"Join us for Experi-MAY-ntal music MAY!" We interview Dan and Jason of the 32-year old instrument-building band "Neptune" (minus Mark) about their new album releasing June 5, "Play Some Music," in which they fully commit to microtonality. These legends have been exploring found sound, electronics, and scrap metal for years to refine their distinctly jam-based, noise-inspired aesthetics. Among others, the xenharmonic instruments featured on this album include ~10-TET guitar, bass keyboard, feedback organ (in Glass Masque / Oarsmen), oscillators with potentiometers, untuned drum heads, amplified saw blades, bicycle crank arm xylophone, and electrical fan. This episode highlights a free approach to pitch by letting accidents and natural events shape one's tuning, while also making a purposeful effort to stray from 12-TET. It makes me think of Ivor Darreg. Chris Kline and I discuss his Projective Tuning Space app and constructed instruments. The app allows one to visualize various connections between temperaments, Lumatone layouts, and microtonal sources for whichever tuning you choose to work with. His self-made instruments involve 3D printing and range from flutes to ukuleles to death whistles.

Microtonal jazz extraordinaire Julian Woods shares with us his methodology for re-tuning classic standards into JI and what it’s like playing in a live band. Topics include playing songs, composition directives, microtonal setups, and guitarists’ advantages for frets, fretlets, and fretless, Philipp Gerschlauer has collaborated with Julian on his own work “Every swing has a silver roundabout” and on microtonal “Angel Eyes,” reharmonized in 13-limit JI (with mostly 5 and 7 limit vertical relationships in the triads). Some notes about our analysis: when Julian is showing the sheet music to Angel Eyes, it’s in a different key than the one in which we hear the demo and final song (G minor). Check out our episode with iconoclastic guitar legend Dave Fiuczynski. He wields a double neck fretless guitar, and plays a bunch of cool microtonal riffage for us! We talked about two tracks from “Flam! Bam! Pan-Asian Microjam!” and two from “Mikrojazz.” In “Flam,” there are a variety of compositional methods used, and the vocabulary is almost entirely derived from motivic bird calls. The uirapuru call in particular has an extremely distinctive contour. Many of these works express a desire for exploring continuums and representing sophisticated Eastern articulations. We also discuss microtonal diminished scales, the joy of smashing genres together, blue notes and sliding, pitch inflection as a player signature, quarter tones as a teaching concept, and much more! Tolkein, and features his direct text both sung, and by mapping the letters of the text to different notes of 26-tone equal temperament. Today’s episode celebrates the culmination of a years-long project with Matthew Sheeran, widely celebrated composer, orchestrator, and arranger. The album we’ve been working on is called “Acoustic Microtonal,” and it is a recording of Easley Blackwood’s Twelve Microtonal Etudes using acoustic instruments, playing monophonic lines in isolation and then being re-tuned using Melodyne. Check out Danny Playamaqui’s electronic music, a hugely expansive discography using a staggering variety of techniques. Danny conducts by-ear-tuning editing, strategic de-tuning, varispeed tricks, and poly-systemic techniques in addition to starting out with xenharmonic tunings as templates. Luckily, 4 bars a day keeps the doctor away (or is it an apple? Perhaps a lemon, or some paprika). We take inspiration and feedback from what is around us, trying to counterbalance that with boredom, motives, gimmicks, and alter egos. Most of his microtonal strategies involve tuning standard adjustments and drifts, or moving microtonal distances. Nicholas Denton Protsack’s music abounds with spectral delights of various kinds. Our talk today has a particular focus on notation, delving into the strategy behind its presentation. As we study tuning more and more, becoming less rigid with its implementation, it becomes helpful to focus on not just approximating some tunings with others, but also to focus on the broader conceptual ideas behind the tuning labels. In particular, polysystemic tunings tend to hint at the methodology of their compositions. “Firebird” (Sounds Like Things) blends aspects of biological study and music, explores the rich timbre of found objects, relies on reference points, and uses freedom to generate complex music.

This wonderful conversation features Subhraag and I talking about Infinitone DMT, an extremely exciting software that acts as the first really practical digital plugin just for retuning synths! Some examples of what it can do? Automate tuning parameters, like fundamental frequency. Shift between subsets of a tuning using similar automation. We dissect makam scales with Dr. Eric Ederer, using his fantastic instruments and deep knowledge of theory & praxis. Makam music uses a lot of different parameters to identify itself to its listeners, such as direction (seyir) and where the melody starts. There is a lot of analysis work that can be done in this field, especially in describing historically accurate modulation, and/or listing melodic tropes that indicate certain makams. Part of Dr. Ederer’s research involved recording how experts think about their own playing. We also talk about Just Intonation, the history of the oud, and “improvisation” (or not). Other amusements include the licc in Husseini, Pythagoras in general, and kings that brag about being able to bench press cattle as well as tune a lyre.

Composer-performer Erica dal Bassa is an innovator in electronic and vocal music. We explore varied experimental topics such as bytebeat, singing techniques, narratives, and microtonal effects. One way to explore possibilities of the voice in music is to use resonance to make one’s voice sound either masculine or feminine, which soprano sfogato uses to great effect! Composer Michael Harrison and I talk about his deep interests in Indian classical music (solfege, tuning, raga, and practice) as well as Just Intonation (septimal intervals). His latest piece, “Just Constellations,” is an a cappella piece sung/commissioned by the iconic Roomful of Teeth ensemble. Voice expert Amelia Huff and I talk about the harmonic series in an in-depth way! Memes, witchcraft, acoustics, production, human-voice aesthetics, and novendecimal scales are just some of the many topics we cover in this exciting conversation! In her music, Amelia uses the harmonic series in macro-harmonic systems whose notes’ frequency ratios share denominators, instead of scales built from tonality diamonds as is usually the case. Joe Monzo and I talk about lots of tuning theory and memories of events past. Comparisons are made between 37edo (alas! The episode is only 1 away!) and 22edo, as he recently completed a wildly chromatic score of a 37edo piece called “The Kog Sisters.” Joe Monzo came up with many important concepts and has gathered a lot of historical and mathematical information together on his website, initially hosted at sonic-arts, but now on tonalsoft. We talk jazz, Tonescape (lattice software), Musescore, workflow, his book (JustMusic), notation (especially of 37edo), LaMonte Young, the monzo (easy way to write primes which Joe first used in tuning theory), interval lists, high-number EDO’s as measurement tools, and, of course, “breaking the lattice barrier.”

Bill Sethares joins us for a conversation about the relationship between timbre and tuning. Research from Kevin Hobby and Bill Sethares shows us how to design strings with arbitrary inharmonic spectra. One use for this technique is to make inharmonic tunings sound consonant. An example of such an instrument is the Hyperpiano - tuned to the whole tone scale ("hyper-octave scale") but the dissonance curve of the instrument is stretched to double that of a regular harmonic string. The outcome - the octave sounds dissonant but the double-octave sounds consonant! Tune in to this episode for a lot more discussion of unusual timbres and tuning.

Dolores Catherino joins us with interesting conversation about keyboard technique, polychromatic notation, the limits of perception, and artificial intelligence. As a multi-instrumentalist and microtonal musician, she often works in the higher numbered equal tunings of 72 and 106-equal, and gave a TED talk about it 2016. We also talk about software and workflow with MIDI channels.

The Mercury Tree is an experimental prog band from Portland, Oregon, and we interviewed them in the middle of their Spidermilk tour across the U.S. Spidermilk is entirely in 17-tone equal temperament, though the band have also used microtones previously (Permutations, Cryptic Tree EP). Spidermilk is a particularly exciting album because the band went entirely microtonal on it. On this episode, we discuss the challenges of going microtonal as a successful band, what the future holds, the writing process for these songs, and, of course, the TRI-TAD. At the time of release, the band consists of Ben Spees, Oliver Campbell, Connor Reilly, and Jason Yerger. If you haven’t listened to Spidermilk already, you should (and you’re missing out)! Neil Haverstick is an experienced country/blues guitarist and composer who has been performing both 12-equal and microtonal music for many years. Neil considers himself a lifelong student and necessary teacher in the musical community - a musician first! He knows many famous performing musicians from various genres, from jazz to rock to country to folk to symphony orchestras to microtonal math teachers (many of them Grammy winners)! We talk about microfest, logistics, how tuning affects form, listener impressions, certain notable microtonal guitars in the world, and hypothetical situations of microtonality. What instruments are good for playing microtonal music and why? Can synthesizers be a useful tool for exploring xenharmonics? And what microtonal scales would be good for beginners to start experimenting? Other topics include: collecting musical instruments, kalimbas and mavila temperament, how well instruments can keep their tuning, hammered dulcimer tuning, building your own instruments (Kraig Grady, Harry Partch etc.), the importance of microtonal guitars, fretless vs microtonal frets, fixed-pitch vs free-pitch, rearranging keyboard layouts, microtonal approaches to orchestral instruments, multiphonics, free synths that support microtuning, using multiple synths vs using only one powerhouse synth, tuning files, tuning software (Scala, Scale Workshop, Tonescape, alt-tuner and others), re-tuning just intonation on the fly using alt-tuner, showing love to developers who support microtonal scales (Pianoteq, Dorico, etc.), and microtonal notation. SEVISH and Stephen also each pick their favorite “top 5” tunings for beginners, discussing notation, performance, chains of fifths, and the harmonic series.
