If you have a fashion brand chances are at some point or right now you might be wondering why you are not selling - at all or more of your products.

It is very common for new brands to launch and sell nothing for a long time. Imagine having spent months and years working on your brand and a vast amount of time and money and then silence. No traffic to your website, no sales...and everyone you ask telling you how nice your product is. This is the reality for many newly launched brands.

Then a few years later - you are not selling enough - you know you can sell more but why is it not happening?

The answer for many is simple and hiding in plain sight.

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • The four reasons why you may not be making any sales;
  • What could be wrong if you are NOT making any ales at all?
  • What can be the reason behind not selling MORE?
  • Why conventional marketing is not working as efficiently for fashion brands?
  • Why marketers are wrong to speak of multiple ideal client profiles and why you really ONLY have one.
  • Why you need to tailor your marketing to the three types of customers you will have at any one time?
  • and much, much more...

Back in 2008 I launched my very own fine jewellery brand Deci London. Despite knowing so much after working for 10+ years in the fashion industry, launching and growing a brand and business of my own came with a whole new set of learning and lessons I didn't expect.

Reflecting back on running the brand for 8+ years has resulted in 19 lessons which you can read all about HERE, but in this episode, I share 3 invaluable lessons that I often share with brands I work and advise and are lessons everyone must learn from.

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • Why asking for advice from experts and business gurus can be detrimental to your business.
  • Why if you are not aligned with what you create as a product or business, you will not succeed and get the results that you want and need.
  • Go where the demand for your products and business is. Move with the demand and expand on your target market.

Meet Monika Young, a London-based creative, ex-fast fashion buyer and a lover of all things California.

When her buying job in Berlin started giving her the blues, she knew she had to make a change. She saw first-hand how fast fashion brands were destroying the planet and she wasn’t down for being part of the problem.

Launching Monika The Label was born out of her love for fashion and desire to re-imagine how a fashion brand can be fun and do good at the same time.

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • How her dream job of being a buyer pushed Monika to walk away and start her own brand doing the opposite of everything she experienced and learned as a buyer;
  • How she balanced sourcing and manufacturing in the UK with offering a well priced mid-market product that is affordable for her customer base;
  • How she got copied multiple times and her approach to dealing with this creative "worst nightmare" type of challenge;
  • What her plans for growing her label are and what she is ding in order to become a fully circular fashion brand;
  • How she great a community before she launched her brand;
  • much much more...

Key Takeaways:

  • "Working as a buyer and seeing the cost prices at which we were buying products made me question the ethics and practices of the industry. How can buying a garment at $3 be possible and provide a living wage for those who make it?"
  • “Even if the garment can no longer be worn, there are many ways in which the fabric can be re-used and up-cycled”
  • “My priority is to focus on growing my brand and myself”
  • “Learn from your mistakes and when things seemingly go wrong, don’t spend too much time feeling down about it because the solution is often so much better than before.”

Yusuf’s passion for making started whilst reading law at The London School of Economics where he thrived in the extracurricular. He continued to explore his creative side whilst training to be a solicitor. An avid workshop taker, he tried the gamut of crafts and discovered a passion for premium natural materials and a flair for working with his hands

A chance weekend workshop in The Cotswolds introduced Yusuf to the world of traditional British leather craftsmanship and began a quest that has taken Yusuf all over the world to learn from the best and returning home to obsessively hone his skills in his home studio

An all-consuming hobby turned into a career and you can learn all about it and a lot more in this episode:

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • How Yusuf turned a passion into a hobby into a profession and why he is proud to be a craftsman;
  • What are the mistakes he made and continues to make that he would like other creatives to know about;
  • The importance of not falling for the current culture glorifying the idea of "hustling" [12:00]
  • The importance of having different streams of income [18:00]
  • How to protect your designs from being copied [33:00]
  • What it means to be "sustainable" as a brand [38:00]

Key Takeaways:

  • Leatherwork is a beautiful marriage of beautiful material and the craftsmanship process.
  • Craft is about connecting. Connecting with the materials and then transmitting that connection.
  • For me, there is no choice but to work on my own.
  • Making is therapy. It is a way to process things, a way to turn whatever feelings I have inside into something beautiful.
  • When most people start out they want to overprice the value of their art.
  • Why are you setting up a brand if you care for the planet?

Making more products is not saving anyone! The solution is not making more stuff!

Most creative brand founders inexperienced in business observe and emulate how others do it. However, so much can be missed and left invisible to a trained eye.

