My guest today is Ryan Kalamaya who is the managing partner at the Kalamaya Goscha Law Firm based across the state of Colorado, with Ryan being the lucky one based in in the mountains of Aspen.
The Kalaymaya Goscha firm covers a wide breadth of matters including personal injury, criminal defense, wrongful death, car accidents, and even ski & snowboard accidents, (which is definitely a geographic specialty) but they have specific focus on family law and divorce incidents.
In fact, they’re known as the “tech divorce lawyers” and record a podcast focusing on a wide variety of issues related to divorce called Divorce at Altitude: A Podcast on Colorado Family Law.

My guest today is Catherine Sanders Reach who is the Director of the Center for Practice Management at the North Carolina Bar Association. You may not recognize Catherine’s name immediately, but if you’ve sat through a technology-related CLE conference or session in the past 10 years, there is a very good chance you’ve benefitted from Catherine’s expertise and practical training.
I first connected with Catherine back in the early 2000’s when she was the Director of the Legal Technology Resource Center at the ABA. Then she moved to the Chicago Bar Association where we worked together several times.
Catherine has also served on several Planning Boards for the annual ABA TECHSHOW Conference, including my Board in 2015, and then she led her OWN Planning Board in 2020! (which was the last in-person event I attended before the world imploded, and it was a GREAT event!)

I’ve been a big fan of LawStack for many years because the app has first of all replaced a lot of legal books that I used to keep on my shelf like all good lawyers. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Bill for many years now and followed his work at ExhibitView which offers the impressive ExhibitView Trial Presenter software. This is the software for PC that lets you create “callouts” from documents on-the-fly that you’re showing on a projector or TV screen. You can also highlight text and annotate the document you’re displaying.
But Bill and his team also recognized the power of the iPad early on, and developed the iTrial app, which lets you do a lot of the same callouts and annotations from the iPad! In fact, I just released a video review of the iTrial app on my site www.appsinlaw.com.

My guest today is attorney Alan Fanger who has served the greater Boston area for over 30 years in will contests, probate & trust disputes, real estate & contractor disputes, and a variety of consumer issues.
I’ve run into Alan through several conferences and seminars, and have always been fascinated with his background as a legal sports analyst, and the way he uses video effectively.

Shortly after that episode, I received a lovely email from Judge Robertson explaining how HE uses the iPad and various apps in the cases that HE sees on a daily basis, and I was so interested in what he was sharing that I invited him on the podcast.
We had to get some special clearance and allowances, but it was all worth it and I’m thrilled that Judge Robertson was able to join me for this podcast.

My guest today is Ian Lyngklip from the Lyngklip & Associates Consumer Law Center, PLC up in Southfield Michigan, just northwest of Detroit. I’ve been fortunate to cross paths with Ian at a few conferences and meetings, (most recently at the ABA TECHSHOW) and he is a remarkable individual that uses technology in some fascinating ways to manage and streamline his burgeoning and fast-paced practice.
In his over 20 years of practice, Ian and his team have represented identity theft victims and other consumers and has become one of Michigan’s leading consumer protection firms. Ian is a nationally recognized speaker on credit reporting, debt collection and auto financing issues, and has spoken numerous times for the FTC, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and trained at the Michigan Poverty Law Center.
Not only does Ian utilize technology to confidently keep track of what exactly is happening in each matter, but he is able to keep metrics of all his different matters so he has a good idea of what a case is worth, how long it will take, etc.

