The BeerHealer is a story teller who wants to share the great stories of the craft beer world with you. Each episode is a half hour interview with someone involved in the world of brewing who has an interesting story to tell!
After much deliberation, my beloved podcast has run its course.
I wanted to thank you all for listening and explain my reasons for taking what may end up being, in the words of Aerosmith, a permanent vacation. So here is one final episode.
Thanks for your support; this has been a lot of fun.
Cheers to great beers!
New Year's Eve parties with ACDC’s Malcolm Young, secret concerts in the brewery with Dandy Warhols and private brewery tours with Hanson. These are just some of the stories that Jessie throws in during our awesome chat. Seriously, we both loved this one so much that we have already agreed we want to do a follow-up at some stage.
Stop reading this and press play!

I've sat down and had a few beers with this episode's guest on a few occasions, both in my hometown and his. And each time I have, I remember our conversations with a smile on my face, but I also don't really remember our conversations as well as I should. Perhaps it's my memory, or maybe it's the beers? I don't know.
Anyway, all I know is that this dude has a job that many beer lovers, me included, would kill for. His name is Will Ziebell, and he gets to schmooze his way around industry events, breweries and bars, drinking beer, talking about it with other cool like-minded people, and then writing about it for all of us other beer lovers to enjoy.
I take that back, this bastard does all of that just to rub our noses in the fact that he has an awesome beer job, and we don't. Ok, well, I don't, and he does. Maybe it's just me who is insanely jealous of this bloke?
Obviously, I am the bigger person because I have invited him on to MY award-winning podcast to share his life stories as a History Graduate turned award-winning beer writer! Lead writer for Australia'sit's most-read craft beer publication, The Crafty Pint, Will Ziebell.
Read Will'sback catalogue of articles here
You may know him as Social Media influencer, Schoonerversity, or maybe have read an article or two of his over at Australia's favourite online craft beer hub, the old Crafty Pint, where he has been writing articles for the last 5 or so years. He is a freelance copywriter, a gun for hire in the craft beer industry, and he is soon to release his very first book…The Beer Drinkers Toolkit.
Mick Wust is his name and he has sent me an advanced copy of his ripping new book, so I thought I would get him on the poddy so that I can throw a few questions at him that came to me as I was thumbing the pages of his book.
If you want to pre-order his book, go here
I remember when I first heard about the name of this episode's brewery, I gravitated towards it. Why, you may ask? Well, that's how my cousin used to describe me as a kid, Shifty…a Shifty Bloody Little Ukrainian, he would call me. He was a bit older than me, and he wasn't using it in a derogatory fashion; he was also a shifty bloody Ukrainian, just an older one! To us, shifty meant more about not accepting the status quo, always looking for opportunities, having the gift of the gab, and using that to your benefit.
He was right; I’ve talked my way into many situations that benefit me and probably out of many situations that weren’t so great. I’m always looking for opportunities to get an easy win or make the most of a situation.
So how does the term Shifty translate in the beer world? Are the Team at Shifty Lizard street-smart hustlers looking to make the most of what life throws at them, or was it just a cool-sounding name?
I’ve got no idea, so let's find out about that and a whole bunch more cool stuff with Shifty LIzard’s Head Beer Maker Man, Lee Stone.

When we talk about craft beer and the people involved in the industry, we often focus on the brewer. This is fine; I guess they are the makers of the liquid that we adore at the end of the day, but there’s more to the industry than that. Case in point, tonight's guest, his company, is one of many, let’s call them third parties, who assist breweries in getting cans or bottles in the hands of the ever-important consumer.
He may not brew the beer, but in my opinion, he is part of the fabric of this craft beer industry that we all know and love. I think I have pumped his tires enough, but I am referring to Brad Low from Rallings Labels, Stickers & Packaging. This guy lives and breathes craft beer, you may have seen him pop up at festivals, breweries or bars around the country during his travels, which he calls work, but I think that is a pretty bloody loose term…seems more to me like he is living his best life, chasing craft beer and selling a few labels on the side.
Whatever it is he actually does, he spends a lot of time roaming the country talking with people within the industry and surely has plenty of stories to share with us.
Want to know if Rallings can do something for your business?
Well, check them out.
Mismatch Brewing began life back ten years ago, I am a huge fan of their beers, but sadly our schedules have never quite aligned to allow us to record together.
A lush history with award-winning beers, a venue in the Adelaide Hills that needs to be seen to be believed, a new corporate partner in Mighty Craft, and now a new brewer...there is a lot to cover off on!

Salisbury is the site of the brewery for this episode…the Brisbane one, not the South Australian one. A brand new brewery that opened earlier this year by the name of Hiker Brewing Concern, set up by a couple of blokes by the name of Daniel Venema and Phil Sharp
Those of you looking to follow in their footsteps, you might learn something from this one. Co-founder Daniel Venema shares his experiences with what has been a mix of delays with the local council, managing the budget that doubled and almost running out of money...only to be saved by a good old working beer!
This is a great beer story! And listen in to find out how the lads have given listeners a discount code to get 10% off their beers. Listen in and then go here to use your code:

Modern Man, Brewer, Deep Thinker, Storyteller, or Trailblazer. There are so many ways I could describe Rhys Lopez from Otherside Brewing (and Evil Mega Copr) after chatting with him, but I don’t want to slap a label on him.
Instead, I invite you on a journey into his mind and soul so that you can enjoy the stories this absolute legend shares in our chat.
From roaming the globe to working his way through the Western Australian brewing scene, with a quick stop off in a cult (for educational purposes), and now brewing amazing beers, this is a fun story!
Enjoy

It was so great to get back into the podcast studio with Dave and Ben!
On this episode, we get up to our usual hijinks... name-calling, shit-talking, and high-brow beer industry analysis.
Enjoy!!
How did you settle arguments as a kid? I remember things like drawing straws, holding a rock behind your back and picking which hand it was in and the classic chant of Ip Dig Dog Shit, Too Bad You Are Not It…but nothing was quite as cool as Rock, Scissor Paper. Well, that’s what we called it as kids, maybe it was a regional thing or a generational thing, but my kids have since informed me of the correct way to say it, Paper Scissor Rock.
So glad I have been set straight; now we can talk about beer. My guest on this podcast is one of the co-founders of Paper Scissor Rock brewery, set up in an old tourist information centre in the Grampians National Park...in a town of 450 people!
This is a great story about 3 mates having a crack, and it paying off!
Thanks to Hops To Home for introducing me to this brewery.

Once upon a time, the city of Launceston was dominated by a single brewery down on the esplanade…oh how times have changed. In recent times, an army of smaller breweries has been staking their claim on the town, including one who has kind of taken things to the next level and set up their first brewpub in the CBD, Ducane Brewing.
Founder Will Horan has been brewing beers for around a decade, honing his skills as a homebrewer, sharing his beers with mates and maybe a few of his clients while working as a mountain trek tour guide. Upon making the decision to change careers, from the outside looking at least, things seem to have moved along pretty quickly.
This is the story of Ducane Brewing with Founder, Will Horan.

Fans of European brewing know that the Belgians do things a little differently to other regions, which is all right by me! Aussies have been enjoying Belgian beer syles for years in Australia; I am sure that you have all at least tried a Duvel, a LA Trappe, a Chimay, or if you are really lucky, a Cantillon.
But have you tried a Belgian beer, brewed with all Aussie ingredients, brewed by actual Belgians? You know, people who grew up in the lavish Belgian beer culture? Well, I know of a couple that for some reason, wanted so badly to share their love of Belgian beers with Aussies that they flew thousands of miles to this big brown land to do it!
In this episode, one of those people tells me why she felt it necessary to make that trip with her co-founder, Jimmy Van Eetvelde. This is the story of Madocke Brewing with co-founder Annelies Nijskens

Huge shout out to Brad from Rallings labels for introducing Annelies & I.
Way back in January 2016, I came across my guest at a local night market. Him and his bother in law, and their wives were operating a small wood-smoked meat stall at a local night market, and if my memory serves me correctly, they were also slinging beers from Van Dieman brewing. It was about this time that I was still busily writing regualr articles on beerhealer.com and I wrote my first one about Spotty Dog Brewers & American BBQ.
Click Here To Check Out The Article
In that interview, co-founder, Michael stated…
The plan to microbrew has been 5 years in the making, with everything along the way being part of the plan to open a microbrew pub!
So, that was 2016, things had been ticking over for 5 years already, and they had plans for a brew pub. It’s now 2023, almost 7 years to the day that I was at that market, and I am glad to say that
Finally, Spotty Dog, has opened that micro brew pub.
Well sort, it's something a little bigger than a microbrew pub. You could say they have built Hobart’s answer to destination breweries such as Felons, Little Creatures or Hemingways.
And sitting over the table from me for this chat from the brewery (sorry for the echos), sipping on a cold one, is Co-Founder Klimt Donohoe who for the last 10 years or so has been working his guts, along with the rest of the family, to make this dream a reality. He’s a little older than that fresh faced skinny kid from the picture at that night market, but juggling a serious job, a family, a podcast and a brewery will do that to you…luckily he has the eminem blonde hair keep him looking youthful.
Enjoy the chat!!

Sometimes in this game we call craft beer, our hobbies can get a little bit out of hand, and before you know it, that hobby that once saw you making very average Kit & Kilo beers with your Coopers Kit from Big W, suddenly sees you surrounded by stainless steel, pumping out quality beers that were once the thing that dreams were made of.
My guest on this episode, while he has followed his dream and turned plastic into stainless, he hasn’t done it on a huge scale, and that’s just how he likes it…this is about the community.
Mortdale is the location where my guest chose to chase his dream, it’s about 10km south-west from the craft beer mecca known as the Inner West of Sydney, but that's just fine, this is about community, not adding another stop on a Daves Brewery tour.
The Social Brewers is coming up on its first birthday soon, and founder and head brewer, Beau Curtis has been pretty bloody busy the last 12 months...this is his story!

My guest on this episode needs no introduction, so he is not getting one! Never afraid to share his insights or tell you what is on his mind, he is a straight shooter and that's why I look forward to our chats.
He has just released a new series of experimental beers called Sheer Terroir, exploring the wonderful world of Hop Terroir.
From their website: Everyone loves an origin story, which in this case is both relevant to the birth of our new Experimental Series as well as the origin(s) of the hops that we used to kick it all off. Terroir is a French term that refers to the specific geographical and environmental characteristics, such as soil, climate, topography, and even cultural practices, that give a certain food or drink its unique flavour and qualities. Let's start there.

Meatloaf, god rest his soul, once famously stated, “I would do anything for love, but I won't do that”. What is it he wouldn’t do before he met his maker?
Let's throw a craft beer lense over that classic rock track by The Meat...“How much do you love craft beer, and how far would you go to chase your dream?” Would you move your family 4,500 kilometres across the country to take a new role?
In 2021 Ryan Nilsson-Linne did, and this is his story!

Every now and then, I hear a quirky little story pop up via one of my craft beer news feeds. Often the stories are from overseas, so getting the newsmaker onto the podcast is a little difficult, but not so this time.
A few weeks back, I got a ping with this headline:
The Best Place For Craft Beer In L.A. is a Gas Station in Pasadena...
I was like, whaaaat? We can’t even sell beer in Australian petrol stations, so how could one in LA be touted so highly? And I thought, bugger it, I’m gonna have a crack and reach out to the owner and see if they wanna have a chat about it with me.
And he said yes!
I will let Replicant Shell founder Shibli Haddad fill you in...

On this podcast, I get to talk to a lot of people about their beer journeys. Some are short and sweet, from the shed at home to the local brewery, whereas others are a little more complicated, often involving juggling real jobs and family commitments while learning their craft. Some learn in the shed or with the local brew club, others seek out a mentor, and some even go overseas to find their passion,
Jimmy Krekelberg from Good Land Brewing has certainly done the latter. From Victoria to the UK, the Netherlands and back to Traralgon in the Gippsland Region, covering a lot of miles chasing the dream of becoming a brewer. And it worked, and he has an amazing story to tell!!

How many brewery workers do you know that have switched jobs since the pandemic?
How many crazy fools do you know who decided to start a new brewery, their second one, during covid?
I reached out to Seeker Brewing recently. I had seen them on social media and thought they seemed like they had a cool story to tell. Then they messaged back and it read…
Hey Chris, this is Jeff - originally Grassy Knoll. Would love to catch up for another chat!
Boom…mind blown!! Jeff, the drummer from another mother that I loved talking to last time, was at a new brewery. WHAT? I thought that seemed weird, knowing his backstory from episode 134. And then, thanks to my amazing research skills, I realised there was more to this story…so without any further delay, let’s get into it!!!

The list of the Western Australian breweries that I either drove past, didn't know where there were, or found out about after I got back home is long and comprehensive, and I'm now adding another to the list!
Seasonal Brewing Co in Maylands was literally 15 minutes drive from Scarborough where I was staying, and shame on me for not hijacking another day trip to visit a brewery. It’s a bit like Brewery Pokemon over that way, you’ve gotta visit them all.
My guest, Brody Watts is a little bit of a man about town in the brewing industry, having worked at quite a few of the local breweries. You say the name Brody Watts around old P-Town, and beer lovers get a twinkle in their eye.
His initial dreams of making different beers every week were shelved once the team realised that locals were the most engaged drinkers, not the craft beer nerds, and that's just the start of it...

Ladies and Gents, we’re back in the studio for another episode of the Pro, The Protege & The Hack. The last time the 3 of us got together to talk about beer, was back in October 2021. So yeah, we have been kind of shit at keeping up a regular recording schedule. To be honest, Ben and I kinda blame Dave for that, he nearly died last year, but that’s a poor excuse.
And that text above is pretty much the exact description I used on that episode back in October...we have been slack!!!
Enough bullshit, let’s get into this.

James Isacsson is the founder and head brewer of AVNGE Brewing. A talented artist, former army man, and all-around nice guy...he has been an avid listener of the podcasts and reached out once he heard the Shapeshifter episode to say that it helped him with his plans...how awesome is that!
An episode that goes off on many tangents, partially due to James' unique story, and partially cos this is my first time on the mice for a while!!

I've got something a bit different for you on this episode. Last weekend 30 odd of us went out to the White Hills just outside of Launceston to have a day out at the Van Dieman Farm and Brewery. Access all areas and a long lunch with like-minded beer lovers, as members of Van Diemans Paddock Club.
This episode is a combination of some interviews I did on the day, Will's "speeches" throughout the day, and my dulcet tones narrating it all!

