In today’s episode I’m going to share a simple analogy that will help you shift your perspective so you stop holding back your emotions and learn to let them flow. Life gets a lot lighter and easier when you do.

You know that old saying that was everywhere in the early 2000s?
“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
I was thinking about this as we also are in April, and that other saying, “April showers bring May flowers.”
So let’s talk about what this really can mean in our lives after miscarriage, stillbirth or any kind of babyloss. These two little sayings actually pack in a lot of truth that can help us live, laugh and love our way through life.

In March, I was able to attend the BYU Life after Loss Conference and it was so good. I took lots of notes and I’m going to break down two days full of speeches into bite sized lessons just for you.
Life after miscarriage, stillbirth or babyloss can feel lonely, and isolating. But there are so many universal truths about grief that connect all of us.
The speakers all had different stories, but what tied us all together was our love and our desire to heal. What a gift to be with other people who understood. I want to share just a bit of that spirit with you today.

Do you know why Spring Cleaning exists?
Because after a cold winter of burning wood or coal in the house, people loved to finally open the windows, let in the fresh air, and scrub off the grime that had built up.
It’s so satisfying to make your home shine again. There’s an energy that comes with deep cleaning that is a bit sweaty but so sweet.
Sometimes we let a lot of grime build up in our minds, too.
We may have experienced a long winter in our hearts or we may have just gotten used to things being grey.
In today’s episode we’re talking about deep cleaning the corners of your mind so you can start fresh with squeaky clean thoughts that shine.

It’s easy to look back and judge ourselves for things we’ve done in the past. We wonder why we chose what we did, why we did what we did, and think about what our life would be like if we’d done something differently.
Wishing we could change the past is normal, but it doesn’t help us move forward. It keeps us stuck and it causes a lot of pain. We can’t go back, but we can start today to love ourselves, not in spite of what happened, but because of it.

Part of being a human is being scared. It’s what kept us alive historically because we are not the top of the food chain. But these days when there are fewer saber-toothed tigers, we still feel a lot of fear. All this fear holds us back from living the life we truly want. After losing your baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or any other kind of loss these fears can be exacerbated. What used to be easy is now impossible.
A lot of people live by the mantra “Do it scared!” and encourage you to push through the fear. Which sometimes works but often causes harm.
In this week's episode I’m sharing my proven formula to prepare, practice, and then go for your goals while taking care of you.
You’ll learn how to lean into your limits and show yourself that you can do way more than you thought you could.

You know how sometimes your purse just starts getting really heavy and you’re not sure why? When you go to find your phone you have to dig through gum wrappers, a pair of socks (what?) and all those receipts you don’t even know why you have? All that clutter slows you down and gives you a shoulder ache.
Ya feel me?
Well the same thing happens in our brain. If we’re not paying attention, clutter builds up and every once in a while we need to dump it all out, sort through and start fresh.
Today’s episode is going to teach you how to do just that without any shame or judgment about how it got so messy in the first place.

Have you ever found yourself in conversation with someone and you’re telling them that you’re fine when on the inside you are barely holding it together? Why do we do that?
You also might not allow yourself to grieve as much once you have a rainbow baby or it’s been a while since your miscarriage, stillbirth or babyloss. There are so many ways we downplay our grief and it’s really a disservice to ourselves, the people around us and society as a whole.
On today’s episode I’m sharing why we downplay and how to start being more honest about what this life after #babyloss is really like.

While I was visiting Europe recently we went to an adventure park where children could climb in the trees attached to a harness.
I noticed so many differences between how this park operated versus how it would be in the United States.
As I observed I thought a lot about risk and how we as grievers operate when we’ve been through miscarriage, stillbirth or babyloss.
We know what it feels to fall, but what are we missing out on when we don’t want to climb anymore?

If you’re here because your friend or family member has just lost a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, failed embryo transfer, termination for medical reasons, SIDS, ectopic pregnancy or any other type of loss…Thank you. It is so important to support yourself so you can support the people you love. So often we don’t know how to approach this, what to say, what to do and you for sure don’t want to mess this up.
One of the hardest things for loss moms is the secondary losses where they feel like they lose their friends because of the gap that grief can seem to create. You can bridge that gap by following the steps I’m sharing in today’s episode.
As a bonus, I created a little message you can share with your loved one. My goal with the Smooth Stones Podcast is to help every grieving parent I can to know that there is hope and they are not alone. Just send them a text.
*Insert your own greeting then copy and paste the message below:
I just found a life after babyloss coach named Amy Watson. She has podcast called Smooth Stones. I listened to episode 130 “When Your Friend has a Miscarriage” and it helped me so much to understand how I can be there for you now and as long as you need me. I think you would love her podcast. Some episode that look really helpful are:
104-When you’ve just lost your baby
93-Faith
6-How many kids do you have?
You should check it out.
insert your personal ending. Feel free to scroll the episodes and pick out any titles that address what your loved one is currently struggling with. You can also add a link to the podcast if you’d like. On Apple you just go to the three dots at the top and then click “share show”
Thank you again for being a great support. It’s the most important thing. Hugs to you,

