Mary In The Junkyard Albums too. AND a new single and tour from Soak. Class single from girlfriend. also. You’re spoilt rotten, so you are.
There’s a lot going on here and there’s not time to unpack it all. Dive in. Enjoy. Have a lovely weekend.
Finally, after 6 years, got to get Dark Tropics to Galway for show. Rio loves Chet Baker, so you’re in for a treat. Gilla Band are back with a new single, and so are The Mary Wallopers. Shark School have a new single, an album at the end of the month and upcoming live shows including Beyond The Pale and Femme Fest at Róisín Dubh. Catch Sprints for two shows at Róisín Dubh in July! Æ Mak’s new album is out! And check out Paddy Hanna’s new single, a cover of Burt Bacharach’s Walk On By, ahead of the debut performance of Paddy Hanna’s Bacharach show at Beyond The Pale.
Swapmeet both release single #3 from their forthcoming albums. Check out the incredible new single from Morgana - who you really have to see live. Car Seat Headrest revisit and reimagine Teens Of Denial. Nearly time for the Vicar St show from Aldous Harding. Is there a new Blondshell album on the way? I mean, probably, right? Finally saw Modern Woman live and they were great. So is the album. Don’t miss the live dates for Dark Tropics happening soon. Arab Strap are 30 years at it, and there’s a new single, album and live dates so get on that. Had to throw in some Two-Man Giant Squid and Rua Rí also - because they’re class. Best boys Getdown Services’ new single is out now, album in August, and while it’s great they are playing Vicar St, we will miss them in Galway. But go see them for sure.
Some times, the stars align. Some times, Burglar’s favourite song is also your favourite song by The Goon Sax. Some band. Also, Burglar have a new single. So do For Nina. And they are both playing in the Grand Social on 16 April (followed by Nialler9) - you should definitely go to that even though it’s not in Galway. Lads. WU LYF have a NEW album. Only took 15 years. It’s better the first one too, which is a bonus. Can’t tell you enough how great Rua RÍ is - the album is nearly out but Makeover is now a single and it’s the one he played with Kean Kavanagh in December that blew our minds totally. Also, new single from NewDad with Liam McKay from Sign Crushes Motorist / Dead Calm / etc etc etc - they are self releasing and it feels so good. Have you checked out Birding, the debut album from London three piece deary? It’s on Bella Union, which means you should probably just buy it anyway. Also, it’s great. While I have you - go buy Ships by Seamus Fogarty. Just because it’s amazing.
This week - Telekura’s BEST INTERVIEW EVER (Takeaway - the Róisín is class)!!!! Check out the Daniel Avery remix of Just Mustard. Will Sheff is back with his second solo album on the way. Goodtime John has a new album, and a new video dedicated to the one and only Glenn Keating. Waxahatchee join the gang doing covers of This Is Loreli. Nearly time for the Kean Kavanagh produced Rua Rí album! And Modern Woman too. Theatre have also FINALLY released a single, and an EP on the way. Also, Body Type are back and so is Pádraig Cooney. Good time.
Metric in September. Also, always great to play Stars. Death Cab For Cutie also back with a new album on the way and a September show in Dublin. Goldbug announces debut album Swings And Roundabouts is on the way next month. Dark Tropics have announced a tour and new music on the way, but let’s revisit last year’s single because it’s great. Dose - single, tour, EP on the way - what more could you want? The Afghan Whigs also drop a new single and Kneecap have a collab with the awesome Kae Tempest ahead of the album next week. Have a great weekend
Belfast in June). Can’t get enough of the Rua Rí album. So good. Also, that Waxahatcee cover of This Is Lorelei just keeps getting better.
Here's Strange Brew #415 Eat Quiche, Sleep, Repeat (02/05/25) Coming to you this week from a hotel room in Wrexham where I’m watching some amazing bands at Focus Wales - you can hear some of them too RIGHT HERE. Also, let’s dip a toe into the line up for the Galway International Arts Festival. And Joshua Burnside on new music, picking up other people’s pints (!) and his favourite Adrianne Lenker song.
