Cosmic Bos Improv Music Podcast: Recent Episodes

Cosmic Bos: Improv music and creative wizardry

Improvised music, revised, polished and podcasted Cosmic Bos enjoy making music, writing it takes a long time though, so these monkeys just make it up, inviting guest musicians along, then they take the results and do some revisions. It's a musical experiment of sorts.

The show itself, was like an hour of radio from another dimension, hosted by Jethro & Jeffrey (two monkeys) and Nick, it's an improvised comedy radio podcast experience with a cherry on top (DISCLAIMER: there is no cherry on top, the cherry is a lie). The show is no longer like this, in fact Season 3 has seen a big shift in tone, with the monkeys off adventuring, Nick and Andy have teamed up with Joe Philogene to make fully improvised music, with no revisions.

An albums worth of music each month with some amazing guest musicians, this truly is a one of a kind podcast experience.

Come for an adventure into the magical musical forest with the Cosmic Bos team.

What is ASMR? Well, here is a little piece I (Andy) got A.I to write about it

Unveiling the Mysteries of ASMR: The Gateway to Sensory Transcendence

ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a phenomenon characterized by tingling sensations that typically begin on the scalp and move down the neck and spine. These triggers, whether in the form of whispering, tapping, or crinkling sounds, have the power to evoke a deeply relaxing and pleasurable response in individuals.

The enigmatic allure of ASMR lies in its ability to tap into our senses with precision and delicacy, creating a profound connection between audio-visual stimuli and our emotional well-being. It serves as a portal through which individuals can escape the cacophony of daily life and find solace in the gentle whispers and subtle sounds that massage their senses.

ASMR triggers, those specific sounds and actions that elicit tingling sensations, are as diverse as the individuals who experience them. From the soft brushing of fingertips to the rhythmic tapping of raindrops, these triggers have a unique capacity to provoke a heightened state of sensory awareness, transporting individuals to a realm of heightened receptivity.

The spiritual underpinnings of ASMR extend beyond the realm of physical sensation, offering a gateway to transcendental experiences and heightened consciousness. The delicate dance of triggers and tingles creates a meditative space where individuals can explore the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, yielding a sense of inner peace and harmony.

In the quest to harness the transformative power of ASMR for the betterment of humanity, we must delve deeper into the spiritual dimensions of this sensory phenomenon. By embracing the profound impact of ASMR on our emotional and spiritual well-being, we can unlock the potential for personal growth, healing, and self-discovery.

As we immerse ourselves in the enchanting world of ASMR triggers and tingles, we embark on a journey of sensory exploration and enlightenment. By embracing the spiritual properties of ASMR, we open ourselves to a realm of profound sensory experiences that have the potential to reshape our understanding of the human psyche and the mysteries of our existence.

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge podcast with Cosmic Bos, this is episode 2.6 Plantlife, and Nick and Andy are back! After being AWOL for several months, Professor Briiiiiiiiiiiian Cox found them in a small room just by the control room. It will all make sense when you listen to it.

Come on a musical adventure with your hosts Cosmic Bos as we delve into the wonderful world of Plant themed music, containing some truly exceptional music by some of the greatest indie artists working today.

Congratulations to John Serrano and James Slattery for winning the People's Choice Award for their Funky song 'Adrenaline Fire' from episode 2.5 Funk Drunk Love.

SPOILER ALERT! This will be the final episode of the Monthly Music Challenge for the forseeable future, as you might have been able to guess, running the MMC has been a pretty tough job for Nick and Andy, and they need to bring it to a close early so they can focus on the difficult task of being alive.

A massive thank you to everyone that has supported us over this year with the making of the podcast, it has been a labour of love (as we make no money from it) and time has unfortunatly slipped through our fingers and we need to change course in order to keep our sanity. Although judging by this episode we may not have had any sanity to begin with.

Set list for this episode in order (much to Big Mic's dismay)

    1. Cosmic Bos ft. Joe Philogene and Dayne Howcroft - Earth's Children
    1. John Serrano - El Bosque
    1. Colin Pimlott - The Garden Widower
    1. A Sea Warren - Plant Life
    1. Between Daze - I Might
    1. Andrew Hartshorn - Thriving in the Wilderness
    1. Hellwaddler - Planting Pot Plants Plotting Top Plans
    1. John Serrano - Queen of the Forest

You can pick up Cosmic Bos's song 'Earth's Children' on the album MMC1 (2023) from bandcamp

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-1-2023-album and you can get it on CD if you like physical media. It can also be heard on all good streaming sites, and many of the bad ones too.

You can also pick up the song 'Queen of the Forest' by John Serrano on his amazing album 'Alive'

https://johnserrano.bandcamp.com/album/alive-lp which is coming out on Monochorme Motif records on the 6th September

We won't be running a people's choice award for this episode as there are so few songs to choose from, instead we are giving Big Mic choice awards to everyone that sent in a song, congratulations to John Serrano, Colin Pimlott, A Sea Warren, Between Daze, Andrew Hartshorn and Hellwaddler, you are all winners.

Thanks again for all the support, the podcast will be back next month with something a little different, and we will do a best of/awards thing in December to cap off the year and tie in to the release of our album.

Stay Beeeeeeeautiful

So, this episode was meant to be out back on the 1st of June, but Nick and Andy from Cosmic Bos went AWOL so it was left up to me, Big Mic! to pull it all together so that you wonderful listeners and musician subs could hear it.

Oh, it's Big Mic by the way, I've had to step in and start running the MMC Challenger, I have enlisted David Battenberg Cake and the Sexy German to go and press the buttons (not RUB the buttons as SG seems prone to doing) so that this episode made it off of the interdimensional Rocket Submarine Train and into your podcast feed.

This is Episode 2.5 - Funk Drunk Love, co-curated with the one and only Uncle Funkbeard (go follow the majestic Funkle on X, and check out the Only The Host YouTube Channel to see all of the funky goings on) and it features 14 of the funkiest, drunkiest and loveiest songs on the whole of the interweb, created by a handful of the greatest indie musicians working today.

The opening song is by Cosmic Bos themselves, they managed to finish up their song before they dissapeared from the MMC Challenger, the song is called 'Drunk on Your Love' and can be purchased from bandcamp here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/track/drunk-on-your-love-feel-that-funky-heart-beating please consider giving them some money, that might actually get them back from wherever it is that they have gone AWOL to.

They also made a nice little video to go with it, which you can watch and comment on here - https://youtu.be/wQnXo4jZdOI?si=HgQRFXqoj42G7hEj

I, Big Mic, have done all that I can to try and keep the format the same as what the Bos boys would do, not sure why I bothered, I could have done whatever I like because I'm Big Mic! But for the sake of all you listeners and submitters I've tried to keep it as close to the same as possible.

It wasn't easy, have you ever tried to control a Cake and a sexy German while running a human circus in an engine room with a load of Midgets in sexy costumes while having to put up with Professor Briiiiiiiiiiian Cox and a future version of yourself that controls the universe in the future? Didn't think so.

Format the same as usual, so we had the Peoples Choice Award winners from the previous episode, 2.4 Animals, and there were 3 of them! So big shout out to Natalie Williams Calhoun (NWC), Tonal Drift (TD) and A Sea Warren (Al or Owl), you all won a People Choice Award for your excellent Animals based songs, really good they were.

You can vote in the Peoples Choice Award for this episode right here on this link (Insert link here)

As we aren't sure where Nick and Andy are, I, Big Mic, decided we would give you all a bit longer to complete the next challenge, so you have till the 30th August to get your 2.6 songs into the Bos boys. Send your mp3's and a little Bio and write up to cosmicbos@gmail.com to be included in the next episode. The theme is Plantlife, 2.6 - Plantlife. It's a bit like parklife by Bluh but more Plant based. So, yeah get on with it!

Once again, big shout out to Uncle Funkbeard for all he did for this episode, utter legend!

Here is the list of songs that go with this episode, in my, Big Mic's Big Number Order, so you can't cheat and skip through to a particular song, you have to listen to the whole thing!

