Let's talk about the set piece of almost every heist, the bank vault. As long as humans have had money, they've looked for ways to protect it.
Okay, so in the last chapter, we focused on the basics; now, we want to move on to the more advanced techniques of heisting. We can't talk about advanced techniques without mentioning one of the earliest and most remarkable devices we've ever encountered.
THE LITTLE JOKER - this is a tool we've discussed extensively on Heist Podcast because it's so damn cool. It's not known exactly who invented this nifty gizmo, but we do know that it was made famous by the Godfather of Bank Heisters, George Leonidas Leslie. In post-civil war, NYC, G.L.L. used the Little Loker to pull off some of the biggest heists in history. Including the Manhattan Savings Institution robbery of 1878 which won him and his crew the title of MOST MONEY EVER STOLEN. $2.5 million dollars, calculating for inflation that's approximately*
$77,000,000!
Alright, it's time to delve into the granddaddy of all bank vaults. The gold-plated epitome of secure stashes. A place so impervious that its name has become synonymous with ultimate security. We're talking about the indomitable Fort Knox, my friends. So, just how secure is this fortress of solitude? The answer is: mind-bogglingly so.
If you've managed to pull off a successful heist and now find yourself in possession of a sizable haul, your next moves are crucial. Think of it as going through a rough break up — you need to lay low, be patient, and let things cool off. Law enforcement will undoubtedly be on high alert, searching for any leads or signs of unusual activity.

Today we tell the story of Emmanuel Nwude a crazy schemer that sold a Nigerian airport that didn't exist to a bank in Brazil. It's a tale that really puts a spotlight on corruption in Nigeria and Brazil in the 90s. HEEIISST!

Today we cover the story of Dennis Nikrasch, an extremely skilled locksmith that worked as a safe cracker for the mob as a teenager then took his skills to Vegas where him manipulated slot machines to pump out sweet, sweet jackpots milking more than $7 million with out the casino even knowing they were being robbed. Dennis was an all time pro but unfortunately the same can't be said for the crew he worked with.

But you can't smuggle and forge art all around the world with out making enemies, and he has a lot of them.
Today we tell the story of the Microsoft quality assurance agent who stole millions and millions of dollars in gift cards from his employer. Think about how many sweet Minecraft skins you could buy with that!
Captain Andrew McKenna was a DOJ prosecutor in Washington D.C. A few years later he was blasting 60 bags of Heroin a day and robbing banks to fuel his $300 a day habit. Don't do drugs kids.

The Order is a religious sect that broke off from the Mormon church after they got rid of their polygamy policy. These dudes run Salt Lake City maintaining hundreds of profitable business. Their most profitable business (up until a few years ago) was running a bio fuel factory for the soul purpose of milking the government out of millions and millions of dollars. BLEED THE BEAST! HEIST!
We pick up where we left off on Part One. Mesrine is an international fugitive and escapes back to his homeland to get into some even crazy trouble, like I don't know, using a judge as a body shield!

