FULL SHOW DETAILS:

You want to fully experience and savor your one & precious life... but you're a little stuck?

YOUR PERSONAL STORIES ARE THE ANTIDOTE.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

STORY WORK is something we gift ourselves and we can model for our children now, so they don't believe the same LIE many of us did growing up:

⇢ get good grades = get into a good college = get a good job = happy life.

In reality, that's a recipe for a cookie cutter, safe and settled life—one you believe must be your best life (you did everything "right" after all)... Meanwhile, you're baffled over why you don't feel as appreciative and happy as you "should." It's because of conditioning: cultural, societal, and generational.

⚡️

Use your personal stories to unlearn conditioned beliefs and heighten the meaningfulness + aliveness in your day-to-day.

That's when you'll:

🔥 be mind-blown by your own life!

🔥 wake up with less, "what do I HAVE to do today?" and more "what do I GET to do today?"

🔥 experience meaningfulness and aliveness as your natural state of mind—much like untethered childhood.

Isn't that what we want for our children, our loved ones, and for ourselves?

🎧

DANGEROUSLY GOOD STORIES, HOSTED BY MARIE MASSE, WILL GUIDE YOU DEEPER INTO YOUR STORIES.

In these episodes, Marie unearths tiny, personal stories from guests, listeners, and her own life a couple times a month.

She dials into hidden opportunities within each story, so you can tap into your own stories for healing, self-trust, connection, meaningfulness, and even profit.

🌱 🦹🏼 ✨ 💌 💰

Whether you're:

  • a person with family (you're a parent / grandparent / friend / sibling / or someone's child)

  • a writer / photographer / creative / memory-keeper / family historian

  • a teacher / coach / therapist

  • a member of Congress

  • or a service professional / CEO / business owner

you have overlooked stories (and therefore: unclaimed opportunities)—GUARANTEED.

Listen in.

You'll start seeing more of your stories everywhere... and never see them in the same way again. Promise.

🎙

ABOUT THE HOST:

Marie's been self-experimenting and teaching this story work since 2013.

Her own stories led her family to their "Masse Mountain" forest oasis—which is much more than a simple place.

She's also an author, photographer, actively unschooling her kids, and navigating ADHD for herself & her son.

Under 24 hours after publishing the last episode, one listener (and episode 79 guest + friend of mine), Caryn DeFreez sent me an audio message.

She reached out to ME, so she spoke just like any other time talking with a friend: unguarded & being her unfiltered self.

And guess what?

THAT is this episode—with her permission, obviously.

She said she needed the episode... well, I needed her response. I think you'll feel this one too.

If you ever had that moment when you realized you can document not only the real life, random moments that tie us all together, but the most high value, unique to you, most meaningful bits of your life (and your clients’ lives) and THAT created a fire within… you’ll love this episode.

Courtney Holmes is a photographer, filmmaker and Founder of the Filming Life Academy. She’s taught her own class, Filming Families: The Modern Family Video, on CreativeLive and speaks frequently among many conferences and events in the photography community. Being the week of Halloween, I thought it could be fun for us to face our fears together… and that starts with acknowledging our fears. It’s so easy to go with the flow of the noise in our lives and not pause to look up.

More specifically, projects that emulate something you might see in the news, but photographed + told by “one of us”family photographers who don’t have connections in the photojournalism world.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How going from Katie’s perception of Craftsman to Artist was what sparked Katie’s love for documentary projects
  • Katie’s process for project ideas – what to do when you have one
  • The big problem after you execute a really, great documentary project that Confluence Magazine is working to solve
  • Pivot into a big of a side topic: starting a bigger business project like Confluence or F&F
  • The September issue’s Featured Project by Felicia Chang that’s images were curated by photojournalist Ryan Christopher Jones
  • Sequencing like a photojournalist – specifically sequencing your photos for narrative
  • All about Confluence – submitting, how it’s a space for photo editors, photojournalists, and new voices

Ashley Manley and I kind of go way back – we crossed paths right around the time I opened Fearless and Framed. We had similar journeys getting started in our client businesses and both had a spark to document life for clients.

She’s written for us at F&F a few times – my favorite is an older piece, called Document the People Around Us, Not Just the Kids. It’s about honoring the OTHER relationships in your life, like friendships, for example. I don’t know about you, but it feels like this epidemic of only photographing + sharing our kid work, when we have other important people in our lives too!

In this convo, we cover:

  • Signals that prompted change in Ashley’s photography journey
  • Ashley’s decision to pause her client business
  • What cultivating a relationship between Ashley + her photography looks like
  • Jumping into shooting + developing film
  • Making pictures + having pictures: what Ashley gets out of both

If you’re 100% OVER THE MOON, ELATED with photography and are happy as a clam working towards big goals in your work and / or business, this episode is NOT for you and doesn’t apply.

If you’re loving it, but it feels a little different than it used to, it’s gut check time.

Highlights of this ep:

  • A little history + a couple mistakes I made and have heard similar stories from photog buddies that sparked a feeling of RESENTMENT towards our cameras and this GIFT we have.
  • Then, what’s been my anchor, my home base – what’s kept me grounded, true to myself – and helped me maintain that documentary state of mind (the love affair in shooting)
  • Finally, I'll wrap with some GUT CHECK questions

A Facebook post by Erin's Hensley sparked this episode (screenshot below). I brought Erin on to go deeper into her message. We don't all experience the same things and I recognize that. Still, if you've really wanted to be featured or published, and it's been a part of your flow: you shoot, get your stuff on your computer to polish, and go: "ok where can I submit this?" It's part of your process.

You may not have ever recognized this: if you've felt influenced when you open up your laptop or cell phone when you see work of other photographers - a blend of conscious and sub-consciously you think things like:

I should try to shoot more like that / more in that light / in that location

I love how CLOSE these images are or how that photographer really pulled back

So then, you go out and try to shoot more like that rather than from your true self, then this episode is for you.

In this IDP ep, we cover:

  • what sparked Erin's FB post
  • my story in running "The Photo Factory"
  • Criticism, comparison, and influence
  • The power of DOING vs. seeking information
  • Being on the OTHER side of the limelight
  • and more!

Enjoy the story.

I had a wonderful conversation with Davina Fear in this one! She’s a documentary family photographer who sometimes travels for clients, she’s located here in South Carolina with me, has been in business for over 15 years, and also mentors photographers. She’s got a lot of wisdom for us!

In this ep, we covered:

  • What Davina thinks photography + entrepreneurship are really about (I LOVE her response so much that I turned it into a quote to share)
  • Her recent orphanage trip with her family – how she balanced serving + photographing, not having money to pay for this trip + embarrassment + making it happen, and overall SO MUCH goodness around doing a trip where you’re there to SERVE
  • [30:30] Davina’s DAILY emails that I’m paying attention to – they started April 12, 2018 with email subject line: I quit social media (so we talk a little about ending social media + the impact of personal connection)
  • [37:30] Another dimension of those emails – showing up mask-free: totally fearless and owning DAVINA (owning who she is to the world)
  • Hot email: “What Have I Done?” CLIFFHANGER
  • Her faith – a major part of her life that tends to take people back a little when she shares it. She’s kept that part of her life quiet + under wraps – even with close friends. She’s been hesitant + scared to express herself in the past and shares with us how she’s truly started to let that go + allow her truth to power herself + guide her actions
  • and the RESULTS of those emails – that interaction with people from these DAILY emails she’s been writing now for 30+ days

When I landed on Angela's feed, it wasn't what my typical experience in landing on another photographer's feed. Most of the time, it seems like most of the shares are a big spotlight of their children. I'm guilty of it too! Not that there's any real guilt - there's nothing bad around that - but what I noticed about Angela's, I felt a different experience vibe. I wasn't only getting a piece of her life (her child), I was getting more of the big picture.

We are all MORE than a parent. Maybe you're not a parent and maybe there's a trend with ONE thing you're sharing. That's the overall thing here. If we're all focused on only 1-2 things that we're sharing, how can we give a little more of the bigger picture?

In this episode, we talk about:

  • how Angela intuitively documents her life and how she's decided NOT to pursue the documentary family photography approach in her business (at least, right NOW)
  • how online interaction affected Angela's photography
  • documenting her life beyond her child and motherhood
  • how Angela's managing her family memories
  • what working with models taught Angela
  • and, lastly, about teaching kids the importance of pictures

Enjoy the story.

Kirsten Lewis needs no introduction, but I'm giving her one anyway :) She's been shooting almost 20 years, traveling the world documenting families – often with her own family in tow.

