This week on the podcast we revisit some of the previous episodes to give everyone a sample of what Marketing For The Culture is all about. We did have a new podcast but unfortunately due to some technical difficulties, we lost an episode. Then our own, Michelle Ngome was giving a great presentation at Content Marketing World and we were unable to give you that great marketing content that you are used to getting every week. We will be back next week to review what happened at Content Marketing World, and what you can expect in the coming weeks.

This week on the podcast CL is riding solo and he is talking about the clarity of your brand voice.
Ask yourself can your customers hear your brand clearly?
What is a brand voice? CL defines brand voice as "culture-filled relatable communications that signal that a brand is right for a consumer without hesitation.”
In this podcast, CL covers four things you can do to get your brand voice pitch-perfect for the people that matter most.

This week we catch up with Walter Gainer II to recap and go inside the LinkedIn Creator Program and discuss the latest news in the Spotify vs. Apple Podcast saga. Walter was one of the 100 selected to participate in LinkedIn's inaugural Creator Accelerator Program. Late last year, the Microsoft-owned platform announced it would be investing $25 Million into creators. The program included a 10-week incubator that helped creators grow and develop on the platform using all of the features it offers.
Walt talks about the growth he has experienced since beginning of the program and the interaction hed with the team at LinkedIn along with the community he became a part of.

We wrap up the show by discussing the latest news from Apple and Spotify's battle in the podcasting industry.
Apple recently announced they are letting its podcast host see its follower count on their analytic dashboards. It's great that Apple is giving one piece of data, but it's still just one piece of data. Apple is looking to encourage users with growing fanbases to create premium content on Apple Podcasts.
According to internal data and Edison research, Spotify says US podcast listeners now use its service more than Apple Podcasts. Walt and CL would both like to look at those numbers. It doesn't feel like that could be accurate, but Spotify is playing the narrative game. Either way, Spotify has been buying up the podcast industry over the last few years, and with many of the exclusive podcasts, they may be winning in the short term to get people started. The fact they have an estimated 406 million active users makes it easy to refer to things like podcasts, interviews, and more from their favorite artists and even Spotify's original podcasts discussing the latest trends in music.

This week on the podcast we are running a rebroadcast of a live event AAMA hosted with Michael Maslansky of maslansky + partners. Michael advises Fortune 500 corporations, industry associations, major litigation practices, and non-profit organizations on what to say, how to say it, and most importantly, why it matters.
How CEOs, companies, and entire industries communicate – whether during crises, in advertising and public relations campaigns, or with investors, Congress, or the American people – often means the difference between success and failure. Clients from Pfizer to Bank of America to Microsoft to Starbucks turn to Michael to understand the public mood, challenge conventional wisdom, and transform not just what they say to key audiences – but how they say it.

This week on the podcast, CL is riding solo. In this episode, he makes a case for scaling your business down to be like Fiverr to serve more customers and form more relationships. Michelle is away on a speaking engagement, and before we get back to the interviews, CL wanted to drop a bit of value in the feed to hold you over.
There are different ways you can scale your business to get in front of people who find your services to be valuable. If you look at Fiverr's business model, it is made to get people in the door to do business with an individual. The price point of $5 is usually a great place to be okay with the investment mentally, but just like car repair, there's always something else you need to be 100% ready to hit the road.
Think of the ways you can scale your business like Fiverr. How can you get people in the door? Is there one problem, one step you can help solve to make value? Finding an entry point to make more connections and spread the genius of what you can do is the goal of this activity. Don't price yourself out of all relationships. They may be more valuable than you think.