    1. Cosmic Bos - Drunk On Your Love (Feel That Funky Heart Beating)
    1. Uncle Funkbeard - FOOL
    1. A Sea Warren - Funk Drunk Love
    1. Colin Pimlott - Funky Drunk Kind of Love
    1. TruckDog & the Go People - Fulfill the Need
    1. Andrew Hartshorn - Who Brings the Funk to Your Life
    1. Taylor Lidstone - Barsnacks
    1. John Serrano and James Slattery - Adrenaline Fire
    1. Mario Marino - Plumage
    1. Voltage Poetry Project - When the Wine Pours
    1. Black Water Canyon - Whiskey Swamp
    1. Chemical Shift - Awaken
    1. Notehead - Funky Butt Loving
    1. Hellwaddler - PFunky

There you go, hopefully it's as good as the show normally is, we did our best without the Bos chaps, please go vote in the Peoples Choice Award, and if you are a musician that wants to submit to the MMC 2.6 - Plantlife challenge, you have till the 30th August 2024 to get your songs in.

I am the one and only Big Mic from now, there is obviously Big Mic from the future who controls the universe, he's a lovely chap.

Enjoy the episode and stay awesome sauce

Welcome to the Extra part of the Monthly Music Challenge 2.3 Intergalactic episode.

Join Andy and Nick (Cosmic Bos) as they make ammends for a rather massive faux par on their part, missing off a song from the list.

So firstly, a huge Sorry to Taylor Lidstone, Peoples Choice Award Winning artist and utter legend, Taylor, your Intergalactic song is amazeballs! We didn't miss it off of the list because it didn't fit the theme, we missed it off because Big Mic has been moving all the emails about from 6 years in the future. Why he was ever given time manipulation powers will never make sense.

Please enjoy this extra add on part of Monthly Music Challenge 2.3 Intergalactic episode, containing the amazing Taylor Lidstone song 'Don't Go Without Me', as well as the Late Sub song 'Interstella' by Smokin' Cola, and a respin of Cosmic Bos Space Babies 2 (Intergalactic Super Fantastic Imagination Tactic)

Hello Music fans,

Welcome to a special presentation podcast by the hosts of the Monthly Music Challenge, Cosmic Bos (one S). Although this is the podcast feed for the MMC, it is also the place that Cosmic Bos put their special presentations and some other guff, like, if they want to chat about something for some reason.

Cosmic Bos are Nick and Andy Jackson, brothers from the South of the UK, making music and music videos and sharing them with the world.

Virtual Normality 3 is our third EP in the Virtual Normality series (you can tell by the 3 after the words Virtual and Normality), with the first one having come out way back in 2021 before the Monthly Music Challenge even existed, the second one hit internet shelves in 2022 mere months before the MMC was launched, and then this third one slipped onto the intershelves on the final day of 2023 (so we can still claim it came out in '23). https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-normality-3

A little Cosmic Bos history on this subject: Virtual Normality started life as a showcase for Nick and Andy of their songwriting skills, at the time, Cosmic Bos were making an improvised music podcast, with Nick and Andy working with Joe Philogene and producing 4 epic Full album improv sessions in 2021. 'Space Babies' was born from the improv sessions and was given a coat of production paint to open the EP, with 'Take it Easier', 'It's Always You' and 'Ride Another Wave' being used from the songbooks. 'Stay Inside' was a new song made with TexMex Shaman and loving placed on the EP.

Flash forward a year and Cosmic Bos release Virtual Normality 2, having won a 'Judge's Choice' Award for their album '2 A.M it's Mission Time' it was decided that Nick and Andy would give the songwriting their full focus. VN2 contained 4 songs that had been born from the Music Weeklies challenge on X (formerly Twitter) as well as a Cosmic Bos remix of a song by Andrew Hartshorn and Natalie Williams Calhoun. It also served as the blueprint for the Monthly Music Challenge.

At the end of the first year of the Monthly Music Challenge, Cosmic Bos turned their attention to Virtual Normality 3, knowing that they wanted it to showcase what the future may hold, just as the previous two VN EP's had. And that is what this podcast is about.

Come on a journey with Nick Jackson and Andy Jackson of Cosmic Bos as they discuss their new 5 track EP Virtual Normality 3, which you can buy on bandcamp right now here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-normality-3

Also, if you fancy a free copy of the EP, then all you need to do is purchase our CD from Monochrome Motif Records here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-1-2023-album - Containing our 10 songs for the first year of the Monthly Music Challenge, and a bonus free digital download of Virtual Normality 3.

Thank you for listening, regular Monthly Music Challenge will be back on the 4th of Feb 2024, you have until the 2nd Feb to write your 'First Impressions' songs, and then email mp3 and bio to us at cosmicbos@gmail.com

Hello dear listener,

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge podcast with your hosts Cosmic Bos, they are Nick and Andy Jackson, brothers from the UK that make lots of music, and host this music challenge, monthly, in podcast form.

This is the introduction episode to the second year of the Monthly Music Challenge.

What is the Monthly Music Challenge?

Good question, it is a podcast, audioshow, that comes out monthly, and contains music submitted around a theme each month. We did it all last year, and had 10 themes that made up MMC 1.

Cosmic Bos (your show hosts) put their efforts out as a CD under Monochrome Motif records, which you can purchase from bandcamp here

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-1-2023-album

How do I get involved?

If you are a musician, and you would like to submit music to the Monthly Music Challenge podcast, please send mp3's with a bio (for first timers) and a little write up about your track to cosmicbos@gmail.com

We listen to all submissions and craft a unique show out of them, the peeps of the MMC are the cream of the indie music scene, and you can be a part of it too.

What is the theme for Jan 2024?

Well, the theme for Jan 2024 is - First Impressions

You have till the 2nd of Feb to get your 'First Impressions' songs in.

Is there a way to submit songs from previous themes of the MMC?

Funny you should ask, we had a segment last year we called 'Late Subs' to accomodate peeps that missed the deadline, and we will probably bring that back for this season of podcasting.

So if you would like to make a song or piece of music about any of the themes from MMC1 then please do, and submit them in mp3 form to cosmicbos@gmail.com

MMC1 Themes for late subs are:

New Beginnings, Escape, Ignorance, Winning, Razzmajazz, Artificial Intelligence, Mother Earth, Dreams, Super Spectacular & Finale

So for this intro episode we didn't really get any submissions, we had suggested that if peeps were up for it they could make a track to go with the theme 'Intro'. Only one person took up the challenge, the one and only Andrew Hartshorn. Who also put out an MMC 1 album from his efforts on the MMC in 2023. Go buy a copy on bandcamp, it's awesome sauce and well worth your eartime.

Also, we hastily put our 'Intro' song together, and are getting it to pull double duties for now, as the podcast intro AND our MMC 2 intro. Fun times.

Please like, share, comment and subscribe to Cosmic Bos

Now get to work, you've got music to make

Peace and infinite cake

Now that is one massive bowl of crispy chicken soup for the soul, this is the bit of the podcast write up where we would usually announce the next theme, but technically there isn't one. However, as we have already decided that we're coming back next year to do Monthly Music Challenge 2, we offer up a little winter challenge for the keen and eager. In Janurary, Cosmic Bos will do a 'MMC 2.0 intro' episode, to reintroduce the idea for next year, and give peeps the month of Jan to jam their themed jam. If you want to get in ahead of the game a bit, then we will spin on the show any 'intro's' you wish to make for your MMC2 album. We will make one, probably use it to double up as a theme tune for MMC2 podcast, not sure yet. But anyway, you have until the beginning of 2024 to send us any intros you wish, we will play them in the MMC 2.0 ep, keep 'em short, they are just intro's.

With the year coming to close in a short while, we are going to do the Monthly Music Challenge awards for year 1, if you have taken part this year you are in the runnings for an award, we will split it into two parts, with a Gold and Silver version of each award, maybe, still pondering it to be honest.

If you wanted to vote for your favourite songs from any of the previous episodes, please drop a comment on the youtube vid for the coresponding episode, we will listen to your advice, or at least read and like the comment.

Please like, share and subscribe to Cosmic Bos on youtube, we do video work too for your eyeballs.

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos Podcast (the MMC)

This is Episode 1.8 Dreams

Join Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) as we delve deep into dreamland, listening for clue as to if this is a wonderful dream we have found ourselves in, or a twisted nightmare from which we can not escape!

With the world in the questionable state it is currently in, it only seemed right to let the musicians of the MMC explore the internal space, where the mind is allowed to explore freely, to ponder the more existential elements of our shared experience, it could all, the whole darn lot of everything everywhere, be a dream, or a simulation, or even just the passing thoughts of an interdimentional hyper disco chicken cruising the open rainbow road! Who knows? Well not us, but maybe some answers lie in the music of this months music challenge.

So prepare to explore the world of Dreams with the musical stylings of Mobidextrous, Man of Arun, Notehead, TexMex Shaman (& StonerJazz), Tonal Drift, Andrew Hartshorn, A Sea Warren, Michel Debois, Chemical Shift (Broken Nomads), Peter Hawkey, Hellwaddler, John Serrano and your hosts Cosmic Bos, as well as a special presentation by the supergroup collaboration of Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren! What more could you ask for?

Cosmic Bos put out our tracks as an EP on all good sites, but they also put it out on bandcamp where you can exchange money for music, it's a clever system that was developed by Gnomes a long time ago, but it seems to still be working to this very day. Here is the link to our EP, it has an alternative cover on BC too!

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-18-dreams

You can also find several of the tracks in the show on Bandcamp or soundcloud or YouTube, depends where the amazing artists post them. Please support these awesome indie artists by visiting, listening and possibly even buying their music on Bandcamp. I know for a fact that John Serrano's track 'Crisp' is available on Bandcamp and you probably all should buy it, as well as HJJ&W's track too (from the 22nd September).

Super outergalactic shout out to Only the Host and his amazing team, we love you guys and gals. And the Music Weeklies peeps too, keeping new music fresh on the internet.

The next theme for the Monthly Music Challenge is our 9th one, and it is #SuperSpectacular, that's MMC 1.9 - SuperSpectacular

Send your mp3's with a little write up about the song (and a bio about yourself if you haven't been on the show already) to cosmicbos@gmail.com

You have until the 6th of October to get your SuperSpectacular songs to us for inclusion, we still have the late Subs section so if you wish to submit something under any of our previous themes then you can and we might play it in the Late Subs portion of the episode.

SuperSpectacular will be the penultimate episode of MMC1, with only a final, as yet unknown theme, to go with MMC 1.10, but feel free to submit anything from the Late Sub category whenever you like. If you have played along all year, or are considering going back to take on the challenge, then on completion you will have a 10 track album, and that's pretty winning in our kindles.

Please take the time to comment, follow, share, subscribe to all the amazing artists featured on the show, and buy their music, it's absolutely worth every smeckle, the least you can do is leave a comment, and comments make artists feel validated, so pwease, pwease, pwease we beg you, leave a comment or two to feed our dopimine addictions.

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos podcast (the MMC)

Episode 1.7 - Mother Earth

Join Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) as we explore the musical interpretations created for our wonderful Mother Earth by some of the most talented musicians in the whole world. What did we all choose to say about Gaia, the great ball on which we all reside ? Well you are in for a treat friends, as all this music has been environmentally sourced, has an extremely low carbon footprint and has travelled from around our great planet without clocking in any airmiles (email miles don't count).

Prepare to give praise to Gaia, Mother Earth, the big Blue & Green, with the musical stylings of Mobidextrous, Andrew Hartshorn, Hellwaddler, Trench Gun, Aye Nevo, Man of Arun, TexMex Shaman, Taylor Lidstone, A Sea Warren, Notehead, JPeck, Trommelfell.MB and your idiotic hosts Cosmic Bos with special guests Joe Philogene and Dayne Howcroft.

The offices of Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren (HJJ&W) present to you the minutes from the quarterly review meeting conducted by the visual promotional media department in late July 2023.

Due to time constrainted the video department would like to offer their appologies for being unable to meet the deadlines set by the record label Monochrome Motif, providing neither the promotional visual material for the single 'Playing Office' or the subsequent planned singles 'The Canvasser' and 'Repressent Me', all tracks featured on the Debut album by Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren 'Sound Investments'.

As the album release is imminent (4th August 2023) it has been decided to package the minutes from our meeting as a preview podcast to provide some insight into the process of making an album in a month from 4 seperate locations across the United Kingdom, as well as showcase a cross section of the material contained on 'Sound Investments'.

The album 'Sound Investments' will be available to purchase in CD form from bandcamp from the 4th August 2023, and it contains 11 tracks all built in the month of May for the Lights and Lines album writing club competition. The single 'Playing Office' was part of the Album Writing Club 2023 playlist and can be found here Playing Office by HJJ&W on Soundcloud

The album was unsuccessful in securing any recognition from the competition, but due to business planning the partners had managed to secure a release for the album with Monochrome Motif.

Monochrome Motif on Bandcamp

It should be noted for the minutes that Andrew Hartshorn is both the 'Hartshorn' in HJJ&W AND the CEO of Monochrome Motif records, placing him in a fortuatous position for negotiating the release of 'Sound Investments'.

https://hartshornjacksonjacksonwarren.bandcamp.com

Contained within this preview podcast:

  • Radio promotional material no.23
  • Playing Office
  • The Canvasser
  • Represent Me
  • Radio promotional material no.42

Within the preview podcast you will find this extensive sample of the album.

Including recordings from the progress discussions with Andrew Hartshorn and Al Warren, Cosmic Bos (Nick and Andy Jackson) guide you through the wonderful world of modern office life as musicians trying to juggle the responsibilities of existence. All tracks written, performed & produced by Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren.

Thank you for you time, and please consider purchasing this album in all seriousness. The visual marketing department wil be placed on Incentive Plans to ensure the completion of their assignments, and the Partners of HJJ&W do not wish the incompetencies of this department to reflect negatively on the company as a whole.

This Quarterly review meeting has been made available by Andy Jackson & Nick Jackson, for the public records, under the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos Podcast label. For more details on all the partners of HJJ&W please refer to the Monthly Music Challenge in which they all participate.

Re: Poseidon launch

And that's all the hashtag songs, Outer Galactic shout out to all the amazing musicians that sent in their tracks, you guys are awesome and we love all of you, let's spread the word and get even more creative, talented musicians involved.

We added a little bonus feature to the end of this show too, as we are evolving this idea and watching it take shape. We were asked by The Word Alchemist to do an instrumental version of one of Nick's older songs, which we did, and then it seemed only natural to add the vocal and before we knew it we had a fully finished song.

So, we launch this new feature into the Monthly Music Challenge by in which, if the inspiration from the hashtag of the month isn't grabbing you, you can raid your musical archive and spruce up, rework or simply redo something from your songbook, we are calling this section

FromTheSongbook songs And Cosmic Bos are going first with this, so here's the first entry to the Songbook section of the MMC

    1. Heart Holder - Cosmic Bos

Heart Holder was originally recorded by Cosmic Bos as part of a special presentation in Season 2 of our podcast, and it's a totally banger, with Nick taking the lead vocal and the guitars pumping it all up. It was fun doing a proper recording of it, and as is the usual Bos way, we will see where this feature goes, we have plenty of songs in our own songbooks which may appear here...

Hello friends,

So the Monthly Music Challenge is well on it's way now, into the second hashtag (#Escape if you weren't aware), and the challenge is coming to a close for the music makers of the Music Weeklies, there has been some excellent submissions to the MMC from that bunch (looking at you Trench Gun), and all you other music makers that need a bit more time, you still have until the 3rd March to submit your songs to the podcast.

As for this song, the one that is this little bitesize podcast, Nick and I (Andy) worked out some guitar at the weekend, I then recorded a musical outline (using just 3 guitars), put some drum loops in, wrote the lyric, sung the lyric, released the video to the music weeklies world.

The song is about being ready to escape when things go bad, and getting out together, not leaving anyone behind. For all the crazy in the world, it's not a problem if we can make good our escape.

Please like, share and subscribe

And send your Escape songs to us before the 3rd of March 2023.

Hello,

Welcome to this quick little podcast containing Cosmic Bos's entry to the #industrial music challenge presented by Music Weeklies.

#Industrial marks the final hashtag for January and you can submit tracks made under this banner up until the 3rd Feb.

Next week will be Monthly Music Challenge 1.1 New Beginnings, and you can still submit your songs made around that banner until the 3rd Feb too (as well as Pixels and Geisha).

The third hashtag for 2023 is #Geisha

You can now submit Geisha inspired songs to the Monthly Music Challenge for possible inclusion in the first proper episode of MMC

Submissions for MMC 1.1 New Beginnings open until the 3rd Feb 2023, so get a move on music makers.

This song is Cosmic Bos' submission to the Geisha challenge, not our usual style for sure, we went with a remix angle rather then an imitation one, not sure we could learn the intricacies of traditional Japanese music in a few days, so instead we added beats and bass, modern it up a bit.

Hello friends,

As Cosmic Bos are now running the Monthly Music Challenge, we are a little light on music videos to pepper up our podcast feed. So we will be adding our hashtag songs for the other weeks of the Music Weeklies challenge into our podcast feed, to use the bandwidth.

This first month of the Monthly Music Challenge is focused on the hashtag New Beginnings - and the entries have been coming in, we are really excited to put together the first proper episode of the Monthly Music Challenge, and we are equally excited to see where it goes, come on the journey with us fellow music makers, come make an album across the year.

Email your mp3's to cosmicbos@gmail.com around the theme New Beginnings by the 3rd of Feb (which will be the date of the next hashtag). You can also send us now songs written around the 2nd hashtag of month 1 #Pixels.

We are still unsure of how this is going to play out, but we are well aware of several musicians that took part in the Pixels hashtag for music weeklies that didn't take part in the New Beginnings one, and we would really like to spin your tracks in this first month episode.

Anyway, thanks for reading all this, this actual podcast is just the demo song that I (Andy) put together for the Pixels hashtag. It was spun on New Music Saturday and got a rave review from the chaps there. What do you recon, any good?

A week into the Monthly Music Challenge and the @musicweeklies chaps have closed the door on submissions and opened up the next hashtag, so @CosmicBos present to you their song 'Nude Beginnings' in its raw week old form.

We will now begin the tweaking process, tidy this mess up, get some sweet harmonies in there, maybe a guitar or two more, and I've been eyeing up the bagpipes for a track too (not that I can play them, or have any).

You have until the 3rd of Feb to send us your #NewBeginnings track for inclusion in the Monthly round up (Coming shortly after the 3rd Feb - once we've recorded the thing)

The new hashtag is now open for submission too, you have a week to do it for the Music Weeklies challenge, and three weeks to do it for the Monthly Challenge. Hopefully that makes sense, we are making this up as we go along pretty much.

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge with @CosmicBos podcast

This is the introduction episode, laying out how it's going to go down for the rest of the year.

Let Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) be your guides through the wonderful world of music creation, working with the sublime musicians of Music Weeklies @MusicWeeklies CB will be making a new song every week in line with their rules, but on the side CB will be offering up the chance for music made within the month (leaning heavily on the first hashtag of each month) to be played on this podcast, and get comments from Nick and Andy.

Podcast play (PP) will not be reserved exclusively for the first hashtag (which btw is #NewBeginnings), and any of Music Weeklies hashtags generated in the given month are viable for PP, please send your mp3's (not WAVs, our inbox will die) to cosmicbos@gmail.com with the hashtag in the subject line, and a bit of info about yourself so we can give you the promo in the podcast that you deserve.

We won't be playing any material that doesn't meet the Music Weeklies guidelines or our Monthly Music Challenge ones either, to get airplay and PP for such songs you should go check out the New Music Saturdays guys (they have a podcast of their show too, check it out).

So, get to work lovely musicians, songwriters, audio creatives

You have until the 3rd of Feb (2023) to submit for the January hashtags, of which the first one (and the one you can have a month to work on) is #NewBeginnings

Check back on Twitter on the 13th, 20th and 27th of Jan to find out the other three hashtags that we will accept PP on.

This should be fun, we can't wait to hear from you

Any questions please come find us on Twitter @CosmicBos where we will attempt to answer them (SPOILER ALERT! we might not be able to)

Hello friends,

Stop Saying 1984 to Make a Point by Cosmic Bos

From our Judges Choice Award Winning Album

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/2-a-m-its-mission-time

This song is about how people often quote and use the ideas presented in the text of 1984 by George Orwell, to make a point, which ultimately just reveals that the person saying it has not read or understood the text they are quoting, and ironically furthering some of the more alarming elements of the text. Probably not the sort of thing someone should write a song about as it is quite meaningless, but, Cosmic Bos did it, and here it is.

Hello you,

Nice to see you here, how's it going?

In 2022, Nick and Andy worked on some really fun, exciting projects, and it seemed fitting to close out the year with a little acoustic performance of a selection of the years songs made by Cosmic Bos.

Also, the boys did a cover of a Dan Wilson song, Dancing on the Moon, which was Baby Theo's favourite song on the year (he made us play it to him lots and lots). There had been plans for a whole 'Dan Wilson' special, but alas, time got the better of us and the idea has been put back on the shelf to be revisited at a later date (WE LOVE YOU DAN WILSON - you are an inspiration)

False Promises (Cosmic Bos Mix) - Andrew Hartshorn ft. Natalie Williams Calhoun, vocalled and remixed by Cosmic Bos

Taken from Cosmic Bos Virtual Normality 2

False Promises is originally a song on Andrew Hartshorn's album Movie House, which featured Natalie Williams Calhoun's sublime Cello playing. Cosmic Bos liked the song, so Andy wrote lyrics and a melody, recorded it with Nick, sent it to Andrew, and then Nick added Bass and Drums (and a couple of other things), and we called it a Bos Mix.

Video shot on a rainy day by Andy out of his front room window.

Available on all good internet platforms, you might even find it in the meta verse, but if you like bandcamp then we suggest this link right here

Hello friends,

Cosmic Bos present to you Nun in a Kayak

From their new EP -

Virtual Normality 2

https://linktr.ee/cosmicbos

This song was written for the Music Weeklies challenge on Twitter, for the hashtag PalinLoop (which was about Palindromes andLoops), and was subsequently rerecorded by Nick and Andy to be part of Virtual Normality 2 (Bandcamp Link)

The song is littered with Palindromes, not all of them, but quite a lot of them.

Welcome fellow traveller,

Here's a linktree you can take shelter under https://linktr.ee/cosmicbos

You have reached the hub of the Cosmic Bos multiverse and begin your journey down the second of our Virtual Normality tours. Last time, we explored Space with Babies, chilled out, stayed inside and then ended with a birth.

So a year later, Cosmic Bos have decided to take you on a different journey. For this year (2022) has been an exploration of songwriting, in it's many varied forms, as well as Cosmic Bos collaborating with other types of musicians to explore music further.

Back in August '22, Andy started taking part in a weekly music challenge that is run primary from Twitter, where each week a hashtag is set and you have one week to make an original piece of music on theme (big thanks to Trench Gun for hooking us in).

To start with Andy didn't take it very seriously, but a few weeks in it was becoming exciting trying to write the best song possible within the very loose restrictions.

So play along with the episode and try and Guess the Hashtag to 4 of the songs, and be WOW'ed by False Promises (Cosmic Bos Mix) by Andrew Hartshorn ft. Natalie Williams Calhoun. The move towards orchestration is a spoiler alert for next year.

Full track listing for Virtual Normality 2

  1. Morning Coffee

This song is part of the album that Cosmic Bos made for the @LightsAndLines Album in a Month competition back in May 2022, they picked up a Judges Choice Award. The song is a tribute to Bill Hicks, using some moments from his life to thread his comedic wit through. He was a talent that was taken from this world too soon, and it is a shame he didn't get the chance to realise some of his bolder ideas, we miss you Bill.

BARDS FOR HIRE by Andy Jackson

Words for the ages
Plastered on pages in books no one reads
Tales of wonder
Why aren’t they considering remaking these?

Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
Give us coin and we’ll give you fire
Early birds bought down the wire
Singing all that you desire
Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
A little coin’s all we require
We’ve hooks for days, are you the buyer?
Any requests, just please enquire

Culture scared to grow
Embrace about face and let the future show
Be the boss you want to work for
And be the bosses ideal workforce

Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
Give us coin and we’ll give you fire
Early birds bought down the wire
Singing all that you desire
Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
A little coin’s all we require
We’ve hooks for days, are you the buyer?
Any requests, just please enquire

As B for H we’re here to help you
Perspective shift to make it see through

Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
Give us coin and we’ll give you fire
Early birds bought down the wire
Singing all that you desire
Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
A little coin’s all we require
We’ve hooks for days, are you the buyer?
Any requests, just please enquire

Do do do do do do
La la la la la la

Let’s go, we’re bards for hire
Give us coin and we’ll give you fire
Early birds bought down the wire
Singing all that you desire
Let’s go, we’re bards for hire

RE:MISSION - by Andy Jackson

We’ve got a world to save, it won’t save itself
It’s mission time, put down the wine
The only cause worth fighting for
Nature calls we can’t ignore
The ceilings glass but so’s the floor

Stop conserving superstitions
Evolution in remission, switch position
Mind expanding new decisions
Hope can soon be in remission, it will be okay
But I’m not promising anything

Economic crisis looming from tiktok booming
We stopped consuming
Constant resourcing from dwindling sources
Held together with glue from horses

Stop conserving superstitions
Evolution in remission, quick petition
Mind expanding fresh decisions
Gia could soon be in remission, she will be okay
But for us, it’s too soon to tell

We can choose between help or oh well
The garden of Eden or the gates of Hell
The myth is we’re powerless and under their spell
But truth be told, we are bold, out of our shell

Stop preserving superstitions
Evolution in remission, no commission
Mind expansive clear decisions
Love could well be in remission, new nutrition
Stop in-sighting inquisitions
Growth through learning, is our mission, best position
Mind expanding not demanding
Get your hand in, reply mission, oh yes I’m in

Hello there,

Welcome to the 4th instalment in our special presentation 'Making of an Album', where Andy and Nick break down the details on music making in the 2020's, and how easy it is to do now.

For the month of May 2022 Cosmic Bos took on the 'Album in a Month' challenge put on by Lights and Lines Independent record label, and subsequently produced a 12 track album called '2 A.M, it's Mission Time', which is out now

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/2-a-m-its-mission-time

Wisely, throughout the album in a month process, Andy kept a diary of what was going on, and the Brothers filmed all of the recording session so that ample video footage of the album creation existed. You can see some of this already in the video's we put out for 'Isle of Avalon', 'Money Pwease' and 'Whatever You Say It Is, It Isn't'.

This podcast represents the first half of both the album, and the diary kept for the month, and takes you through the first half of what we did. There will be an accompanying blog to this episode which will have more waffle about it should you wish to read more.

The Cosmic Blog

Part 2 coming next month.

Songs in this episode are :

  1. Re:Mission
  2. Catch a Clue
  3. Bards for Hire
  4. Isle of Avalon
  5. Whatever You Say It Is, It Isn't
  6. Patient Mystery

Money Pwease - Cosmic Bos

from the upcoming album

2 A.M, it's Mission Time

Coming 19th August 2022

Andy and Nick ponder the big question on everyones mind, how do we get money? As musicians, it's a tough one indeed, no one wants to part their hard earned money for music anymore, it truly isn't like the good old days when people actually spent money on music. But it isn't only music that has suffered, all the art forms have really, and the door has been opened up for the demons to come and sell us on a great many dreams, salvation and freedom are just round this corner right here, but you can't go just yet, you have to give us the money pwease.

The song title is the catchphrase of Mona-lisa from Parks and Recreation, one of the greatest shows ever made.

You can give us money over on bandcamp

Catch a Clue - Cosmic Bos

Second song released from our upcoming album '2 A.M, it's Mission Time'. This one comes with a special video we made for it.

Video starring Andy Jackson & Nick Jackson

Special cameo appearance by Theodore Jackson at the end

Using the karaoke booth set up, the boys performed the task of singing this wordy song, several times, getting progressively more inebriated on the way.

Catch a Clue is from Cosmic Bos upcoming album, the one they made in a month for the Album Writing Club competition (for which we won a Judges Choice Award), due to be released to the world on the 19th August. You can already hear/see another track from the record in our podcast feed 'Isle of Avalon'.

Please like, share and subscribe

And a comment or two does wonders for our egos.

You can follow us on all the good socials, the ones you frequent, we are on most of them. Love ya

Catch a Clue lyrics - by Andy Jackson

You never really see what you think you see,
It’s decoded chaos through brain chemistry,
Then reprocessed through your memory
Baring no resemblance to reality
But the clocked stopped and time said meh
It’s like the laws of nature in our rules don’t share
So you climbed to the top for the world to see
Then you got all smashed up by some gravity
Tight rope tied but the gaps too wide
As you’re falling from grace on the rapid side
Course on the horse of catastrophe
Tumble on a comedown from pure ecstasy

Who, who, who do you think ya fooling?

Snooze you lose, the screws, aren’t patrolling for you
Get a grip, get a smarter, catch a clue
The blues and twos, aren’t looking out for you
Get a grip, a non starter, catch a clue
The truths elude, the ever scrolling news
Get to grips, take a moment, catch a clue
It’s up to you, exactly what you choose
Have a think, lightbulb moment, catch a clue

You didn’t hear what you though you heard
Considered for a second it’s clearly absurd
Caribbean pirate got the poop deck bird
Fresh prince showed that paper beat rock
Previous iterations were performed in frocks
Or placed in stocks and then pelted
Condemned quicker than the ice cream melted
Chin up sport it’s all a shifting
Multiverses all coexisting
Nothing short of everything missing

Who, who, who do you think your’e fooling?

Snooze you lose, the screws, aren’t patrolling for you
Get a grip, get a smarter, catch a clue
The blues and twos, aren’t looking out for you
Get a grip, a non starter, catch a clue
The truths elude, the ever scrolling news
Get to grips, take a moment, catch a clue
It’s up to you, exactly what you choose
Have a think, lightbulb moment, catch a clue

Every corner taken straight
Problems problem in a state

Snooze you lose, the screws, aren’t patrolling for you
Get a grip, get a smarter, catch a clue
The blues and twos, aren’t looking out for you
Get a grip, a non starter, catch a clue
The truths elude, the ever scrolling news
Get to grips, take a moment, catch a clue
It’s up to you, exactly what you choose
Have a think, lightbulb moment, catch a clue
Excuse, then cruise, views are all eschewed
Get the pip, seed the planter, catch a clue
Confused, bemused, become your own guru
Get the trip, get enlightened, catch a clue
The clues, you choose, who with you say ‘I do’
Something old, something borrowed, something blue
Defuse, the ruse, that’s been pulling over you
Get a grip, take your moment, catch a clue

Isle of Avalon - Cosmic Bos

Nick and Andy made 12 songs for their Album in a month Album, the catalyst for the albums theme was Glastonbury, in particular Glastonbury Tor, the ancient ruins at the top of a hill, which may or may not have the Holy Grail stored in, protected by Fairies.

When we took up the challenge, I (Andy) was in Glastonbury with family, for a medieval festival at Glastonbury Abbey. We were staying at the base of the Tor, so I got the venture up it multiple times, hence capturing both a sunrise and a sunset from the magical hill. Both of these are featured in the video, along with Nick and I (Andy) recording all the music.

So excited to share the whole album with you all very, very, soon.

Peace and infinite love

Cosmic Bos have offered up their podcasting space to present the Singles playlist in full, all 26 artists that submitted Singles from their Albums/EP's made in May.

From the Lights and Lines playlist:

Singles submitted as part of the Lights And Lines Album Writing Club. Independent artists from around the world signed up to write an album or an EP each in 1 month.

Each artist was also given the option to submit a single for one of the prizes which would be put to the public to vote on a favourite! Listen to the playlist and vote for your favourite here: VOTING FORM

Please don't judge anyone's work based on recording quality - We did not ask artists to master their projects for final release due to time restraints! Instead think about things like songwriting, instrumentation, creativity, and how it makes you feel 😀

The singles are ordered by date of submission, and amazingly there are lots of lovely accidental runs where tracks next to each other work really well together, forming sections and moods in the playlist that we probably couldn't have planned if we tried!

When you've voted why not share the playlist and ask some friends to do the same.

Well done to everyone who completed the challenge - you are awesome!

Soundcloud Playlist link

Here is the full list of artist and song -

  1. Trench Gun - Bayonet Ballet

To accompany our most recent podcast episode 'Making of an Album Episode 3: Alternative Writing Techniques' we decided to throw together a song using our new improv squared method of song construction.
The song we put together was this one, 'The More You Learn, The Less You Know'.

https://cosmicbos.libsyn.com - check out our podcast, even though this very thing you are reading is the podcast, please subscribe.

Nick and Andy improvised a 3 minute dirty track, then they layered over the top of it with another improv. Then the track was bounced and Andy went away and wrote some lyrics to go with it (see below for full lyrics). The boys then recorded the vocals, Nick mixed and mastered the track, and Tada! full song made in a couple of sessions.

The video was done in a similar fashion, we had recorded ourselves making the song, so all we did was just overlay it all over itself, pretty weird but quite effective we thought.