She’s doing what a lot of us look to as “the dream life”of a photographer in business. So, I wanted to dig into that to learn more of the pieces we may not see, the reality of what she’s put into her career, and what she wants out of photography – which may be similar to you or far from what you want.

In this ep, we cover:

  • The complications + benefits of the nearly full-time travel life as a working photographer
  • What Kirsten’s goals were like in the early days for this genre
  • Signs + signals that hurt a photographer’s growth (later she shares ONE trait that her BEST students share)
  • Being a “good photographer” – what she believes that means
  • Why it’s important for Kirsten to KEEP growing when she’s already recognized and would leave a legacy behind already
  • Dimensions of growth + results from shooting – for her, for clients, for her book
  • Differences in her + husband, Greg, in what they want to do with photography
  • Documentary Family Awards – advice on submitting
  • (sprinkled throughout) How being an ARTIST is ingrained in her and how that’s played into her photography + business

Allison Redmon booked herself solid using fun, easy workshops in a small town in Saudi Arabia! Pretty cool, right?

I learned real quick that Allison is also wicked talented in doing family films. She's working as the Academy Manager for the Filming Life Academy, an online filmmaking school founded by Courtney Holmes that opened Spring of 2018 too. She's also put her formal Bachelors and Masters in Music Education to great use by hosting the Discover the Power of Music & Audio for Family Films Masterclass at the Filming Life Academy.

In this convo, we cover:

  • Allison's shooting workflow + business process. I was curious how long she needs to shoot for a film that ends up being 3-4 minutes long and how she manages both filming AND shooting stills with her clients - Allison gives us a great look at it all
  • The power of music: how it can be a beautiful tool to strengthen the experience your clients have with their film, Allison's Masterclass, and where Allison buys her music
  • All the workshop goodness: Why PPW + why teaching was a no-brainer for Allison.
  • Allison's story on becoming booked out - that's right, booked solid - using workshops
  • The power of workshops evolving from your inner circle to an outer network of warm strangers
  • What Allison's been doing to keep her workshop students engaged AFTER the workshop
  • A SMART strategy in your promo photos for your workshops

Kyla Roma is a marketing + profitability strategist. She's a wealth of wisdom, but what I love about her most is that she keeps it all simple, yet IMPACTFUL.

Kyla knows how to get results, yet she's also down to earth. She never makes you feel like she's light years ahead of you in business (and she knows it). You know what I mean?

She always makes me feel like a confident, competent business owner. So, I brought her on to tell you all about "launching."

If you're rocking your own kitchen sink of marketing tasks on top of everything else that your'e doing - you're probably NOT launching. And, you should be.Or, at least - consider learning how to launch.

In this IDP ep, we cover:

  • Why "Launching" is a really smart way for you to spend your marketing time on your business
  • Reframing what the outcome goal should look like for your first, second, and beyond launch
  • Kyla provides us with an impromptu "launch menu" (because launching isn't one-size-fits-all)
  • What to do in-between selling launches to build an audience to launch to (because it's no fun launching when no one's listening)
  • Finally, we wrap with Kyla's Iconic Photo + how she's managing her family memories.

  • details on Stacey's Breaking the Glass Ceiling class including ONE lesson she finds she's frequently teaching (it may be a good one for you)

Brittni is a fellow photographer who lost her teenage son in 2017.

I couldn’t help, but wonder how she’s feeling around the pictures + documentations she has of his life and memories with him from her unique perspective as a photographer just like you and I.

She was happy to share her story with us!

Text 019TREAT to the number 44222 to grab the Mini Mag or visit http://www.fearlessandframed.com/019 for the Full Show Notes + Mini Mag

In this episode:

  • We start with Brittni introducing herself as a photographer, then telling us about a shift in motherhood that started about 2 years prior to losing Gage
  • She shares a piece of marriage advice she received early on that they followed for 14 years that’s made her grateful
  • Then, she gives us a look at the Compassion Club and the Gage Schroeder Foundation. She learned, to heal, you must serve others. What I especially love is that through her family’s service, they’ve also uniquely preserved Gage’s spirit in a different way than pictures, videos, etc: by starting a non-profit.