This week on the podcast, CL and Michelle discuss the absence of black TikTokers on the Top Earners list, how to build an audience to be sold, and we announce the 2nd Annual Top Black Marketers List.
Become Recognized as a Top Black Marketer (02:25)
We are announcing the 2nd Annual Top Black Marketers List. We want to recognize people in the marketing field that are doing their thing. We want to highlight the people making an impact and creating on the highest level.
No Black TikTokers at The Top (12:36)
In the recent Forbe’s List of Top-Earning TikTok-ers 2022, BET pointed out that there were no black content creators on the list. This made Michelle wonder what is wrong with the cash pipeline feeding into these platforms? Especially when the numbers of followers and views are similar.
If you feel like you or someone you know qualifies to be on this list, please submit so you can have the chance to be recognized.
Top Black Marketers Submissions - https://bit.ly/AAMALIST
Build an Audience So You Can Sell It (32:12)
We wrap the podcast by looking into an emerging trend: Media companies and big brands buying other media and production companies. With the utmost confidence in their business model, audience acquisition is one of the most lucrative investments into growing your customer base. As brands are getting more thoughtful about their advertising budget and customer acquisition cost, more of them are starting to build an audience. Still, the ones with the most cash to burn are buying entire audiences to add to their ecosphere.
The question is can you build an audience for purchase? Do you have a blog, YouTube Channel, podcast, social media presence built around a brand that a more prominent brand could purchase? You might already be doing it. It could be your most valuable asset, and you don’t even know it.
Thanks for listening!
We would love your feedback on the show. Please leave a review and let us know what you think.

Michelle and CL break down the first-ever 2021 Black Podcast Listener Report this week. We look into the numbers and discuss what we learn about black podcast listeners. We had critiques and follow-up questions that podcasters would like to know from the survey results. Overall we discover YouTube is the most significant gateway into podcasts for black people, and it's not close. Here is some background information about the study. Thanks for listening!
Who Is The Data From SXM Media is the advertising arm of the Sirus XM company, which owns Stitcher, a podcasting platform, and Pandora, which recently added podcasting to its app. Mindshare is one the run of the mill multinational marketing corporations that work with some of the more prominent brands. You'll never hear about them, but you have likely been exposed to their work. Edison does many different types of consumer-related industry research.
Who Is The Data For As I read through the data, I had to check my eyes because I couldn't help but look at it through the eyes of a podcaster. The data intends to serve the advertisers key statistics that will sell them on the idea that advertising on black podcasts is a good if not effective move. As a podcaster, I searched for ways that could help me grow my audience. Instead, the data reflects the most obvious points podcasters are aware of and facts that reign true across media platforms.

This week on the podcast Michelle and CL link up in person for the first time to recap Michelle's experience at Dallas Digital Summit, how companies can validate their diversity, and recent headlines in the 'Great Resignation'.
Fresh from her trip to Dallas Digital Summit, Michelle recounts some of the highlights at the conference. As an observer, she noticed there were several opportunities for people may want to present.
In recent months, many corporations have found themselves turning a corner when it comes to diversity. Two of the companies in particular Papa John's and Tommy Hilfiger have made big changes in the way they have presented their image. Papa John's has gone all-in on Shaquille O'Neal as the face of the pizza brand. It's a move to show that not everyone at the company thinks like the founder and former chairman John Schnatter.
In the late '90s, an internet rumor was started about Tommy Hilfiger making racist remarks via email and on an Oprah show caused enough a strain to the relationship the brand had with the black community. As more information was able to be verified by the company, they also are putting in work with their Fashion Frontier Challenge. The recent set of winners are as diverse it could be with causes that are bigger than just being the flyest thing on the rack.
As someone who is known for her knowledge about diversity in the workplace, Michelle shares how corporations can validate the work they are doing to sustain trust with the community. Then she gives a framework that makes can help your company have a healthy and inviting environment for current and prospective employees.
We end by looking at a recent Insider article that highlights the struggles people of color are experiencing having during the great resignation. Everyone is not as fortunate to stand against less than perfect work conditions or mentally draining environments. People still have bills and kids and it's harder for some. We reflect on being fortunate to be planning for times like this and even waiting for the right opportunity. Everyone wants to quit but it's never a good time.
Thanks for listening

This week on the podcast, we continue our list of favorites from 2021. In part two of the favorites list, CL and Michelle discuss. their favorite media in book, TV, podcasting, and more
Content has continued to dominate the conversation this year. We decided to share some of our favorite content that inspired us, helped us learn, and, most importantly, entertained us.
There is value in diversifying the type of content you ingest. The OG of the media game, books, is an effective marketing tool for those who need the branding to establish a voice in the market. Podcasting offers the ability to multitask while listening. Movies and TV shows teach lessons through characters, and they are also great examples of storytelling for marketers.