Strange Brew #413 Still Tryin' (11/04/25)Does it ever stop, like? Chatting with Yoni Wolf this week - can’t stop picturing him sitting beside Brian Eno, copying his homework - also, Paddy Hanna’s superb new album, Oylegate is out, so you’re going to want to get all over that. I did not expect to be playing some DJ Koze, but he’s only gone and released a track with Markus Archer from The Notwist, which also samples Consequence from Neon Golden, so yeah, let’s have a go of that. Other stuff too. It’s all good.
Here's Strange Brew #412 Turn Me Down (04/04/25) - The Vaselines tell me about their favourite song, and, like, it was very easy to misunderstand what Eugene said, so I thought it was a band called The Throws, whom I’d never heard of and may or may not exist. It wasn’t. It was The Thrills. We figured it out after. Good save. Frances chose a fantastic track by Pictish Trail. Also, some class new music. Wu Lyf are back and I’m still pronouncing it wrong. Anyway, have a great weekend.
Anna B Savage gets put on the spot and has to pick her favourite Nick Drake song (don’t worry, it’s a good one). That WHY? concert I’ve been banging on about is finally here so try not to explode with excitemnent. Joan As Police Woman is nearly here too - get tickets for that! Also, Modest Mouse and The Flaming Lips touring together. Holy Shit. Can’t go. Crap. Oh well, at least we have the Yoshimi gig in April to look forward to! Also, it’s the 411th show so gonna have to play that Shark School song, right?Listen in on 8radio.com - Fridays 9-10, Saturdays 7-8 - via the app or listen back with link in bio
Here's Strange Brew #409 Limelight (14/03/25) It’s always a pleasure to talk to Daithí - find out EVERYTHING about him this week, but mainly focusing on his upcoming releases, and Seance Of Light by Jape. Have you heard the new Paddy Hanna single, Harry Dean? Check that out and get tickets for the Whelan’s show on 17 April. Also, pre-order the album. Alopecia by Why? turned 17 this week, so I’ll never miss a chance to celebrate an Alopecia anniversary. Also, get tickets for the Why? show on 28 March. Loads of good music also, and find out how old you actually are by realising that Bring It On came out in 1998.
Here Strange Brew #410 - Start A Band - (21/03/25) - Lads, you probably know that Adebisi Shank have a new single out, but still. Class. Speaking of new singles, there’s a deadly one from Ezra Furman. Gruff’s new reissue will feature some previously only available on vinyl tracks. Anna B Savage is playing the Róisín tonight and the Unitarian Church tomorrow, so that’s going to be deadly. What else? Go get your WHY? tickets for next week so you don’t have to hear everyone talking about how good it was afterwards and you should have been there. YOU can be one of those people telling other people that. Also, The Null Club’s new single is great and there’s a special exclusive record day bungle and performance by Paddy Hanna at The RAGE in Dublin. Whew. Said that in one breath.
Here's Strange Brew #408 What Do I Know (07/03/25) - This week, I talk to Shark School about their undying love for an insatiable desire to support Mannequin Pussy (Mannequin Pussy, if you are listening, take note). Also, it’s an international women’s day special. Enjoy
Here's Strange Brew #407 - I Love That For You (28/02/25) - Had a chat with Cormac Battle. He loves a bit of Teen Age Riot. Who doesn’t? Also, loads of new music. Albums from Joshua Burnside, Maria Kelly, Deep Sea Diver are out today. A load of these bands are on tour. Go buy tickets. Come see The Vaselines in the Róisín, for example.

Dublin-based songwriter Paddy Hanna today reveals “Cannibals”, the first track from his forthcoming album The Hill. “Cannibals” is out now on all digital platforms. The Hill, which will be released on September 25th, is available to pre-order via https://www.strangebrew.ie/
As Paddy explains about the new single - “Cannibals is a maze of conflicted thought, it asks the question, are we decent people or demons in cheap wigs? The track mixes organic with inorganic sounds to create that conflict, acoustic instruments blend with found drum sounds while woozy synthesisers create an uncertain haze. The end-result, I hope, is something resembling Ennio Morricone by way of Late period Tom Waits, but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions”.