So I get a phone call two minutes before show time, it's Nick from Local Brewing Co. He says he can't make our chat and he is sending in the substitute, Hugo. All of a sudden, my weeks of research about Nick were thrown out the window, not a great start, I needed to wing it a bit. Next, we start the interview and Hugo calls me Beer Head…f’n hell, this is not going well. Then, we clicked, and I am not sure that I have laughed as much on a podcast in a while...this got loose! This is a complex story of craft beer, creating change, giving back, gypsy brewing and unique ideas. Have you been to the supermarket lately? Once upon a time, the displays at the ends of the aisles were filled with chocolates and coca-cola, but these days there is a new player creeping into that space, non-alcoholic beer. And I am not talking about the stuff that you used to pick up next to the non-alc champagne that you drank at the Christmas table as a kid. Old brands in that space like Holsten or Kaliber are being challenged by a raft of newcomers, brewed by everyone from Heinken and Budweiser, to local craft breweries Upflow and Nort.Paul Bowker is CEO of Brick Lane Brewing, and they have introduced a new 70's vibe upstart to the category, Sidewinder. When retro vibes and modern lifestyles collide, that's where you will find the new refreshment-inspired non alcoholic beer from Sidewinder. With these new additions to the lineup, and a category that looks like it is going gangbusters, it seems there is a hell of a lot to talk about. Can Paul convince this Coke Zero and Lime Mineral Water drinker to switch to a non-alc beer…let's see!!If you want to check out these new beers, go hereSidewinder LifeWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
There is a point that craft breweries get to in their growth trajectory, the one where the founders have realised that they need a little bit of extra funding to fully realise their potential. That'w where we find Akasha Brewing Co right now.Founded in 2015 in Sydney’s Five Dock, Akasha has helped spearhead Australia’s blossoming love affair with high quality, hop-forward beer, rapidly becoming one of the most celebrated and successful independent breweries in the country. With a nationally recognisable brand, a stellar core range of highly awarded, eminently sessionable beers, and an expanding roster of limited release seasonal projects that push the art and science of brewing to new heights of invention, Akasha is now poised to expand. To realise their dreams, Dave and the Akasha team have decided to embark on a crowdfunding campaign to raise the required funds. They are calling it the inner circle and are very excited about how it can take Akasha to the next level volume-wise, and tick a bunch of other strategic planning boxes for them.Dave jumped on the mic with me to talk it all through. If you are interested in registering for the crowdfunding campaign, you can do so belowhttps://equitise.com/offer/akashaWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
Tasmania has a bit of a history with lagers…both of the big guys down have battled for 100 odd years to see who is best. More recently, Tasmanian drinkers have rediscovered their love of lager, brewed by the new wave of craft breweries in this state, and they are liking what they are tasting.I guess that's why a brewery such as The Albert can afford to model their whole business plan on them…lagers of every colour. I'm not sure if it's because I have done hazy’s to death, or that I'm getting grumpy in my old age, but there is something about a lager right now that I am just loving. Add the fact that The Albert has recently pumped out another favourtie of mine, a mid strength lager, and I am, in heaven! The new Albert Blue has been my beer of choice for the last few months down here, and now it seems that you mainlanders are now going to get a taste of it.Head Brewer, JJ King, has worked his way around a few mainland breweries, and has now settled in Tasmania to brew Lagers at The Albert...enjoy the chat!Check out The Albert Brewery hereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
The Northern NSW region has a deep brewing history...it's the birthplace of a little brewery called Stone and Wood, you might have heard it? But a few minutes south of that brewery, in Balina, is another one that has now been kicking around for about 4 or 5 years, Seven Mile Brewing…have you heard of that one?Started by a father and son duo in 2017, this is a truly family-run brewery, which sounds totally awesome, buuuut may have also been a bit tricky at times...we get to that! This is a great chat with Matt, where he opens up about how Stone & Wood came to his rescue one time, what he learned from his time with Dave Padden, how 4 Pines helped him understand the business, and some of the personal challenges he has faced along the way.A ripper of a chat!Check Out Seven Mile's Beers HereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
One thing I know for sure is that this craft beer industry we love so much doesn't stand still for long. Venues that start off small, blow up, styles that were once a must-have on the tap list have been replaced with the next big thing. And, as breweries mature, they tweak their business models and plans, often resulting in a re-brand.All-Inn Brewing has been around since 2012, a little suburban brewery that started out as a labour of love for its founder, Harley Goodacre. He has a modest budget and had to do whatever it took to make his dream a reality, repurposing old milk vats and turning a humble shed into a much-loved brewery. These days, those milk vats have been replaced by shiny stainless, and just in the past few weeks, the beer on shelves has also had a bit of a facelift, which is one of the topics covered in this chat with All-Inn Brewing's COO and Head of Sales, Luke Phillips.Check Out All-Inn's Beers HereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
150 Episodes...Whaaat? How did that happen? When I finished the episode with Aaron, I thanked him for his open and honest chat, and for shedding a light on the other side of starting a brewhouse...the food. Often on these podcasts, we focus on the beer, because that is what we all love. But we also love food, and for brewpubs, you aren't going to be too successful if you can't serve both.So anyway, that's a long way of saying this chat was really interesting to me and a bit of a breath of fresh air. This is the story of the Margaret River Brewhouse, a little place 3 hours south of Perth in the middle of some of the most breathtaking scenery in this country. It's a story of 3 guys and their partners who had a dream and how they navigated their way through the tough times, the successes, and the decision of what to do once they had achieved the goal the 3 of them set out when they started.Check out MRB's beers hereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

An old mate of mine used to say, "every day is a school day", and this episode proved it to me once again. On this episode, I have invited Sean Johnson, mead maker at Erosion Meadery and Brewery in Western Australia, to give us a crash course in Mead, Mead 101 if you likeUntil I did this interview, I had absolutely no clue about Mead. How about you? To be honest I thought it was just something the Knights of the Round Table drank, because beer hadn't been invented. But then I think I saw them drinking it in that documentary about dragons, Game of Thrones, so thought it must be real! She is one of the new breed of talented young beer lovers who are entering the craft beer industry, bringing fresh new ideas and a positive attitude that is rather infectious. The industry is getting older, and so are the people who work there. Change is coming fast for this industry, and I, for one, think that if the industry's future is in the hands of people like Bronte O'Donoghue, everything is gonna be great!Described as an old soul or wise beyond her years, she is quickly blazing an impressive trail through the industry. She started her career at Western Australian OG Brewery, Feral, and now she is Head of Marketing for another iconic brewery, Eagle Bay Brewing Co.She is a storyteller by trade, and a natural on the mic, two traits that make my job as an interviewer so easy!Thank you to another outstanding Western Australian, Pia Poynton, for the heads up about this fantastic young marketer.Enjoy the chat!Shop for Eagle Bay Brewing Co. I love hearing beer drinkers argue about which state or region has the best craft beer in the land. Marrickville, Margaret River, Collingwood, Hobart, South Coast NSW, The Gold Coast, Adelaide Hills...every state has a craft beer mecca these days, and it gets me bloody excited!Personally, I feel like, in recent times, Victoria has really been shouting loudly about having some of the best beer around. Names like Brick Lane, Hawkers, Fixation, Bodriggy, Deeds, Molly Rose, Hop Nation, and Kaiju...the list goes on and on. And recently, I fell across another one to add to that list, Braeside Brewing. About 50 minutes South East on the Nepean is where you will find this little brewery, situated sort of on the banks of the Mordialloc Creek. I've never been there, no idea what the creek looks like, but it sounds charming,Celebrating their second anniversary recently, Braeside Head Brewer Charlie Thompson joined me to tell me all about the charm of that little creek...and more!Shop for Braeside Brewing beers hereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

If you have been listening for a while, you know I am a proud Tasmanian and I like to be able to tell the stories from down this way when I can. This one has been coming for a little while, the boys and I have had a bit of back and forth, trying to align our schedules. But, with a cancellation in my ultra-busy weekend social calendar, I was able to find my way to the "Valley of Love" to pay the lads from Welcome Swallow Brewery a visit.30 odd minutes north of Hobart in the Derwent Valley, in the historic town of New Norfolk, that was the location for this chat. At 10:30 am on Sunday, I sat down and shared a "Morning tea" beer with the founders of the Welcome Swallow brewery and taproom, Nigel Graham and Elias Eichler, to find out more about them.Welcome Swallow Facebook PageBuy BeerWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
I was so happy to get a message from Nigel Ayling this week. He asked if he could jump on the podcast and record a Short Cut to tell everyone about a project he is involved with. You may know him as the founder of the Facebook Group, We Love Craft Beer, but in his working life, he is a marketer and always looking to get involved with beer-related projects. His latest project is the South Coast Ale Trail, and it is a ripper, so I was only too happy to help him promote it!South Coast Ale Trail FBSCAT WebsiteEmail SCAT💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥Short Cuts are anything that you, me, we, the craft beer community, want them to be. Hop Products Australia and Beer Cartel have teamed up again for another mixed 12 pack of amazing beers, made with some of the best breweries in the land! This time, instead of featuring a single hop (Eclipse last time), they are showcasing a new hop technology, LUPOMAX. LUPOMAX pellets come in a whole heap of different varieties (click below for more details) and the brewers have had a blast designing beers to showcase the individual hops characteristics that have been turned up to THE MAX with the LUPOMAX process.I made my way to Hops HQ to catch up with OJ in the boardroom.Order the Beer Cartel Lupomax Mixed 12 pack hereFind out more about Lupomax hereCheck out the latest news from HPA hereSupport the breweries who have brewed a beer for the pack:Akasha BrewingBatch BrewingBlack HopsDainton BrewingHobart Brewing CoHop Nation BrewingLittle Bang BrewingOne Drop Brewing CoOtherside BrewingSydney BreweryWhite Bay Brewing💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥Short Cuts are anything that you, me, we, the craft beer community, want them to be. This conversation started months ago at GABS festival in Melbourne. Right before I made a quick escape as the city went into its 50th lockdown, I met a bloke by the name of Nathan Munt and he was peddling some pretty cool beers at his 3x3 in Geoffs Shed. If I remember correctly, it was his Barrel Aged Belgian Tripel that I tasted that day, which was delicious, and I made a mental note that I needed to get him on the podcast.Fast forward 6 months or so, Melbourne is finally out of that lockdown and things are racing ahead, and that mental note has come back to the surface...buried by many beers back at GABS, and clearly forgotten by me until I saw something pop up in my Insta feed to remind me. Seriously, I need a personal assistant to help me keep track of potential guests. But anyhooo, we made it in the end and I was really keen to hear more about Nathans brewery, King River Brewing, situated in the Victorian High Country, where, the air is clean, the food is amazing, the people are welcoming and the beer is fresh. So finally, here is our chat!King River BrewingWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

Ladies and Gents, we’re back in the studio for another episode of the Pro, The Protege & The Hack. The last time the 3 of us got together to talk about beer, was back in May as we did a follow-up to our Christmas special. So yeah, we have been kind of shit at keeping up a regular recording schedule. To be honest, Ben and I kinda blame Dave for that, he nearly died this year, but that's a poor excuse. And it’s probably not gonna get much better, cos Ben’s wife just had a baby, so he is going through all that kid bullshit for the first time. The stories about the awesome craft beer industry I share on this podcast are wide and varied. For the most part, they are celebrating what is awesome about the industry or sharing stories of people chasing their dreams and having a great time doing that. This episode with Brad Bown from Left Barrel is a little different. It's one of how things aren't always easy, especially with a pandemic and bush fires throwing you a curveball. But, it's not all doom and gloom it's just telling it like it is, and I thank Brad for sharing his story with me and hope that others get a bit out of it.If you want to help out Left Barrel, jump on and buy a few beers from them.https://www.leftbarrel.com/shop Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

Well, that is, in between building a house, working in their regular jobs, and navigating yet another Melbourne lockdown.Chelsie and Josh are such a fun couple, and in this chat, we dive in and out of a whole bunch of topics:* Josh's technique for blending * The power of Chelsie's "Punters Palate" * The opportunities to tell great stories within the magical world of wild ales * And, the power of a peer review system that doubles as an exclusive beer club!

At the intersection of Abbotsford and Collingwood is no less than 6 breweries all within a 2 kilometre radius. Tell me if you've heard this before...two mates go to Oktoberfest and dream of starting a brewery. A pretty common occurrence, but not too many take it seriously once the hangover has cleared. Blake and Grant had a dream, and a bit of a plan, but I bet neither of them had any idea of what the journey would hold for them.Try to keep up with the pace in this one as Blake openly shares the ups and downs, twists and turns of this coming of age tale of a couple of lads from Dromana. Along the way, they add business partners, buy some stainless, face covid uncertainties, and find a couple of investors in the form of Mighty Craft who believe they could one day be a national brand.I look forward to having a beer with Blake one day, cos drinking an IIPA with him over Zoom wasn't enough...even if he was shouting the beers!Jetty Road BreweryWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

Way back in 2018, when times were a little simpler, a couple of musicians from Bondi decided they would do that little Aussie thing we call “having a crack” and decided they would start their own brewing company. The Beer Healer is Live and on the road for this episode, which is great fun but provides a few little challenges, as you will hear! There is a new venue in Tasmania, and it is getting people a little bit excited. Why? Well, it's been a while in the making, and as the building took shape, it has piqued peoples interest. I have even heard the words, Destination Venue being thrown around...okay, that was actually me using that term! Anyway, I’ve been to a few breweries in my life, and I have to say that Deep South Brewing, a few minutes walk from Hobart’s CBD, is right up there. For the most part, the trend in recent years has been to keep it pretty simple with taprooms at new breweries...concentrate on producing great beer, get creative in building a bar to save some cash, and feed the patrons with a food truck. Not Deep South Brewing, the place is schmick...12 taps of beer from the brewery, and a few friends, a serious wine list and the food...well, it's bloody delicious. This new venue is the brainchild of a few Tassie mates, and one of them happens to be an OG of the Tassie Brewing scene, ex Moo Brew (twice) and Temple Head Brewer, Dave McGill, who joins me for this episode!Deep South BrewingDeep South InstaWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

This episode is all about relationships. Mike has worked his way around the industry and made a lot of friends. One of his friends, Krish Fotedar (@Titanstins) introduced Mike to me and we quickly realised that we knew a few of the same people from around the Sydney brewing scene.Mike has worked for Batch Brewing, Archie Rose Distilling, Beer Cartel, and Stewart Brewing and Edinburgh Beer Factory in Scotland...he's paid his dues! Sometime before Covid smashed us, Mike and his Dad, Mark decided to jump in the deep end and start Bracket Brewing in Alexandria, just on the southern outskirts of Sydney. With many friends in and around the area, Mike has leaned on them to help him through some tough times and has come out the other side with a nice range of ever-changing beers that are starting to make people sit up and take notice. If you haven't heard of Bracket Brewing, listen up, cos Mike is a ripping guest. Slow Lane Brewing is a bit of throwback...a bit of what's old is new, old-world beers with a modern twist. If you didnt know better you would think Slow Lane's beers were brewed in a beautiful old stone brewery in the rolling hills of Europe, not in a warehouse in an inner-city industrial suburb of Sydney! But that’s Slow Lane Brewing for ya, they take the old, and make it new again, and they are doing it really well. From Europe to Botany, with a modern interpretation, and not afraid to push the boundaries. Mixed fermented sours, barrel ageing, and open-top fermenters, these aren't your run of the mill beers. This is the story of a husband and wife duo teaming up to follow a dream, which makes it even more awesome. Geoff and Richard have been at this beer thing for a while, so I thought it would be great to have a chat about what changes they have seen in the industry and how they as a business have moved with the times to stay on top of things. Packaging formats, the rise and plateau of US Craft Beer, Big Beer trying to beat them at their retail game and fads that have come and gone.!Beer Cartel is in the middle of a crowdfunding campaign, so of course, the boys wanted to spruik that, but I made them take a walk down craft beer memory lane before I let them pitch the deal!! ;)If you are interested in investing, you can find more info here: https://www.birchal.com/company/beercartelOr you can buy great craft beer here: https://www.beercartel.com.au/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on your phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player
If you are a craft beer fan, I reckon you would know the name Stirling Howland, or at least have seen his face. He is the co-founding Brand Director for Balter Brewing Company, a brand that continues to dominate the craft beer scene in Australia. As a fellow marketer, I look up to this bloke, because he is one of the most talented marketers I have met in my career. As a beer lover, I am insanely jealous of what he gets to do and call it work. He does it so damn well, and it always looks like great fun. I'm sure there are serious times, but what I see in his videos makes it look like a constant good time with mates.Forgive me if this one isn’t all about beer, but there were some other things I wanted to cover with Stirl, including:* His partner in film, Mike Calvino; * The art of story telling and how it moves him; * Why Balter bucked the trend in selling to CUB; * Blue cheese, Dorito's and Purple tinnies; * Influencer marketing; and * Getting a bit serious, checking in on each other.
I thoroughly enjoyed this chat with Stirl, he really opened up and I just got to sit back and enjoy the show!Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click the link on phone and scroll to the bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on your favourite podcast player

