Inspired by the wonderful Aoife O'Brien and her solo episodes on her podcast "Happier at Work" I have created this solo episode!
In this special episode I talk about about flexible work and in particular why we still have a very long way to go regarding part-time work as well as remote & part-time work in North America and beyond.
In the episode I also invite you, my listeners to contemplate some of your views about part-time work.
I referred to several articles in the podcast:

While I may not have focused particularly about the importance of part-time work for everyone in this solo episode, I am a big believer that we can only get to more flexible work if we have especially male role models taking on care work and working flexibly. This summary episode talks about my 20+ episodes with dads and dad advocates.

I am delighted to introduce my guest Helen Hirsh Spence today.
After devoting 35 years to increasingly senior leadership positions in both the public and private education sectors, Helen embarked on a journey of social entrepreneurship. As a result, she founded Top Sixty Over Sixty which was created to celebrate, educate and amplify the positive impact of older Canadians by debunking common myths about ageing and being “old”.
Top Sixty Over Sixty provides thought leadership, consulting and training on age inclusion and diversity. Helen publishes articles, speaks at conferences, and organizes events to promote a reframed narrative of ageing.

This week I am very appreciative to have as my guest Carlotta Dal Pozzo. Carlotta is an Italian woman based in Berlin, with a passion for everything related to occupational psychology and companies' culture. Taking her first steps into innovative ways of working, she's an advocate of a reduced working week.
As more and more companies are struggling with the great resignation, I feel it is particularly important to learn from different generations about their expectations regarding the future of work.
In this episode I speak with Carlotta about her recently finished bachelor thesis in psychological science about debunking the myth of the 9-to-5 working hours. I found it very interesting to have with Carlotta another guest who has written a university thesis about various aspects of flexible work. To me it follows the trend of many surveys that offering various modes of flexible work is increasingly expected as a given to attract and retain talent.
Carlotta told me about her research regarding various European case studies and theoretical models. She also shared her personal observations regarding work in Germany and Italy.

Prof. Dr. Eleonore Soei-Winkels teaches industrial and occupational psychology at FOM in Germany. She has won lecturing awards in 2017 & 2020 and was nominated as a “Professor of the year” in the unicum competition 3 times since 2016. She is the founder and CEO of postdoctransformation.com, helping PhD students to decide whether to become a sustainably visible professor or to transition their career into business with her self-paced e-courses.
Elli has a diploma in psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience. She is also a certified systemic management coach and has worked in IT consulting and strategy with Accenture.
Her passion is to develop people and to make them realize what they are able to accomplish. She uses her diverse background to teach students, leaders and professors through multi-didactic methods.
Today we talked about why it is so important to Elli to teach her students (many of whom may become HR professionals in the future) life skills and make them realize the importance of flexible work like job sharing and better understand what it takes to be a working parent.
We talked about upskilling, how a non-linear career will create learnings that will become helpful in the future and in general what it really takes to ensure that professionals have a work life balance given the current pandemic.
It was a fascinating conversation with Elli who is very knowledgable about so many topics and shared great insights from her work across IT, neuroscience, psychology and now as a professor.

My guest is a great example of how a non-linear career as well as experiences like being a contestant on Fear Factor led to transferable business skills and innovation.
I can highly recommend David Epstein’s book “Range” that talks more about that very topic. And he also includes in his book the example of Frances Hesselbein, a leadership visionary who started her professional career in her mid-fifties, becoming CEO of Girl Scouts USA by drawing on her many decades of volunteer and unpaid care work earlier.
But now without further ado, let me introduce my guest to you.
Eddie Lin started his career in New York at UBS Investment Bank and Goldman Sachs. After moving to California, he transitioned into marketing at Adobe and then Strategy and Business Development at Live Nation/Ticketmaster.
Upon graduation from business school Eddie decided to become a contestant on the reality-TV show Fear Factor where he ate 20 live bees on the season finale. After realizing that traditional education did not actually prepare him for his jobs, he founded NexusEdge to democratize access to economic opportunity by bringing employer-specific training and hiring into the classroom.
NexusEdge is an alumni of the Techstars Kansas City accelerator and has since partnered with Google, Citi Ventures, LinkedIn, Canvas, and Shopify on career pathways with a focus on community colleges.
Eddie holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the University of Southern California where he served as Student Body President.