I used to put myself last for everything. Last to eat when the food was cold, last to sleep once everyone else was settled, last to get new clothes, last to do what I wanted to do.
It felt good in some ways to sacrifice. I got to tell myself I was a good mom and wife and human because I put my needs last.
But I started feeling really resentful, tired and unappreciated. None of that helped me be the person I wanted to be.
All of that changed when I let myself invest in myself. I hired a life coach, then I invested in becoming a life coach, then I started my own business.
I’m not going to say that everything is different. On the outside I still eat last a lot, I still stay up and make sure everyone is home safe and all the doors are locked but it all FEELS different.
All because I invested in me.
You can overcome the part of you that believes you need to sacrifice yourself for the good of everyone else.

I used to think I was just a really nice person who wanted everyone around me to be happy. I did all kinds of mental gymnastics to keep the peace and if something went wrong…whoa!
You know I had knots in my stomach and couldn’t stop thinking about it for days…maybe weeks or like, forever.
Until I realized that what I was doing was spending a lot of time worried about other people’s emotions and not figuring out what I really wanted.
If you’re a human, but especially a woman who was socialized to be “nice” it can lead to a whole lot of problems.
Listen in to hear all about people pleasing, why we do it and how to stop, especially after miscarriage stillbirth or babyloss. Grief isn't a reason to continue people pleasing.
You won’t want to miss this powerful episode.

There’s a funny thing we do to ourselves as loss parents that I’ve noticed. When parenting gets challenging, or you’re tired or frustrated or find yourself hiding in the pantry hoping to get just a few minutes to yourself….instead of just letting it be what it is, we like to add a layer of guilt on top.
Because you know what it is to lose. And you know what it is to love those living babies so fiercely it hurts. And somehow that all gets mixed up into the belief that you should be forever grateful and never have any uncomfortable emotions.
But that just isn’t true. And it only makes things harder for you.
In today’s episode, I’m going to share everything you need to know to pull yourself up and give yourself a big, tight hug on the days parenting after loss is hard.
It will be such a relief.

Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know that the people around us influence the way we think and therefore how we feel. This is even more true after loss as our emotions are more raw.
In this week’s episode, I’m sharing why this happens and what to do if you want to change the people around you.
When you surround yourself with people who support and uplift and challenge you…things start to feel possible again.
And you find out who you truly are.

In this episode you're going to learn why paying attention to our emotional energy is going to change everything.
Our world is fast paced and doesn't make room to flow with the energy, and we spend a lot of energy in places that don't actually move us forward.
But once we learn how to manage our mind and feel our feelings as well as check in with our emotional energy, life gets so much easier.

It's Black Maternal Mental Health Week!
Black mothers are much more likely to suffer a pregnancy or infant loss, and also more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth. The emotional and mental weight of these losses is heavy and ever present for Black mothers in America (and many other countries). There are many factors that influence these statistics, but the over arching truth is that it has to change. And the first step to change is awareness.
At Smooth Stones Coaching, we are here to support all our sisters who have endured loss.
I am honored to have as my guest Erica McAfee. Erica is a mom of two babies in heaven and one miracle child. She is an advocate for Black maternal mental health and grief support. She is an educator, speaker, and podcaster at Sisters in Loss, where she shares stories of loss and hope. Erica also trains birth and bereavement doulas. She is a classically trained violinist and lover of Jesus Christ.

This week it's story time! We start the episode with the beautiful life of baby Jord, and then I'm going to tell you a little about what's going on with me this week.
And the lesson in it all is that we are taught to change our circumstances to feel better, but it never works. So I'm going to tell you what to do before you change anything so that you don't bring any mental baggage with you as you move forward. It's going to be fun.

Discomfort is the currency to our dreams.
What do you think about this sentence? For most of us, we'd rather stay in our comfort zone, but if we want to do more, be more and change the world, we have to be willing to be uncomfortable.
Making that decision on purpose takes us from the discomfort of being stuck to discomfort that moves us forward. And it's possible to get really good at it.

Whether we realize it or not, we all have a relationship with our future self. In this episode we are going to talk about what that is, how to become aware of it, and then how to use our future self to reach the goals we want to achieve.

all of us have ideas about what a good mother is.
Today we are exploring why our checklists for motherhood only hurt us and how to define your own motherhood with confidence.
And how our success as a mother has nothing to do with how our kids turn out, or even if they live.