Up until a few weeks ago, I knew nothing about my guest on this episode. One day a mad keen craft beer lover from Canberra sent me a message. His name was Liam Adamaitys, and over the course of a week or two, and a couple of visits to the venue, he sent me many messages and pictures, professing his love for a place called Dangerous Ales.He was so damn excited to tell me about it! I knew I just had to get their founder, Damian Martin (no not the ex-Australian Cricketer) onto the mic for a chat.Dangerous Ales is on the South Coast of NSW, closer to Canberra than Sydney to be honest. And according to their biggest fan, they are bloody amazing, with a great story. So, what do you know about the world of crypto currency? For me it’s not much, but I also know that if someone asked me what is a natural partnership for craft beer, there would be maybe 100 things I would mention before crypto currency came out of my mouth. But, with crypto currency hitting the mainstream in recent months, (I know this cos my taxi driver was giving me a lesson in it recently), maybe a craft beer crypto currency collaboration ain't as strange as it seems.Enter Catchment Brewing and their Crypto Currency brewing partner Moon Pirate, with the world's first ever Crypto Currency beer.Sound interesting? Well tune in and have a listen to Catchment Brewing CEO, Matt Newberry, explain it all, and more!Catchment Brewing Co.Moon Pirate VideoWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
This episode is all about starting the conversation about listening, respecting and treating everyone in the same manner. The craft beer industry has been shaken up recently, and with good reason. The social media posts from here and abroad, and articles published on the Crafty Pint and other sites, highlighting the way that our female colleagues in the industry have been treated now and in the past got me thinking. Can I, should I do something to help with this podcast of mine and not only celebrate the good stuff, but highlight the other issues we need to have a conversation about. The answer is yes, so here we are.As you will hear on this episode, I got off to a little bit of a rough start, but we got there in the end...we had a conversation.Thank you to Lindsy & Tif for joining me on this episode, I really hope this helps the cause. If you want to hear more from Linds & TIf, check out their new podcast, Crack The Ceiling.Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
This non alcoholic beer craze seems to be gaining momentum. Carlton Zero is being seen in the AFL as a major sponsor, Heineken is all over our TV screens and in Europe it seems that some soccer stadiums are going dry and punters will be watch the ball go in to the back of the auld onion bag while sipping on a beer that won’t make them bash on with their opposing supporters. As Bob Dylan once said, times they are a changing. In Australia, the big boys are leading the charge with Non-Alc options under both Domestic and International brands. Not wanting to leave it all to the big boys, we are also starting to see craft beer lovers have options as well. One such option is Upflow Brewing, under the guidance of Slow Beer's Chris Menichelli. It was going to take a lot of convincing for me to get on board the Non-Alc train, so I bought myself a four ack and sat down for a really interesting chat with Chris.Buy Upflow beers hereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
The only way to introduce Nic Sandery from Molly Rose Brewing in Collingwood, Victoria, is to say he is s great story teller. And he has plenty of stories to tell...he sure has packed a lot into his 30 something years on this planet. He took what he learned in his science degree at University and hit the road!Nic as worked in a number of Australian breweries, spent time in the UK & Japan and worked two vintages at wineries back in Australia. All of these adventures have left him with a plethora of stories to tell and a whole lot of ideas to try and squeeze into the small space that Molly Rose calls home in Collingwood. This is one of those episodes where I am discovering my guest's story, along with the listener, and they are the ones I love the most. It's only been six months since I last got together with the lads, Dave Padden and Ben Miller, for a chat about all things brewing. Where did the time go? What have the boys been up to? And could I find the remaining listener questions to ask the lads?Well, it was a challenge, but we managed to get through it, and here it is. Part 2 of our listener question fuelled Christmas Special, and it was a hell of a lot of fun, so we won't take so long to record again. In this episode we talk about* The recent changes to excise * Lactose in beer * Finding faults in your home brew * How fresh hops have changed the game * And how Dave has some barrels in his car park now!

Where do you start when trying to describe this brewery, and turn that into a snappy episode title? To be honest, I wasn't sure, so apologies for the generic titles. You see, Spinifex Brewing is Aboriginal and Veteran owned, making beers with native ingredients in their home state of Western Australia, supporting our returned Veterans and looking to take Fosters' mantle as the most well known Aussie export beer...how do you fit that into a snappy 5 or 6 word title?
Anyway, enjoy the episode with Spinifex CEO Adam Barnard, this is a unique story!

I was pretty fortunate to be able to get DJ on as a guest, and as they say good things come to those who wait. Dj and his wife, Harriet, have been so busy with their little brew pub in the Blue Mountains, as it takes the Aussie craft beer world by storm! In a little over 12 months, the brew pub concept that was designed to give DJ and Harriet the work life balance they craved by moving out of the hustle and bustle of Sydney, has kind of gone gang busters. During Covid they pivoted online and craft beer drinkers lost their minds over their regular limited releases, so much so that they now have to build another brewery to keep up with demand!DJ joined me for a chat, in between pouring concrete slabs, as the new brewery build is in full swing. Even with all this extra stress in his life, his passion for his craft rings true in this chat.Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
I think everyone is aware of how Your Mates Brewing, the "Overnight Success", rose to prominence in the Hottest 100 beers a few years ago. The two boys from the Sunny Coast, Matt and Christen, were all of a sudden the next big thing in craft beer, but also a bit of a target for ridicule and jealousy.Whichever point of view you have on how Larry surprised the industry, you have to admire the lads for how they have continued to work their butts off to build the Your Mates business. Now the boys have outgrown their current digs and are looking to develop a new site to introduce Larry, Macca, Sally, Eddie, and their other mates to the beer drinking public. My sleepy little hometown of Hobart is once again alive, welcoming back tourists and it is great to see. One such tourist decided to take time out from his visit with his wife to sit down with me for a chat. A chat that has been in the works for a while, as we waited for Your Mates to have some new news to share...now is the time. What if I told you that not all non-alcoholic beers are created the same...some even taste great! In a world where the focus on self care and wellness is increasing, there are product of all shapes and size popping up to capitalise on a consumer market that is very quickly expanding. One such product is that of non alcoholic craft beer. I'm not talking about that watery crap that Carlton or Heinken serve up, or the Holsten ones you can buy in the supermarket. I am talking about full flavoured, full bodied beer that is hard to distinguish from its higher abv cousins.I've been seeing a lot of discussion about non-alcoholic beer on the socials of late, so I invited Hairless Dog Brewing co-founder, Paul Pirner, to tell the story of Americas first exclusively 0.0% Non Alcoholic brewery.https://www.drinkhairlessdog.com/http://beerhealer.com/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
Sometimes on these interviews it takes a little bit of time to warm up, feel each other out, and then get into the conversation...on this one with the One Drop team, we just seemed to click. Well, except for the first few minutes where technology let us down once again...this seems to be a re-occuring theme.Anyway, like the pro's we all are 😂🤣, we were able to get past the dodgy tech and into a great story of a brewery that has taken the mantra of Reggae Music, infused it with beer, and unleashed it on Botany in New South Wales. This one is a lot of fun...https://www.onedropbrewingco.com.au/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player

Co-Conspirators, the brewery that appears to be taking on the world, but it still run by 4 people...yep, just two couples...Jacqui Sacco, Tim Martin, Maggie and Deon Smit. This chat with Charlie Hodgson goes in many different directions, he is a really interesting bloke.I've heard from real journalists that using silence in an interview can be a very powerful tool to get people to open up to you. On this episode, the 6 second delay that Charlie and I had to navigate was the silence that allowed Charlie to just open up and talk about his career, both the good and the bad. This is a story of a guy who has experienced many high's in his careers, he has won awards for his beers in the past, and now he is part of building something really special at Helios. But it is also a great example that success from working yourself to the bone can affect the rest of your life, and on this episode, Charlie was brave enough to share some of that with me. Thanks to Charlie for opening up on this one, it was really interesting to hear his experiences.Thankfully for him, it looks like Charlie is back on track doing what he does best. The beers coming out of Helios are fantastic, AND, they are brewed in probably the most environmentally sustainable fashion in the industry! Joining me on this episode are the two co-founders of Batch Brewing…Andrew Fineran, who joined me from Marrickville, and Chris Sidwa all the way from New Jersey.Batch Brewing should be pretty familiar to you all, this isn’t the first time they have appeared on this podcast, and they are from one of Australia’s most popular craft beer hotspots, Marrickville. What you may not know about Batch however, is what has been going on behind the scenes in the business. Over that last 12 months or so, some subtle changes to the business have been made. Some of them because of Covid, others due to the state of the market, and they are about to open the business up to an equity crowd funding offer.Plenty going on, so I thought I would get the lads on to talk about what all the changes mean for the future of the business. If you are interested in the equity crowd funding offer, you can get more information from here:https://equitise.com/offer/batch-brewingWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player
Im heading back out West for another great craft beer story, and I am bloody excited about it. It’s no secret that I love the WA beer scene, the beers are awesome, the people even better, and the fans are amazing…I’m talking to you Perth Beer Snobs and South West Craft beer Bogans…thanks for your supportThe left side of the country is big and brown, perfect for growing grapes. I know, I know, this is a beer podcast, but I felt like that was a great segue for me to introduce my guest for this evening. His name is Jason Credaro and comes from a long line of viticulturists, wine makers for the uneducated few among you. But a trip to Oktoberfest kind of threw a spanner in the works of chasing the dream of working with grapes, he decided he’d rather switch to hops!Shunned by the family, he then set out to follow his dream. With stints at Billabong Brewing and Little Creatures, Blue Mile and Brick Lane, and even a recent stink in South Korea with AB-Inbev he has certainly paid his dues and built up a pretty handy set of skills. This episode almost didn't happen!Recording proved to be a bit of a challenge, there were many technical glitches, false starts, and times when we really weren't sure if we were going to end up with any kind of finished product. But, we persevered, and I am so glad we did, cos this is a bloody fun chat. Many thanks to Ned and JC for working through the issues!!In this episode we discuss:* hype beers and the challenge of naming and scheduling them, * what it meant to win 2020 brewer of the year, * Deeds' new taproom and when that should be open, * how many grams per litre of hops is too much; and * MacGyver and 7 minute abs.

This is another one of those episodes when I get to dive into a story about a brewery that I know very little about, Sunday Road Brewing. What do you know about Sunday Road brewing? Have you tried their beers, have you visited their tap room…where is their tap room? Well, for those of you who are either shit at geography, like me, or don't really know Sydney...as the crow flies, Sunday Road is about 25km South West of the Sydney Opera House. Closer to Cronulla Beach than Bondi, and with only a few breweries in the area, unlike Sydney’s jam packed inner west. It’s a bit slower paced, which I think seems to sit pretty nicely with the Sunday Road Brewing brand.Sunday Road Brewing founder, Brad Walker turned a Sunday afternoon home brewing hobby into an award winning brewery on Sydney's Southern Beaches with Head Brewer Mick O’Rance, and they joined me for a chat about their journey.Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
On a scale of 1 to 10, how “into” beer are you?My guests on this podcast, Dylan Kelly and Henry Tier are definitely 10/10. They are beer enthusiasts, who started home brewing, turned pro, and then started a business that aims to make it easier for more people to join the home brewing revolution.Yep, these guys brew professionally for 4Pines during the day and in their “spare” time they are developing recipes, sending out brew kits and answering questions for home brewers across Australia with Brew Box.I caught up with the boys recently to find out more about their plans to see how they planned to introduce more people to the joy of home brewing. Not a bad time to do it with people spending a lot more time at home, hey!!While I had them, I also thought I would pick their brains on the benefits of working for a big brewer, how they got their start in the industry, and what advice they had for home brewers looking to follow in their footsteps.https://brewbox.beer/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
I'm hoping that Jester King Brewery needs no introduction for you, listeners. We make food & drink uniquely tied to a time, place & people. We're a welcoming place for people of all ages to enjoy community, fun & hospitality in a very special setting.Jester King is one of those game changing breweries that captures the imagination of the craft beer drinker, this one included. This chat with Allagash Brewing Marketing Director, Jeff Pillet-Shore was just what I was looking for to finish off the year.Allagash has been around since 1996 and is one of the OG’s of the USA craft beer scene. It was started by one man with a dream who would lend his hand at anything to get the brewery up and running…welding, jack hammering, electrical, it didn’t matter, and Rob Todd found a way to bring his dream to life. Since those humble beginnings, Allagash Brewing in Portand Maine has gone on to win all kinds of awards while producing some of the finest beers in the lands. It all started with a Belgian witbier, Allagash white that polarised drinkers initially, but eventually won over their hearts and minds and is now sold in cans and can be found all over America. Outside of that classic brew, Allagash pretty much plays in every other beer category you can think of.In this episode Jeff talks about:* The complex and unique 3-tier system in America and how it shaped the USA market; * How Allagash likes to position their marketing message in a crowded market; * What it means to take a hospitality centred approach; * How, even though they are getting bigger, they are still a brewer-led organisation; * Some of the decisions they have made around the beers they brew, and choose not to brew; * And how Allagash turned the gloom and doom of Covid-19 into a massive positive for their staff.
An enlightening and educational chat with Jeff, that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.https://www.allagash.com/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website

You have just gotta hear the story about Clark's Chinese friend...it is epic!In this episode, we head overseas to talk about a brewery located in a little town called Decora, Iowa. Pretty much smack bang in the middle of this USA, Decorah is home to less than 10,000 people…and one brewery, Toppling Goliath. You may not be familiar with the name of the town, but I am tipping you know about Toppling Goliath, and if you are lucky enough, you may have tasted one of their award winning beers.Founded by Clark and Barbara Lewey in 2009, their home town may be small, but they have very quickly built a reputation as one of the best in the game. Not only is Clark a great brewer and business man, he is also a great story teller, as you will see by the end of this episode.https://www.tgbrews.com/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
Its not gonna come as a surprise to you that because of Covid, some in the craft brewing community are doing it pretty tough. It’s also not going to be a surprise to you that during these tough times, the community is rallying together in whatever way they can to help ensure the industry gets through this.I heard a story this past week about one brewery working with a few others on a bit of a collaboration project, and so I decided to put to work those amazing journalistic skills I learned back in Grade 10 English class, and do a little digging. My in-depth research led me to the two gentlemen, Luke Phillips from Deep Creek Brewing and Matt Wilson from the newly crowned Champion Brew Pub at the Indies, Moffat Beach Brewing. These guys have recently collaborated on a beer for the Deep Creek Local Lockdown series, where Kiwis, DC, have teamed up with 6 Aussie breweries to brew a beer and get it out to thirst Aussie as they come out of lockdown. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time for Moffat Beach Brewing, who had recently begun work on building their new brewery by way of an "instruction manual" made up of only photos! In case you hadn't heard, HPA has released a new hop they think is gonna be something pretty bloody special. It's called Eclipse and it just might be the best hop since Galaxy...big call, hey!!Anyway, with the release of the new hop I thought I would record an episode that not only gave you all a bit of background about the hop, but also advice on how to introduce it (or other new hops) into your brew shed.In this episode, Owen talks about how brewers are spoiled for choice with hops these days, and if you are releasing a new hop like Eclipse you need to be able to impress a brewer enough to make them want to make a change to their hop bill…easier said than done!Joining Owen on this episode is Moo Brew Head Brewer, Jack Viney, and he talks about the new beer he brewed with the new hop and offers his advice to home brewers.Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website

More bonus content for ya!It seems that Wild Ales, blending and barrel ageing is a hot topic in craft beer right now. Names like Wildflower Brewing & Blending, Garage Project, Dollar Bill Brewing Pty Ltd, Jester King Brewery and Casey Brewing and Blending are on the tip of the tongues of the pointy end of the craft beer market. Will Tatchell from Van Dieman Brewing released 3 Wild Ales this week. He calls them his Australian Spontaneous Ales, and they are made with a mix of local produce, local microbes and French oak casks.I invited him on to this video chat to explain each of the beers, how they were made, what's in them, and the various complex characteristics, as we drank them together!Lovers of advanced brewing techniques, or magical beers, you will love this!http://www.vandiemanbrewing.com.au/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
Everywhere you go in this craft beer industry, you meet people, have a chat, and very quickly realise that if you are also from the industry, there are about 3 degrees of separation between people. Everyone knows someone who has worked for the Goat, James Squire, Feral, Little Creatures or Matlida Bay.In this case, we have a brewery on the Balmain Peninsula filled with people who have spent time at Balter, Modus Operandi, The Rocks, 4 Pines, Stone & Wood and Little Creatures. That sounds like a pretty good mix of experiences on which to base a new brewing venture. And so was born White Bay Brewing, co-founded by some well known names…the Tims, Condon & Fishwick, Adam Trippe-Smith, Jess Walker and my guest on this episode, Dennis DeBoer.Joining White Bay after stints at Oskar Blues, Stone & Wood and Modus Operandi, you could say he has paid his dues and now it's his time to shine at the front of this craft beer boy band, White Bay Brewing.https://whitebay.beer/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website

This one is for those who are fascinated by science, love the magic of time in barrel, or want to learn more about the art of wild ales. It’s a longer episode, but I think you will like it!For this episode, I invited Troy Casey from Casey Brewing and Blending in Glenwood Springs Colorado to tell us about the art of brewing and blending Wild Ales. Troy and his wife, Emma, established Casey in 2013 with a desire to brew beers with amazing local ingredients, fermented in oak barrels.Troy has a great story to share about beer nerds in sleeping bags waiting for his release at the tap room, the great advice Charlie Bamforth gave him, and how the Cantillon rep back in the day had to plead with him to buy a bottle! For those interested in brewing Wild Ales, I borrowed upon the expertise of Will Tatchell to help me with asking some more technical questions that will hopefully quench your thirst for wild ale knowledge. But, he’s not the only one imparting knowledge in this episode though, I repay the favour by teaching him about “taking the piss”!One of my most favourite episodes, Troy is a great guy who is only too happy to share his insights.https://caseybrewing.com/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
Strange title for my 100th episode? Listen in and you will understand the reference. In this episode, the always entertaining Jos and Pete from Garage Project share their stories from the past, present and future. We cover a lot of ground and have a lot of laughs as the lads dive into some of the folklore around an amazing brand.I don't need to sell this one to you, you know it will be great...amazing guests!https://garageproject.co.nz/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?* Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube * Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottom * Or Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player * Check out my website
If you haven’t been to Hobart, chances you haven’t heard of, and more than likely never tried the beers from my guests brewery. If you walk 15 minutes North of the Hobart CBD, you are in one of the best areas for food and drinks in Tasmania, and one of the first places you will discover is a small brew pub by the name of T-Bone brewing. Established in 2015 by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Tom and Carla Bignell, it is true that good things come in small packages, as this brewery is now producing some of the tastiest beers in the state.A rare "live in venue" recording for me...I can't wait to be able to travel and do more of these!https://www.facebook.com/tbonebrewingcohttps://www.tbonebrewing.com.au/
When you want to go deep on a topic you love, in this case IPA's, you want to talk about it with someone who also loves them and is pretty damn good at brewing them...luckily Dave Padden is known as one of the best brewers in the IPA game! And, believe it or not, his Protege, Ben Miller has been lapping up all of the knowledge that Dave has been throwing his way in recent years and really rises to the occasion in this episode! We dive into the sub styles of IPA for a "quick" game of "Love it or Hate it", which became a pretty in-depth chat about the various sub styles where the boys shared their stories from the past (The 6 Schooner Test) about great examples of the style and what they learned from brewing them.BTW - Did you know that these guys are so dedicated to brewing Hazy IPA's, that even after brewing them for 4 years, they still feel the have more to learn, and talk a couple of times a week about the new stuff they have learned! That is dedication to the cause. If you are a home brewer, and you only listen to one podcast this week...make it this one!Oh and if you are on Apple Podcasts, please rate, review and subscribe for me!
The hall of Asgard is where Vikings go to drink with their mates in the after life...how cool is that! What started out as a story of a guy busting is balls to live his brewing dream ended up being a fun and entertaining chat about gypsy brewing, the art of label design, and 90's Aussie rock!!I had a great time chatting with Scott Hunt form Valhalla Brewing, he is a ripping bloke that has a great story to tell.Enjoy!
Uraidla? Where the f##k is Uraidla? That was the response from my mate when I told him I had Uraidla Brewery Head Brewer, Oscar Matthews on the podcast this week. Uraidla sounds like a town in the middle of nowhere, but truth be told, its only 25 minutes from the Adelaide CBD in the Adelaide Hills! And what a great story Oscar has to tell. He learned his craft in a San Luis Obispo, converted an old abandoned squash court into a brewery, bought a kit that was too small and half way through they upped it a bigger one! Starting early on as a contract brewer, he is now brewing great beers out of the old squash court with local spring water and witchcraft inspired names! We covered a lot of ground in this one and I also learned something about brewery waste water in this episode!!https://uraidlabrewery.com.au/
It's a pretty familiar story with craft breweries, there are only so many resources available and far too many jobs to be done. Often, getting the beer out the door is a lot more important than building a brand, so what inevitably happens is that the brewery designs a logo. As Dave talks about in this interview, a logo and a brand, while closely related and must work together cohesively, are different things.* A logo is an easily recognizable graphic symbol that identifies a company, a commercial product, or any public or private entity. * A brand is the idea or image people have in mind when thinking about specific products, services and activities of a company, both in a practical and emotional way.
See the difference? In this episode, Dave talks about the process he went through to update his branding. It involved being told harsh truths, he had to make big decisions, he had to let gho a bit, and he listened to the people around him to come up with a new era for Akasha Brewing Company. As always with Dave, this is an open and honest discussion with insights from one of the best in the biz.https://akashabrewing.com.au/
Usually when I prepare for these interviews, I have a pretty good idea for what topics we will discuss, and know enough about my guest to not get too caught off guard with their answers.I thought that would be the case with this interview, but i was DEAD WRONG!Whatever you think you know about St. Andrews Beach Brewery, I guarantee this chat with Tim will make you realise that there is more than meets the eye wit this one!https://standrewsbeachbrewery.com.au/
Hands up if you think that 2020 has been pretty shit?I am with you, it sure has. But let’s spare a thought for our friends in Victoria…their 2020 has been extra shit, and it continues to be that way. I have friends, family and work colleagues in Victoria and sometimes I feel guilty for the current situation we find ourselves down here in Tasmania, and sometimes I honestly feel helpless. So last week, when I heard that the great people at Brick Lane Brewing and Carwyn Cellars were collaborating on a very special beer to raise funds for the Covid19 EAD program, I wanted to be able to use this platform to help them out in some small way.So here we are…joining me to talk about their new collaboration, their second All Together Beer, is Paul Bowker and Jon Seltin form Brick Lane, and someone new to the podcast, Ben Carwyn from Carwyn Cellars. This beer is a great initiative, so if you want to support it and get hold of some of the new beer, you can buy it online at Carwyn Cellars here, or via Brick Lane here
No fancy introduction to this one...I'm going to keep it simple.
If you have any interest in becoming a Gypsy Brewer, or want to know more about how it works, listen to this episode with Shapeshifter Brewing Co-Founder (and current Gypsy Brewer), James McCall.
James has written a blog about the subject and wants to share is tips with even more people, so he joined me for a chat!https://www.shapeshifterbrewing.com.au/blog
Tell me if you have heard this story before, a bunch of Uni mates decide to home brew to "save money". Sounds familiar? Well for South Fremantle Brewing, that is how it all started for a group of 12 mates, an then they realised they were kinda good at it.A few of the 12 dropped off along the way, but those who remain decided to follow the gypsy brewing path and set out to create beers that the local community could be proud of. They now juggle their real jobs and look to take their side hustle to the next level. This is the dream that so many home brewers want to chase, Graham Rigo and his mates are making it happen!
This episode is the usual mix of taking the piss, back slapping and little gems of info they that the Pro & Protege drop along the way! This time, we are talking about Kettle Sours, and then we move into adding fruit into beers. Both Ben and Dave are very experienced with these styles...Dave sips on a Blood Orange Gose while we chat, and Ben has been messing around with these styles in his Pro-Sumer home brew set up for years. He even served a mulberry sour at his wedding that Dave may of may not have over indulged on!Stuff we cover in this:* How some brewers use Inner Health Plus tablets in their beer! * The things you need to know about brewing kettle sours; * How Akasha brew their kettle sours and how they were inspired by Anderson Valley; * How there is a bit of a difference about how you should handle your fruit in the home shed, as opposed to the commercial brewery; * Why keeping oxygen out of your beers is an absolute must - purge, purge, purge; * How you can experiment in your brew shed with split ferments; * And what fruit the boys would never use in a fruited beer!
Some great stuff in this, enjoy the fun!
China...allegedly the second hardest place in the world to open a craft brewery and Carl Setzer from Great Leap Brewing said "Challenge Accepted"!!Enjoy this extended play interview, Carl had a lot of great stories to tell, so I just wound him up and let him go for it! In this episode he talks about:* The importance of combining the chinese stories and the american brewing ideas to come up with a label for ex-pats and the emerging chinese craft beer drinker. * How you need to know how to work the system in China for it to work for you. Including the importance of shouting government executives to dinner to "thank them" for approving your application. * The amazing ingredients available in the western world and how he creates unique beers with them. * Getting all nerdy about the different varieties of "craft" honey available to brew with in China. * And how the small guy fought AB Inbev and won, for the betterment of the craft beer industry in China.
And he also shares the story of how he and Moon Dog Co-Founder Josh Uljans met over a number two...literally. A funny story that is made even better by Carls impressions of Josh! This interview was a blast!!Check out their awesome beer labels: http://www.greatleapbrewing.com/Christian rock blog article: http://www.greatleapbrewing.com/blog-details.html?blogId=70
Mentioning the name Sea Legs Brewing outside of the Sunshine State might draw a few blank looks from beer lovers, it certainly snuck up on me, and I’d like to think I have my finger in the beer pulse in this country. I was flicking through the Gram and came across one of their posts somehow. One click through to their profile and a few photos later, I was like, who are these people, I want to know more.So here we are, we are about to go on a journey, a voyage if you will, and see where this little brewery, Sea Legs, came from, and more importantly, where their head brewer and co founder, John Fuchs, sees them going in the future. In this episode, Jon is really open and honest about the challenges he overcame in bringing his dream to life...it was a tough slog! But, he seems to have handled it all pretty well and is now reaping the rewards and pumping out some great beer! Along the way he shares some great stories of his time in Colorado as a home brewer, and, let's us in on why he doesn't have a mid-strength option to convert the Queensland middy-drinkers...yet!Please Subscribe, Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-beer-healer-interviews/id1434286285
The wonderful world of yeast is the topic for discussion on this episode, and there is a lot to cover off on!Among the piss taking and laughter, there are some serious bits of knowledge being dropped by the lads this week. In this episode, we cover:* Yeast flavours and aromas * Rules for yeast usage * Over pitching * Collecting and cleaning yeast * Starters vs rehydration * And the boys brewer crush on Steve Haumschild from Lanikai Brewing...wild yeast cultivator who we will get back on for a further discussion soon.
Dave also shares some insights on how he handles his yeast strains on a larger scale at Akasha Brewing.
Strap yourselves in, this is a long one!On the back of a long lunch and some strange meetings that required them to taste test their own products, the boys are fully charged, have a lot of opinions, and want to share them with you!The lads just took me on a fantastic voyage with this one, so much so that I threw away my notes and just ran with it!These guys are knowledgeable, funny, nerdy and share so many insights that you beer nerds will love. Things like:* Why Commodore 64's were awesome * How their advisors led them astray when setting up their business structure * Why all breweries should be steam driven * The economic realities of craft beer * The challenges of running a small business * How much stainless steel two mortgages can buy * Why they feel so strongly about creating a brand that doesn't conform to a corporate look * And, why it's a great idea to drink before you podcast!
They also share the origin story of their hype beer...Sludge Beast!A seriously fun (and loose) session with the guys, I hope you enjoy our chat!
The Tasmanian beer scene was a little slower that other states to get on board with the craft beer idea, but in recent years the number of small breweries in the state has increased. As they say in the classics, a rising lifts all boats, and as brewers around the state have increased their brewing knowledge, the whole industry has benefited. And now, Tasmanian breweries are producing some world class beer, and utilising the amazing natural resources available in the state.A few years ago, a small brewery popped up in Hobart's Northern suburbs, it was called Fox Friday and was run part time by a husband and wife duo. Unfortunately for those two individuals, it didn't work out for them. But, with every cloud there is a silver lining and a couple of Western Australians, by way of Houston, Thailand and Singapore decided they would purchase the brewery as-is and make it their own. This is the story of how Ben and Sarah Hooper took a brewery, and the brand they inherited with it, and transformed it from being just another craft beer brand into what my be the new hype leader in the Tasmanian market. In this episode, Ben and I talk about:* How they made the Fox Friday brand their own * How Covid-19 has allowed them the time to build their online store, and how that is a key part of their strategy moving forward...weekly online releases! * Some of the amazing breweries he learned from while living in Houston, and how their dreams of starting a brewery there were dashed * How you don't use a farm cube on the back of a ute when you need to transport your beer get it into cans without a canning line * Building the hype! How Fox Friday is ready to capitalise on the Haze Craze! * And what beers and breweries get his hazy juices flowing.
Matt Moore is like a wound up spring, so make sure you listen good!Bright Tank Brewing in East Perth is one of the many amazing breweries that are building the best beer scene in the land, according to Matt! Not one to do things by halves, Matt rund his brewery, still consults in the construction industry and trades currencies in his spare time!Matt jokingly said to his wife, who is apparently the OG and Boss of this pperation, that they should start a brewery together...and she agreed. And as they say, the rest is history. In this episode, we talk about:* How he jumped on the craft beer roller coaster based on making a joke they should star * Our love of Wu Tang Clan and Graffitti * The art of creating a great venue, food AND beer * And taking his brewery to the next level!
In case you didn’t notice, our craft beer scene in Australia is maturing quickly. We are well past our formative years, made a few mistakes as we great up and now I think we are in a bit of an adolescent phase. We are finding out who we are, what we stand for and are forging our own identity. The same can be said for many craft breweries around the nation…you get into your 4th, 5th & 6th year of operation and you have settled on your business model, your beer range is cemented, and you know what does and doesn’t make you money…it’s time to take a look inside and make some tweaks to make sure you are heading toward your long term goal.Case in point, Ballistic Beer, you know them, the brewery with the cool keg bomb logo? Well these guys have hit that point in their evolution where there are many things to consider if they want to continue to grow their business…something that I want to know more about. In this episode, Head Brewer Lachy Crothes, talks about breweries around their size can get caught in the "Valley of Death" and what Ballistic has been doing to avoid it...a brand refresh, new venues, working with a partner and pumping out amazing beers. This episode is a little longer, but as you will hear, Lachy tells a great story. If you wanna support the podcast, please leave a 5 Star rating here: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-beer-healer-interviews/id1434286285
Anyone who loves 90's hip hop is an immediate friend of mine...enter Ed Nolle. One half of the dynamic duo behind Dollar Bill Brewing Co. Wife, Fiona, is also a hip hop lover...she likes Naughty By Nature!!Anyway, this is a story of wild ales, intricate labels, playing with yeast and relying on your palate to blend up some wicked beers!https://dollarbill.com.au/
So this episode got off to kind of a rough start, but the mistake I made in calling Brian Watson, Brian Hamilton was actually a blessing in disguise. Why? Well, because I had his name wrong (the Good George Brewery is in Hamilton, hence my error), my research didn't turn yup much about his friggen amazing career...this guy is an OG, right up there with names like Dave Bonighton, Brad Rogers, Phil Sexton, Ross Jurisich, Brendan Varis, Jamie Cook, Chuck Hahn and so on...So yeah, I enjoyed discovering more about Brians adventures, just like I hope you will...in fact, I enjoyed it so much I may just have to invite him back for more story time!We of course talk a lot about the Good George Brewery story, but in typical Beer Healer Interviews style, there are a few detours and we cover a lot of ground covered in this 45 minute session, including:* His link to a few of my home town breweries; * His experience as an international beer judge and brewery commissioner; * Being invited to Russian Rivers birthday party; * Launching Vonu in Fiji; * His infamous Squealers that exploded on supermarket shelves; and * Making Covid whisky from returned beer kegs
I really enjoyed this chat, and look forward to the next one!
Well it's not every day you get to speak to the Managing Director and Head Brewer of a brewery, but I guess that just speaks to how generous Brick Lane Brewing are with their time and resources. There is so much I didn't know about Brick Lane before this chat, and both gents were really open and honest with how their brewery got up and running, and operates today. In this episode we talk about:· Their initial beers that lived in brown bottles and were brewed under contract at Hawkers;· How they don’t shy away from having celebrity investors;· Why they weren’t afraid to go head on into a crowded mainstream friendly market and back themselves to build a BIG brewery; and· How they help other local brewers with getting started and using their resources to improve their beer.If you want to support the podcast, please click here to Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-beer-healer-interviews/id1434286285
It's been a Baptism of Fire (no pun intended) for Sanctus Brewing. They are yet to celebrate their first birthday and they have already experienced devastating bushfires and a worldwide pandemic. Many would have folded under such pressure, but not Head Brewer Banjo Hillier...he is just getting on with all of his jobs, from handyman to gardener and of course brewer!Banjo was originally a winemaker, but found himself eventually using those skills as a brewer, and by what I have tasted, he made the right choice! In this episode, Banjo and I chat about:· Which profession allowed him more creative freedom, wine making or brewing;· How being in a tourist hot spot made him tweak his beer line-up to suit all-comers;· How the Sanctus owners installed a CNC robot farmer on the site; and· How brewing beer wasn’t enough of a challenge, so he installed a still as well. This is a great chat with an absolutely ripping bloke!!If you want to support the podcast, please click here to Rate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-beer-healer-interviews/id1434286285
Wanna learn something about Hazy beers, or have a laugh...why can't we just have both?In this episode, Dave and Ben talk about their favourite hazy beers and how to brew them. They also answer all of your questions you submitted on https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealerListen in for a way you can win some Akasha beer, paid for by me!!
If you love a good Home Brew to Pro story, then the story of how Cornel started Shambles will be right in your wheel house! He goes deep on this one, letting us all in on * how his most popular beer started life as a mistake made when commissioning the brewery; * how his business plan and his spreadsheets never included a plan for a core range, and how that was very quickly changed; * and why he loves "big boy" cans, buying another 200,000 of them to fill with his amazing brews.
Settle in for this one, it goes a bit longer than the normal episodes, but when you get someone who is so willing to share their experiences, i figure you just let them go for it!Cheers!!
Maybe I am starting to get better at this with my hard hitting style of journalism, because in this interview I manager to extract two exclusive pieces of information from Scott Taylor. Well, ok, he basically just let them slip, but I will claim it!Waaaaay back in episode 6, Scott Taylor from Deep Cree Brewing onto a very dodgy internet connection with me and did a really nice thing for me as a beginner podcaster, he gave me some of his time to tell his great craft beer story. Since that interview, Deep Creek has gone on to win Champion Medium International Brewery at the 2019 Australian International Beer Awards…now I don’t want to claim any part of their winning that trophy, but it does take a team to win championships as I have heard this week in the Netflix series on the Chicago Bulls.I was taking a look back at the previous guests of the show this week and shooting out a few emails to check in on people and I thought it would be great to see how Scott and the Deep Creek lads have been going, and he agreed to come back for another chat!
I am not sure what fascinates me about the West Australian beer scene, I mean we couldn’t be further apart, and I haven’t had the pleasure of trying many of the beers coming from the breweries over there, but still I chase them to jump onto the podcast and tell their story.Case in point, Cheeky Monkey Brewing Co…these guys have been around quite a few years and have an interesting history, and I have been pestering them for a little while to jump on and this week they relented! I was drinking a Cheeky Monkey Pale Ale a few weeks ago and was looking at the bright blue can in my hands that looks nothing like the original cans you guys released, and is in fact a second or third brand refresh for the brewery and I thought to myself…these guys have a story to tell!!So, to tell me all about their history, their future, and the situation they currently find themselves I asked Cheeky Monkey Head of Brewing Operations, Brett Newman, to join me for a chat.
So I recorded this interview with Mark and Matt from Rusty Penny Brewing a few weeks ago, before the Corona virus hijacked our lives, the media and most of our conversations. I have to say that it was such a nice change of pace listening to this interview with the lads, we just talked about their story of a couple of best mates following their brewing dreams…from the shed to a storage locker in Penrith!!A couple of unassuming guys who just love beer and are doing what every home brewer one day dreams of…going pro.I haven’t spoken to the lads since the interview, and a lot has changed in the world, so if you are in their neck of the woods, drop into the storage locker and say hi!
It's been a big weekend in Tassie with the Isolation Beer Festival running on social media. This weekend we have been celebrating Tassie Independent Beer with the Tasmanian Isolation Beer Festival. Brewers have been sharing their knowledge, consumers have been lapping it up, and in return posting pictures of their favourite Tassie beers with the hashtag, #tasindibeerAnd while this was set up to be a weekend long celebration, there is no reason why we cant use that hashtag forever, so get amongst it peeps and show the Tassie brewers some love.Speaking of Tassie brewers, that’s why we are here on this Sunday afternoon, in what some have called the pinnacle, or the culmination of the festival. I have the 5 self-proclaimed OG’s of the Tassie Craft beer industry on the line to talk about…well…themselves. Here to share stories form the past, beers from the now, and hopes and dreams for the future are Dave McGill from Moo Brew, Owen Johnston from HPA, Michael Briggs from Ironhouse and the two main organisers of the Isolation Beer Festival, Will Tatchell from Van Dieman Brewing and Jon Burridge from Cryer Malt.And...there is a quiz to find out who is the smartest...each contestant giving up a large format, hard to find bottle from their collection to enter! This was so much fun, hopefully you enjoy the banter and the chaos as much as we did!!https://www.facebook.com/events/777751489420827
It's lunch time and I am stuck at home with the kids...luckily I have friends in the craft beer industry who love a chat, so I'm pressing record!Dan Norris from Black Hops Brewing is a smart bloke with an award winning brewery and plenty of great ideas...but even they are doing it tough. In this episode, I check in with him on what's going on and then we shift gears to think about what life will be like for Black Hops post the C-word!If you want to jump on for a chat with me during my lunch hour, email me at beerhealer@internode.on.net
It’s Sunday afternoon and I feel like a beer. Its been a big week working from home and as of tomorrow I have my dear children joining me…oh the joys.It could be worse I guess, and I know there are many among us who are doing it pretty tough right now, and my heart goes out to you and your family. I'm not sure there is really much I can do to help, so I'm just trying to help take peoples minds off the shit stuff, even just for a half an hour or so while I tell stories on this podcast. So, I decided that this afternoon I didn’t want to drink alone. Instead, I have invited a couple of my mates to join me…the man with the best bear in the Tassie beer industry (sorry Jimmy Anderson) who in the last 12 months broke the no IPA rule at Moo Brew, and also produced a Hazy as well…who can forget half Naked Dave McGill flipping his hair back in the water in their social media campaign. And, joining him is the Tassie Beer scenes Frank Costello…look it up peeps…the guy that brings everyone together, despite differing opinions and agendas, all for the good of keeping the peace and creating an awesome indie beer scene in Tasmaina, Cryer Malts Jon Burridge.Let's crack those cans!!
I know what you are all thinking out there in the community...F%$K You Corona Virus! It's a strange time we are currently living in, and our little world of Craft Beer, there will be many tough times to come. To help combat this, the Crafty Pint have started the #keeplocalalive campaign to see if we as a community can help out the people working in the industry.I caught up with James, and my old mate, Will Tatchell from Van Dieman Brewing over lunch this week to find out more about the campaign and how this pandemic is affecting business.https://craftypint.com/keeping-local-alive
Grant Tondro is the co-founder of the 3 Local Brothers Restaurant Group, who operate a whole bunch of food and beverage outlets throughout Southern California. One of their venues is Mason Ale Works, a 15 barrel, or 18 hectolitre operation just North of San Diego, which is a craft beer hot spot in the USA. The Brewery is set inside an airplane hangar-like building that is home to a huge restaurant, a humongous bar, and an eight-lane bowling alley, with its own separate bar.Grant sat in his car in Las Vegas to record this interview, how is that for dedication. He shared some many great stories and insights on being "all-in" on craft beer, including:* The story of their original brewer was faster at raising funds than them, and left to do his own thing before they could get started; but * How he helped them find his own replacement, who found his own replacement, who eventually stayed; * The open and honest feedback they got that changed their entire beer menu; * The plethora of collaboration options in San Diego; and * Beating the Mexican breweries at their own game with a beer that was actually a mistake.
Grant is a great story teller who was very generous with his time during the interview, and afterwards when our audio files got lost on the interwebs!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealerhttps://www.masonaleworks.comhttp://www.3localbrothers.com/
So it seems that the beer lovers of Western Australia really love their beer, and I mean REALLY REALLY love their beer. I reached out to my listeners recently about what they wanted to hear more of on the Beer Healer Interviews, and the WA message rang through loud and clear…"We want to know more about the WA breweries and the people behind them".My guest on this episode is Reece Weadon, the founder of an Urban Brewery in WA called Nowhereman. Reece was once the Director of WA Beer Week, but almost 3 years ago he jumped in to the craft beer game even deeper in opening up Nowhereman.Nowhereman is not your basic brew pub, they are a lot of intricate details that go to make up the overall experience for their clientele, but I will let Reece explain. In this episode we talk about:* some of the things he would have changed with his brew house, if he had the space; * how he might now create that space with renovation; * his advice for brew pub dreamers; * brewing collaboration beers with local venues; * how they brewed a lager from the start to take on Emu Export; * the importance of having great people around you; and * how the WA Craft Beer scene has changed.
Enjoy the episode!
If you are a craft beer lover and have been to Hobart, you would most likely have visited one of the original craft beer hot spots on the waterfront, Preachers bar. That’s pretty much where Chris Cooper began his foray into the world of craft beer, as co-owner of that establishment. With other friends and business partners, Chris continues to operate a number of venues and bottle shops, but maybe his crowning achievement was taking a chance on this thing called craft beer and opening the Last Rites Brewery. That was 2015, and nearing on 5 years later, the start up brewery has grown to be one of the larger independent breweries in Tasmania.Never ones to take themselves too seriously, Chris and his mates run their brewery with a real sense of fun, most visible in the naming of their beers. But don’t mistake that humour for not taking the business side of the operation seriously, these guys are running a very successful operation. In this open and honest chat, Chris talks about the fun that he and his mates have had in opening the brewery, as well as some of the challenges. They recognise they had been coasting along in recent times, focusssing on other parts of the business, but it is now time to zero in on Last Rites with brand refresh and a new sense of vigour for pumping out great beer.
In this episode, it's all about the equipment! Once again I have Dave Padden from Akasha, and From Ben's, Ben Miller joining me in the discussion. We discuss how we got started, our previous kits and what we are currently brewing on. Dave talks about his brewery and making the step up from his Gatorade eski. Ben talks us through his Semi-Pro setup, and I talk about my Braumeister...even the old Brewie gets a mention (and a few laughs). We talk about the most important tools, reminisce about some great equipment hacks and as usual, the boys offer up a bit of advice for brewers at all levels.
Strap on your seat belts pod casters, this episode covers a lot of ground! For those of you who know the name Mazen Hajjar know that he is never afraid to speak his mind and he doesn’t take life too seriously…a great mix for having a great conversation about something we both love, craft beer. If you don’t know Mazen, you need to take a long hard look at yourself. The Middle Eastern born, new Australian is the heart and soul of Victorian brewery Hawkers. He’s an entrepreneur, a visionary, a bit of a hustler, and now he is an Aussie we can also call him a shit stirrer!!Mazen has a lot to talk about on this episode…raising funds for fire victims with Christian O’Connell, a new collaboration with 3 Weavers, how his brewers biggest mistake became one of their success stories, and a big Crowd Funding plan.
If you like what I am doing here, please like, subscribe, follow and share the podcast to help me spread these stories far and wide!On this episode, I speak with one time IT Nerd, Grum Knight. He gave away the IT game many years ago and chased his dreams of opening a brewery...and EXIT Brewing was born!He cut his teeth as a part of the Cavalier Brewing posse that included a bunch of brewers now at the helm of breweries across the country. A few years down the track he is at a point where he has to do more than just make great beer with his best mate, Frase. Now there are things like a Brand Refresh to consider and plans to keep collecting those AIBA medals.A great chat with a bloke who has had a great career to date.
Last chance to contribute to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3Q9285DRichard Watkins, the Godfather of Canberra brewing and Co-Founder of Bentspoke Brewing, has been on the tools for almost 25 years. In that time, he has seen it all and has a few stories to share. In this episode, we talk about how he created the Hoppinator, his love of the Brew Pub model, advice on starting a brewery, Bentspoke Wild Ales and Australia's 3rd favourite beer for the 3rd year in a row...Crankshaft IPA!It's been a tough few weeks for the community of Canberra with the bush fires, and Bentspoke have been heavily involved assisting in the fund raising efforts, so I really appreciate the time Richard took to have a chat with me.
Survey Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3Q9285DFriend of the show and one of my favourite guests, Zoe Ottaway is back to discuss the latest beer trend (according to BWS) to hit the market, Lifestyle Products.Has it really just arrived? Will it be a fad or become a trend? And what about those 0% beers, will they catch on in the craft beer market.Zoe answers these questions and more as we discuss some amazing product failures from the past and talk about what may be coming down the line. And Zoe provides a bazillion insights (yes, really, i counted) on all things craft beer marketing.
Survey Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3Q9285DThis episode is for anyone interested in travelling a different path in the craft beer industry!Speciation Artisan Ales (https://speciationartisanales.com/) is based in Michigan, USA. Mitch Ermatinger founded the company on a shoe string budget with his wife Whitney, after having paid his dues in a number of jobs that would later hold him in good stead as he became "Mr Everything" at the brewery. This is a story of pragmatic decision making, doing the best you can with what you have and chasing a dream to make awesome beers form the natural surrounds. Mitch also found a unique way to have a tap room without needing a tap room, while also building hype around his beers...it's genius!if you are wanting to start your own small brewery, love wild ales, or appreciate cool ideas and thinking outside the square...this episode is for you!

