Early Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the church that before the Easter celebration there should be a forty-day season of spiritual preparation. During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when persons who had committed serious sins and had separated themselves from the community of faith were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to participation in the life of the church. In this way the whole congregation was reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith.

We begin this time of preparation through the receiving of the ashes of the palm branches as an outward and visible sign of God’s inward working in your heart and soul. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall to return

Tonight we are going to revisit and ponder the meaning of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. We will contemplate the depth of evil that human beings can perpetrate and we will also contemplate the heights of love that God has poured out upon us.

View Details

We say that when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit they fell into sin. Theologians call this The Fall. But what if The Fall did not make our spiritual ancestors so much evil, as it left them wounded? What if our suffering stems from the original wounds, not the original sin? And Jesus Christ came to heal us?

Centering Psalm: Psalm 34:1-8

Scriptures : II Corinthians 5:14-21 and Ephesians 2:11a, 12b-18

What do Jesus Christ, the cross, and castration have in common? More than you think! We believe that Christ died to take away our sins. But must blood be spilt in order for us to be saved? Did Jesus have to die in order for God to forgive us? Moral influence theory offers us a different way to understand the cross. Maybe God isn’t mad at us.

View Details

We have been taught that the death of Jesus on the cross takes away our sin. But exactly how does that work? Does Jesus take our rightful place in order to placate an angry God? Or does somehow Jesus’ death break the power of death? These various ideas and images are called “theories of atonement.” During Lent we will examine many of the ways atonement and the cross have been understood throughout Christian history. We will find that each understanding sheds light on all the ways God loves and cares for us.

Why do I keep doing the same dumb thing over and over again? How can I be free? In the second sermon in our Lenten sermon series “If the Cross Is the Answer, What Is the Question?”, we explore how we find freedom in Christ. God has paid a King’s ransom for us!