The album features Girl Band’s Adam Faulkner and Daniel Fox on Drums & Double Bass, Daniel Fitzpatrick (Badhands, The Mighty Stef) on guitar & Keys and Jill Redmond on Vocals. The record was produced by Daniel Fox and the artwork was designed by Jill Redmond.
Paddy explains further about the album – “We lost ourselves on the Hill, Daniel, Daniel, Adam and I. a seemingly endless spell of isolation spent banging sheet metal, rusted hubcaps and blistering our fingers through non stop recording.
The Hill is an internal musical about how the past and the present exist at the same time in our minds. It deals with the struggles of mental health, the sometimes difficult search for happiness and the moral conflict of growing up in Catholic Ireland.
As a listener I want you to take a seat inside my head, to smell the west cork air, to feel the gravel under your feet. In order to get this we set up ambient mics outside our makeshift studio to capture the natural landscape, we wandered boatyards and an abandoned train station recording old bits of metal we would clang, to give the album a sense of place. Sonically we also wanted to step away from the String sections used on Leafy Stiletto, opting instead to create melodies and tones using vocals and synthesisers.
Most importantly however, I just wanted to put the past behind me on this record, I wanted to leave it on the hill. I hope you enjoy my therapy”.
Hanna’s third album will be released via Strange Brew
Here’s Strange Brew #213 - The World Stops Spinning - with gugai on 8radio.com. Bleeding Heart Pigeons tell us their favourite song, plus Proper Micro NV, These Are Atoms, Sinead White, Matt Berninger, Owen Pallett, The Beths, Silverbacks, JJ Lee, Dream Wife, Cass McCombs, Keaton Henson, Laura Marling, Murli X King Pallas and Sparks
"I knew at the start of the production process for this album that the record as a whole was going to sound totally different to anything that I've ever created or released to date. It had to be. I think subconsciously, I wanted to create a really unique record that pushed the boundaries a little bit. Not so much formulated pop structured songs, but more going with the flow and letting the tracks be what they want to be, when they want to be it. Every song written was a complete blank canvas. I really did have no idea where each one was going to go.
I've made something that I'm really proud of which is important to me. It can get quite heavy and upbeat when it wants to. I wrote a lot of it whilst touring the last record at festivals etc - so I was in that frame of mind. I was more hands on and in depth this time around too in terms of mixing etc. I didn't know when to stop at points! Back and forth, back and forth.
But it's done now, and I will have more news soon on a release date etc. For now, here is the first single.
So Much To Give & Live For is the first single taken from the new, upcoming album from Limerick electronic music singer, songwriter and producer Proper Micro NV (Rory Hall).
'So Much To Give & Live For' is a real go with the flow sort of track. It started off as something totally different, then changed, then settled. Then changed again. It kind of sums up the direction of the album as a whole. It's vocally experimental with a lot of chopping and altering. I think its my favourite song on the new record and I'm so proud that I've managed to make this kind of track - something that is actually quite free-form and relatively expansive, but also something that could work on a weird dance-floor.

"I wrote 'Brain Upon Your Pillow' as a kind of Latin-y folk ballad, all finger picked guitar. It was written in the midst of Autre Monde really finding its feet, understanding what we were as a band, and it was just natural that it would become this groove thing with a hint of desperation and drama. That Grace Jones Pull Up to the Bumper beat, we'd be happy to play it for hours, so the song stretches out on it a bit before taking its other turns. It's a paranoid song, it's about not sleeping and the threats that torment the character at night. I always picture them as some kind of huckster made good for whom the con is over. It's Uncut Gems!"

I've limited this to songs that came out in 2002, not just what I was playing then, because that's WAY easier to figure out. Hope you enjoy it.
