Exploring Word and Spirit highlights the power of Truth (the Bible) and the truth about Power (the Holy Spirit). Christians cannot afford to embrace one without the other. Each episode focuses on the life-changing, transformative power of God through Word and Spirit.
In this final program on the Kansas City Prophets we explore two providential incidents that bear witness to the legitimacy of the Spirit’s revelatory work. I conclude the series with a few brief comments about those times when these men were inaccurate in their words and why we should never let mistakes rule out altogether the legitimacy of prophetic ministry.

We continue our exploration of the Christian’s responsibility when it comes to financial giving. We look closely at the opening verses of 2 Corinthians 8 where Paul exhorts giving by pointing to the incredible generosity of the churches of Macedonia who were themselves suffering great affliction and financial hardship.

A common objection to Christianity is the claim that it is unjust for God to judge people or send them to hell simply because they didn’t believe in the name of Jesus about whom they’ve never heard. My conclusion is that whereas there are no good or persuasive arguments for being a cessationist, the NT presents us with numerous good reasons for being a continuationist.

Much of the debate surrounding the purpose of tongues speech is related to what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:20-25. In this episode I unpack this difficult text to determine how it helps us understand why God has given this particular spiritual gift to the church.
So, why did God give us the gift of tongues? How does it serve to build us up in Christ? Is it possible to be edified by something we say that we don’t understand? These are a few of the questions we address in this episode of Exploring Word and Spirit.
The question before us in this episode is whether or not all tongues speech is some human language spoken somewhere in the world, previously unlearned by the speaker. Cessationists say yes, and base their argument on tongues in Acts 2. In this episode I will push back against this argument and contend that there are a variety of species or kinds of tongues, not all of which are known human languages.
It was October, 1970, when I first spoke in tongues. In this episode I describe what led up to that moment and what happened in its aftermath.
One of the more important biblical texts on the subject of divine healing is Isaiah 53 where it is said that by means of the “stripes” of Jesus we are “healed.” What does this mean? Are we to expect that every time we pray for healing it will happen, since, as some contend, Jesus “bore our sicknesses” in his body on the cross? In this episode we explore this controversial question.
In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul describes a remarkable experience he had when he was translated into the third heaven. He also writes about a “thorn” in his flesh that was designed to keep him from being puffed up in pride. What was it? Could it be that it was a physical affliction? If so, what bearing does this have on divine healing and our prayers?
What is the future of charismatic Christianity? In other words, what needs to change in order for charismatic renewal to increase and expand its influence? What particular points of belief and practice should charismatics repudiate, and which ones should they energetically embrace?
In this episode we explore the meaning of the word “charismatic.” What are the distinctive features of charismatic spirituality? How is it different from what our brothers and sisters in the mainstream, evangelical, cessationist world believe and practice? What do we share in common with all other Christians?