The internet was built on free speech and thrives on the lack of gatekeepers. Black TikTok content creators can make a living if they can get credit or until they speak up. In the last calendar year, black content creators have learned some hard lessons about how much freedom they have on their platform. Early 2020 produced the Renegade challenge that Jalaiah Harmon started. Jalaiah is one of the most notable examples of a black creator who had to get credit on the backend. Not everyone is so fortunate, but the community stood up for her and has since elevated her to the place she deserves.
Can Black TikTok Creators Be Pro-Black? In a recent article from Essence, Black TikTok creators Conscious Lee and Ziggi describe their experiences and why they are moving to other platforms like FanBase. Why the move? The creators have been experiencing "shadowbans," a practice where the algorithm implicitly hides your post and drops the engagement rate. They claim TikTok, in this case, is tanking their visibility when they speak up on causes that personally affect them and has even caused denials into the TikTok Creator Fund Program.
"I think one of the worst forms of suppression I’ve faced on TikTok was when I tried to join the TikTok Creator Fund and Marketplace. While writing my bio for the Marketplace, when I put two movements I identify with, Black Lives Matter & LGBTQ, TikTok flagged it as “inappropriate content or banned” and I was not allowed to use those words. However, I could type in White Supremacist, Neo-Nazi, and other words that are criminal with no backlash from TikTok. This is blatant racism.
I also noticed that my followers will often drop dramatically, and when I posted a TikTok asking people to check if they were still following me, they realized they weren’t but they never manually unfollowed me, so TikTok is suppressing my platform even further. Also, my videos have dropped in viewership once I began talking about topics around black creators, and there is no reason that my videos should be getting only a couple thousand views when I used to get 30K. That is why I am beginning to start moving to Fanbase as Fanbase is not an ad-based platform, rather it is focused on followers and monetization for everyone. "
Ziggi, After Facing Discrimination On TikTok, These Content Creators Created Their Own eCommunity, Essence
Fanbase is an excellent alternative to those who can easily monetize their content. Still, the issues that arise are the viability of moving an audience to a new platform, whether the said platform will exist in the future, and missing lucrative opportunities in the now traditional social media ecosphere.
Getting Credit on Social Media A lot of the conversation centered around content has been about monetization. TikTok claims to be working on the way to give original choreography credit on the platform. The problem that has plagued these A.I. platforms is that it does not see black people as...people. This issue is chronicled in the 2020 documentary film "Coded Bias," where Joy Buolamwini researches facial recognition technologies at the M.I.T. discovered "that some algorithms could not detect dark-skinned faces or classify women with accuracy."
Will they get dance moves right if they can't tell it's a face? Only time will tell. In the meantime, the fight for equality on these platforms may be an uphill one for those most passionate. The ones who are not making anybody uncomfortable seem to be thriving more and more every day, but if you can't freely speak your truth, how much of your platform is really yours, to begin with?

This week our own Michelle Ngome is back on the podcast. Fresh from Content Marketing World, we recap her experience at the conference. Then go over what it was like to give a presentation and watch fellow AAMA member Chris Cheatum-West present as well. Content Marketing Institute is an AAMA partner, and we encourage members to check out the next one. Michelle says she looks forward to going back to Cleveland, OH, for the conference and some of the sessions were worth the price of admission alone.
Here are some of our favorite clips from the episodes previously published:
