Welcome to The Wellbeing Garden.

In this episode I’m joined again by my friend, Rachel Marley-Tree, for a conversation in The Wellbeing Garden.

We discuss an interesting topic of the effects of a dependency on devices and social media, and ways to overcome this to reconnect with others and nature.

This conversation was inspired by my decision to step away from social media to live a more meaningful life and allow a deeper connection with nature and others.

I wrote an article HERE on this topic, if you’re interested to know more about my journey away from social media.

Thanks for joining me again in The Wellbeing Garden.

Today’s short and sweet episode has a few tips for growing healthy food in pots and containers.

I’ve grown food in bathtubs, wheelbarrow, buckets and always recycled or upcycled items that I think would look good or suit growing edible crops.

Here’s my tips for healthy potted plants;

  • Keep the soil in containers healthy through each season by topping it up. The soil level can drop in containers, so top up with fresh potting mix.
  • Add a small amount of slow release fertiliser to all potted plants every season, and then apply a deep watering.
  • A fortnightly application of liquid fertiliser gives plants the nutrients needed to produce an abundance of crops and flowers. Apply all over soil AND foliage.
  • Check roots of plants in pots/containers. If they’re looking all tangled and overgrown then it’s time to pot up to a larger size pot or container and add fresh potting mix.
  • Prune any damaged, diseased or overgrown foliage off potted plants to encourage healthy new growth.
  • If ants have moved into your pots then the soil could be very dry. Place the whole pot and plant in a large bucket of water and soak for about 20 minutes. This gives the soil and roots a good soaking of water. Then apply any extra potting mix or compost to top up the soil level.

Welcome again to The Wellbeing Garden!

When the weather changes do you have an alternative activity to do with your gardeners or for yourself?

In this episode I share ideas for Plan B activities and how to continue to enjoy gardening through all weather conditions.

Here’s what I do…

  • Check the weather the week prior to the gardening day and again the day before.
  • Have a Plan B. Pack a few items that could be helpful if you need to change plans. Seed sowing is a great Plan B activity and can be done in any space, indoors or out. Or create a vision board with old gardening magazines.
  • Don’t cancel activities! Show up and the make the time enjoyable for everyone.
  • Make sure gardeners are always comfortable, warm or cool depending on the weather, safe and happily involved in the activity.

Find other ways to keep gardening through bad weather in my article HERE.

Episode 028 – How to work in the Therapeutic Horticulture industry.

Therapeutic Horticulture is the process of using plants and garden-based activities to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages and abilities. It’s a holistic approach to wellness as garden-based activities help to connect with the mind, body and soul.

It’s also known as Horticultural Therapy, Social and Therapeutic Horticulture, Therapeutic Gardening or Garden Therapy. This will depend on the programs that are provided and your location. In Australia we call it Therapeutic Horticulture.

A person who delivers therapeutic gardening activities is known as a Horticultural Therapist or Therapeutic Horticulturist.

In this episode I’ll share ways to work in this wonderful field.

I’ll cover;

  • What is Therapeutic Horticulture
  • Benefits of gardening for health and wellbeing
  • Running a business in the field of TH
  • Types of programs
  • The aims of gardening programs
  • How to get started delivering programs as your own business or working for an organisation
  • Risk management
  • Measuring outcomes
  • And a few more tips to guide you along your journey in TH

Gardening as therapy has been used for centuries to cultivate health and wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities.

For many people, especially those living within dementia support units, access to outdoor spaces can be limited.

Such an environment, where they have limited access to the outdoors, unable to enjoy gardening activities and a general lack of nutritious fresh food, can lead to depression, anxiety, confusion, stress and other impacts on emotional and physical wellbeing.

Many studies clearly show a connection between improvements to physical, psychological and social wellness from accessing outdoor spaces and participating in gardening activities, especially when fresh food is grown.

Gardens within aged care homes, respite centres and community services not only provide a place for gardeners to enjoy getting their hands in the earth, but they also offer opportunities for growing fresh, nutrient-packed food onsite.

Many people living within aged care are being served food that is lacking vital nutrients and flavour, but by having easy access to seasonally grown food meals can be improved nutritionally and also taste delicious.

Providing regular garden activities within safe outdoor spaces not only provides positive experiences, but also the added benefits of having fresh, homegrown food included in meals.

In this episode I share ideas for establishing gardens within aged care homes, community centres, community gardens and also school gardens and also how to coordinate and run a gardening program for everyone to enjoy.

We cover;

  • The benefits of a gardening program
  • Planning, building and nurturing your communal gardens
  • Suggested activities for the program
  • Implementing a successful program

Here’s the extra resources that you may find helpful…

  • Growing food in small spaces
  • 5 Easy ways to feed your garden and grow more food
  • How to compost
  • Ways to maintain your tools and equipment

Lack of time may be the number one thing that stops people from enjoying gardening, and it’s something I get asked about regularly.

In episode 009 I share a few simple ways to grow food in small spaces, and mentioned that a lot time and space were two things most people thought was needed to grow a thriving garden…and maybe money too!

But you don’t need a lot of these, you just need a few basic ideas and simple sustainable techniques to grow and enjoy gardening.

A few years ago I was inspired to write an article on this topic, after reading research for my Horticultural Therapy studies, on the health benefits from just 30 minutes, a few times a week in the garden.

I wanted to share a list of many activities that could be completed in just 30 minutes of gardening, or relaxing, time.

You’ll find the full article here - http://soiltosupper.com/just-30-minutes-in-the-garden-you-can/

There are many wonderful things that you can enjoy in the garden and in this episode I share a few suggestions, including;

  • Weeding your garden
  • Planting seedlings
  • Harvesting a meal or some fresh herbs
  • Planting a tree, or two
  • Creating a compost pile
  • Fertilising plants
  • Cut a bunch of bananas
  • Watering your garden

These all improve physical and psychological wellbeing and a perfect for any age or ability.

Through my studies in Horticulture and Permaculture Design I’ve gained skills to create amazing gardens, and through the years I’ve developed simple methods to save time and money!

In this episode I share my simple methods for creating a new garden or for revamping existing gardens.

Here’s the simple steps I’ve covered…

  • When creating gardens the BEST place to start is with planning. This saves time and money! Create a vision board and add all the features and plants you’d like in your garden. Also consider how much time, money and space you have for these gardens. Create a ‘shopping list’ of the foods you enjoy eating as this helps with planning what to grow.

“Dream BIG but start small. Make gardening a pleasure not a chore!”

  • Once you’ve planned your garden now it’s time to get your hands dirty! Time to create your garden. Follow your plans and start with paths, fences, seating and other garden elements.

Then create gardens by following a ‘no-dig’ method, set up an ‘in-garden’ compost system, plant trees and shrubs. Find links to these methods below.

  • After establishing your garden features and garden beds you can also start growing in containers.

Consider growing herbs, flowers and leafy greens. When potting use THE best potting mix you can buy and add extra fertiliser to feed plants long term.

  • The next step is to get your new plants growing! Follow the list you created of your favourite foods and start with these.

Also choose plants suitable for your climate and the current season and grow plants from seeds, seedlings or established plants.

  • Nurturing your garden is super important to keep your plants thriving and producing abundant crops.

Follow organic gardening methods, feed the soil not the plants, harvest foods regularly and observe everything going on so you can support your garden’s growth. Keep a garden kit on hand with all your favourite tools, equipment and organic garden products to save time when heading out to the garden!