Stephanie’s Logistical Tip #1: Have a plan with articulable (and articulated!) expectations for everyone
- 20% of today is a good tomorrow.
- Momentum matters—if it’s not helping you, chuck it or change it.
- Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit ... wisdom is knowing that tomatoes don’t belong in a fruit salad.
Brett’s Techie Tip #1: Tips for Remote Meetings (Zoom, GoToMeeting, Google Hangouts, etc.)
- Prop your laptop up so that folks are not looking up your NOSE!
- Good lighting is so important! Natural light from windows is best!
- Know where the MUTE button is located!
- In Zoom, you can actually press and hold the space bar for a "push-to-talk" while you are muted!
- Craig Ball's Zoom cheat-sheet
- You can SHARE YOUR SCREEN! Great way to collaborate on documents before they are final! MUCH better than emailing versions and drafts back and forth.
Stephanie’s Logistical Tip #2: Structure, Anchors, And Boundaries Help Everyone
- Structure: Firm, but flexible. Have “Start” and “End” windows.
- Anchors: Start the day with a family meeting to go over the agenda. Be intentional about meals and breaks. Have a “Quiet Time” for the kids so they miss each other for a while.
- Boundaries: Have a dedicated workspace and put things away. Change clothes to signal the start and end point of every day. Never interrupt a person who is in “the zone.”
Brett’s Techie Tip #2: Know how to use a VPN - a "Virtual Private Network"
- Know WHEN to use a VPN – when you’re connected to an open, public, wireless network and need to send a private, confidential, sensitive email.
- If you've NEVER used a VPN before, there are many to choose from but my best recommendation is to look at one called Tunnel Bear. It’s cute and memorable, and free to use up to 500MB a month. That’s plenty of data to get yourself familiar with how it works.
- Download the app to your iPhone and iPad and next time you connect to an open, public wifi, and BEFORE you send that confidential email, open the app and turn it on. You'll see a little bear dig a tunnel and it will be turned on.
Stephanie’s Logistical Tip #3: Everyone Has Responsibilities, Chores, And Pulls Weight
- Responsibilities are specific to the individual’s development
- Chores are household tasks that get done for everyone’s benefit
- Pulling weight is doing these things to the best of your ability
- Webinars, conference calls, and such are a group effort (reduce noise like putting the dog in their cage, doing quiet work, don’t hog the bandwidth)
Brett’s Techie Tip #3: Your Phone or iPad Hotspot
- Many of you know that your Phone can act as a wireless hotspot!
- For iPhones & iPads:
- Go into Settings and towards the top you’ll see “Personal Hotspot” if your phone or iPad supports that
- By default this is OFF and you should ALWAYS turn it OFF unless you’re using it because it can drain your data plan!
- Change the Wi-Fi Password so that it’s something unique to you!
Stephanie’s Logistical Tip #4: Balance ⚖️ 🧘♀️
- Self-discipline is a skill; allow everyone the opportunity to flub in terms of productivity. It takes a lot of self-discipline to stay productive without bosses, colleagues, meetings, teachers, and grades.
- Accept that roles will become more fluid, and that you will sometimes catch yourself wearing the wrong hat.
- Occasionally chuck the whole thing and do whatever you want. It WILL be okay.
Brett’s Techie Tip #4: Nextdoor www.nextdoor.com
- Virtual neighborhood "hub" – kind of like a hyper-localized Facebook for your neighborhood.
- For iOS and Android
PulsePoint www.pulsepoint.org
- It's connected in to your local 911 service, and local Fire/EMS agencies, so when a call goes in for cardiac arrest, local people that know CPR can be notified so they can help, but the app can generally alert you about ANY medical or fire emergency in your area
Stephanie’s Logistical Tip #5: Keep The Conversation Going
- The worst-case scenario is that you change your mind—you can even change it back!
- Have a thicker skin for the impatience and criticism of those who love you most.
- Given a sufficient amount of time, boredom will cultivate inventiveness and transform itself into imagination.
- Remember that this will all be a story told to your great-grandchildren. What do you want them to remember about you?