On this episode of the beer healer interviews, I am pleased to say that despite significant connection problems with New Zealand, I am able to bring you this interview with Behemoth Brewing owner, brewer and resident giant, Andrew Childs.
Apparently all of New Zealand was watching Netflix on the night of our interview and it caused all sorts of problems for us…even resulting in me finishing the interview on my own!
This is the story of a gypsy brand shaking things up on both sides of the Tasman with their cheeky beer names and labels, and by brewing amazing beer. There are big changes coming for Behemoth, so I thought it would be a great time to find out more about their plans!
Enjoy!
So this one is for all of you who have dreams of trying to turn your hobby into some kind of business. Listen up...it's pretty hard work!Sam Attwater, ex-pro brewer and now resident brewing expert at Cheeky Peaks Home Brew Store in Victoria, has a dream of taking his very popular Home Brewing Instagram account and turning it in to an online resource for all things home brewing, and hopefully being able to make a living in doing so.In this episode there is a special offer for all of you awesome listeners...listen for the secret code and then visit this link to activate it: https://www.homebrewfanatics.com/courses/digital-resource
If you are a craft beer lover and have visited Hobart, Tasmania…chances are you have made your way to a little pub called The Winston. With it great American inspired food and awesome range of beers, it is home to a unique cross section of the population. Kris Miles is the man behind the beers, he brews many of them own the road at The Winston Brewing Co…you see the Winston is actually a brew pub!But now it’s time for a new brewery…and this is his story. In this episode we talk about:· What it’s like to brew in a small town;· The benefits of the brew pub model;· What he is learning about shifting his brewery;· How he almost lost his brew kit and had to work with other brewers to find containers full of gear in China;· And how one of Australia’s favourite beers, Philter XPA, began it’s life in Hobart.
Craft beer lovers, we need to talk about a serious issue (over a few beers maybe).GLOBALLY, ON AVERAGE, 1 MAN DIES BY SUICIDE EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.Luckily for us men, the Movember movement is hoping to do something about this statistic. This month, Mo Brothers, supported by Mo Sistas, are raising funds by growing an itchy, annoying, and sometimes patchy clump of hair on their top lip! These funds will help men in their battle against Mental Illness and other men's health issues.Movember Co-Founder, Travis Garone, joined me for a chat on a podcast that I record for my day job at LiveTiles. I thought it would be a great idea to kill two birds with one stone and record some extra content after our interview, as he is a big craft beer fan. I then spliced together the beer content with the best bits from the more serious (yet entertaining) discussion I recorded for work...the result, a mash up LiveTiles Beer Healer Interview! If you have a friend who is struggling, let them know you support them, and if you think they might get something out of this chat with Trav, please share it with them.https://au.movember.com/https://www.livetiles.nyc/https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
If you have been to Bali, you would know that craft beer options are few and far between. Mattia Di Bittonto is hoping to change that by starting a one man craft beer revolution. Is he mad? Maybe? You can be the judge of that! Is he passionate? Definitely! I can vouch for that. And his beers are great! In this episode he tells his story about taking a chance and just giving it a red hot crack! If you are heading over any time soon, Mattia would love you to pay him a visit. Hit him up on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/blacksandbrewery/
The energiser bunny of the Hawaiian brewing scene is back with more weird and wacky ideas on how to make beer from his natural surroundings. Yep, forests, volcanoes and the edge of the earth...nothing stops Steve in his search for amazing ingredients for his beers.
In this episode he talks about:* Brewing beer with strawberries foraged from the side of an active volcano;
* How he successfully cultivated yeast from the edge of the atmosphere to produce a beer to celebrate NASA's 50th anniversary
* Tips for home brewers who want to start their journey into creating wild ales; and
* And how he is bringing his Hawaiian Wild Ales to Australia this week!
A great chat with someone who is truly pushing the boundaries in craft brewing!
In this episode, I paid a visit to my old mate Andrew at Batch Brewing. After a pint of my favourite WCIPA, he suggested we take a drive out the new "Small Batch" brewery at Petersham...which I of course accepted. There has been a lot going on at Batch since we spoke last...co-founder Chris has returned to the USA but has found a way to be able to work remotely, and Andrew has been busy fulfilling the plans the boys had to start a small experimental brewery "just around the corner".I was keen to share a beer with Andrew to find our what kind of flexibility the new venue will give them, what beers and collaborations they had on the horizon and exactly how stressful it is starting a second brewery. Even though they had done it all before, there was still a lot to learn when doing it all again. As usual, he is pretty open and honest about what's been happening, and shares some news about a festival they are involved with, and their plans for the summer.
One of the nicest blokes you will meet in the industry...that's how Dave Padden was described to me.And, yep, they were right. I had an absolute ripping time interviewing Dave and finding out about such things as:* How Akasha, sorta, kinda, not really, started out as a Gypsy brewing operation; * How Craft Brewing is the passion he never thought he would find (wifey excepted); * Why he chose the random suburb of 5 Dock to set up shop; * What he found out the back of a Kansas City petrol station; and * His love for big hair rock!
A great fun interview that I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did recording it.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealerhttps://www.akashabrewing.com.au/
I don't think Dave Bonighton really needs any introduction, does he?You know him as the Co-Founder of Mountain Goat, but he is more than that...yet another trailblazer who has helped to shape the craft beer landscape in this country, and I was so excited to have him as my guest on the 50th episode of The Beer Healer Interviews.Dave was an absolute pleasure to interview, such a great bloke. As usual, we went off on a few tangents, which is what I love most about recording these interviews!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
This one is for all of you who had/have a dream of taking their love of craft beer to the next level! Maybe you have made it and now cal your hobby your job, or maybe you are still trying to find a way to make your dream a reality...either way, you will love hearing Ben's story. He may give you some ideas for how to take the next step, or you may nod your head in agreement when he details some of the speed bumps he has hit along the way. This is as authentic as it comes...home brewer turning pro, bit by bit, while trying to make ends meet working a day job as a truck driver.Whether you love a good beer story, or can relate to his experiences, there is a bit of something in this for everyone...From Ben.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
On this episode I talk with Award Winning Journalist and qualified Cicerone, James Atkinson who now produces the the Drinks Adventures Podcast. There are so many people who have given so much to the craft beer industry in Australia, and I am really enjoying celebrating their careers and sharing their stories with you, and James is yet another one who has been helping to promote the industry for the past few decades.James was previously the editor at Australian Brews News and The Shout, he has written for many other food and beverage publications and in 2017 he won the AIBA Media Prize. These days, Drinks Adventures keeps him busy as he explores drinks of all styles. Has he lost his love of beer? Is Sake his new love? And is he a folder or a roller? All of these hard hitting questions and answers and a few stories thrown in for good measure!https://www.facebook.com/byjamesatkinson/https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I am going to be honest with you...before doing this podcast with Ben Joseph from WA's Beer Farm, I didn't know much about them...you will understand what I mean when Ben sets me straight on who does and doesn't work with him!Having said that, I am so glad that I got the chance to talk with Ben, as their story is a really interesting one...from starting life as a planned Young Henry's Western Australian base to now becoming a fully sustainable operation with a killer water slide. As I said, it's a pretty cool story...oh, and beer, yeah they brew some pretty awesome beer! But don't let me spoil it for you...find out for yourself!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Will Tatchell from Van Dieman Brewing is back to talk about funky fermentations, barrel ageing beautiful beers and pushing the boundaries of farmhouse brewing.
Will recently celebrated 10 years of Van Dieman Brewing, and it has been a very busy year. He released a super-sized version of his stout, the Giblin X, a barrel aged beast rocking in at 10-ish percent, which has been vert well received. But better than that, Will’s dreams of producing beers completely off the land surrounding is farm has finally come true. In the last 18 months he has shared Max, Edward and Oscar with the beer world…3 beers brewed with all estate grown ingredients an indigenous yeast.
But not wanting to stop there, he has now gone next level, created a new beer category, Australian Spontaneous Ales, and released his first two beers in the category…Long Shadows and Unpredictable Spring. These beers are fermented in Cool Ships…not your everyday method of fermentation.
This episode is for the brewing nerds who want to know more about what this trailblazer is doing with funky yeasts and quirky fermentation methods.

For this episode, I welcomed Australia’s First Lady of beer to the conversation, Kirrily Waldhorn.Kirrily’s contribution to beer industry is impressive, with over 17 years of involvement, she has literally been involved in every part of the industry. She is an educator, a writer beer judge, trainer and occasionally an assistant brewer. An experienced media performer, having worked in radio and tv and the press and on stage at GABS with her beer and food cooking series, she knows her stuff!Another episode where I get to pay homage to the people who have helped shape the industry that I love. This is a bit of a longer episode, as both of us love a chat, and I think neither of us really wanted it to end...such a fun chat.Kirrily shares her thoughts on changing the hearts and minds of mainstream beer drinkers, recalls stories form the past, like the time she was only 1 of 4 women in a room of 400 men at a Lion beer conference, and professes her love for the Tasmanian craft beer scene.Ladies and gentlemen...I give you, The Beer Diva!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
This episode is another one where I tip the cap to those who helped to shape the craft beer industry for all of us to enjoy. The Australia Craft Beer scene is littered with stories of people leaving safe and secure jobs to try something new, to start new business, follow a new career path and generally throw caution to the wind to follow their craft beer dream.James Smith is one of those people…although he has kind of been pursuing his dream of spreading the craft beer gospel since he began his career as a freelance writer with the Age. James has done a lot of things in the industry…founded Good Beer Week, written two and a half books on the great beers of Australia, and probably most importantly, runs arguably to most influential craft beer website in Australia…The Crafty Pint.In this episode, we chat about:* How things began for Crafty; * Great beer experiences; * Taking pain killers for a back injury that make you write great books; * The recent poll to award the best new beers of 2019; and * How working in the industry and loving beer might be a recipe for over indulging;
A legend of the industry who does love a chat...enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I was in Sydney for work this week and decided to have a cheeky pint at the Lord Nelson Hotel at lunchtime.
The Lord is, of course, the house that Blair Hayden built, so it was only right that while I was there I sat down with the great man for a chat.
In this episode we take a bit of a walk down memory lane. I really enjoyed this chat with Blair...he is no bullshit and very passionate about the industry...enjoy!!