How was he going to get it, crime.
Forest Tucker spent most of his life behind bars but that didn't stop him from breaking out multiple times, his first jail break was at 15 years old and he was on a chain gang at 16. Not only did Tucker run with a crew of older gentleman named the "over the hill gang" he pulled off heists into his 70s. Oh and he also lived two secret lives as a family man. This dude was in the dog house and the big house non-stop. HEEEIISST!
During the 90s Blane David Nordhal was the biggest cat burglar in the united states, possibly the world. He robbed the mansion of the wealthiest people on the east, coast we're talking the Trumps, We're talking the Boss we're talking...American Sportscaster Curt Gowdy? The best part of the story, his crazy commitment to his MO and the fact he only stole one thing...Listen now to find out what.
Today we talk about famous heist mastermind slash prison escape artist Redoine Faid. From stealing packs of gum at 6 to running a gang of thieves at 18 to robbing armored vehicles and escaping prison via helicopter, Redoine was a heister right out of the movies. Which makes sense because he used many of the classics as blueprints for his crimes.
F-list actor Zack Horwitz (Stage name Zack Avery) was on his way to becoming a big time actor and at the same time he was the head of a massive investment group that was selling movie rights to Netflix, HBO and Sony. Well at least that's what his investors thought, turns out Zack didn't know any one from the major studios. Zack Attack was actually just running a textbook Ponzi scheme. Come for the scam, stay for all the hilarious stuff we dug up about this ridiculous character. You may have heard this story from other sources but none of them are telling it the way we are. Today we cover the crazy tale of Pal Enger a professional soccer player/career criminal that stole Edvard Munch's Scream from Norway's national museum on the night of their Olympic opening ceremony. The coolest part of this story, the criminal organization that hired Pal to steal it didn't give a crap what he did with it. It was all a distraction for bigger crimes. HEEEIIISST!
Beirut 1976, in the middle of a civil war one of the biggest bank heists in history went down. $150 million in cash and gold was stolen, to never be seen again. To this day this highly skilled expert crew's identity has never been discovered, but after meeting a very secretive military source, one journalist believes he knows who pulled it off, and well it's crazy.
Tony Gignac spent decades pretending to be part of the Saudi royal family conning everyone from Saks on fifth, to the Beverly Hilton, to the uber wealthy people that live on a secret island in Florida. The one question we have is, did Tony actually think he WAS a Saudi Prince?
Today we cover the Mission Impossible Gang. Gavril Popinciuc ran heist crews all over Europe, and he stuck to one moral code. Don't crap where you eat. His crews never pull off jobs in Romania. And it was working great, that is until Gavril got his hands on millions of dollars worth of rare books.
Today we tell the tale of Langdon Moore a man who pretty much failed at everything he did. Langdon is what we refer to in the industry as a "heat bag" always bringing way too much attention to himself, especially when acting as look out man. His story is a great lesson in what NOT to do. HEEIIISST.
Today we are telling the story of Tommy Thompson, an underwater engineer that discovered the SS central America, a ship that went down in a hurricane in 1857 with upwards of 3/4 of a billion dollars in gold on board. After a decade of fighting endless lawsuits Tommy vanished with 2.1 million dollars and 500 gold coins.
Today we're telling the story of Sophie Lyons, one of the best criminals in 1860s. Sophie Lyons was trained at a young age to slice open rich woman's purses with a razor blade. From there she graduated in to one of New York's most successful and richest criminals. At the time of her death her estate was wroth over 750K (around 30 million today)
NYE 1987 Sydney Australia, the country is celebrating their bicentennial meanwhile at an Australian National Bank in Chinatown a crew are having a different kind of party, a heist party.
It's a story straight out of the movies that still to this day is unsolved.

Atilla turned to robbing post offices to make a better life for himself after the iron curtain fell. Oh yeah, he was also a professional hockey goalie / team janitor and once got fired for crashing the zamboni. And in heist new MATT GETS HEISTED!
Today we tell the amazing story of The Boyd Gang, a crew of Canadian heisters that really caused a rukus in Ontario in the 40s and 50s. While the gang was named after Edwin Boyd he wasn't the mastermind, just the most handsome guy on the crew.

