We’ve only got two real assets - time and money.
You’ve heard me say this many times.
And, most OTs choose to save money and spend their time to grow their business. But, did you know there is real value in buying back your time? It’s such a key issue that I continue to work on with my group coaching program clients that I’m making this into a two part series.
Today, we discuss saying no and taking your attention back as an act against capitalism and overcoming the fear and privilege behind boundaries. We go beyond the surface and discuss real practices of how busy OTs with small profit margins can truly make this happen in their lives.

Is this the time to flip out and feel like your new biz is doomed to fail?
The answer is in niching down.

Today I spoke with Dr. Tomeico Faison, and she really blew me away in this conversation!
Do you think Occupational Therapists can only make money one way?...
Do you think creating wealth means starting one business and paying yourself a small salary?
…Then you need to listen to this!
Dr. Faison shows us that creating wealth is absolutely possible regardless of background, education, familiarity or funds, and that you don’t have to have every step mastered or completely thought out before you get started.
We go over:
➡️Her background and how she was destined for entrepreneurship
➡️The many hats she wears
➡️How she created wealth and built several streams of income both in and out of OT
➡️That it is OKAY to want to make as much money as possible, when the goal is to give back to the community
And much more.

“How do I move from insurance to cash-based clients? “
This question is asked regularly by Paid Peeps, and today we are exploring the importance of sales and marketing strategies for cash-based practices and discuss some effective techniques that can help these practices thrive.
Think it’s all fancy tips and tricks?
You might be surprised at how simple this shift can be - and how OTs are especially primed for this occupation-based messaging.

As an OT business owner, it can be challenging to decide when and who to hire first!
(We have a podcast on that, btw. Click here to listen!)
Most OT founders will inevitably hire a contractor first. Contractors are typically paid a flat fee, pay their own taxes and have more flexible working hours and project timelines. Plus, if you’re worried that you won’t have the business to provide them (think Feast and Famine of clients any given month), then contractors seems much safer.
Once you hit $100K and over, are in the growth and scale phase of your business and team leadership, I recommend you take an in depth look at hiring employees.
I know it’s scary.
But there are major advantages to your company, including utilizing Key Performance Indicators to ensure the growth of the employee and the company.
Listen here to take this common topic from overwhelming to “ok, ok. It’s starting to make lots of sense!”
Should you start paying for ads?
We’ve all seen them, we’ve clicked on them, but will they work in YOUR OT business?
Let’s face it - you’d use them, if you could be clear on a) how they’re different than organic marketing b) what type of strategy you should use and c) if they work! Because, you don’t want to be left in the dust.
And, as an OT you are the master of keeping your expenses down - but giving in services, trying to connect with MD offices and meeting with other health care practitioners for marketing leads takes a ton of time and hustle.
What’s the cost of paid advertising, how do I run them and is it worth all the fuss for an OT?

Particularly, women and helpers, many of whom are responsible for huge "to-do" lists in their homes, their communities and their OT businesses. I have strong feelings on this one!
(We weren't allowed to use the word "hate" growing up - and yet here it is in my podcast? You know I have thoughts!)
The term side hustle has got to go.
You know the world has changed, and idealizing over working no longer has a place in entrepreneurship.
The current economy and ambition has changed for women post pandemic, and it's time to stop glorifying "go go go" and focussing on sustainability.
Does adding MORE to your already MASSIVE to do list fill you with dread? Want to learn how to start, grow and scale your OT biz in a modern and consistent way?

Keep it simple.
That’s how to avoid being overwhelmed by your own systems.
As a business owner, you’re flooded with information, ideas, systems, platforms, and products.
Shiny object syndrome is reeeeeeeeeeal when running a business. (It’s also exhausting.)
Do you want to know the two — very simple — productivity systems I use to keep my business moving in the right direction?
They’re also easy to jump back into every time I get off track, which is a huge win for visionaries like you and me!

“My favorite part of starting a business — policies, procedures, recruitment, and HR paperwork!”
Said no OT… ever.
Does thinking about HR make your eyes glaze over? 👀
Me too. HR is not my superpower — which is why this is NOT a solo episode.
Instead, you’ll hear from a small business HR expert. She filters through the fluff, simplifies the language, and helps you (and me) understand what we need to do as small business owners.
You can protect your business, mitigate risks, and create a mighty, energized team by implementing a few simple HR practices.

The other day I was out with a friend, trying to relax after a demanding week.
I was given the menu…
…and I realized I couldn’t make one more decision.
Not one.
How do you run a business when you hit a wall like this?
Running businesses, managing families, juggling jobs, investing in relationships, and everything else you deal with daily is exhausting.
More than ever, I’m grateful for this supportive OT community.

This week’s podcast brings a totally different perspective on starting a business.
I’m joined by an OT who grew a successful business despite hearing — repeatedly — that there’s no way it would work.
💥 She pitched a business collaboration idea — they shut her down.
💥 She spoke with another OT about her idea — she was told, “Mental health OTs can’t do that.”
💥 The marketplace for her services didn’t exist — she was the first to try.
💥 She didn’t have a guide — she learned by trial and error.
💥 The currency conversion means she pays a LOT in USD for online platforms.
Despite all these roadblocks, she started an OT business that fits her lifestyle and changes lives.
Are you curious about how she overcame — and what advice she has for you? It’s all in this week’s episode. Enjoy!

How do you find them?
What tasks will they do and what’s their title?
How do you interview & what should you look for?

You started your business to gain time, increase your income, and have a more significant impact on the lives of your clients…
… but what happens when you want — or need — to take extended time off?
I’m not just talking about taking a 3-day weekend.
I’m talking about maternity leave, caring for aging parents, moving across the country, or dealing with your own health challenges.
Or maybe your dream is to sail around the world, but your business would never survive without you — yet.

It’s brilliant — and client-centered. OTs are pretty dang phenomenal.

Carlyn has a powerful message for OTs who are stuck, overthinking, and feeling inadequate.
So if you’ve EVER encountered a challenge or felt inadequate, this episode is for you. (And if you’ve never struggled with this, I’d love to know your secrets!)
“If we give ourselves permission to do the things we’re not good at we will grow tremendously. If we only do the things we're really good at we will stay the same.” — Carlyn

This week’s podcast highlights an OT who started out just like you.
A clinician who was doing the typical OT thing — exploring her interests and diving deeper into a treatment modality she loved.
She also wanted more — more flexibility, more income, and more impact! (sound familiar?)
And she didn’t have an easy road while building her business, in fact life seemed to throw a whole truckload of lemons at her all at once.
She could have quit. Many of us would have… but she took one little step at a time, and just— kept—going.
The OT I’m talking about is Cheryl Albright of Soul to Soul Yoga.
You won’t believe everything she had to juggle while she was building her business! And she’s sharing her secrets for surviving through it all!

So I did a thing… a pretty darn expensive thing. And even though it was scary, I don’t regret it a bit.
You know I’m transparent about my business and money – I can’t be shy about money with a brand like OTs Get Paid!
So – this week I’m dishing all about why I joined a Powerhouse Mastermind. Let me tell ya, it was a BIG investment!
OTs Get Paid has taken off over the past year, and I knew I needed to keep the momentum going without being run over by it. (If you have a business you know what I mean. Nobody wants to be steamrolled by their business.)
I believe what I teach, and I’m walking alongside you as I push myself to continue to refine and grow during this entrepreneurial journey.
What got me here won’t get me to the next level.
I needed a challenge, accountability, and a million dollar squad so I can continue to bring even better resources to the OT community – and that’s exactly what I got by joining a Mastermind.
In this episode, I also share a bit about the upcoming OTs Get Paid Mastermind opportunity. It’s certainly not for every OT entprepruner… but as you grow and scale your business you’ll understand the power behind finding your own million dollar squad.

I’ve noticed a double standard – and I’m calling it out. It’s normal for chiropractors or dentists to sell a practice, right? It’s an asset, so it can be sold…
But why doesn’t this happen with OT clinics? Is this even a thing for OTs?
Why does every aspiring OT business owner have to start from scratch? And if you’re moving away from a business, you just have to close it and get nothing for all your hard work?
I’m saying – IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE.
OT businesses are valuable. It’s time to normalize buying and selling them just like any other business. There’s value in starting with something, rather than starting from nothing.
This week, I’m joined by Nicole MacLean who is the new owner of my former clinic – Spring OT! This episode isn’t just about our story though…
It’s about bringing a new perspective, a shift in our field, and a deeper look into the true value of each and every OT business – including the business YOU are creating! Seriously – even if you’re not planning to buy or sell a clinic, this episode is worth your time.
We also discuss the struggle that so many OTs face – wanting more (time, money, growth, impact…) but being SO limited by the traditional systems.

When you struck out on your own to start your business, did you try to pinch pennies and spend the absolute bare minimum?
Maybe you looked at the online programs, communities, and coaching and thought – “Pfft, I don’t need that junk, who are these ‘experts’ anyway?”
If that sounds like something you’d say, let me tell ya – you’re not the only one.
This week’s podcast guest, Krista Frahm, is an OT who stepped out of patient care and into copywriting. She tried to start her business using only freebies, grit, and problem-solving.
You can probably guess how that worked out… or didn’t.
Let’s just say she went from supreme skeptic to solid believer – all because of the wide array of benefits of coaching.

Are you creating your business so you can gain more time, more money… or more freedom?
I’ve noticed a theme running through the OTs Get Paid Facebook group, my DMs, and even in the 100K Club coaching program.
Your revenue is tied to your time.
And you can’t step back long enough to work on your business (either by yourself or through coaching) because your income immediately drops off when you take your foot off the gas.
I feel this in my bones, and it inspired this week’s podcast, along with a joy-sparking opportunity that came my way.
This time-money trap keeps so many OTs stuck in hustle-mode and short of your income goals. It’s something I’m determined to help you overcome.
OTs deserve more time, money, AND freedom gosh darn it!

Which comes first for your business – clients or a website?
I’m taking a stance in this week’s podcast. It may not be what you’re expecting from a conversation between an OT Coach and someone who writes websites for a living.
Jenny is an OT that jumped into the deep end of entrepreneurship when she realized her clinic schedule would prevent her from signing her kids up for swim lessons. She broke out of the traditional track and is now an OT getting paid as a copywriter. She uses her OT knowledge and love of problem-solving to write websites – for other OTs!
Branding is so much more than your logo and colors – really check out the wording and tone woven consistently through my website.
It’s brill. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. It reflects who we are and what we stand for.

What makes your OT business so unique and valuable that your clients stick like glue and refer their friends?
FYI, this can’t be your answer:
“We provide individualized service and really care for our clients.”
Womp Womp.
I’m just telling you straight.
All OTs are caring and individualized – that’s not what makes you special.
You need to dig deeper – because I am utterly certain there’s something more that turns your clients into lifetime fans.
This week’s OTs Get Paid podcast gives you a framework and clear steps to clarify the ACTUAL unique value of your OT business.

Your business is always on your mind, right?
Whether you’re an Underpaid Therapist with a Business, a Feast or Famine Owner, or a Money to Spare CEO – you’re constantly faced with decisions.
Taking time to slow down and think is the work that drives your business to the next level, and helps you avoid the dreaded shiny-object syndrome.
One of our core values here at OTs Get Paid is, “We Walk Alongside.” We’re not afraid to share and grow with you.
Let me tell ya – we don’t have it all figured out either. One thing I do know is that transparently sharing our journey tends to help other OT business owners.
That’s why this week’s podcast episode is about how I slowed down so we can speed up down the road.

You have a great idea, plus the clinical skills to make it soar. You’ve even tested it out once or twice…
But – you don’t even know where to start!
I’m guessing you do what every good OT does – more research.
Read more books, ask more questions, and think about your idea some more.
Now you have more ideas – and more overwhelm.
Morgan bravely joined me live in the OTs Get Paid Facebook group for laser coaching, and the content was so applicable, we knew we had to turn it into a podcast and share it with even more OTs.

I hear it over and over again… OTs feel stifled by the insurance-dictated scope of practice.
I’d even wager that this narrow treatment scope is a primary cause of burnout in OT. (You can probably relate?)
💥 OTs are made for so much more!
More than ADLs
More than handwriting
More than 60 minute, weekly sessions
OTs have the perfect blend of knowledge and skills to improve people’s lives like no other profession… but breaking past the insurance barrier is a beast!
If you can relate (and I bet you can), then you’ll love this week’s episode of the OTs Get Paid Podcast.
Jill Garaffa joins me to share how she entered the field of OT full of passion, but quickly became frustrated with the limitations of insurance.
Jill’s path into a fulfilling, OT-based coaching career will certainly surprise you! (I’m hoping it lights a fire under you as well — giving you the courage to think bigger for yourself!)

This episode is a must-listen for every OT business owner - no matter your setting or stage of business growth.
This week, we discuss how to identify your ideal client avatar, and research them to create a thriving business you love.
Darcie Jaremey MSc CPE of ErgonomicsHelp.com joins me on OTs Get Paid to share her wealth of knowledge and passion on ideal clients and messaging for success.
Here’s a bit of what you’ll learn in this episode:
Researching your ideal client and putting their words into your messaging attracts the clients who need your services and allows you to sell them solutions to their problems.
“You could be the best thing in the world since sliced bread, but if they don’t know you exist, it’s useless.” -Darcie
This circles back to a concept we believe strongly at OTs Get Paid – Sales don’t have to be sleazy!
Darcie also shares how she realized it was time to niche down and stop doing ALL the things in her business. If you’re still doing everything, this episode will give you the perspective shift you need to deliver better services with less exhaustion – and earn more at the same time!
How to connect with Darcie:

It’s here! The deep dive into my 2021 goals and strategy – Part Two. The wins, the misses, and the lessons learned. If you missed part one, swing back to S2 E16 and listen!
I’m doubling down to create a business that serves my audience well AND provides more peace in my own life – listen and learn how.
This week’s episode of OTs Get Paid covers two focus areas in my 2021 strategic plan: Operations & Marketing.
Having a strategic plan allows you to easily review the year and reset/realign goals to keep your business moving forward.
I reviewed a year’s worth of CEO reports (my weekly reflections) and added in some common questions.
Some highlights are:
Side Note and support for anyone who’s in a similar spot:
Being a single parent to young adults during a pandemic, running businesses, selling a business, and having an unanticipated and difficult event all wove together to make for an incredibly tough year.
Reflecting on all of this helped me find this year’s word: Kindness.
Kindness to myself in all areas to allow healing, growth, and peace.
In order to keep serving the female OT entrepreneurs that I’m so passionate about, I have to take care of myself and be kind. I’m willing to bet MANY of you can relate.
I challenge you to incorporate kindness to yourself into your 2022 intentions as well.

Do you use a strategic plan to reflect on your year and assess your progress? If not – it’s time to start!
In this episode, Trish reviews where her businesses were at the beginning of 2021, then recaps the year with a focus on two areas of her strategic plan – financials and product development.
She also discusses how to make your business a money-making machine without “pulling all the levers” and exhausting yourself.
Trish compares her goals vs the reality of 2021 in these areas:
Some goals were met, some were modified, and other goals were missed.
If you didn’t meet your goals this year, you’re not alone – it’s part of running a business and a learning opportunity.
Having a strategic plan and defined goals allows you to assess your progress and decide where to focus your energy to make your business the money-making machine it’s meant to be.

"How do I set my prices for this?" is one of the most common questions that every OT business owner asks me. Which is good, because pricing is the #1 lever that influences your profit.
