The Ghost Furnace - Episode 164 "Lost & Found"

On this week's episode, we share a recent family story with a happy ending, to try and reset the vibe on some of the darker content we've had this summer. There is something about things coming in threes. When it comes to the paranormal, it's no different. Often times when we have recurring sightings, multiple witnesses, angels, or synchronicities, it does FEEL like an accumulation of assurance is happening that what we are experiencing is really happening the way we've imagined. Regardless of the accuracy of our assessment of the mechanism in these strange moments, they do seem to turn into the best stories. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 163 "Close to Home"

This week we wander the backroads while talking updates to a cold case that has been on our minds as of late. True crime is a difficult area for us. The points where it intersects with folklore can be valuable for inspecting how we deal with tragedy, but this runs the risk of becoming too objective and removed from events that still affect people in our communities to this day. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 162 "Return to Dent's Run"

On this episode, we head back to Elk County to the little town of Dent's Run. We've talked about this little gem, nestled in the PA Wilds, on more than one occasion, but it is truly the folkloric gift that keeps on giving. This latest development brings dramatic sounding new information to the table, whether you think it helps, or hurts the likelihood of there being tons of lost civil war era gold in the hills, is up for some debt evidently. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 161 "Scotia Barrens"

Sometimes you come across a location which feels like they are in their own little world. Scotia is one of those. Set apart geographically, ecologically, and according to some, spiritually. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 160 "Black Cat Tarot Redux"

On this week's show we welcome back Dana from Black Cat Tarot. Nic has never had a reading before. So we thought this was a great excuse to give him some insights on a few questions, via the cards, but it would give all those who have never had a reading an example of how these sessions work, hopefully demystifying the process a bit.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 159 "The Keystone Hagstone w/ Timothy Renner"

On this week's episode we welcome back author, podcaster, musician and artist Timothy Renner to speak about his new book "The Keystone Hagstone: Faeries and Other Mysterious Entities of Pennsylvania" This book does a fantastic job of bringing light to forgotten stories of lesser known denizens of the commonwealth. Tim digs through historical accounts to parse out new connections between the roots of those who have settled in Penn's woods and how those cultural frameworks give us a unique perspective on the Other. This is essential reading for anyone who is interested in folklore and the spookier side of the state.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 157 "The Problem with Disclosure"

On this week's episode we look at the latest cache of UPA evidence released by the pentagon over the last month. There are a lot of documents, photos and videos to sort through, and some dedicated researchers are no doubt already pulling out the most compelling and connective files to help bolster the hypothesis that there are unexplained things in our skies, and the government knows what, and who, is behind these phenomena.... That was the story we were planning on covering this week, but after looking at the evidence, we have another conversation we need to address first: the problem with disclosure. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 156 "Dr. PA - Murder Swamp"

The week we go back about 10 years to a Dr. Pennsylvania episode which was probably our most graphic subject, the murder swamp. This is one of those stories that when we started digging into it, we couldn't believe it wasn't more known, or talked about. Which made us start to wonder, what other horrors were hidden in plain sight around us? If you like this kinda thing and want to listen to those old episodes of Dr. PA, they are still available on most podcast destinations, or here is the page. This week we are joined by our new friends Joyce, Alex, Rachel and Rebecca from Butler Paranormal Investigations. Over the last few years they've shifted focus to education and sharing what they've learned with the public in hopes of helping those with questions about spirits. This week we head to the center of the commonwealth, to a unique park nestled high in the Allegheny plateau. Like much of the area, its history, stories and folklore are as diverse as the ecosystems they are spawned from. In this case, the anaerobic bog, carnivorous plants and dark waters give us ghost lights, phantom hitchhikers and mysterious cryptids.