College student Stephen Jackley made it his mission to take from the rich and give to the poor. So he decided to rob banks in order to fund he's new NGO "The Organisation." It turned out raising 100K wasn't as easy he thought.
During the 70s Eddie Dodson AKA the Yankee Bandit ran a hip antique shop in Hollywood. He partied with many of the biggest stars at the time and at those parties he did a lot of cocaine, which was the style at the time. After getting super addicted to cocaine, then heroin, then cocaine and heroin at the same time Eddie wasn't making enough money at his shop to afford his habit, so what did he do? Well he robbed a bunch of banks of course, like...a lot of banks. HEEEIIISSST!
During the 1970s and 80s the Medford Mass. police department was CRAZY corrupt. So bad in fact that the cops were pulling off even worse crimes that the criminals were. And that brings us to our story today about three active police officers (One was a captain) that pulled off a full bank heist and made off with over $10 million. Today we tell the insane life of Marius Jacob. A ship hand at 11 and a by mistake pirate at 13. Marius was the hardest teenager possibly in history. After that Marius started a crime gang / anarchist group called "The Night Workers" who pulled off heists, robbing from Europe's Aristocracy. Teen pirate has gotten be a movie. Heeeeiiistt.
Today we are telling the story of James Hogue a life long con-man that decided the best way to become America's top running champ was to steal a dead kids identity, pose as a 16 year old and go back to high school at the ripe old age of 26. Then to do it all over again at 31 by lying his way into Princeton. Also he pulled off a gem heist at Harvard just for funsies. HEEEIST
Johnny and Carolyn Williams lived a quiet life in San Luis Obispo, they liked nice meals, wine, cigars and....robbing banks! While it may go against our motto of “True Crime without the murder” this heist had so many repercussions in the world of heists, and completely changed the way police forces operate that we decided this story is important enough to make an exception. If you’ve never heard of the North Hollywood Shoot out, it’s basically a real life heat. We deep dive into the background of the two wackos that “pulled off” this heist and their stories are just as interesting as the heist itself. HEEEIST
Okay so it wasn't a mandolin it was a violin, but come on we had to go for that pun.
Today we cover a man who thought it would be a good idea to steal one of the most valuable and reconizible violins in the world. Stealing it wasn't so hard but selling it on the other end was pretty much impossible.
Michel Ferrari put together the perfect heist, he even out sourced all the criminal work to some nice Corsicans who may or may not have been in the biggest criminal organization in France. In 1992 a crew drilled into the vault of the Gota Bank in Stockholm. Inside they broke into over 600 safety deposit boxes and set off pretty much every alarm the bank had but somehow they still got away with $6.7 million. So many great takeaways from this story. It's a story we've been dying to tell but couldn't seem to find and English articles about it. And that's when our amazing listener Pontus stood up and volunteered to research this bad boy for us. Today we cover one of the biggest car theft rings in US history. Ring leader Minjiang Yang ran a crew that stole $40 million in luxury cars in NYC and then had them shipped to China for a serious profit (double the ticket price.) Yang ruled his crew with an iron fist, and he was crazy careful with every step of the process...until he wasn't.

Today we tell the story of Jordan Goudreau, a real wild boy who decided to single handedly take over Venezuela to get at those sweet, sweet oil reserves. And guess what, turns out heisting an entire nation ain't that easy. HEEEIST!
Back in the late 1800s four men conned the Bank of England, "The safest bank in the world" at the time, out of ten million dollars. All it took was the charm of a handsome rascal, a skilled forger and mastermind in bank fraud. And they would have got away with it too, if it wasn't for a single piece of blotting paper. HEEEIST!
Arther Welleslley was a british retiree living on a very meager pension. What really got him steamed up was that he had to pay for a TV license. So what did he do? He stole a famous british painting and held it for ransom.
In 1986 a mysterious heist crew tunneled into the First Interstate Bank in Hollywood, California. They got away with millions of dollars and sped down the Los Angeles underground flood tunnels on ATVs. This is a heist we've been trying to cover for a year now, it's possibly one of the coolest heist stories we've ever come across. A full Hollywood level heist, and not just because it happened in Hollywood, the story is full on nuts and is chalk full of sweet heist lessons about alarm systems and vault technology. CHECK IT OUT!
In 1925 Victor Lustig sold the Eiffel tower to an up-and-coming scrap metal dealer. One thing though, the Eiffel tower wasn't for sale and the whole thing was a big ol' scam. This also wasn't Lustig's only scheme either, he also sold a machine that printed $1000 bills. Check it out. Also in Heist News -- keep an eye out for hot tubs on the black market.

January 13, 2006. Five men walk into the Banco Rio in Argentina. Two wore hoods, one wore a doctor's uniform, one wore a grey suit and the last one wore a wig and referred to themself as "Susanna." This is the Banco Rio Heist and it might be one of the craziest, best heists we have ever covered.