So many couples struggle in this area, whether it is being intimate the first time after loss, worries about another pregnancy or just not being on the same page in this part of their relationship. This is such an important part of life, and especially our life after a loss.

So many of us who have been through a loss can find that there are certain things that trigger big emotional reactions. We end up wanting to eat all the chocolate, crawl in bed and just cry for days. But there comes a point where that just doesn't work anymore.
In today's episode I am teaching you how to become trigger proof. What this means is you are able to look at your most common triggers and learn how to neutralize them so they don't affect you any more. I explain the steps to do this which are: Recognize, neutralize, question your story and then have confidence that you can heal and move forward no matter what you've been through.
Whether your triggers are related to your miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of your infant, these tools are going to change the way you look at what you are capable of.

In today's episode I am going to teach you about scarcity and how it affects us in our lives. You may have scarcity around money, your business, your relationships, or currently (March 2020) about toilet paper supplies.
The antidote to this mindset that keeps us small and scared and stressed is to learn to live in abundance. This is something we have to practice every day, but it changes lives.
If we believe there is enough for us, and enough for everyone else, we are going to feel a lot happier and show up so much better in our lives.

Today we are talking about Manuals, the unwritten rules that we have about the people in our lives. We want them to follow these rules so that we can feel how we want to feel.
Unfortunately it doesn't, work, because...humans are terrible at doing what we think they should!
We're going to discuss what manuals are, give some examples and answer some common questions.
Recognizing and dropping these manuals is some of the best work you can do for you and your relationships.

If you are a human, you need to listen to this one.

No matter when your loss was, you probably have at least a few things for your baby.
Some of us had a lot of things.
It can be emotional trying to decide what to do with them, and then even more so when we actually try to do it.
I've been decluttering in the new year, and I wanted to share a bit of my story and some things I have learned in the last 7 years.
We also talk about managing your mind around these baby items.
You can do this, momma.

Today I give you step by step directions on how to crush the goals you have made.
Create a measurable, specific result that you want to achieve.
Use the model to identify the actions, feeling and thought you will need to accomplish that goal.
Break the actions into specific "do goals"
Identify obstacles that will come up for you
Create strategies to overcome those obstacles.
Put each step on your schedule.
keep your commitments
It won't always be easy, but that's ok. Any good goal will stretch you. Stick with it! Let me know ho wit goes.

We are in the season of setting goals as we head into 2020, but a lot of us set them from a place of dissatisfaction with ourselves and our lives.
Today we are talking about switching that around and loving ourselves first, and then finding better reasons to set goals.
We talk a bit about Mister Rogers and his influence, especially when it comes to being kind and liking people the way they are, especially ourselves.
I hope you enjoy!

Today we have a special guest, Krista St-Germain. She is a life coach and expert on grief and post traumatic growth. She works with widowed moms and I am so honored she stopped by to share her wisdom with us.
Regret is something that is very common in grief. Today we talk about the difference between guilt and regret and how to recognize them when they show up.
Krista teaches us how to deal with regret, first by allowing it,
then identifying the thoughts that are causing it,
deciding if they are useful to us,
and then choosing intentionally what we want to think.
She reassures us that regret is normal and not a problem and then explains that if we can believe it's possible that you can find some peace if that is what you want.

Today's episode explains why it is so important to feel our feelings. Feelings are what drive us to do anything we do, and we also avoid many things because of how we think they will make us feel.
Learning how to allow emotion gives us so much power over our lives.
I'm going to teach you a few ways to really allow the emotions, positive and negative, that arise.

So many of us find that we are avoiding our negative emotions by buffering. Buffering is eating, drinking, shopping, scrolling or anything we do to distract ourselves from what is really happening inside of us. There is always a negative consequence to these behaviors.
To be able to change this and really live an authentic life, we have to recognize it and then choose to stop. When we stop, all the negative emotions will still be there, but we will be ready for them. We are strong. We are confident. We can live our best lives.

Today I am teaching you the main tool we use in coaching, The Model.
It is so simple yet so powerful.
Here is the Model:
Circumstance (neutral fact)
Thought (one thought you have about the Circumstance
Feeling (a one word emotion that the thought creates)
Action ( what do you do or not do when you are feeling this emotion )
Result (what is the result of these actions, will always tie back to the original thought)
Common model probelms:
Not getting the circumstance completely neutral-no adjectives or opinions!
Too many thoughts-just pick one!
A thought that is a question- answer it and put that in your model.
Feeling is a thought-just choose a one word emotion
Action-be careful to keep the action tied to your feeling in this specific circumstance. How are you showing up?
Result is not about you-result is ALWAYS your result.