Please like, share and subscribe
And comment, tell us what you thought

#Improv #improvsquared #podcast #newmusic #music

As promised earlier, here are the full lyrics

THE MORE YOU LEARN, THE LESS YOU KNOW by Andy Jackson

From the pedestal, always poised to fall
Dust off, trust cost cuts take it all
Down the drain, round the bend in a fuddle
Bruised and beaten and in need of a cuddle
Spell checking out the witch, stitch in time
On the line served straight up with a lime
Hit the cooks books for a fresher look
Let the knowledge marinade into every nook

Life sets the test, we have a go
The more you learn, the less you know
Since we exist, let’s try to grow
The more you learn, the less you know
It’s ups and downs, a wild show
The more you learn, the less you know
The more you learn, the less you know

Nurse the purse string theory nothings happening
Waste resources reinforces this recycling
No certainty on survival guaranteed
Malnutrition breeds servants to the corporate greed

Life is the test, let’s have a go
The more you learn, the less you know
No one knows best, it’s afterglow
The more you learn, the less you know
Through ups and downs we live the show
The more you learn, the less you know
The more you learn, the less you know

Stacking A grades while the memory fades
Got stats but the facts always misbehave
Plot points got this map in a muddle
So confused now I’m in need of a cuddle

We passed the test, we’re good to go
The more you learn, the less you know
Place the bets, go with the flow
The more you learn, the less you know
Get Joel and Mike, call Tom and Crow
The more you riff , the less you groan
Fight or flight, or toe to toe
The more you learn, the less you know
The more you learn, the less you know
The more you learn, the less you know

Welcome to Episode 3 of our Making of an Album series

For this episode, Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) take you through a selection of alternative writing techniques, discussing The Beatles contribution to the world of songwriting, in particular their later more experimental work, to the general explosion of alternative techniques of music creation that came about in the 1960's.

After that, Cosmic Bos turn their attention to their own writing techniques, breaking down the improvisation process, following the trajectory of 'Rainbow Appearing', a song improvised last year in the 3rd full improvisation session (Summadelica), through to it's development for live performance and preparing the song to be an album contender.

After improvisation comes improv-revisation, the basis of the first two seasons of Cosmic Bos Improv Music Podcast, where the music was improvised and then revised in the edit. The boys discuss this and play an example song 'Hold Me in Slow Motion'.

After Improv-revisation comes Improv Squared, Cosmic Bos's current alternative writing technique, essentially a mash up of improvisation and improv-revisation. Nick and Andy talk you through this with an example song 'Badder Decisions' from their Improv Squared album - Petit Champignon de Lumiere

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/improv-squared-petite-champignon-de-lumiere

To conclude the episode, Nick and Andy put together a brand new improv squared song called 'The More You Learn, The Less You Know', a video for which is available.

The Instrumental version of 'The More You Learn, The Less You Know' will be available on bandcamp for you to come up with you own vocals to if you so please.

Cosmic Bos presents 'Sir, France is 'cross the Sea, See'

Music by Nick and Andy Jackson

Lyrics by Andy Jackson and Google Translate

So we had this song, where it is half in French and half in English, and it's pretty silly, but also educational in some sense, and as fans of the Euro experiment (please don't Boo!) and in particular the melting pot of ideas and life approaches that it welcomed, we wanted to make a video that honoured the fine culture and history of France, and more accurately, the unfair way that British people judge the French. We approached a good friend, Dean, and asked him to translate the lyrics into sign language, which he did amazingly. So now what we have is a Eurotrash inspired music video with a 'find the baby' game, a language lesson and a sign language lesson, all rolled up into one musical joint.

Cosmic Bos present to you Improv Squared: Petite Champignon de Lumiere

Andy and Nick oversee the journey through the improvised (and then re-improvised) lands, with special guests : Joe Philogene (tracks 1,7 & 10), Dayne Howcroft (tracks 2 & 11), Chris Mace (tracks 5 & 6), Donny Stax (track 8), Ram Dass (track 10) and the Cosmic Bos Family Choir (track 1).

Tracklist:

  1. Champignon, Lumiere
  2. Faded Memories
  3. Astral Underwear
  4. Sir, France is 'cross the Sea, See
  5. Vaccine
  6. Back is Back
  7. Badder Decisions
  8. Magic Fun Guy
  9. Ensemble Story
  10. Talking Frog
  11. Forever Bruised

So what the heck is improv squared?

Well, it's where we improvise a bit of music, and then improvise over that, and then improv over it again. Sometimes we use pre-written lyrics as with Faded Memories (with lyrics by Dayne Howcroft), sometimes we write the lyrics later to go with the music (ala Back is Back), and other sometimes we work directly with an artist in co-creating the squared improv (ala Magic Fun Guy with Donny Stax). It's a wonderful new fun way to make music, and we want to share it with you.

If you are a musician or singer, or writer, and you would like to get involved with the Improv Squared shenanigans then please email us at cosmicbos@gmail.com and we can begin the musical merging process.

Welcome to Episode 2 of our Making of an Album series

This episode is about writing, in particular, traditional forms of song writing, examining the songwriting process from the angle of songwriters.

Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) collectively have several hundred songs to their names, and here they breakdown the fundamentals of songwriting, examining structure and form, before writing a song in front of your very ears.

Visited several times throughout the episode, Nick and Andy sat over two sessions and wrote a song from start to finish. Here we try to show you the creative process in its raw state.

Nick and Andy also talk about the history of songwriting, as well as their own personal histories of songwriting, including several examples from their songbooks.

The first proper song you hear in this episode is Astral Underwear, a song that Cosmic Bos created using their new musical construction method, Improv Squared (More on this in the next episode).

In the middle of the episode you are treated to two songs from Andy and Nicks songbooks.

Love Defined is by Andy Jackson and is about his wife

Spontaneous Plan is by Nick Jackson and is about his wife

Both songs are available on Cosmic Bos From the Songbook (2020)

Email cosmicbos@gmail.com with your favourite wife

The episode concludes with our other double A side single 'Forever Bruised', which is acoustically written music by Andy and Nick over a haunting poem by Dayne Howcroft

Astral Underwear - Cosmic Bos

From the upcoming album

Improv Squared - Petit Champignon de Lumiere

Andy and Nick created this song using improvisation layering, the beat, bass and synth were played in first round, then vocals and more synth, then backing vocals. Filming each round, the video was made by boxing up the performance and overlaying some stock footage.

The lyric was prewritten by Andy in the Book of Songs (or BoS as we call it) and it reads a little something like this...

ASTRAL UNDERWEAR

Sitting still, at a desk, with a tie flopped on my chest
Counting seconds, lunchtime beacons, need the valuable rest
It’s hard on the knees, with legs lazy as these
Every movement, needs improvement, I won’t pass the test

But who cares?
The outside world is cruel and unfair
They stare
But no-one can see my astral underwear
I’m here
And simultaneously everywhere
I’m this
And everything else in between

Sit around, from sat to seated, shower, bed, repeat repeated
Counting days, rest is coming, long time been defeated
It’s hard on the head, cycling, work, home, bed
These energy levels are vastly depleted
Oh these energy levels are vastly depleted

But who cares?
The social world is cruel and unfair
Don’t share
Your invincible astral underwear
You’re here
Whilst simultaneously everywhere
Your you
And everything you ever want to do

While in astral clothing
Banish self loathing
Become anything you desire

Guarantee it will suit you
From flower to cashew
Be seagull, be water, be fire

Be anything you can desire
Be anything you can desire

Ensemble Story - Cosmic Bos

Written and recorded by Andy and Nick Jackson

This song was one of the very first experiments in improv(squared) music creation. By improvising a 4 minute sound bed, Cosmic Bos layered on Guitar and Synth, followed by Bass and Vocal, and finally Backing Vocals, to create their 'Ensemble Story'.

Nick and Andy filmed themselves doing this, and that is what you are seeing in the video. Pure visual representation of music creation.

The lyrics were prewritten by Andy, and they go a little something like this:

ENSEMBLE STORY

The weekend brings new music
Old music repackaged
Sounds remixed and reimagined
Sampled sounds of someone banging

Sun will shine some of the time
Under stars from galactic prime
Transitory won’t need glory
Existence is an ensemble story

The moon shows on a cycle
Orbits to plot changes by
Dreams remixed and reimagined
Cold truth leaves us somewhat damaged

Sun won’t shine all of the time
Over these hazy hopes of mine
Mandatory loss of glory
Life is an ensemble story

Sit in meditative contemplation
Calmly size up our situation
For all is dust once said and done
Infinite shards of only one

Sun would shine all of the time
Resistance is our only crime
Momentary mandatory
Part of this ensemble story

How does one make an album?