Then, we get into all the photography and memory recording stuff:

  • How her pictures serve her vivid mental images of Gage
  • What she wished she had pictures of
  • What kind of documentations (pictures, videos, etc.) she leans to the most – which was a surprising response to me
  • I give her a glimpse into my program, The Preservation Project, and ask her advice in what we could be missing. Brittni delivers with such a beautiful why-didn’t-I-think-of-that?piece of wisdom that also had me and pre-published ep listeners thinking “hmm, I really need to get more intentional here.”
  • Then, we talk about the tough pictures made by her friend, Jean Smith, of Gage & his family in the hospital, of his funeral, his family visiting him at the cemetery.
  • Lastly, I asked her, what would be her last picture if she could get the image of him in her mind into a photograph.

Deep breath. Enjoy the story.

I thought it would be fun to do a short + sweet episode on one little wisdom nugget that's recently been helpful to me - that you're gonna love- and go through some old "war stories" of mine.

A few weeks ago, I had someone call my stuff "fluff." My work. This is my heart + soul that I'm putting into the world and I was told it was fluff. Ironically enough, the person who said this has never been a student of mine. So, there's that.

In the same week, I received the SWEETEST email, which also made its way to the Intentional Documentary podcast page in iTunes (so you can read the whole thing there).

Thank you again, Thor! Your words touched my heart.

Here's one sentence:

"You're doing great things. I'm grateful for your spirited persistence in helping provide tools for storytelling and how others are seeing themselves and the world around them. Keep up the good work."

So, total opposite end of the spectrum, right?

What I've been doing is collecting my testimonials, which I've always done and I'm sure you have too (all the screenshots, saved emails, etc.).

What I've neglected to do is actually PUT the kind words somewhere that's easily accessible and I can go there on a moment's notice. I launched The Preservation Project again in May 2018 and my launch was less than perfect (that story shared in episode 011). There's an extended part of the program that was in creation mode then, my self-doubt kicked into overdrive, and I looked at this collection of kind words.

Not just testimonials for my products, but also kind words about the F&F site, my teaching, and video testimonials too.

Having all of that in ONE place helped me get out of my mindset funk.

So, in this ep, I share:

  • More about this one-stop-shop I've created for my incoming kind words (so you can do it too)
  • Some of my "war stories" to show that you're not alone in online criticism for expressing your heart

Enjoy the {short} story.

PRICING. Need I say more? This is the biggest pain point I see in our community. There’s so many questions from “how do I choose my model and price points?”to the mindset blocks, like, “I wouldn’t pay for this!”

Ashleigh Raddatz, Co-Founder of Documentary Family Photography Worldwide, and I crossed paths earlier this year.

In this ep, we cover:

  • Her journey as a photographer
  • DFP’s missions of changing the perspective on what family is + show photographers that success IS possible (coming from 2 photographers in Europe – they believed if we can do this, everyone can)
  • Pricing beyond the typical equation of: time, $ for expenses + taxes, & how you want to show up – what do people miss in this simple math?
  • Pricing at the beginning of your business – “when do I price for profit?”
  • Selling products – what to sell
  • How to decide between collection, inclusive, or a la carte + IPS or online gallery – blew my mind!
  • How to do better in the online gallery model
  • Upselling advice
  • Being competitive without undercutting your value (she’s so much less)
  • Testing your market
  • Sprinkling of mindset + language shifts throughout

Enjoy the money story.

We're talking all about getting your phone photos OFF of your phone! I'll share how I keep my phone Photos app (iPhone girl over here)at ZERO, which feels pretty magical in a day where we're documenting e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g all the time.

  • his journey and what he got out of formal education – I’ve always wondered what I’ve missed out on, since I don’t have that background
  • Seshu's voice + how his pictures weave a relative mix of being loved, being important, and being present
  • his parents – both through pictures and also their influence on this work with a beautifiul 2-part lesson they gave him, that stuck with him – that we can all learn from and finally

We’re focused on business today, but if you’re not in business, still listen in.

In this ep, we talk about:

  • Going from scared to spend on an expensive camera to starting a business – LOVE her reason behind starting that’s different than what I hear often
  • Her first steps in getting her first clients
  • Genius marketing moves through Instagram and in her new community – yes – she actually MOVED while in the beginning stages of her business and worked with that instead of letting that be a setback or excuse
  • How working with a local business once – at a discount – has brought in a wave of clients
  • What prints on your walls does for your kiddos
  • Ins + outs of a promo that filled up her winter season, changed her business model after its success, and used the revenue to invest in sample products for IPS (which she’s crushing, by the way)
  • How she’s built an open, trusting, helpful, genuine relationship with her social media following
  • Wrap up with her two different Iconic photos that share a similar purpose as a reminder she needs frequently (me too! #kindredhearts I tell ya)

This episode is for everyone - whether you're in business or not, whether you're a photographer or not- because it's all about energy.