Why doesn’t God always heal the sick? That is a profound mystery that is both frustrating and confusing to us all. In this episode we look at the first five of ten reasons I will give as to why not everyone for whom we pray is healed.
Do we have reason to believe that the healing that took place in the ministry of Jesus provides for us a model or pattern that we are to follow? If so, what might those reasons be? In this episode we look at several things in the Bible that give us confidence to pray for the sick in the same way Jesus did.
What can we know about the healing ministry of Jesus? In this episode we explore the many features of our Lord’s ministry of healing. We look at how often he healed, when he healed, and perhaps most important of all, why he healed the sick.
If we are to be honest and forthright, we have to admit that there is a gap between what we see in the Bible concerning divine healing, on the one hand, and our personal experience in praying for the sick, on the other. How should we respond to this? What do people do in order to resolve this tension? That is the focus of this first episode on the subject of divine healing.
How did Jesus perform his miracles? By what power did he heal the sick and drive out demons? You may think the answer is, “By virtue of his divine power as God.” But you would be wrong. Yes, Jesus was and always will be God, but he accomplished his earthly ministry and performed his many miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, the very same Holy Spirit who now indwells and empowers Christians to carry on the ministry that Jesus inaugurated.
In the previous episode we closely examined all the arguments that people use to demonstrate that a Christian cannot be demonized. In this episode I examine several biblical texts that I believe suggest that yes, a Christian can be demonized. Although no NT passage explicitly and definitively states that a believer can have an indwelling demonic spirit, no text says he/she can’t! We will look at those biblical texts in this episode.
There is hardly a more controversial and widely discussed issue than that of demonization. In particular, can a born-again believer in Jesus be inhabited or indwelt by a demon? In this episode we look at all the biblical texts and theological arguments cited to prove that a Christian cannot be demonized.
In this episode we continue our efforts to answer the question, What is baptism in the Spirit and when does it occur? Here I explain where the doctrine of Spirit baptism as separate from and subsequent to conversion comes from. We explore numerous texts in the book of Acts that have been used by classical Pentecostals and many Charismatic Christians to prove their view.
One of the more controversial issues among Christians is the meaning of baptism in the Holy Spirit. What is it? When does it happen? Do all Christians experience this at the moment of their conversion to Christ, or is it something that only some believers experience at some point subsequent to their conversion? And how does Spirit baptism differ from being filled with the Spirit? Those are a few of the questions that we explore in this episode.
Love is Love! Or is it? That is the question I address in this podcast. We see everywhere this slogan. But what does it mean? Does it mean that we must embrace and affirm everyone’s belief or the lifestyle they’ve chosen to pursue? So it would seem. In this podcast I examine this slogan and instead choose to say that love is telling someone whatever it is that will most bless them in this life and ensure their eternal destiny in the presence of God. And what you tell them may be offensive to their way of thinking.
There are a handful of spiritual gifts that are mentioned in the NT but are never defined. I’m thinking of word of knowledge, word of wisdom, and the discerning of spirits (1 Cor. 12:7-10). What are these gifts? How do they operate? Do we have examples of them in the NT. Join me in this episode as we explore this challenging question.
What are we to do when we hear what purports to be a prophetic word? In this episode we explore what it means to judge or weigh or assess a prophetic word. Often times Christians neglect to evaluate what they hear, simply swallowing everything in a somewhat naïve way. But in 1 Thessalonians 5 and 1 Corinthians 14 Paul exhorts us to judge prophetic words. How do we do this? The answer is found in this episode!
If spiritual gifts are only bestowed by the Holy Spirit when he wills, what responsibility do we have? Doesn’t God’s sovereignty undermine the importance of our praying for them? No, it doesn’t! Also, how might we go about discovering our spiritual gifts? Does the Bible give us any guidance for this? These and related questions are addressed in this episode.
In this episode I explore the issue of our responsibility to pray for and pursue spiritual gifts. In doing so, I respond to those who would tell us that this isn’t something we should do, or that it is a matter of choice. A close examination of 1 Corinthians 14:1 demonstrates that if we aren’t desiring and pursuing and praying for spiritual gifts, we are sinning!
Will there be sex in heaven? You read that correctly! It’s a question everyone asks but few have tried to answer. We’ll look at how our Lord helps us understand what life in the new heaven and new earth will be like. We’ll also think deeply about the nature of human sexuality and what aspects of it will end or continue in the age to come.
What did Jesus mean when he said “Judge not, that you be not judged?” This is perhaps the most popular passage of Scripture among non-Christians. But does Jesus really mean for us to suspend all judgment, never to exercise our moral discernment and blindly accept anything that is done or said by others? Clearly, no. In this episode we will closely examine what our Lord had in mind.
What is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? What is the unforgiveable sin, and how would I know if I’ve committed it? Hardly a week passes that I don’t have that question posed to me by someone who is spiritually tormented and living in anxiety that they have sinned in such a way that they have put themselves beyond the hope of forgiveness. What does the Bible say about this? And can we have the assurance that we have not committed blasphemy of the Spirit?
Are those who die in infancy saved? There is hardly a more emotionally charged issue than that of what happens to those who die in infancy. A related question is what happens to those who are born with such severe mental handicaps that they never reach a point where they can respond in a rational or cognitive way to the revelation of God. Do they go to heaven when they die, or are the eternally separated from Christ? In this episode we dig deeply into God’s Word to see if it provides us with an answer.
There is great debate in the church of Jesus Christ over the question of the millennium. What is it? When will it occur? How important is it? In this episode I explain the reasons why I embraced amillennialism. I also briefly explain the various views of the millennium: dispensational premillennialism, historic premillennialism, postmillennialism, and of course the view I hold, amillennialism.
Christians, as well as Jewish men and women, often argue about whether or not a third Temple will be built in Jerusalem, somewhere in the vicinity of the Dome of the Rock. For many Christians this would be a sign of the soon return of Jesus Christ. But is this what the Bible really teaches? I don’t think so. In this episode we explore what the Scriptures say about where God is pleased to dwell, and it isn’t in a physical structure. It is in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ, in the lives of individual Christians, and in the corporate body of Christ, the Church.
Does the spiritual gift of prophecy undermine the finality and sufficiency of the Bible. The answer is No. In fact, we believe in the contemporary validity and exercise of the spiritual gift of prophecy precisely because we believe in the sufficiency of Scripture.
Is NT prophecy identical to OT prophecy? Since the latter was always infallible, the former must be also. But is that the case? When we closely examine the way in which the spiritual gift of prophecy operates in the NT we see that it was of a lesser authority than OT prophecy. Thus the potential for fallible prophetic words is very real. And their lack of absolute perfection or complete accuracy does not undermine their value for the church.
What are we to do when we encounter problems in prophetic ministry? How should we respond to weird words? What are the many perils and pitfalls of prophetic ministry and what can be done to avoid them? These are among the questions that I’ll address today.
Focusing in on the nature of the prophetic gift and more directly on how to deliver prophetic words as well as our responsibility to judge or assess the accuracy of prophetic revelation.