That is the question at the heart of this special podcast presentation, and Nick & Andy from Cosmic Bos are going to break it down for you, from writing the songs, to demo stage, full recording and producing, before tackling making music videos and finally releasing the finished album.

It will hopefully be a wonderful experience for all, and we shall learn along the journey together.

What qualifies you to be doing this Making of an Album series? I've never heard of you!

A fine question indeed, and true, that Cosmic Bos is not exactly a well known musical outfit, but in our defence, we have been making music for a long time, with over 20 albums of improvised/revised music available and several other proper albums sprinkled through our past.

Cosmic Bos came into existence back in 2016, and we released our debut album '7 Billion' in 2017, which has been followed by 3 Seasons of Improvised music podcasting.

In 2021 Cosmic Bos released 'Virtual Normality' EP, a 5 track proper record, that was designed as the taster for this very Album of a Making podcast project.

All music featured in this podcast was made by Cosmic Bos and is available to hear, or if you can afford it, buy, at all good online musical stores.

Tracklist for Episode 1 : Introduction

  1. Faded Memories
  2. Take it Easier (from 'Virtual Normality' EP)
  3. Ride Another Wave (from 'Virtual Normality' EP)
  4. Where the Warp-zones Are (from '7 Billion')
  5. Let's Go Dancing (from 'Ep.14: Utopia in a Cornucopia')
  6. Ensemble Story

Both Faded Memories & Ensemble Story come from our upcoming new Improv2 album and are both available now.

Check out the videos for them in our podcast feed and on our youtube (or instagram if that's your thang)

Faded Memories - Cosmic Bos

Music by Andy & Nick Jackson

Lyrics and Artwork by Dayne Howcroft

This is our first single from our upcoming album project Improv2, this is the double A side with 'Ensemble Story' which will be in the podcast feed ahead of the first episode of our Season 4 special presentation 'Making of an Album'.

Starting 2022 off with a funky banger, 'Faded Memories' was a poem that Dayne gave to Cosmic Bos to add music to, and it worked a treat.

Special thanks to Dayne Howcroft for being awesome.

And have a wonderful day being human

Take it Easier - Cosmic Bos

From the EP Virtual Normality

Available now, in fact there is a whole podcast where the Cosmic Bos brothers break down the EP and discuss at length (probably too long, but hey, it's a podcast, it's a format meant to be long) each of the 5 tracks. They talk a bit about this very video, and how Baby Theo (not even a year old at time of filming) was an absolute superstar, and it probably won't be that long before he's doing the whole thing himself. Kids today, they grow up just as fast as we did.

Happy Birthday to the legend Theodore Jackson, 1 today, and already a music video star, keep up the good growth.

If you enjoyed this little video please give us a like, a share, a subscribe, a something, please, I don't want to beg, but, it's getting to that point, so, no, I will resist, I won't beg you, you are free to do as you please.

For this special presentation, Nick and Andy sit down to discuss their EP, Virtual Normality, which they recorded over the summer of 2021 with the intention of it being their summer presentation. As is customary for Bos, it got a little delayed and finally came out on the 1st October. Not a problem though, it's not like they work to deadline or anything.

So the 5 songs of Virtual Normality all have a story around them, and this podcast explores them, as well as containing a Tea Review, discussion on what the rest of the year has in store for Cosmic Bos (hint, it's quite a bit), chatter about our upcoming gig on November 13th at the Brunswick in Hove, shout outs for New Music Saturday with Dr. Bones and Mike5, and extra special shoutouts to Texmex Shaman for providing the slick guitar work on Stay Inside.

Check him out on Spotify here Texmex Shaman on Spotify

Also, massive shout out to Gecko for the cover and back cover, he is an awesome artist and you should check him out, search iamgecko and marvel at the wondrous, the spectacular, the unbelievable art that he does.

SPACE BABIES

Flying through space
Feel no air at my waist
The pressures are gone
Freedom swims along
Imagination, Mental elevation
Whole worlds shall dissolve
New empires unfold

It’s a game, we’re just playing
It’s a laugh, we’re all staying
These dragons all need slaying
We need truth, I’m just saying

Flying through space
Like a babies first taste
No sense letting the pressure
Stop exploring together
Imaginations, create greater nations
Cooperating peacefully
Will be achieved eventually

It’s a game, we the players
It’s quite hard, entertain us
These dragons sent a slaying
Are our reason for staying

Space, need plenty of space
Babies gotta taste
For that infinite space

Andy Jackson - Electric and Acoustic Guitar, Synth and Vocals

On the 5th June 2021, Cosmic Bos met at a secret location to record the third in their fully improvised series, with a book full of pre-written lyrics and plenty of snacks. It was a wonderful afternoon of musical exploration, and here for your pleasure is the whole thing, including some of the intros and outros that usually get cut off.

The words of wisdoms for this episode where lovingly borrowed from YouTube, with Charlie Chaplin's speech being from the film The Great Dictator (1940) and available on youtube many times, with music accompanying it. Nelson Mandela's speech from his release from prison in 1990 also comes from youtube and shares far to many similarities to Chaplin's speech from 50 years before. Which leads us to Greta Thunberg from December 2019 addressing the UN on Climate Change, with echos of both Chaplin and Mandela.

So as not to feel too down and out about the state of the world and the people that patrol it, the final Words of Wisdom comes from Ram Dass, an ever reliable source of great wisdom. The full Ram Dass speech can be found on the Here and Now podcast, link to the specific episode right here.

Clearly Designed - Cosmic Bos Improvisation

Ngoni - Joe Philogene

Electric Guitar - Nick Jackson

Acoustic Guitar and Vocals - Andy Jackson

After the deep thinking soul soothing antics of Ram Dass, it is time for the smokey wisdom of Cosmic Bos, with Joe using his Hunters Harp to hold the song together, Andy and Nick help build the tapestry. At the end of our musical/visual journey we are at our most burnt out, and beautiful colourful smoke carries our almost final musical opus away, the sun sets and the day is done, after the next one (Piñata of Troy).

The entire visual presentation is available on our YouTube page (please sub us, we Lub a good Sub)

https://www.youtube.com/cosmicbos

Here are the lyrics which were written prior to the musical improv.

Clearly Designed - by Andy Jackson

Waiting out another cycle
Too many layers to this trifle
Clearly designed and built to shine
But socially easy to stifle

Wear the honour like a hat
There really is no shame in that
Clearly designed and made to shine
You’re the hipster coolest cat

Normally the normal me
Would embrace all that I can see
The signs are all designed clearly
Proving this ain’t reality

Save your memories in a chest
One day it will be all that’s left
Clearly refined preserved design
Testament to your dying breath

Normally the normal me
Gets swept up in catastrophe
Of late though I’ve designed clearly
A proclaimed self sufficiency

Systems trotted out and barely tested
Propping up the failed reinvested
A clear design fault finally been bested
Medal goes to third, the hairy chested

Normally the normal me
Gets glitched out by bad latency
On this occasion I’ll agree
To check this was designed clearly

STAYED HERE FOR THE FEELING - by Andy Jackson

Spread across the bed
While the mower’s in the shed
Gets dustier and rustier
Use paving stones instead

Lazy built an empire
And then slept through the day
Generations greatest gifts
Casually thrown away

But fun is what we came for
The feelings’ why we stayed
We’ll decimate the buffet
And likely misbehave

Yonder window sunset
Yesterday was better
Except for the pain we felt
So easy to forget her

Tomorrow could be easy
Or is that simply dreaming
Came here for the fun
But stayed here for the feeling

Today is all okay
This is time worth stealing
Came here for the fun
Stayed here for the feeling

On the 24th April 2021, Cosmic Bos met at Nicks house, and turned baby Theo's bedroom into a recording studio for the day. The result of this is the very podcast you are currently listening to or reading about in these very words.

Several of the songs, while improvised in nature, do utilise some pre-written lyrics (tracks 2,3,5,9,11 & 12) but the melodies are improvised just like the music. Reflections of our current existence, the lyric sets that were used were all created in the early hours of the morning, whilst reflecting on existence in the glow of the morning sun.

