From a young age, Hill had a feeling that his body was different. He struggled with some basic movements and was hospitalized for a few weeks as a young boy after becoming paralyzed when he got the flu. It wasn’t until he was 23 that his parents told him specifically that he had a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a neurological condition that affects the muscles in his arms and legs. CMT threatened to alter Jamal’s entire life, including his passion for swimming. But through sheer will, faith, and determination Jamal has not only, over the years, regained his mobility, but he is also at the top of his game as a competitive swimmer. At the age of 24, the Los Angeles native is ranked number one in the U.S. Paralympic 100 Free and number 22 in the world! As a result, he hopes to head to Tokyo as a member of the 2020 U.S. Paralympic Swim Team to bring home the gold. Jamal’s passion for swimming extends well beyond his personal and professional goals for Tokyo 2020 (20ONE). The latest statistics from the World Health Organization show that roughly 360,000 people lost their lives to drowning in 2016. In the U.S., drowning ranks fifth among the causes of unintentional injury death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In an attempt to lower the global drowning rate, Jamal recently began an initiative to teach One Million people to swim through private trainings, sponsors, and a digital swim school platform. This movement is Swim Up Hill.

In 1991, he won the 200 and 400 individual medleys at WAC Championships, becoming only the second Cowboy to ever win an IM conference title. His time in the 400 IM set a conference championship record and still stands as the pool record at the University of Hawaii. Following college, Clayton served as an age group coach for the Fort Collins Area Swim Team (FAST) before becoming the men’s assistant coach at Brigham Young University. During his six years in Provo, he was instrumental in building one of the most successful swimming programs in the region.

Focus areas include equal play, such as traditional Title IX compliance in athletic departments, sexual harassment, abuse, and assault, as well as employment, pregnancy, and LGBT discrimination. In 2012 she began working on legislative changes to assure club and Olympic sports athletes were as protected from sexual abuse. A new division and a new conference has done little to slow down the success that Phil Davis has had with the UIW swimming and diving program. As a first year member of NCAA Division I, the Cardinals were ineligible from national competition. However, the men jumped in to the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association and promptly won the title in 2013-14. The following year they finished as the CCSA Runner-Ups. Davis is in his 10th year as the women’s coach and ninth year in charge of the men’s program. Starting in 2007-08 through the conclusion of the 2012-13 season, Davis’ teams put together arguably the greatest stretch in UIW Athletics history. The men’s team finished the year ranked in the top 20 in each season and in the top 10 four seasons in a row. The women posted five consecutive top 20 seasons to close out the run. The two programs combined for seven Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles during the stretch that would likely have been more had he sent his top squads to the 2013 championships.

After getting his start as a volunteer coach on Crimson Tide legend Don Gambril’s first Alabama staff, Dennis Pursley has gone on to one of the most extraordinary careers in the sport of swimming, a career that led him to be named one of the 25 most influential people in the history of USA Swimming in 2003. With a career that has taken him all over the globe – including stops as the first head coach of the Australian Institute of Sport, the inaugural director of the United States National Team and most recently the head coach of Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic squad – Pursley is a proven program builder who has made an immediate and significant impact on every team he has touched. That’s why when Alabama was looking for a head coach to take its program back to the highest levels of collegiate swimming and diving, it turned to Pursley.

I swam in high school for Dan Flack, Tom Smith, and Laura Pitman at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. We were the 2009 Public and Independent High School National Champions, and that year, our 200 medley relay set the National Public and Independent High School record (I was the fly leg). I was a team captain for Baylor from 2009-2010. In college, I walked on to the University of Alabama's swim team, but earned a scholarship after my freshman year. I competed at the SEC Championships all four years, and I ranked 6th in UA's all-time top 10 in the 200 IM in 2011 and 4th in the 200 free in 2012. I won UA's Debra Hobart Perseverance, Determination and Spirit Award two years in a row (2011 and 2012), the Leadership Award in 2014, and I was a team captain my junior and senior years (2013 and 2014). Once I "retired" from swimming after college, I had no intentions to go back to the sport -- I had undergraduate degrees in Journalism, French, and Nutrition, and I was working on my Masters degree in Journalism. After grad school, I was hired as an editor for The Paris News in Paris, TX, but I fell in love with an Air Force pilot, and he found out he was getting transferred to North Dakota. I quit my job, we eloped, and I went with him. We were fixing up our house at the time so I didn't want to jump right back into journalism, but I decided to coach/teach swim lessons on the side as a way to get me out of the house. Long story short, for the second time in my life, I fell in love with the water, and here we are.