The reason we are focusing on this park presently, is because last week I, (Bond), was able to attend the Hemlocks to Hellbenders Outdoor Content Creator meetup, which is put on by our good friend Christian from Hemlocks to hellbenders and held at Black Moshannon state park. We were lucky to have the event sponsored by Happy Valley Adventure Bureau along with support from the PA DNCR, PA Game Commission, Centred Outdoors and more. If you don't already support these organizations, please check them out along with folks who supplied us with PA centric goodies like Blood Rose Gettysburg, Purple Lizard Maps, and Sister Sunflowers. I was truly humbled to be among such kind, knowledgeable and enthusiastic company. I learned a lot from both the attendees and the industry professionals who were so generous with their time and expertise. I was thrilled to be able to share some of my own stories and highlight legends of the commonwealth's ghosts, cryptids and folklore that remind us we are a part of one grand tale playing out one adventure at a time.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 153 "Tri-County Terror"

On this weeks episode, we start with one of our favorite stories from a local investigator Stan Gordon. A classic from 1973 that was formative early on around the correlation between UFO sightings and other strange events and, in this case, creatures. Then we touch of a few of his newer stories that fill out the spectrum of weirdness. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 152 "American Witches w/ Susan Fair"

On this weeks episode we welcome back author and researcher Susan Fair. This time to talk about her book "American Witches - A Broomstick Tour through Four Centuries". We've been wanting to sit down and speak with her about this book since even before the first time she was on the show. This is such a wonderfully written book which adds just enough humor and levity to make it easy to read, while covering some truly dark periods of our history. We can't recommend this book highly enough. If you're new to this subject, it's an accessible introduction. If you're a learned scholar on how the label of witches has evolved and been used in our history, this will be a fun read. Either way, we can't recommend it enough. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 151 "The Sheboygan Sound"

This week we cover an almost forgotten and contemporarily maligned genre of music which had the rare distinction of burning bright enough to influence Rock & Roll greats, while remaining dim enough to fly under the radar of the average listener. For those of you who have been asking us about this rise and fall of this movement, we finally have enough information together to do this story in a way that does justice to the people who lived it, and live on, if only on record players and in our dreams.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 150 "Dana of Black Cat Tarot"

This week we are joined by our new friend Dana of The Black Cat Tarot studio in Harmony, PA. Tarot still has a bit of a stigma to it, and even if people are lukewarm to the idea of someone reading cards, a misunderstanding of the process is common. We've been wanting to do a tarot centric show for awhile now but needed someone who had the experience and knowledge to do the topic justice. Dana has been kind enough to lend her knowledge, insight and experience as a tarot reader to help give everyone an baseline understanding of what tarot is, and what its like reading for people. We really hope that if you're not quite ready to pick up a deck yourself after this episode, you'll have a better understanding of what goes into this art.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 149 "The Disappearance of Dale Kerstetter" We both have been pulled in lots of directions the last few weeks and as we gear up for a busy Spring we hope you'll enjoy this bit from the archive. On this week's episode, we harken back to a mystery from the northern tier of the commonwealth we covered back in our Dr. Pennsylvania days and mentioned in some recent episodes. Like many unsolved crimes in the area, and beyond, there are plenty of almost satisfying theories and threads to pull on. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 148 "Presque Isle UFO Flap"

This week, while looking for a UFO flap on Presque Isle, the picturesque peninsula state park on lake Erie, we ran across a strange story involving a UFO sighting in close proximity and timing with a reported bigfoot. Now, we've talked before about the correlation, especially during flaps of high strangeness, between sightings of hairy, upright hominids and unusual lights in the sky. We are fully aware correlation doesn't mean causation.....but.... While researching this case, we also come across another state college bigfoot that continues to add to the body of evidence that there is something strange happening on a very small stretch of creek in Centre County. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 145 "Groundhog Day"

"...Now on this February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of all prognosticators, was awakened from his wintry nap at dawn on Gobbler's Knob..." Every year in a small Pennsylvania town, thousands of people stand for hours in the predawn cold to catch a glimpse of a 100+ year old groundhog. They are not only kept warm by the ceremonial dancing, the locally brewed beer, the VFW pancakes and the company of a secret order of marmot wranglers. But chiefly by the hope, that this small brown woodchuck will gaze into the either and divine an early spring. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 144 "Paranormal Dictionary: Ghosts"

We often mention how important language is when speaking about the paranormal. While delving into the strange, we use terms that can have nanny meanings and invisible nuance due to just as many factors like culture, time and which spooky domain you prefer. We also understand not everyone might read as many books, listen to as many podcasts, or simply spend time with others in this field talking about these subjects. So to help with that, this will be the first in a series which we hope to take on over the next few months where we will attempt to define terms for folks. Now, we are not authorities, so if you have thoughts on a term, we would love to hear about it. Or, if you have a word you want us to look into on one of these shows, we are happy to give out two cents. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 143 "The Problem with Radio" On this week's episode we are joined again by our good friend Chris to touch on a few topics. After a strange coincidence Friday morning we wanted to talk about radios. These pieces of technology occupy a unique niche in our collective culture which stretches back generations. Since the early days of radio transmission, there has been an ethereal element which has lent itself to speculation in relation to the paranormal. Whether its anomalous operation, unaccounted for interference, or the spirits of the departed trying to communicate with us through this analoge medium, there is a lot to tune into. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 142 "Ghost Bomber" In January 1952, a US Airforce B-25 bomber had some sort of issue and ended up in the Monongahela river during rush hour right outside Pittsburgh. Usually when we look at strange events, we are not sure IF a thing even happened, in this case, the plane certainly crashed and two people tragically lost their lives. What is in question, is what happened before the plane had its issues causing the crash and the mystery surrounding the supposed recovery of the aircraft. As is usually the situation, all of the possibilities have their issues and none of them totally make sense. We are joined by our good friend Brendan who helps us wrap our heads around some of the facts, and open questions with the Ghost Bomber of the Monongahela. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 122 "The Albatwitch"   On this episode of the Ghost Furnace we head out to the eastern part of the commonwealth to a beautiful ridge called Chickies Rock to take a closer look at  recent sightings of one of the strangest denizens in a place full of weirdness. The albatwitch often gets categorized as juvenile bigfoot, a curious mark in history, or merely the subject of local tourism, but might this small creature be hiding some large revelations about the world around us and our place in it?   If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

This is an example of a very likely mundane, yet perplexing little happening. Do you have a story you'd like to share? You can find us on YouTube, Instagram or TheGhostFurancePodcast@gmail.com

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 120 “Western Maryland Folklore w/ Susan Fair”

This week we sit down with author and researcher Susan Fair to talk about some of Western Maryland's most interesting stories. Focusing mainly on a few of the stranger creatures reported we are able to highlight both some familiar elements along with some new perspectives. As we often find with the more fantastical side of the cryptid spectrum, the more you dig into these creatures, the more we learn about ourselves. By putting these denizens of the four westernmost counties in this diverse state in context of the past, we learn about the present.

When you have an area where so many residents live near, work on, and love the water, it is natural that stories of unknowable beasts come to the surface. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 116 "Dr. PA - Lost Children of the Alleghenies"

The week we do something a little different. Before Mike started the Ghost Furnace, Nic and I had a Pennsylvania centric history/folklore podcast that ran from late 2015 until sometime in 2023. It had a different style and format but many of the topics either informed or would expand into elements we talk about on this show. So we wanted to start sharing them with everyone when we have a week like this, where both of us are crazy busy and don't have time to sit down and talk spooky stories with all of you. So when we heard someone had recently reported a class A encounter, we were eager to look into the story. In many ways this is a textbook sighting, how that affects your opinion of the veracity of the story is up to interpretation. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 110 "The Ring in the Basement"

The role video plays in the paranormal hasn't changed much over the years. People generally see what they want, or don't want to see in them. What has changed is the prevalence and quality of cameras in not only our investigations, but our day to day lives. This week we look at three videos shared with us that seem to contain anomalies. Ghosts or not, videos like this give us a great example of why deciding what we are often looking at reported video evidence of the paranormal is still just as complex and confounding to figure out as it ever was.
