The second premier of Alberta came to the post after a scandal brought down the previous premier. Ray Hnatyshyn was the son of the first Ukrainian-born Senator in Canadian history. After a career in politics, Hnatyshyn made history himself as the first Governor General of Ukrainian-descent. As Governor General, he was known for his friendly and humorous personality and he would open the doors to Rideau Hall and help make the position of Governor General more accessible to Canadians.

Jeanne Sauve was a woman of firsts. The first Quebec woman to have a federal cabinet post, the first female Speaker of the House and the first female Governor General, she broke barriers throughout her life and overall was well-loved as Governor General. There would be hiccups along the way, but her impact on Canada cannot be understated.

After a long and distinguished career as a diplomat, Jules Leger came into the role as Governor General with promise. Sadly, a stroke only six months into his term severely limited his abilities for the rest of his term. If not for his wife, it is unlikely he would have continued on for the entire length of his term.

John Buchan took a unique path towards being Governor General. A commoner who is credited with inventing the spy thriller literary genre, he would be appointed to the peerage so he could serve as the Governor General. As Governor General, he travelled more than any other viceroy before him, promoted the literary art and, sadly, became the first Governor General to die in office.

As Governor General from 1898 to 1904, Minto enjoyed political stability in Canada. His life in Canada actually dated back to 1885 when he served during the NW Resistance. During his time as vice-regal, he would promote Canadian heritage, visit the Klondike and do much more.

A former Toronto city councilor, Jack Layton would become the leader of the federal NDP in 2003. In every subsequent election, he helped the party gain more seats until it became the Official Opposition in 2011. Sadly, he would die only months later from cancer. He remains one of the most popular politicians in recent memory.

A veteran of provincial politics, Michel Gauthier joined the wave of Bloc Quebecois who were elected into Parliament in 1993. By 1996, he was the leader of the party and the leader of the Official Opposition but only stayed in for a year.

Starting out as an ambassador, then a cabinet minister, Lucien Bouchard's falling out with his friend Brian Mulroney would result in the creation of the Bloc Quebecois. The brother of actor Leslie Nielsen, Erik had quite the life of his own. For 30 years, from 1957 to 1987, he served under three Prime Ministers as a Member of Parliament and was the Leader of the Official Opposition for a few months in 1983.
After he left Parliament, the man known as Velcro Lips, wrote a tell-all book that set the standard for brutal honesty in political autobiographies.
