This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about our favorite new (and not-so-new) Netflix shows. These include:

  • One Day at a Time
  • Club de Cuervos
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events

“One Day at a Time” is garnering a lot of attention. It’s a reboot of a 1970s/1980s hit sitcom that launched the career of Valerie Bertinelli. The new version, a Netflix original, has a mostly Hispanic cast and focuses on three generations of a Cuban-American family. Justina Machado plays the mom, a newly-separated military vet who has recently-returned from the Middle East. Of particular interest is the fact that the show marks Rita Moreno’s return to the (small) screen. We talk about our opinions on the show.

“Club de Cuervos” is revisited … enough said.

And we take a look at “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” Netflix’s take on Lemony Snicket’s children’s book series. The Netflix version has Neil Patrick Harris taking the role of Count Olaf, the villain.

What have you been watching lately?

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about all things nerdy (from an entertainment point of view) ...

... the end of TV show "Person of Interest," considered to be one of the best science fiction shows on the small screen ...

... and our opinion on season 6 of "Game of Thrones" and the secrets revealed in the season finale ... did you know that there's a mariachi version of their theme song? (We can thank my co-host Juan Alanis for pointing this out ...

... and yes, Wilmer Valderrama was in the television version of "Minority Report" and will be on NCIS starting the fall (it somes up in conversation) ...

... and 'The Walking Dead" show creators added new characters and don't let the comic books dictate the entire storyline, which provides some nice surprises for die-hard fans ...

... and "True Blood" (on HBO) did the same thing, though not as well ...

... and, did you know that the song "Happy Birthday" was copyrighted? Well, it's not anymore! Which means that the company that had claimed to own the copyright will have to pay back $14 million. It also means that the song is in public domain, and we don't have to pay to use it in movies, etc...

... and, from the word nerd files, the words "internet" and "web" are no longer capitalized, according to Associated Press. So, even though you may not have been capitalizing them (up until now), now you'll be correct.

We also talk in depth about the importance of saving and the challenges we had in doing that in our own lives. A few of the stories mentioned in the savings conversation included:

  • Half of Americans are living on the financial edge
  • A cautionary tale about a man who borrowed $2,500 in payday loans and had it turn into $50,000 of debt

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about many different things.

Snapchat surpassed Twitter in active daily users. Yep, that means that Snapchat continues to become a major force for brands.

YouTube “celebrity” couple PrankvsPrank broke up, and they’re blaming vlogging for the breakup.

The Brock Turner rape case sentencing (and many would say “lack of sentencing”) sparked outrage. And a lot of it was due to his father’s now infamous letter.

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about the semi-recent deaths of singers Emilio Navaira and Prince. Navaira was a pioneer and superstar of Tejano music. Prince was … well, Prince.

In TV news, we’ve gotten confirmation that Eva Longoria’s “Telenovela” has been cancelled so don’t expect a new season next year. The same sad news was given to fans of the new animated series “Bordertown.”

Have you noticed Instagram’s new logo. We share our feelings on the very different updated logo of this social media giant.

When can you (and can’t you) call yourself an immigrant? If you were born in a foreign country? If your parents come to the U.S. from another country? What about if your great-grandfather was the one who immigrated here? We tackle this question and give our (conflicting) opinions.

Did you hear the news about a weathergirl in California who was handed a sweater to put on over her dress (on live TV) because the station had gotten complaints about it over social media? Uh huh. We had a lot to say about that.

From celebrities, musicians, actors, and influencers who are pretty well known themselves, Hispanicize 2016 was the gathering place for Latinos in the U.S. earlier this month. They were there to connect and network with one another, as well as what founder Manny Ruiz might argue was the primary reason for #Hispz16, to make an impact.

We were in Miami for the full week of both the first inaugural DiMe Summit, which took place one day prior to Hispanicize, and for the seventh annual Hispanicize 2016 event. The week was definitely action-packed and thought provoking.

So much so, that we are dedicating an entire episode to all things Hispanicize. Tune in to hear directly from founder Manny Ruiz about the importance of Latinos uniting as one community; a very inspirational keynote speech by Texas’s own Lizzie Velasquez, and her parents; as well as a brief excerpt from Vine superstar, Lele Pons on what it means to be a part of a global social community. And we’ll even reveal the official dates for Hispanicize 2017!

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about Juan’s first Uber ride and Sandra’s excitement over the return of “The X-Files” on television. We have an interview with Jamila Velazquez, Yani Marin, and Raquel Castro of the television show “Empire.” And we give thanks for the good things in our lives this Thanksgiving.

Uber has disrupted the taxicab industry and regularly makes the news either with compliments on the service or concerns. Juan recently tried Uber for the first time and we discuss his impressions of the service.

Before the SyFy channel, before the recent shift that has made science fiction trendy and cool, there was “The X-Files.” It started out as a low-budget show that became a worldwide phenomena, with everything from aliens and government conspiracies to Big Foot and ghosts. And then there was Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson; they were the so-good-looking and incredibly intelligent federal agents who investigated the cases. The show has been off the air for more than 20 years and is being brought back for a limited six-episode run in 2016. Sandra talks about her excitement over the return of the show.

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about Ancestry.com’s new Ancestry Mexico, about the actors and actresses we love, and a spotlight on adoption in the US as part of a look at National Adoption Awareness Month.

Ancestry.com recently added 220 million searchable historical records from Mexico, including birth, marriage and death records. These records date back to the 1500s. In addition, they launched Ancestry Mexico, a Spanish-language interface for those who want to use their tools to search their family histories.

We are joined by our friend Leticia Manzano for an entertaining conversation about the actors and actresses we love, both for the “babe factor” and their acting. Among those we discuss are Denzel Washington, Matthew McConaughey, Shamar Moore, Jennifer Lopez, Merryl Streep, and Julia Roberts.

According to ChildWelfare.gov, there are more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting for permanent families. November is National Adoption Awareness Month, when social service agencies throughout the country work to educate the public about adoption. We talk with Leah Adams-Sutherland about her journey to becoming an adoptive parent, some of the things prospective adoptive parents should know, and shares some resources:

  • AdoptiveFamilies.com
  • St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Adoption Ministry

This week on The Little Radio Show we talk with Suzette Cotto, CEO of Innovate Social Media, about using social media for business growth. We also have a discussion about baby-friendly restaurants and whether or not other customers should be more understanding about disruptions.

In the In Case You Missed It segment:

  • We remind everyone that next week is Veterans' Day and talk briefly about the Houston Public Library’s Latino Veterans Oral History Project.
  • We talk about the personal story conveyed in The Atlantic's "Young, Illegal, and Alone," one undocumented immigrant's path to the US and to legalization.
  • And we take a look at "The Latin Explosion: A New America" documentary by Tommy Mottola coming to HBO on November 16, 2015 featuring Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Thalia, Ricky Martin, Shakira, etc. and narrated by John Leguizamo

If a baby acts up in a restaurant, are the parents supposed to leave if the crying won't stop or are the other customers supposed to be understanding about the situation? We tackle this question in our discussion about "baby-friendly restaurants." The conversation was prompted by this story.

Suzette Cotto, CEO of Innovate Social Media, counsels her clients on how to build organic contacts with social media, and how to use social media to help you get your business started. Find more information about her and her business at www.innovatesocialmedia.com.