Mention the name Tim Fishwick around the craft beer industry and I reckon you will get a nod from the person you are speaking with. Why, well by all accounts he’s a good bloke and let’s be honest, he’s been around the traps a bit…in a good way though.Tim’s career has seen him go from flogging pallets of Tooheys to being involved in a number of smaller craft breweries. He’s been a Creature and a member of the all conquering team at Balter, but for some reason earlier this year he decided to walk away from hanging out with the lads on the Goldy and do his own thing. There’s been a few whispers about what he has been up to in recent months, and we had to put this podcast off to make sure everything was all progressing and he could actually speak about it.So in a world exclusive, Tim Fishwick would like to let the world in on his "secret" plans to start a brewery!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
The craft beer landscape continues to change at a rapid pace. We are still seeing new breweries popping up every other week, some have sadly closed, and the number of new beers hitting bottleshop shelves is out of control. So how do breweries cut through the clutter in a crowded market, and more importantly remain relevant in the eyes of a very promiscuous drinker base? For well established brand, Stone & Wood, their approach has been to diversify their offerings and as such they have created a number of other brands within the Stone and Wood family…Fixation, Forest for the Trees and Counter Culture. All of these sub brands explore different elements of brewing and allow the company to try new ideas and reach those drinkers who are always looking for the next big thing.NPD Manager Sam Martin and Creative and Community Manager Jasmin Daly join me for this entertaining and informative chat!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Grab a beer, sit back and relax and enjoy this great chat with Pro Surfer, Brewery Owner, and seriously chilled dude, Bede Durbidge. If you didn't know it, relationships make the world go round. Whether it be when you are at starting out at school, in your social circles as you grow up, or as you move into the business world. The relationships you strike up help you through the bad times, allow you to share the good times, and open up so many other opportunities and experiences.Bede Durbidge went from went from surfing the biggest waves on the planet to riding the craft beer wave in Australia as one of the group of mates who started Balter Brewing Company. In this interview he tells the real story about how the band of Balter brothers came together to take on the world of craft beer.In this interview, Bede is open and honest about:* How his tragic accident almost killed him; * Learning to walk again with the help of his family and friends; * Mick Fanning's reaction to Bede nervously asking him to be part of the plan; * Converting Scotty Hargrave to a believer in his vision; and * The part that beer played in keeping him sane on the pro surfing sidelines.
And listen to the end...Bede may just be the guy I need to get Chris Hemsworth on the podcast!!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
For this episode, I wanted to turn the focus on to a couple of blokes who have been an integral part of the Australian beer scene for the better part of two decades. Each week, Matt Kirkegaard and Pete Mitcham pump out content via various different channels, updating the Australian beer world on the latest news. They are well known within in the industry, but always asking the questions of their guests, so I thought it would be fun to flip things around and put them on the other side of the conversation and find out more about their experiences in the beer world. This chat really covers some ground…hence the 90 minute running time!We take a look back at how it all started for the boys, what they have seen change over the years, their proudest moments in their careers and the sacrifices they have made, literally for the love of this liquid we call beer. There is a lot of laughs, some old man speak (“Lets not over egg that pudding?”), and a bit of patting each other on the back…Matt struggles to be the guest at the start, looking to drive the conversation until I pull him into line!! We lose Prof for a while as Matt deep dives into a few memories and then he pops back up to add the cream to Matt’s answer.A thoroughly enjoyable chat that could have gone a lot longer…I did try to wind it up around 60 minutes and it went for 30 more!I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I did recording it.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Have your beer and eat it too…That is the mantra of The Beeroness, otherwise known as Jackie Dodd-Mallory. She is a beer loving wonder chef, or maybe she is a food loving beer nerd, I am not sure, but either way she is a social media queen of beer, with over 45,000 social media followers.Jackie has a unique ability to make me want to cook her dishes every time she shares them on social media. Some of her recent creations include Beer Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwiches, Spicy Beer Pulled Pork Stuffed Sweet Potatoes and Oatmeal Stout Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars…am I making you hungry.Jackie has been doing he thing since 2011, so there isn’t much she hasn’t done with a good bottle of beer and an amazing recipe to accompany it.In this episode we talk about living in "Beer Heaven", not requiring a penis to know stuff about beer, and how Jackie thinks of beer ingredients as an extension of her mixing bowl when writing her recipes...an interesting way of thinking about it!Enjoy my chat with Jackie...she is amazing!!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Two brothers…one a scientist with 15+ years experience in cell biology, the other a qualified mechanical engineer…naturally those skills translate into starting an All-Australian yeast provider for the craft beer industry.I fell across the guys from Bluestone Yeast thanks to one of my social media followers and after the reaction to my recent chat with Dr Tom Shellhammer about hops, I thought you the listener would love an in depth chat about yeast. Those lovely little microbes that are thrown into beers all around the world and convert the sugars in wont into alcohol and little bubbles of CO2 are pretty complex little beasties. On this episode, the co-owners of Bluestone Yeast, the Lacey Brothers, join me to talk all things yeast!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
On this podcast I try to speak to people from all over the craft beer landscape…brewers, marketers, sale people, both here and overseas. So when an email hit my inbox last week from the Boys at Beer Cartel, with a link to the Ultimate Aussie Top 50 Beers list, I thought that I should reach out to today's guest and ask him to come and have a chat on the podcast.Geoff Huens co-founded Beer Cartel in 2009 and has been driving excellence in the online craft beer game ever since. Geoff tells the story of how Beer Cartel started in the corner of his apartment and the changes he has seen in the industry since they began, plus let's us in on some insights from the Ultimate Aussie Top 50 Beers list he has collated.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Batch Brewing Company is in the heart of the Craft Beer mecca known as the inner west of Sydney. Taking a look at the local area these days, you will see over ten breweries littered around the suburbs in that area, but back in 2013 when Batch opened its doors, the numbers were more like 2 or 3.Fast forward 6 years and Batch is embarking on a new era for the company, with a second site almost ready to open, one of the founders returning to his homeland, and lots of new challenges in what has become a pretty crowded beer market.Andrew Fineran, also known as Chuck ,and Chris Sidwa, two ex-pat Americans began with a dream back in 2011 or so…they wanted to brew great beer for the people and start a true community brewery. Being that Andrew was a marketer for Lion Beer at the time and Chris was wrapped up in the world of high finance, they had all the skills they needed to make great beer…or so they thought. In this episode we take a bit of a look back at the past, the lessons learned and the mistakes made, and how they learned from those to create a thriving community brewery. We also take a look into the future as the boys embark on an exciting new era with a new venue that will help them get back to what made them successful...creating small batch beers, and many of them!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
The Australian International Beer Awards were held during Good Beer Week in Melbourne, and the who's who of the Australian beer industry was all in the one room...and I had a new toy to play with, a mobile recording device...and so was born Roaming Beer Healer! In this episode I do my best to navigate around the crowded and noisy room to talk to some of my friends in the industry, past podcast guests and most importantly, the award winners!Emotions were running high, there was a lot of love in the room, and people were speaking from the heart!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
When I started this podcast, I wanted to make sure I was telling the great stories of the craft beer industry...you know, have a crack at doing my best journalist impression. I felt that with no-one else to bounce conversations around with, and many others already doing very well with the format of having fun discussions over beers, I would take the story telling angle. But every now and then, an opportunity presents itself to try something a little different...and so was born the idea for this episode.Joining me for a round table chat over the interwebs is Ex-Hopco employee and man about the brewing world, Jon Burridge, and Klimt Donohoe, co-founder of the next big thing in the Tasmanian beer scene, Spotty Dog and one third of the Step Brewers podcast. In this episode we take a stab at who we think will be walking away with the AIBA Champion Trophys at this years awards and the boys provide us with some insights into the industry and what is going on.And for those of you concerned, The Beer Healer Interviews will return to it's regularly scheduled program format soon!Apologies for the quality of my individual sound feed on this episode...unbeknownst to me, my microphone died at the start of the interview and so my whole conversation was recorded by my crappy laptop microphone.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I've been doing this Beer Healer thing across multiple social media platforms for about 4 years now. I thought I knew a little bit about the world of Social Media...until my guest on this podcast set me straight on a few things.Mariella Mejia is a one time freelance marketer who now runs a Digital Marketing agency called Made With Moxie. Made with Moxie is a digital commerce and paid media agency that growth hacks businesses and sells out events, with a real focus on Social Media and Digital Strategy. She has an impressive list of clients, both in and out of the beer industry, working on some pretty cool social media campaigns, including one with Henry Rollins and Mercedes Benz.Mariella knows a lot about Social Media, she is currently working with Good Beer Week and having great success with it. Our chat covers the do's and dont's of social media, busts a few myths that I well and truly believed, and offers some great tips for anyone looking to really ramp up their social media efforts. If you are after some real world insights and advice on running your social media account, you have come to the right place!Enjoy!http://www.madewithmoxie.com.au/https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Brewers of all ages, and experience levels, have a listen to Dr Tom Shelhammer drop some pearls of wisdom about hops in this episode.Dr Shelhammer was in Tasmania to conduct a session at the Fresh Hop Beer Festival in Launceston, and as luck would have it, he was staying only a few minutes from my home. I took that as a sign that the Beer Gods wanted me to have a chat with him for the podcast! An expert on all things hops, Dr Shellhammer recently released a piece of ground-breaking research on factors Impacting Aroma, Flavour and Stability in Dry-Hopped Beers, something that I think all brewers, both home and pro would love to know more about. In this interview, among other things, we discuss the details of his research paper, including:* When Dry Hopping, More is not always More; * Does Dry Hopping really add bitterness; and * The phenomenon known as “Hop Creep”
I was absolutely blown away by his depth and breadth of knowledge on hops and brewing techniques, and I think you will be too!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
There are some amazing beers being brewed in Queensland these days. Only a few years ago, the craft beer scene in the Sunshine State was pretty quiet, but all of a sudden there are new breweries and pubs popping up all over the place. Slowly but surely these new kids on the block are converting local drinkers to new flavoursome beers, and tap banks in local pubs now have other options outside of the big brewers mainstream mid-strength options. My guest was once the head of one of the largest craft beer brands in the country. Backed by an army of sales people, marketing assistants and plenty of cash, he turned his back on that life and moved North to the Sunshine State. It must have been the promise of sun and surf, and a massive market full of opportunities to convert drinkers over to the wonderful world of craft beer that saw him leave behind the spoils of working for a beer brand with serious muscle behind it.Ash Cranston was the Marketing Manager of Little Creatures for 4 years, and previously managed their dining hall for another 4 years…so he knows a few things about selling beers to punters. So why did he leave? What has he learned in building a big brewery from scratch? And why did he choose to put in a bottling, not a canning line, like the cool kids are doing? All of this, and more advice for new brewery builders...https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I met my guest at one of the world's smallest beer festivals...From the Wilderness, in Evandale, Tasmania. On a holiday with his partner Nadia, somehow Rick Bennie managed to convince her to spend their final day in Tasmania at a beer festival two hours away from their camping spot. And they had an early wake-up the next morning to go home on the boat. Something tells me this guy is a dedicated craft beer nut!Rick is actually a brewer from Blackmans Brewery and I asked him to come on the podcast to talk about the path he took to become a brewer, his career to date, and the options for brewers in terms of careers in the local and even international market.I enjoyed our conversation in the sun, sipping on some Farmhouse Ales, and I thought that others would like to hear his story, or maybe some of you out there are thinking of a career in brewing and need some help getting started.Whatever the case, I really hope you enjoy the conversation with Rick as much as I did!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
The idea for this episode came from a chat I had with The Beer Pilgrim about Beer Tourism. He had so many great stories from his travels and I wondered if some of the people I interact with on social media had some too...and they did!In this episode, Matt King recounts his trip down the Murray River drinking fresh IPA from kegs supplied by the local brewery, Nigel Ayling takes us back to the 80's when he discovered the some amazing beers while backpacking around Europe, and finally, Steve Kirton tells us about his recent trip to San Diego. This is the first of what I hope will be many episodes where I invite some of you on to tell craft beer stories from your travels. If you have a story, reach out to me on Facebook or beerhealer@internode.on.nethttps://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Good Beer Week began in 2011 with the first festival being thrown together by a very small team of beer lovers in a few week, which resulted in over 50 events in 40 venues in Melbourne, Victoria. Showcasing the social, flavoursome and diverse world of, the event was a huge success and continues to grow year on year.In just eight years, Good Beer Week has grown from the spark of an idea to a global festival made up of more than 300 diverse and innovative events across Melbourne and Victoria that attracts seventy five thousand attendees from across Australia and overseas. It is heralded as one of the great beer events of the world, culminating in the Australian International Beer Awards at the Great Australia Beer Spectapular at the end of the week. Good Beer Week’s goal is to become the largest and most professional beer festival in the Asia Pacific, and I would say they are well on their way.In this episode I talk with Good Beer Week's Program Manager, Luke Robertson (also known for being the creator of Ale of A Time and author of Keg, Bottle, Can) about some of his favourite upcoming events in the 2019 Good Beer Week Program. He also shares his his favourite memories from the past 8 years and gives me some advice for my first trip to Good Beer Week this year.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Stu Grant from Ocho Beer comes across as a pretty quiet guy, but bloody hell, he loves a chat. He is also a massive beer nerd...so I guess that makes my job easy a craft beer podcast host!Stu has spent the last few years working by day with Will Tatchell at Van Dieman Brewing producing some great beers, and then metaphorically, by night, he puts on his crazy scientist lab coat and goes to work on producing some amazing experimental beers. In 2016 Ocho beer was born in the back of the Van Dieman brewery. Looking to do something different with their beers, their first year saw them release varieties such as a barrel aged saison, a wild fermented IPA and beer made with Chardonnay grapes…not the typical beers you expect form a small startup brewery. They also took a different route to market, preferring to initially sell all their beer via their website. For the last few years, Ocho has been creating some great experimental beers and is now firmly in the conversation with other cool kids in the Aussie industry right now.In this interview, Stu shares some EXCLUSIVE NEWS about the future and talks about:* Being fascinated by fermentation; * Making cider on the family farm in his early teens; * How he "accidentally" made a sour stout; * How to release a core beer, that changes four times a year; * How Tassie could be the next Bend, Oregon; and * The art of making a good Pilsner.

A few years ago, the wife and I took the kids on a family holiday to Vietnam. It was such a great experience for us all, the sights, the sounds the unique food and of course the amazing people. Before taking my trip I did a bit of research and found out that the was a pretty cool little craft beer scene beginning to bubble up to the surface over there, so I decided to do what I could to hijack my family holiday for the sake of craft beer. One of the items on my list was to visit a brewery I had read about called Pasteur St Brewing. Their mantra seemed cool, combine American Brewing techniques with the local produce to make great craft beer. One sip of the Pasteur St Jasmine IPA was all it took for me to fall in love with the Vietnamese craft beer scene…The man behind that beer, Alex Violette, was head brewer at Upslope Brewing in Colorado at the time that John Reid, Pasteur’s founder pitched the idea to him. Alex loved it and moved to Saigon to begin a new brewing adventure. Very early on in the piece, Mischa Smith, knew he had to get in on the action of spreading craft beer love in Vietnam. He started as a volunteer behind the bar, being paid in beer and now he is Pasteurs St’s Brand Ambassador.5 years and 200+ beers later, Pasteur St Brewing now has 4 tap Rooms and has nationwide distribution. It’s been 3 years since I was in Vietnam and I was keen to find out how the scene is going in Vietnam, so I invited the guys on to talk all things Vietnamese Craft Beer.In this interview, Alex, Mischa and I try our best to keep things on track as we discuss such things as:* How Pasteur St came to be; * Making beers with local ingredients and winning awards for it; * The perception that Vietnamese palates would be different to the western world; * How the craft beer culture is Vietnam borrows from their well established coffee culture; * When we will see their beers in Australia again; and * Making beer that smells like farts!

This episode was recorded on location at Van Dieman Brewing, where I was attending the "From The Wilderness" Beer Festival, a celebration of the art of Farmhouse Brewing. My guests, Head Brewer Evan Hunter, and his partner and Brewery Sales & Promotions Manager, Steph Schrodka, are the dynamic duo behind the Bruny Island Beer Co. Now in it’s 5th year of operation, this little brewery on a small island in the deep south of Tasmania is very unique…they use open top fermenters and their brew kit is manufactured from old dairy farming equipment.Evan and Steph are knowledgeable, passionate and fun…lots of fun. In this episode I do my best to get them to let me in on their brewery secrets, which leads to some awkward moments and a lot of laughing! I also pick Evans brain about wet hops and farmhouse ales, Steph talks about selling their first beers and her love of fresh hop beers. We also discuss the challenges of having a brewery along side a cheesery and a bakery with microbes flying all around their open top fermenters!A fun and interesting chat, enjoy it!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Back when I was still working in the industry, and the numbers of beer bloggers, reviewers and podcasters were much lower than what we have today, there was this blonde haired surfie looking dude that used top pop up on the interwebs here and there, going buy the name The Beer Pilgrim. His real name is Tim Charody and 7 or so years and 32,000 facebook followers later, he is still at it.An engaging presenter who has traveled far and wide sharing his adventures with his followers, some how he has managed to live this amazing adventure and still be able to put food on the table.Being a fan of working in craft beer activities on my family holidays, I thought I would invite Tim on to talk about his experiences in beer tourism,You are in for a real treat with this episode...Tim is one of those blokes that you can just ask a question to and he just runs with it, in all directions! In this episode, we talk about:* The amazing Italian Craft Beer Scene and how he me what I would call "The Dude" of Italian Craft Beer; * How important Beer Trails are for tourism; * Belgium being his favourite beer vacation; * How he manages to work craft beer into all of this work trips; * Tips for beer travelers; and * His upcoming Ultimate West Coast of American Beer Trip that you can join him on!

A few of my earlier podcasts featured marketers who provided insight and advice on the tricky practice of taking an amazing liquid to the consumer and getting them to hand over their hard earned cash to drink it. This podcasts were very popular, and so I decided to invite another experience marketer on to have a chat about the industry and answer a few questions from some of my social media followers. One time drummer in a rock band, Jessie Jungalwalla, spent time in Canada working as a graphic designer for Big Rock in Vancouver, eventually working her way up to running events and experiences for them. She is a certified cicerone, a home brewer and a huge fan of craft beer, so when she returned home to Australia it seemed only natural that she would find a way to combine her passion for craft beer with her design skills.Jessie company, Craft instinct, is a brand development and design service specialising in the craft beverage industry. They have worked with well known brands such as The Crafty Pint, Blackmans Brewery and Pink Boots Australia.Jessie was such a delight to talk with, she has an infectious laugh and knows her stuff!Enjoy!PS - She has a new website in development, but if you are looking for Jessie, you can find her at http://www.craftinstinct.com/https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
The craft beer world is littered with stories of people starting breweries after falling in love with creating amazing liquids, including Agi Gagic, head brewer at Sparkke. But the difference with Agi’s brewery is that it’s not just about the love of the beer, you see Sparkke is driven by something greater, the need for social change. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, Sparkke was launched in 2017. Founders Rose Kentish, an award wining winemaker and Kari Allen, a highly regarded international marketer, along with Agi describe themselves as social activists, who also happen to run a alcoholic beverage company.Agi is in charge of creating the beers in slogan covered cans that seem to be striking a chord with the consumers who are looking for an authentic beer brand that shares their values.I was initially a bit nervous about talking to Agi, I thought I might be a bit out of my league! I need not have worried, as Agi was an absolute pleasure to talk to and shared so many insights into her world of influencing social change one beverage at a time!Enjoy the chat.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
My guest in this episode, Dave MacGill from Moo Brew, is a pillar of the brewing community in Tasmania and has worked for over a decade in one of the first craft breweries established in the state.Moo Brew appeared in local bottleshops and high end grocery stores in 2005, selling its flavoursome ales in fancy bottles with labels designed by artist John Kelly…it’s fair to say that it was a little bit of a shock to the traditional mainstream drinker in Tasmania who were used to picking between the Draught Beer from either the North or the South of the state. But somehow it worked, and drinkers began enjoy what a Pale Ale should be, how a true Pilsener tasted and the joys that could be found in a Dark Ale. After helping to establish Moo Brew, Dave moved to Melbourne for a few years where he set up Temple Brewery. In 2013, he returned to Tasmania, and Moo Brew, to take up the position of General Manager and lead the now well established brewery into the future in a very competitive market.Dave has been heavily involved in the Aussie brewing industry for many years in many different capacities, brewer, general manager and Vice President of the Tassie Independent Brewers Association.Enjoy the episode!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
A young man with his head screwed on right, looking to ensure the future success of his family business by taking a chance on this thing called Craft Beer. That's how I would describe Hamish Coates from Rocky Ridge Brewing Co. in Western Australia. His brewery resides on land that has been passed down through his family for generations. Previously they farmed beef and dairy cattle, but with new times comes change, new challenges, and new ways to utilise the land for other purposes, like brewing craft beer! They describe it as a new perspective being applied to the land, but with the passion that has been part of their property for all these years.Passionate about how to sustain-ably utilise the environment around him to create amazing beers, this is a fantastic story of innovation, perseverance and that good old Aussie trait of "having a crack"!Enjoy the story of Hamish Coates and Rocky Ridge Brewing Co.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Steve Haumschild from Lanikai Brewing in Hawaii is a very inquisitive man with a real passion for his local environment. His island inspired beers are made with all sorts of fruits, flowers, nuts and yeasts hand foraged from the islands of Hawaii. The results are amazing, but this passionate brewer wants to push thing just that little bit further. It's here that NASA enters the picture, thanks to a chance meeting at a beer dinner, and after a few beers a plan was hatched to capture yeast from the edge of space...70,000ft in the air! In this episode he explains how he is making the space yeast project a reality. We also talk about the wild yeasts he is collecting from volcanoes, forests and fields from all over Hawaii, how 98% of beer sold in Hawaii is made off the island, and hiscollaborations with brewers in the Pacific North West. Steve also talks about some potential plans to export into Australia, something that should please listeners in my home country.Steve is a talented brewer and a great story teller, so sit back, relax and have a listen!https://www.lanikaibrewing.com https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
When I started this podcast, my aim was to tell stories from all different points of view. Whether they be Marketers, or Sales People or Brewers. And that goes for people working in all breweries, big, small, independent or otherwise…the one thing that unites us is our love of beer.My guest on this podcast, Chris Sheehan, is an absolute ripping bloke with many years of brewing experience, but I feel like he doesn't really receive enough credit for his achievement. Why? Well, he works for a big brewer, Lion Beer in Australia, and we all know the stigma that carries in some circles within the industry. However, the interesting thing about him is he currently works in their smallest brewery, The Eumundi Brewery, which is pretty much a brew pub run out of the Imperial Hotel. So yeah, cool story, smallest brewery inside a big beer operation...sounds like a bit of a contradiction, doesn't it? Well, somehow he makes it work...so have a listen to his story.Enjoy!!BTW - this is my last episode for 2018...keep an ear out in early January for a couple of very special episodes to start the new year!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
On this podcast, I am trying to tell stories from all different viewpoints within the craft beer industry. Some people are well established, and have stories from their long careers, others are newer to the game, but still have stories to tell.Klimt Donohoe from Spotty Dog Brewers is something of a trail blazer in the Tasmanian brewing industry. I like to think of him as Tasmania’s version of Mikkeller! Klimt is a gypsy brewer who is producing great beers with the help of a couple of other breweries around the state. With plans in motion to have his own facility in the future, I thought it would be interesting to get Klimt in to talk about the things that are keeping him up at night, as well as the things he is most excited about as he takes the leap from Gypsy Brewer to Brewery Owner.Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Sometimes in business, the stars align, and a good idea is born at just the right time to take advantage of the current environment. That’s how I like to think of Philter Brewing. They have been called an overnight success, but I don’t think that is fair to the work done behind the scenes to ensure a successful launch…a bit like an iceberg with the majority of its mass sitting below the surface, unseen.Philter absolutely burst onto the scene in 2017, but it was no overnight success. It was a plan hatched by two mates over countless beers. They shared love of beer and had a multitude of marketing expertise between them, but they needed a brewer to complete their craft beer puzzle. Once they found her, they were ready to jump in the deep end for the love of beer.I invited my old workmate, Stef, onto the podcast to talk about the pro's and con's of contract brewing, how his experience in big beer has really helped him navigate the ultra competitive Aussie beer market, and how it all started in a small Hobart brewery.Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I often talk about my love for the craft beer world, a world that just continues to amaze me…this podcast kind of came from left field.Picture this, you head to a local bar to do a meet and greet with a co-founder of one of the most significant craft brewing entities, Greg Koch from Stone Brewing. Youstrike up a conversation with his wife, Sarah, and bond over showing each otherpictures of our cats on our phones! Yep, cats!!The conversation continued, and I found Sara's story really interesting, and I asked her if she would like to chat on my podcast when she returned home. She seemed prettykeen, and then said “well what are you up to tomorrow, we are free afterbreakfast and podcasts are a lot more fun in person”. She then turned to Greg and he was like, “yeah, we can do that”.And so that's how this episode came about, and I am sure glad it did. We talked about so many things that I ditched my 30-minute time limit for this episode. Greg and Sarasip on local Tasmanian beers as they profess their love for craft beer, andTasmania, get us up to date on their plans with Metallica, and talk about thebubbling craft beer scene in Shanghai…the location for their latest tap room .Many thanks to Greg and Sara, they made my year!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Hopco has been supplying Aussie brewers, both Pro and Home, with the best hops from their overseas partners since 2001. For the last 4 years or so, the man in charge of their Sales and Marketing has been Jon Burridge. So when I ran in to Jon at Black Hops Brewing while we were both holidaying, and he said he wanted to jump on my podcast to talk hops, I jumped at the chance.Jon and I both live in Hobart, so it seemed like a great idea for us to record this interview in my works podcast studio, until we covered it in a mix hop pellets and beer cork remnants...but I digress.In this episode, among other things, we talk about:* The benefits of fresh hops; * Supporting the home brew community; * Working with brewers to find the perfect hop; * The latest trends in hops; and * Dreaming of hop allocations for brewers;
Oh, and, we try to open up a Flanders Red Ale from Crux Fermentation with a Ryobi cordless drill!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Steve Henderson, or Hendo as he is known, is a doyen of the Australian craft beer scene. He has been brewing for over 10 years and has experienced it all in those times. He founded of Brewcult, was AIBA Champion Gypsy Brewer, won the GABS Peoples Choice Champion Beer and has brewed with Brewcult, Prickly Moses, Southern Bay and Stone and Wood. He has now started a new business, The Rockstar Brewer Academy, and is looking to share his experiences and help new and established brewers brew better beer.Steve and I got together one night, after I accidentally stood him up to watch the Bachelor finale with my wife and daughter. The good sport that he is, he forgave me and we had an amazing chat. We covered so much ground in 60 minutes (slightly over my usual limit), including:* Tips for starting a brewery; * Risks of being a gypsy brewer; * The importance of High Value/High Quality beers for surviving the game; * Hard decisions and the checkpoints for saving beers; * Social Media is not a Sales & Marketing plan; * Dangers of ignoring the "Craft" in Craft Beer; * Japanese Beer Festivals where all the beer is free; * If he has plans to brew again; and * Of course, the in's and out's of the Rockstar Brewer Academy.

"I think we should start our brewery, our first beer should be an eggnog stout, and let's launch it in the height of summer in the nations strongest macro mid strength lager market". After six pints of Fortitude Brewing's Admiral Ackbar, that's kind of how it all came together for the boys from Black Hops Brewing.I ditched my family at Sea World so that I could drive down to "Melrose Place" (Black Hops HQ) to have a chat with Michael McGovern, Co-Founder and Head Brewer. We chatted about their "overnight success" from Gypsy Brewers to AIBA Champions, taking epic beer trips to the USA, inviting home brew champions to collaborate, epiphany beers and their plans for the future with a big new brew house.Funnily enough, these guys are also chasing Chris Hemsworth for a beer...join the queue guys!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
You might not know the name Adrian Slaughter, but I am tipping you have heard about his brewery. You see, along with his school mate Marc Chrismas, Adrian is the co-owner of Green Beacon Brewing.Sparked by a love of craft beer in New York City and inspired by Penny, his Welsh Craft Brewing Mother-in-law, "The Beacon" was brought to life in the historic riverside inner city suburb of Teneriffe in the city of Brisbane, Queensland.Experimental HPA hops being smuggled to the USA for a collaboration with Pizza Port Brewing in California, advice for new breweries, the challenge of connecting with Queensland drinkers, benefits of the brew pub model, Beacon expansion plans, and my never ending quest to get Chris Hemsworth on this podcast...this episode has it all.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Ross Jurisich is one of the "three amigos" that in 2008 started the iconic Byron Bay Brewery, Stone and Wood.Ross is an icon in the industry, who has not only built a very successful business, but has helped many others in the industry to get started. As I found out, he has a way with words...you just have to listen to how he describes the drinking occasion that Pacific Ale was designed to compliment, you will feel like you are back in Byron Bay.In this episode, we talk about their "beer-o-meter" that helped them discover what beers they wanted to brew, their love of the Galaxy hop, their new brewery (that may not be their last) and those rumours that constantly surround them...yep I'm talking about the forth coming Pacific Ale cans.Ross also name-drops Matt Damon and Chris Hemsworth, the latter which I am hoping to get on this podcast one day...yep, he is a fan of craft beer!Enjoy the episode!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
This episode was such a fun one to record, because the guy on the mic with me, Dave Myers, is a funny and passionate beer lover...and that makes my role with these easy, and a lot of fun.Dave and I think he might be the first Sales Rep to be asked onto an Aussie Beer Podcast, but were not 100% sure. Either way, this is one for all the girls and guys out there in the market building relationships and sharing great stories about great beers. Dave has some great stories to tell in this episode, as well as a unique view on the differences he found working for both big and small beer companies.Dave is also turning 40 soon, and he takes the opportunity to pitch the idea to his employers (Dave works for Balter) to brew him his very own celebratory beer. If you support him in this endeavour, please use the hashtag #40thBrewForDave in sharing this post!Enjoy this podcast, I sure did!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
There is now a real and vibrant craft beer culture in Tasmania, which is a pleasant surprise for a state that has traditionally been dominated by two mainstream breweries. There are now over 30 breweries in the state, and they are taking full advantage of having Australia's largest hop fields in their backyard. Supporting those breweries are new venues popping up all over the place, looking to treat their customers to flavoursome beers. It's a great time to be involved in the craft beer industry in Tasmania. On October 20th, Hobart Brewing Company will be hosting the Hoptober Festival, where they will join with fellow brewers, Shambles and The Winston to celebrate the glorious hop.I was excited for the Head Brewers from Hobart Brewing and Shambles, Scott Overdorf and Cornel Ianculovici, to join me for a beer this week. Among other things, we chatted about their new collaboration beer made with 8 hop varieties, and what song was on both of their playlists the day Trump was sworn in. Weird, I know, but this podcast asks the questions that must be answered!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
I was so excited to hear that Scott Taylor from Deep Creek Brewing in Auckland, New Zealand, was keen to jump on the podcast with me. I am a massive fan of their beers and couldn’t wait to find out more about what they have been up to.Ex Home Brewers that went pro and still love to experiment, operating in one of the hottest craft beer markets going around, sounds a little bit like beer porn to me!In this episode we talk about the friendly rivalries between craft beer regions in New Zealand, and the comradery that helps them take on the big brewers. Scott tells the story of how they discovered exactly how potent lupulin oils were and I share my story of me meeting with a famous New Zealand sporting hero.Apologies for the audio quality on this one, the interwebs link between Tasmania and New Zealand must have been clogged with funny cat video traffic on the day we spoke.Enjoy the chat!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Paul Mercurio is best know to Australia audiences as the fresh faced dancer on the uber-successful movie, Strictly Ballroom. That just scratches the surface of this trailblazers career on on stage, in television, film, the kitchen and the brewhouse. Paul has always followed his passion with great gusto and, as I found out, he has some great stories to tell.In this episode we talk about the Peach Ale he released in 2004, making an Aphrodisiac Ale with Bentspoke, his desire to one day produce a craft beer tv show, and his love of cooking with beer, which has lead to his Beerlicious Condiments and Rubs company. So many great stories, such a great bloke…enjoy.http://www.beerlicious.com.auhttps://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Tom Delmont is one of the great characters of the craft beer industry. The passionate and always smiling fella with the blonde mop of hair has seen a lot since he signed on to be Mountain Goat's first sales rep. But that was over 10 years ago, and much has changed since then. Tom now finds himself at the helm of Fixation Brewing, a brewery that concentrates on brewing his favourite style of beer...IPA.In this interview we talk about why he chose Collingwood to set up his new Incubator Bar and Brewery, how he once had his own 3D craft beer action figure, and if he has anything plans to brew a stout!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Stirling Howland is a co-founder, and the brand director for one of the hottest craft beer brands on the market, Balter Brewing. It has been a whirlwind introduction to the beer market for Balter, and a very successful one. Stirling is no stranger to working with successful brands, having been the head of marketing at surf brand Billabong for almost two decades. So after a meteoric rise to craft beer fame in 2016, how are things going for Balter now.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

When I wanted to start this Podcast, I knew I needed someone that I knew and trusted, who would be patient with me as I created Episode 1. But probably than that, I wanted someone who had a really interesting story to tell, that I thought others would want to listen to.Enter Will Tatchell, my mate and a great Brewer, who learned his trade in the UK before returning to Tasmania to brew his own beers. About six years in, he decided that he wanted to take his brewery in a different direction, and set out to make it happen. This is his story...https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