What we talked about:

I am really honored to welcome Elly Oldenbourg as my guest! Today’s podcast episode will be about what flexible working models have to do with the future of work.
Elly is a future of work expert, sidepreneur and manager @ Google.
She is a proud Gen Y with an extensive multicultural background, a mother and has been working in marketing & sales for 16+ years in various global corporations.
For the past 9+ years Elly has been a manager at Google, most recently in the EMEA diversity, equity & inclusion department. She has been working part-time in the past 4+ years mainly as a job sharer. As a sidepreneur she is the founder and host of thought-provoking salons, a coach, writer, and speaker.
I really appreciate this quote from Elly’s website www.ellyoldenbourg.com :
“With this „non-linear“ life of mine, I’ve been increasingly invited to talk about on the „Future of Work“ publicly, in which I have been encouraging people to explore new work paradigms, to challenge our structural status quo and to demystify “New Work” beyond the tools and the buzzwords.
I believe we, especially us corporate peeps, need to raise braver demands – not only towards ourselves, but also towards our employers and politicians – regarding the way we work, we economize, we incentivize. To finally address the structural changes required for a more just, a more sustainable and a digitally future-proof tomorrow for everyone.”

Michelle Bäßler thought she would be one of those jetset Expat consultants, travelling the world with her family, doing important business. Her International Management studies and her view on the organisation as a whole gave her a good start into that career path.
But she has always placed major importance on the people she has been optimizing and digitalising processes for.
A few months into motherhood, she found returning into her previous position as head of organisational development, much harder than expected. Since then Michelle has grown into the social entrepreneurship world as founder of COSI, with the mission to redefine work-family-balance for parents.
Wanting to open a coworking with childcare space in Stuttgart, Germany she has been uncovering the structual, economic and social barriers especially mothers face when trying to juggle kids and career.
Now she is acting as an ambassador, founding an NGO the Coworking Childcare Connection Germany. Together with other space founders and operators, she works to shed a light on these social challenges, to gather innovative approaches and to highlight the positive impacts these proof of concepts already have on society.

I am very appreciative to welcome two guests today! Luisa Hanke and Robert Frischbier.
For you as a long-time listener, you may remember episode 28 when I was first talking with Robert. I invited him back today as Luisa and he are collaborating, and I wanted to learn more about it.
Luisa founded the Vereinbarkeits Lab (translated to meaning work-life integration lab) in 2018. It is a network for business leaders, founders, HR professionals, and people interested in work-life balance. Luisa also works as a systematic coach supporting professionals focused on creating a family-friendly career.
Robert worked in the automotive industry for about 12 years after receiving his diploma in business administration.
While being responsible for the quality management and inside sales Robert learned how difficult it was for a young parent to balance work and life in a very traditional industry. That´s why he left the industry and focused on supporting all kinds of companies to become employee-friendly. Together with his wife Robert founded 2PAARSchultern which means two pairs of shoulders and describes their own lifestyle best.
Besides his work as a consultant and trainer, Robert works as an auditor for the renowned Bertelsmann Foundation certifying companies as family-friendly employers.
Together Luisa and Robert have created the Vereinbarkeits Academy where they offer a work-life balance facilitator training for professionals to teach them how to make their respective organizations more family-friendly.
The first part of my conversation will be with Luisa. Then Robert joins us for the second part. If you have not heard his previous episode on the show, here it is https://emilyspath.ca/job-sharing-and-beyond-robert-frischbier/

Freelance journalist Heather Bolen’s Medium article "How a Simple Platform Fix Can Help Millions of Women Trying To Re-Enter the Workforce: LinkedIn must remedy its implicit bias against women" was published on International Women’s Day 2021.
It went viral and caught LinkedIn’s executives' attention when Fortune magazine reached out to them for a response as they were writing an article about it and it sparked the introduction of LinkedIn’s new job titles.
In today's episode, you will hear more from Heather's article, what transferable skills she gained during her time as a stay-at-home mom and ex-pat, and thoughts on how to normalize unpaid care workers in the future.

Marketing strategist, full-time community activist, and volunteer Lori Sugarman-Li wrote a thought-provoking LinkedIn article "I don't get paid. So what am I worth?" which really resonated with the LinkedIn community and led to many heartfelt comments as well as private messages.
I asked Lori about the reasons for writing her article, what transferable skills she has learned from her unpaid care work time and being an ex-pat, and how LinkedIn could become a more inclusive platform for unpaid professionals.

Last but certainly not least, I asked for some feedback from Victoria Ipri, a seasoned executive and middle management resume and job search coach and LinkedIn marketing expert.
Victoria created a LinkedIn post with a poll asking for feedback on the new LinkedIn job titles. It gathered more than 130k views and created a very lively discussion. I asked her about some feedback from the comments and what surprised her the most.
I also mentioned that a Vanderbilt University research study resulted in suggesting that professionals should be more open about their employment "breaks" and ask Victoria for her feedback about it.

I am delighted to introduce Sher-li Torrey today! Her own experience about becoming a mother inspired her to start up Mums@Work in Singapore in 2010 and Career Navigators in 2016.
In our conversation, Sher-li talked about her decade-long focus on creating flexible work opportunities and back-to-work initiatives for returning professionals with companies who are focused on work-life integration.
She also shared examples of events for her 40,000 member strong community of moms from workshops, career fairs, her portal, and more.
It was very interesting to learn how covid19 has influenced unpaid care work and dads’ involvement in Singapore.
Sher-li and I also spoke about job sharing and why it has not really taken off in Singapore. I appreciated her honest feedback which will help you, our listener when setting up job sharing in your own organization or becoming a job sharer.
Other topics included transferable skills from unpaid care work as well as how younger generations will influence the job market going forward.

@thejobsharepair are two working mums, Hannah Hall-Turner and Rachel Maguire, on a mission to raise the profile of job sharing in the world of work and make it an accessible option for anyone!
They began their own job sharing partnership upon their return to work, in the role of HR Director for a globally reaching professional services firm, following their first maternity leaves (their first babies having been born 6 days apart). At that point, they were the only job sharers in the UK arm of that business. After making a success of their own job share and realising both how underutilised job sharing is within the UK labour market and what a missed opportunity this represented for so many businesses, they initially set up their Instagram account to network with other job sharers, share best practice and highlight great job sharing case studies. This was the first step towards launching what is now their innovative and successful coaching and consulting business, The Job Share Pair Ltd.
Fuelled by their passion to normalise job sharing as a way of working, and utilising their 25 years combined experience in HR (with over half of these in Board level leadership positions), they focus on helping others reach their full potential at work without compromising family life or free time. They demystify the methodology of job sharing to organisations, providing them with all the tools needed to make it work, as well as providing bespoke coaching services for job share partners, their managers and their teams, to maximise the effectiveness of their unique partnership and provide the best opportunity for seamless working success.
They are huge advocates of flexible working, with a particular focus on job sharing, and the impact that a positive work life balance/blend can have on individuals, organisations, and communities.

For Michael Ray, becoming a Dad at the tender age of 49 was a shock in itself, and two years after that– an even bigger shock - that he found himself as the sole parent to his beautiful baby girl - Charlie.
Michael speaks about his insights from his personal journey raising his daughter and the profound impact being a solo dad has had on his outlook.
He addresses the gender and societal roles that are no longer applicable and the negative impact on organisational, business and personal outcomes. Michael speaks straight from the heart and his ability to connect, resonate and inspire people is obvious.
He has had numerous TV and radio appearances and has been featured on a number of both local and international publications and podcasts.

Melanie Belitza is the Head of Technical Documentation and Training at an international systems mobility company where she has had a successful career since graduating with a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering 9 years ago.
Starting this year, she has been leading her team on a part-time basis (4 days a week) and on the fifth day she is following her passion for life-long learning through exploration of concepts about the future of work and networking. She has been documenting her experiences of this innovative work concept in her German language blog.
Her own practical experience and research of the many different perspectives of working part-time has led her to creating a “Blog Parade about part time work”, a German language social media initiative where nearly 20 professionals shared their own experience and reasons for alternative and flexible work models.
To increase the visibility and awareness of this important aspect of the future of work, Melanie is starting a weekly mini-interview series with the blog parade authors to learn more details about their decision-making process and diverse work models.
In this podcast episode, Melanie discusses more details about her life and work model, how she prepared her team for her working part time and her experiences during this journey. She also talks about the blog parade and the content of the articles, where for example the balance of work and family was mentioned. Additionally, she gives recommendations on how to start the discussion about part-time work with an employer and explains why it has many advantages for organizations to offer part-time and other flexible work models.

Tiina Bruno is a Swedish mother of three, Change maker, economist, management consultant, author and international lecturer with over 20 years of work experience and founder of the Parentsmart Employers concept.
She is often referred to as a “norm breaker” for her way of daring to explore what companies and organizations actually mean with promises around inclusion, sustainable work life and work-life balance. Her pioneer initiatives challenge and develop traditional patterns in working life, promoting more concrete action to increase inclusion and social sustainability for all.
After research and launch of the Parentsmart Employers hand book in 2010 her perspective on the topic of working parents has received a lot of attention both in Sweden and abroad, mainly for using parenthood as a universal inclusion example relevant in all countries, with impact and benefits for all, not only parents.
Tiina has been invited to international conferences and arranges study visits to Swedish companies in cooperation with UN agencies and Embassies, as an expert in the area and with a strong belief in international exchange of experience.
The Parentsmart train-the-trainer model for global companies promotes the spread of best practice for all countries to develop faster and learn from each other. It shows employers potential impact to reach several Agenda 2030 goals.

Ian Dinwiddy is the founder of Inspiring Dads, a coaching and mentoring business, specialising in working with men who want to be great dads and have great careers.
Ian believes strongly that supporting Dads with their work and life balance, normalising flexible working and parental leave has powerful benefits for improving well-being and retention, building diverse and inclusive workplaces and closing the gender pay gap.
Talking to Ian was like having a conversation with a kindred spirit. We covered a lot of topics from why he started his organization, that dads can do any type of caring except breastfeeding to why a time of solo parenting is important for dads. Ian also spoke about the identity of being a full time carer dad and how male role models are important for other dads – using Bill Gates’ as an awesome example. Ian explained how he educates people about being a dad carer one person at a time, the importance of flexible work and his talk at Flexpo on September 16th. Last but certainly not least he gave examples of soft skills he has learned as a carer and talked about the importance of shared family goals.

Prof. Dr. Eleonore Soei-Winkels teaches industrial and occupational psychology at FOM in Germany. She has won lecturing awards in 2017 & 2020 and was nominated as a “Professor of the year" in the unicum competition 3 times since 2016.
In our conversation we touched on many of the four main aspects of the Job Sharing and Beyond podcast conversations to create a more diverse workforce and thus lead to gender equality faster. – Flexible working, fathers & care, returning professionals and transferable business skills from unpaid care.
For example, Elli talks about how job-sharing can happen in unusual ways. She also shares using another flexible working method, asynchronous working.
More and more business leaders are interested in reducing secret parenting. Equally sharing unpaid care work will help create more role models for their employees. Elli’s method of sharing and talking about her life work balance with her students follows the same line and it also teaches them great life skills. Additionally, Elli’s diverse academic and professional background enables her to provide the students with scientific and psychological information about being a parent.
Elli also spoke about the benefits for organizations about hiring a Quereinsteiger, someone with a non-linear background. Many returners often fall into this general category, so that was very insightful to hear.