My guest today is Judge Joseph Adams (Twitter @adamsadamo8), who is the President Judge at the Court of Common Pleas in York, Pennsylvania (that’s about 30 mins south of Harrisburg).
I had the good fortune of sitting next to Judge Adams at a dinner a few weeks ago at the ABA TECHSHOW 2019 in Chicago, and we immediately started nerding out on Macs and iPads, and other Apple products, and I was thoroughly impressed to learn about the variety of different apps that he uses in his courtroom.
Judge Adams graduated from the same law school that I attended in Dayton, OH, and served as a Senior Deputy Prosecutor in the York County District Attorney’s office before being elected to the county’s Court of Common Pleas.
Judge Adams was also the presiding judge at the “Galactic Empire v. Han Solo” trial … which was a CLE put on by the York County Bar Association, which involved our mutual friend Evan Kline (www.40tech.com).
In this podcast episode, Judge Adams diligently explains exactly how he manages his courtroom and proceedings from his iPad using a variety of apps and services. It really is a look into how easy it is to run courtrooms efficiently with a minimum amount of technology.

My guest today is Heidi Alexander, who is the Deputy Director of the Massachusetts Group Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (or LCL). This is such a commendable group since their mission is to confidentially promote well-being and resilience in the legal community.
In her role at the LCL, Heidi also leads the Law Office Management Assistance Program that we usually shorten to LOMAP, and since she’s in Massachusetts, we just usually say MassLOMAP.
And the purpose of LOMAP is to help attorneys, or soon-to-be attorneys, implement professional office practices and procedures, through the site’s wealth of resources on technology, workflows, and consulting services.
Heidi also serves on the ABA TECHSHOW Planning Board, and was gracious enough to invite me to present on Macs in Law at this year’s conference, which is where I also heard HER presentations and HER wonderful infatuation with Apple products … I just had to invite her on the podcast.
Oh … and she also wrote a book on Evernote for the ABA called “Evernote as a Practice Tool” which is fantastic.

My guest today is Howard Lenow, partner at Lenow & McCarthy in Wayland, Masschusetts. Howard has been a union side labor lawyer for 38 years and is referred by his clients as a “pitbull with a sense of humor!
Howard is what I would call one of the godfathers of Mac-using lawyers, since he’s been using Macs since 1984 waaaaaaay before many of us even considered using Macs, AND when it was extremely difficult to collaborate with others who were all using Windows!
Howard has tirelessly been teaching unions and lawyers how to use Macs and iPads at national ABA conferences, Massachusetts State Bar groups, the National Employment Lawyers Association, and many other professional organizations.

I had the honor of speaking at a legal tech conference for the South Carolina Bar Association in Columbia, and Mike was so generous and kind to come up, shake my hand, and tell me how much he enjoyed the Apps in Law podcast … which meant, of course, that I had to invite him to be a guest.
Mike’s practice there in Columbia focuses on probate administration and litigation, estate planning for individuals, and does some bankruptcy work as well.

My guest today is Robin Meadow, who is a partner at Greines, Martin, Stein & Richland LLP, an appellate law firm in Los Angeles.
Robin handles all kinds of appeals at the firm, but has a focus on business disputes, real estate, partnerships, probate and entertainment law.
I think it would be safe to say that Robin is a technologist at heart, having been a pioneer in the use of electronic records and e-briefs, and co-authored the California Second District Court of Appeal’s first protocol for electronic briefs (since adopted by other California Courts of Appeal).
He’s also the author of a chapter on technology for appellate lawyers, published in the Law Journal Press Appellate Practice in Federal & State Courts guide.

My guest today is Patrick “PJ” Best who is an attorney at ARM Lawyers based in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The firm may possibly have the best tagline of any law firm I’ve heard: ARM Lawyers – the Strong ARM of the Law!

My guest today is Neil Squillante who is the publisher of the outstanding TechnoLawyer collection of FREE newsletters including TechnoRelease, LitigationWorld, BiglawWorld, SmallLaw, and several more.
Neil started writing TechnoLawyer as a hobby in 1997. I started law school in 1997 and I remember receiving some of those very first text-only newsletters since it was one of the ONLY publication that was focused on how technology was being used in the practice of law.
Before TechnoLawyer became a full-time job for Neil in 1999, he practiced at Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York City where he mostly focused on commercial litigation.

My guest today is Ernie Svenson, aka “Ernie the Attorney” who started a legal blog (blawg) by that name many years ago, before many of us even knew what “blogging” was!