Specifically, what lights you up - your play- and how you can experience more of that with my mentor & Mindset Coach, Susan Ferraro.

In this conversation:

  • Suze tells us how she helps women in her own words: by helping them become what they've always been
  • Signs + signals that you're out of alignment (and what alignment even means)
  • What being "in flow" means, living through inspired action (she calls it the play state)
  • Suze gives us advice on a common battle we face as we WANT to start to BE it (our true self), but there's a problem (like: "but I need to do this other thing to make money first")
  • How Suze stopped procrastinating and let go of her should-dos + have-tos
  • Synchronicities between the work I've done with Suze and how we SEE behind the lens as photographers
  • How Suze stays consistent. She always has something to say it seems on social media, while I'm over here like, "what now?" showing up on my own platforms

Do you ever feel like your business is at a complete stand still if you're not working - behind the laptop, the lens - whatever that looks like for you? I've been there.

I listened to this podcast a long time ago, I don't remember which one, but they had Mariah Coz, Founder of Femtreprenuer. She said something profound (to me): she wanted to Mariah-proof her business. Meaning, she wanted to create a business that operated without her. I'd heard of creating systems and knew that when you're the Visionary, you've got people doing the operations for you (a team), but that "Mariah-proof my business"stuck with me.

How can you, [your name]-proof you business?

In this ep, we talk about: * 3 different systems I've focused on: to gain pre-potential clients, team tasks, and selling products / programs * 10 Things That Have Life-Proofed My Biz (so you can pick + choose what you might wanna try) * My own LIFE context around this ep (both life that's been happening + work I've been pouring out)

A surgery prep call with the hospital prompted me to explore the question: How do you cope with stress?

My response was: I look at what's happening and take one step forward.

The woman on the phone meant stressin terms of health + finances. It gave me the idea to share how I protect my BUSINESS when LIFE happens, so that you can keep some of these wisdom nuggets in your back pocket.

I had never heard of Nick. I wasn't shopping for any kind of help, yet I landed on his site + booked him in like a day. Crazy, right?

Nick McArthur is a Sales Coach + Awesomeness Expert. In real talk: he helps people realize how great they are + be brave enough to use the things that make them different as a selling FEATURE, instead of a weakness.

Here's the highlight reel of our chat:

  • I gush over his website copy and ask him HOW he hooked me so fast (and he really delivered on his response!)
  • Selling pictures vs. selling you
  • His marketing style - which appears little to none on the typical IG / FB channels and piqued my interest (he calls it: the Slow Burn)
  • Super generalized gender roles in sales - such a cool perspective from Nick as a Trans Man that had me nodding 'that's so true!' (in my experience as a female) the whole time
  • How Nick + his wife manage their family of 7's memories!
  • Lastly, he shares his Iconic Photo submission with us

...so much goodness!

It’s something she lives + breathes in her work, brand, and family model at home * the Iconic Photo she submitted (and omgosh get the Mini mag below! When I speak to my students, they’re often so obsessed with the questions, “do you feel emotion?” or “do you feel the story?” that they’re trying to make ALL of their pictures be universal... to the point they lose sight of their voice from trying so damn hard.

In ep 005, I get up on my soapbox + talk about falling in love with your pictures the way you did BEFORE knowing anything about photography + skill.

Can you remember those days?

In this episode, I talk to you about a Legacy Box – creating one, filling it up, what it means, & more.

I started using the term Legacy Box in 2017 when I was building, The Preservation Project. I was using the phrase to describe (basically) the end goal - a way to summarize your answers to these questions:

  1. What’s the point of all the things we’re documenting through pictures, writing, or the things we collect along the way – like a handwritten card from your Grandma?
  2. What’s the point of all this stuff? Where’s it going?

In episode 004 of the Intentional Documentary™ podcast, we explore: * The physical, tangible side of making pictures, writing, and all the other ways we might wanna document. * The difference in a Keepsake / Memory Box and a Legacy Box (my thought process) * A conversation with my Grandma that shaped how I organize my own preservation pieces (whether in pictures or another format) * What happens to the pictures when your loved ones pass away * Defining your own Legacy Box - with a couple examples of two cherished pieces of family history that my family has