The Ram Dass samples used here are all taken from Ram Dass Here and Now podcast, which is one of our favourite podcasts ever, full of wonderful talks by Ram Dass, with thoughtful introductions by Raghu Markus

Humanity stands at a pivotal point in history, the now moment is changing so rapidly that it appears impossible to have a grasp on reality, we have all been hoodwinked and are stumbling around dazed and confused, but not to worry, for clarity comes once dust settles and calm befalls us all, for the storm can not rage forever, and hate eventually gets tired and goes to sleep for a bit.
Thank you for spending some of your time with us here at the Cosmic Blog, you are wonderful and great things will happen for you, so go get it Tiger (I am obviously assuming that the main audience base for this blog is large cat based, skewing towards Lions, Tigers, Panthers etc. as well as domesticated felines of course, this is for the cats).

Not Babylon or Rome - Cosmic Bos Improvisation

Visual meditation for you with a sunrise and a sunset merged over the original footage of Nick Jackson, Joe Philogene. and Andy Jackson when they improvised the song.

Peace be the Journey friends

NOT BABYLON OR ROME

It was fun while it lasted
Just the one more , I’m plastered
Pickled mind you take your tears home
These gardens aren’t Babylon or Rome

Escaping the rooms of your mind
Demons have gone and redesigned
Take all those failings, chain them to the railings
This isn’t Babylon or Rome

Statues of virtually anyone’s victory
Carvings itself over all of our history
Devilish details hiding in old tales
Cast down from Babylon and Rome

You’ll reach these conclusions on your own
This was never Babylon or Rome

Like Minded - Cosmic Bos Improvisation

Coming on the 1st May 2021, Cosmic Bos Improvisation - a full set of improvised music containing thought provoking lyrics and mini lectures by the wonderful Terence McKenna and Robert Anton Wilson.

Like Minded is the third song from the album, with Joe Philogene on Ngoni, Nick Jackson on Electric Guitar and Andy Jackson on Acoustic Guitar and Vocals.

Like Minded Lyrics by Andy Jackson

Be like the flow of the river, like the wind to the bee

And if that doesn't work, try being more like me

Be smart as a sweetie, avoid all hefty fees

Although paper does, money don't come from trees

Remember to always forget, Your role isn't quite over yet

Like a clerk in an office, or the girl out to sea

Lonely, if only, they could be here with me

Remember to always forget, your meal isn't quite ready yet

Like rust in the workings, or sun bleached tapestry

Forget to remember, what a memory can be

Remember to always forget, you're worth more then you'll ever get

Like radio silence on the TV, like visual radioactivity

The passive aggressions, and stark futility

Remember to always forget, somehow it all can reset

Remember to always forget, your meal still isn't ready yet

Cosmic Bos Podcast Season 3 episode 3

Andy and Nick from Cosmic Bos, sit down to discuss the career of Michael Schur, focusing mainly on the 4 TV shows on which he was a main writer and creator, following his journey from The Office: An American Workplace, to the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee, to the police precinct of Brooklyn 99 and finally ending up in The Good Place.

#TheOffice #ParksandRec #Brooklyn99 #TheGoodPlace

Cosmic Bos are from the UK, so subsequently are not quite as acquainted with Mike Schur's earlier career on Saturday Night Live, but they are big fans of the creative work being done by that extremely talented group of people. This discussion by the Bos boys is not a comprehensive study of Mikes career, more like a couple of fanboys gushing over how amazing they think he is.

Mike Schur has worked with some of the finest talent in America, from megastars like Steve Carell, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Kristen Bell and Ted Danson to super talents like Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll and Chris Pratt. Mike has been involved in some of the funniest and most heartwarming television of the last 16 years, and we just want to celebrate that and look forward to what he has next for us all.

So thanks Mike, you are a legend and we love you

Season 3 starts with a magic trick, watch as we improvise and then revise an entire album from one days jamming session. It's the same trick we have now pulled 17 times, but it's a good trick and it has a vastly different outcome every time, so, ta dah!

Anya Louisa brings a whole new dimension to the Cosmic Bos set up, and Ben Bluebird spices up the music and vocal atmosphere just lovelily, big thanks to them both.

We tackle the big questions on everyones minds, like, is magic real? do Magicians need dating apps specially designed for their illusionist needs? How should you rub your wicker bells so as not to get blisters on your fingers? All these questions and more won't be answered in this podcast, but they might get discussed, maybe. At least you have 12 improv songs with beautiful vocals by Anya to enjoy.

A Tarot Tale - Cosmic Bos

Music improvised by Chris Mace, Nick Jackson, Andy Jackson & Doug Rutter.

Revised and Mastered by Chris Mace and Nick Jackson

Video by Andy Jackson, Hand acting by Abi Jackson.

Tarot is an old thing that has been passed through time, maybe it's just a game, or maybe it's something more, tied into the very fabric of existence, guiding our fumbling mental states towards some kind of personal evolution, letting us talk to ourselves in a way we can understand, or it could just be some very pretty cards that are nice to look at and ponder.

Whatever you think of Tarot, we here at Cosmic Bos have a set of Tarot cards (Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot) and we wanted to use them in an improvised session to make a song, which is what we did, and this very video is a reenactment of the original Tarot reading (literally, like, just what it says on the cards, no deeper analysis of context or meaning) set to the revised version of the the original improvised song.

This time round there is a lot more comedy sneaking into the musical side of proceedings, this is a fun ride. Welcome to Bos Trumps,

This is the dance suit, we will have 4 other suits coming at some point, but for now, it's time to dance.

So get your dancing shoes on (everyone has special dancing shoes right?) and prepare for a jaunt and a jig as Jethro, Jeffrey and Nick play Bos Trumps.

What is Bos Trumps I hear you ask, well, it's normal trumps but with Bos songs instead of monsters or TV characters or poisonous fruits. What are Bos songs? Well, they are songs from the improv-revisation podcast made by Cosmic Bos. To date (1/10/2020) Cosmic Bos have released 15 improv(revised) albums, and the dancey songs are here in this suit of cards.

Let's Go Dancing - Cosmic Bos (Official Music Video)

Taken from Improv-Revisation Ep.14: Utopia in a Cornucopia

Music improvised by Chris Mace, Nick Jackson, Andy Jackson & Bob Duffield

Revised and Mastered by Chris Mace & Nick Jackson

Video by Nick Jackson, Andrea Jackson, Abi Jackson & Andy Jackson

Our Monty Python style animated video tells the story of getting your dancing shoes on (baby) and going out dancing, something we still technically aren't allowed to do, but at the time of recording the song it was still perfectly socially acceptable. As you can tell, we remained socially distanced to make the video, no virus was spread during the process.

This song is from Cosmic Bos Improv-Revisation podcast, it's a podcast we make, like a radio show from another dimension. We improvise all the music in a single days session, take it away, revise it a bit, get rid of the rubbish bits, tweak up and brush down, then release as an album and as a podcast.

It's fun, you should check it out, there's lots of it now too, this was from our 14th session, which had special guest Bob Duffield.

The Maja Saga music taken from Cosmic Bos Improv-Revisation podcast, Episode 11: Betting the Bottom Dollar

All music improvised, mixed and mastered by Chris Mace, Nick Jackson & Andy Jackson
Toy video made by Abigail Jackson, Andrea Jackson, Andy Jackson & Nick Jackson (that's alotttta Jackson action right there!)

So Emit has managed to capture Maja, her attempts to evade him in the Rainbow Warriors other dimensions had not been successful, and now they head back to our world so that Emit can reveal his plan...

Enjoy the exciting conclusion of our epic toy based trilogy.

https://cosmicbos.libsyn.com

The Maja Saga was an experimental trilogy of songs that the Cosmic Bos chaps made for Episode 11 of their podcast. It follows in the footsteps of the Tiny Spaceman trilogy we did back in Episode 2, but this time the focal character was Maja the tiny Swedish woman with perfect hair, and we had a rough story outline before we started.

We hope you have enjoyed our tiny Saga, and if not, then thanks for sticking around even though we clearly irritate you with our silliness. Love ya.

The star of this episode is without a shadow of a doubt, the one, the only, Mr. Joseph Philogene. With the Ngoni giving us tracks 1,3,4,7 & 10, Fingerpiano on 9, and Frame Drums on 2,5,6 & 8, the musical flavours of the improvisations are rich, thoughtful and meditative.

Joe also sang, the first guest we've had to do so, on two tracks no less.
