaving them unhappy and uncovered before God. He was UNWANTED by the Jews though He had incessantly appealed to them, imploring them to believe. Their avoidance of God revealed their disobedient disbelief and obstinate denial.
This twenty-seventh message from Romans reveals God's gracious offer to all men. Two CHOICES are presented toward attaining righteousness - the efforts of men earned by works or the efforts of Christ on the cross received by faith. Salvation by Christ was never accomplished by human efforts to bring Christ down to earth -incarnation- or to bring Christ up from the dead -resurrection- - God alone sent His Son and raised Him from the dead. God alone offers an eternal CHANGE for all men- His help for all comes as a clear message as -the word of faith-, and in a simple method by confessing with your mouth that Christ is Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead - resulting in salvation. His hope for all brings eternal assurance to whoever believes in Him, and generously appeals to whoever will call - they will be saved. Four specific CHALLENGES remain - calling requires trust, believing requires truth, hearing requires transmission and preaching requires travel. God gave His only Son to redeem and sends His many children to make disciples.
This twenty-sixth message from Romans exposes Israel's predicament. Although blessed with special privileges and promises from God, they never achieved His righteousness. In contrast to the Gentiles who were saved by faith, Israel's FAILURE came because they relied was upon their own works - remaining unsaved. They rejected God's way of salvation, stumbling over Jesus Christ, refusing to believe in Him as their Messiah. In spite of Paul's devotion in heart and prayer, Israel's FOCUS was on desertion. Their motivation included great zeal, but lacked a personal relationship. They were guilty of mutiny as they ignorantly remained independent, refusing to be subject to God. And they did not allow Christ, their Messiah, to fulfill all righteousness for them, by simply believing in Him alone to save.
The focus of this message is on the faithfulness of God. Genesis 19 exalts God who honored the love of Abraham for Lot and his family. First, He showed MERCY to Lot by demanding that he lead his family out of harm's way. The disbelief of his future son's-in-law cost them their lives, but the angels delivered Lot, his wife and two daughters by physically putting them out of the city. Second, God showed GRACE to Lot by compassionately demanding that they escape to the mountains, even though Lot sought a compromise to God's plan. God tolerated his foolish request, based on fear, by showing him favor and letting them escape by going to Zoar. Lastly, God kept His PROMISE to bless Abraham when He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, only after Lot and his daughters had made it safely to Zoar. God's judgment was severe, but the jealousy -discontent- of Lot's wife cost her her life. God put Sodom and Gomorrah through a furnace, reducing them to ashes -2 Peter 2-6-, but He delivered Lot, showing His faithfulness by remembering Abraham.
This twenty-fifth message from Romans reveals Israel's problem. The nation was UNWORTHY of the privileges -9-1-5- and promises -9-6-13- that God had given them. They were attempting to hold God accountable for wrong decisions - He was showing injustice in His character, and His choices were those of a dictator. So, Paul exalts God's ability as the one who does not depend on Moses the lawgiver, nor on the mighty Pharaoh to carry out His wishes. It is clear that God alone has authority to show mercy to the righteous or to harden the ungodly. The nation of Israel was also UNSUCCESSFUL because they contended with God, contradicting His authority to make decisions. God's ability shined as He endured vessels of wrath -unbelieving Jews-, so that he might reveal the evidence of His riches upon vessels of mercy -mixed believers-. God can be held accountable for right decisions - some Gentiles shall be called sons of the living God, and a remnant of Jews will ultimately be saved.
This twenty-fourth message from Romans reinforces God's faithfulness to Israel. Some claimed that God has rejected His chosen people, but Paul proved that they were wrong with two examples- PROMISE -1 was fulfilled in that Sarah had a son - God's covenant was established through Isaac -Gen. 17-21-. Paul clarified that God's relationship with Israel was spiritual, not just physical - not simply through the flesh, but through this promise. PROMISE -2 was fulfilled in that the older -greater- twin was to serve the younger -lesser- twin - God's election -choosing- of Jacob was predetermined, and God's calling -invitation to serve- to Jacob was full of blessings, not based on character or conduct. The elevation of Jacob was due to God's focused blessings, devotion and preference - the demotion of Esau was due to God's determined restraint, neglect and disregard.
This twenty-third message from Romans begins a series of nine sermons on the nation of Israel. Paul begins with his CONCERN for his brethren, who are Israelites. He honestly reveals his heart, exposing his heartache over their rejection of the Messiah, and his loving holdout as he wishes to trade places with them, taking their curse on him. Their CREDENTIALS reveal special privileges that should have led them to salvation. These privileges involved- -1- unique relationships - they were God's chosen, God's children and had God's presence- -2- unique responsibilities - they were to obey God's warranties, follow God's wisdom and only worship God- and -3- unique rights - they were given God's pledges, God's patriarchs and God's pre-eminence through the Christ.
This twenty-second message from Romans closes off Paul's section on the sanctification of God's children. He is confident of that all believers will be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, because of God's SOVEREIGNTY -ultimate control over all-. Though God allows free will, at the same time, He cooperates with us, actively assisting in all things for our good -benefit-. Two parts are vital in this process- -1- our devotion to God - that we are consistently loving Him- and -2- our direction from God - that we are daily being invited to serve Him. The goal of this relationship is conformity to His Son - transformation of our souls toward Christlikeness. This process confirms our SECURITY in Christ - we can never lose our salvation because of Him. This is seen in three ways- -1- the verdict - that God is for us, so who can be against us- -2- the vindication - that God has justified us, so who can bring a charge to condemn us- and -3- the victory - that we overwhelmingly conquer in Christ, so who can separate us from God's love-
This twenty-first message from Romans focuses on the hope of our glorification. Though facing great afflictions, the anticipation of CREATION is that it will be set free from corruption in the new earth, so it eagerly longs and waits for the sons of God to be manifested -physically unveiled- first. Creation had been adjudicated -sentenced- to vanity and emptiness in the curse - a severe limitation from its original design. But liberation is coming, when it will be set free from its corruption. In the mean-time, it is lamenting, suffering the pains of childbirth with great groaning. All CHRISTIANS also groan - though they have the first fruits of the Spirit -having been justified and being sanctified-, they groan, waiting for their adoption as sons, the redemption of their bodies -to be glorified-. Their assurance of deliverance is based on the confident expectation of salvation, and thus in this confident hope they eagerly wait on God. Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit gives critical assistance, helping our weakness amid suffering by faithfully interceding for all believers.
This twentieth message from Romans reminds us as believers that in the process of sanctification, we are responsible to let the Holy Spirit lead. Our SALVATION places us under obligation as debtors to the Spirit - we are to be putting to death the deeds of the flesh. Walking by the flesh only brings death -separation-, but walking by the Spirit always brings life -satisfaction-. This relationship requires daily SURRENDER because we are the sons of God - descendants who have been born into God's family. We are totally dependent, not fearing in a spirit of slavery, but trusting our Father in a spirit of adoption. Our STATUS testifies that we are children of God, and as children our titles give us the position as heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ. But the path to receiving this position is one of suffering.
This nineteenth message from Romans celebrates our spiritual victory. Paul points out that we have been given FREEDOM in Christ - He is our protection from judgment -no condemnation for believers- and He is our provision in fulfilling the Law -He condemned sin in the flesh-. The FOCUS of our minds must now be on Christ. Believers, unlike unbelievers, have two choices- set your mind on the flesh, the physical- or set your mind on the Spirit, the spiritual. But these choices have consequences- the mind set on the flesh leads to death -spiritual separation-- the mind set on the Spirit leads to life and peace -spiritual satisfaction-. Recognize that the mind set on the flesh brings conflict- both discord with God and disapproval from God. Finally, genuine believers will FINISH in three ways- -1- having justification because the Spirit of God dwells in us- -2- being sanctified because our spirit is alive and we are living righteously- and -3- being glorified when the Holy Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies at the return of Christ -the redemption of our body, the -rapture--.
This eighteenth message from Romans reveals Paul's personal struggle with sin, because of his own body. He had explained that the way out of bondage to the Law was through one's death -7-1-6-, and that there was no problem with the Law, because it was only holy, righteous and good -7-7-12-. He now shares that though he died to the Law there is still a battle between his new nature -spiritually righteous- and his old body -physically evil- -7-13-25-. In Paul's FIRST QUESTION, he asks if the good Law can bring forth death, and the response is an absolute no- The reality is that the Law is profitable, giving guidance, but Paul's flesh is destructive, producing groanings because it was devoted to sin. Paul was in a QUANDARY, living in this struggle between what he desired to do and what he hated. This state of stress came from his flesh, as evil was still present in him - the source of this rivalry came from the members of his own body. Paul's SECOND QUESTION asked for a way to be free from his grueling body of death - in gratitude he thanks his Savior Jesus Christ. He is now able to habitually serve God's law with his mind, even though at times he serves the law of sin with his flesh.
This seventeenth message from Romans is used by Paul to elevate the Law as holy and righteous and good - not as sinful. He begins with a CLARIFICATION regarding the purpose of the Law, as that which helped him to recognize sin for what it is. The Law's prohibitions exposed sin, revealing the principle that sin will always take advantage of the commandments to bring out sin of every kind. The CONSEQUENCE for Paul revealed the revival of sin, and resulted in spiritual inactivity. The reason that sin could take opportunity is because it deceived him spiritually and brought death to his activity as a believer. Paul's CONCLUSION regarding the Law was that- -1- it is reliable to bring separation between what is holy and unholy- -2- its requirements are always just, upright and fair- and -3- it produces results that are always beneficial and profitable toward eternity.
This sixteenth message from Romans used an illustration and explanation to show how believers have died to the law. These Roman believers were not ignorant concerning the AUTHORITY of the law - they knew that its jurisdiction ended at death. To clarify, Paul used the illustration of marriage, revealing the married woman's legal commitment. The wife is bound by law to her husband while he is living, and becomes an adulteress if she marries another- but a widow is released from the law when her husband dies, and is free to marry another without becoming an adulteress. Paul then makes APPLICATION of this principle by explaining that believers have also died to the Law. Their separation took place through the body of Christ - they were raised to new life, that they might demonstrate new conduct. Their lifelong service to the flesh died when their old life to the Law was rendered inoperative -annulled-- but their eternal service to their new Master came to life when their new life was now of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.
This fourteenth message from Romans explains the transition from being justified -declared righteous- in Romans 3-21-5-21 to that of being sanctified -separated to God- in Romans 6-1-8-39. Being sanctified is a maturing process that is required of all true believers and involves three aspects- -1- our DEATH to the old man -provided in our justification- - this includes both our identification with Christ -separated from sin and renovated to a new walk- and our transformation in Christ -being a new man and having a new Master-- -2- making DECISIONS that regard ourselves to be dead to sin -practically released from our evil nature- and alive to God -spiritually resurrected with our new nature-- and -3- showing our DEVOTION to God by dethroning sin in our bodies -saying no to the old reign of sin-, dominating the use of our bodies -saying no to our bodies being used for sin- and dedicating our lives to God alone -saying yes to His will at all times-.
This thirteenth message from Romans presents clear contrasts between Adam's sin that led to death and Christ's righteousness that led to life. Adam's sin brought total RUIN to mankind - this included- -1- physical and spiritual death -separation-- -2- the destiny -fate- of death, even without the Law- and -3- the dominion of death over mankind, even though their sins were not the same as Adam's. Christ's righteousness provided complete RESCUE to all men - this deliverance is- -1- unmerited as a gracious free gift that came in abundance to many, as an acquittal providing justification, and as authority to reign in life with Christ- and it is -2- unbelievable because of the sacrifice of His righteous life, the submission of His total compliance, the superabundance of His generous grace, and the salvation of His eternal life.
This twelfth message from Romans explains the eternal security that each true believer possesses. Paul explains that it is a GIFT, by grace through faith. Our position is one of peace with God and our practice is twofold, triumphing in- the future eternal bliss to come, as well as the present earthly trials of every day life. Our GUILT as sinners has been atoned for by the substitution of Christ's death - we were powerless to save ourselves, but He was propitious, satisfying our debt to God. Dying for a helpful man, or even a hero, is scarce in this life, but Christ showed His love by sacrificing His life for His enemies. The GOAL that believers move toward is threefold- our guaranteed rescue from God's wrath- our permanent relationship with God Himself- and our eternal restoration to God's favor.
This tenth message from Romans reveals God's gift to Abraham. RIGHTEOUSNESS was given to Abraham freely, as a gift - no strings attached. There was no place for boasting because Abraham did nothing for his justification. Though some assume that he was justified by works, in actuality he simply believed God, and righteousness was reckoned to his personal account. David also talks about being saved in the same way - not as an expected wage, what was owed him, but justified by faith when he was ungodly. He is an example of those who are blessed by having their sins forgiven and covered, and not taken into account by God. RECONCILIATION is the gift of salvation that God freely gives to men. The rite of circumcision has nothing to do with salvation - we realize from this passage that Abraham was saved before being circumcised - his faith was reckoned as righteousness. Abraham received a sign -outward mark- of circumcision as a seal -inward mark- of his faith - this proved his righteousness as he submitted to God. The purpose of his circumcision was that he might be- -1- the father of all who believe without being circumcised -Gentiles-- and -2- the father of circumcision -Jews- - specifically those Jews who follow in his steps of the faith, walking in real faith.
Our ninth message in Romans brings a major transition - we are moving from the condemnation of all men -1-18-3-20- to the offer of justification to all men -3-21-5-21-. The HISTORY of justification by faith began in the O.T., described by the Law and the prophets. Righteousness was manifested and available only through faith, because all mankind needed it since the fall in the garden. God displayed Christ Jesus as our redemption and propitiation, mercifully showing forbearance toward sinners until they were able to respond to the offer of salvation. The HARMONY of justification by faith brought Jew and Gentile together. All believers make concession when they receive salvation as a gift, apart from works - yielding all bragging rights to God alone. The fact that God is one, provides consistency - justification by faith is based on God treating Jews and Gentiles the same when it comes to salvation. Confirmation is made when the Law is established through faith - the Law kept sinners in custody, forcing us to look to a Savior, that we might be justified by faith -Gal. 3-23-25-
Our eighth message in Romans focuses on the condemnation of the entire human race. The LAW does not provide any advantage to sinners - both Jews and Gentiles are completely condemned. The first three chapters of Romans clearly makes the accusation that all mankind has already been charged with being under the power of sin. Their LIFESTYLE proves their guilt, as Paul strings together six O.T. passages like pearls- the first passage describes man's character- passages two through four share man's conversation- passage five reveals their conduct- and the sixth passage summarizes their carelessness -no fear of God-. Ultimately, Paul describes their LIABILITY because they are directly accountable to God. The result of our condemnation will be twofold- -1- the closing of every mouth, and -2- the liability of all the world being brought to trial. The reason for judgment is because no flesh will ever be justified by the Law - it only condemns man, requiring a Savior.
Our seventh message in Romans focuses on those who really don't trust God. Paul condemns the UNBELIEF of Jews, even though they had an advantaged position and the sign of circumcision... they had even been entrusted with the very oracles of God- They were extraordinary in every way, but as a nation they chose to not trust God. Though they lived in disbelief, this did not nullify the faithfulness of God. May it never be- God is the only one who is proving Himself genuine, real and blameless, otherwise He could never judge the falsehoods of mankind. The UNRIGHTEOUSNESS of men is not required to demonstrate the righteousness of God. He is holy, and His wrath is just, so His judgment will be correct - we are not to do evil they good may come. Our sin does not benefit God by making His truthfulness stand out. Thus, His condemnation of sinners is also just and deserved.
Our sixth message in Romans condemns those who think they are saved simply by being religious. All who are SELF-CONFIDENT in their personal accomplishments have taken the wrong direction. They claim superiority because of their special lineage, Law, private God, knowledge and discernment. They had strong confidence in their skill as guides, lights, correctors and teachers - but they had deviated from the truth by breaking the Law, shamefully dishonoring God and slanderously blaspheming His name. These individuals are SELF-SERVING as they misuse the purpose of circumcision. They cause division away from God - practicing physical circumcision while breaking the spiritual Law. Keeping only the external requirements of the Law is of no real value, as this only severs them from God - the uncircumcised keeper of the Law will become their judge and sentence them. Paul makes the distinction clear that a Jew is not one who is physically descended in the flesh from Abraham, but one who is spiritually circumcised in the heart by the Spirit, and his praise comes from God, not men.
Our fifth message in Romans condemns the self-righteous. Paul exposes the HYPOCRISY of those who pass judgment on others, while justifying themselves, even though they do the same things. Those who judge others in this way will surely receive the judgment of God. Paul reveals their HARDNESS because they disdain God's kindness, forbearance and patience - He seeks to lead them to repentance, but they only store up God's wrath, ignoring His kindness. The distinction is clear - the righteous seek God in doing good, but the unrighteous are self-seeking in doing evil. Evil-doers will receive distress, but good-doers will be honored. The HARVEST will ultimately come with the expectation that only doers of the Law being justified. Paul's explanation is that all men instinctively know the things of the Law, it is written in their hearts and on their conscience - God will judge the secrets of men through Jesus Christ.
This fourth message continues the third by revealing the practical consequences of being under the wrath of God. Unrepentant sinners, persisting in their rebellion, undergo three levels of God's anger- First, they are DEFILED physically as God gives them over to impurity -moral uncleanness- - this dishonoring of their bodies produces shame. They swap the truth of God for the lie, foolishly worshiping and serving the creature rather than the Creator. Secondly, they are DISTRESSED emotionally as God gives them over to degrading passions -ungovernable affections- - females substituting their God-given function and males surrendering their God-given function - committing indecent acts and receiving the penalty for their sins. Thirdly, they are DEPRAVED mentally as God gives them over to a depraved mind -disapproved conscience- - they are totally confused in their reasoning. Using their enlightenment to do what is improper, they are enslaved to a variety of sins and enable other sinners to do the same.
This third message explains two reasons why God's wrath is being revealed. First, because of the general DEFIANCE of mankind - they will be condemned for their ungodliness -disregard of God- and for their unrighteousness -injustice toward men-. Their own conscience clearly reveals that they have an intimate knowledge of God, and that they are without excuse because they have received both special and general revelation about God Himself. Secondly, God's wrath is being revealed because of their personal DISRESPECT of God Himself - they have refused to honor God and to give Him thanks for who He is and for all that He has done. The results of this irreverence toward God is that they are being seduced in their thinking -unsuccessful lifestyle-, made senseless in their hearts -spiritually depraved- and becoming stupid in their character -morally worthless-.