In this episode, you'll discover how to add to your collection range strategically and by taking a lesser risk. Growth can come from many sources and not everything you can offer as a product under the label of your brand must be completely new and designed and made by you alone.

Thinking and acting strategically with an end outcome in mind is the secret sauce many successful brand founders utilise successfully and use later as leverage to faster and bigger gains and growth. You can too!

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • The four hybrid collection creation opportunities are available to anyone in the fashion industry.
  • Why using external sources to add to your already existing range can be a smart move.
  • How to know what to use and when to use hybrid co-creation opportunities.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hybrid co-creation opportunities allow for low-risk, maximum gains experimentation.
  • There is more than one way to grow your product range and fast track the growth of your brand.
  • You don't have to choose this or that. The fashion business is not black or white. You can have both - this AND that.

Meet Sonia Summan - a multi-talented fashion industry expert who has spent 20+ years specialising in sales for a wide range of brands from the high street to the luxury segment of the industry. Quite honestly - there is nothing Sonia doesn't know about growing a fashion brand vis a vis different routes to market. Which is what this episode is all about...

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • What Sonia's current role in the fashion industry is (clue: she wears more than one fashion hat) and how Sonia learned to be a top sales expert;
  • How the sales opportunities within the industry have changed over the last couple of decades and what are they (hint: Sonia has been part of setting up JVs, franchises, wholesale, licensing, retail set up and more...)
  • What caused her leave working for fast fashion (there were weeks when she made over 1 million pounds in sales in that one week alone) and pivot; working for fast fashion meant that sometimes she was involved in selling over 52 collections a year;
  • The importance of networking as a brand growth strategy and getting organic reach
  • The importance of having a two-fold sustainability outlook - environment and business.
  • When is licensing the right route for a small brand to explore and how to make the best of this sales option
  • what she do now and why she is so happy at this point of her career.

Episode Takeaways:

  • High street selling is about volume (margins can be lower) and has to hit the MOQ of the supplier whereas in luxury fashion sales numbers are lower and there is a focus on nurturing the customer along the buyer journey.

As we turn the leaf to a new year - what can we expect from a year that follows on from an already very challenging past couple of years?

In this episode, Dessy discussed five core themes she believes are important to take note of and be mindful of as the new year unfolds.

Episode notes:

Discover how the core themes of 2022 will affect your fashion brand and business:

  • Survival
  • Think Global and act locally
  • 360 Degrees Sustainability by Design
  • Less is More
  • Community First
  • Bonus: Collaborations

Key Takeaways:

  • Fashion brands must evaluate their business and find ways to strengthen their supply chains, sourcing, manufacturing and logistics networks, with a renewed focus on being agile, sustainable, transparent and exercising better cost management.

  • It's time to talk less and act more. Greater effort needs to come from the initial stages of the design process, sourcing of materials, how we look at merchandising, production, marketing and sales, consumption and then disposal.

  • A survey compiled by McKinsley indicates that the consumer mindset is not strongly tied to the fashion cycle. This offers greater freedom and opportunities to small emerging brands.

While most of us procrastinate from time to time, creatives often take procrastination to a whole new level and turn it into perfectionism. Perfectionism, in turn, drives us mad and makes us feel incomplete, never quite good enough, and robs us of any joy creativity may bring. Sound familiar?

This is the topic of this episode and who better to speak to than Deborah Taylor - a certified hypnotherapist who is an expert in working with entrepreneurs and helping them overcome procrastination and perfectionism. She is also the author of the book "How to be a Finisher", which is a must-read for anyone who may or may not suffer from bouts of procrastination.

Episode Notes In this episode discover:

  • What causes perfectionism and procrastination and why we are all to a small or large degree guilty of avoiding finishing what we start.
  • When is procrastination good for us and we should not feel guilty about taking things slowly;
  • How to overcome perfectionism in life and the workplace;

Fashion clothing manufacturing is a key process in the lifecycle of launching and growing a product-based brand. Often mismanaged, rarely given its dues - fashion manufacturing is the Cinderella of the fashion industry. It does all the heavy lifting and hard work for fashion brands large and small but is always mistreated.

With all the recent focus on local manufacturing and the focus on large brands misusing overseas apparel factories and leaving them stranded with cancelled orders, it is easy to forget that offshore manufacturing also includes small businesses delivering invaluable services to the fashion industry. Not every brand is able to afford to work locally and pay fair local labour prices. Equally not all overseas factories are large operations, serving fast fashion and employing cheap labour.

In this candid conversation, we meet Karishma Kapur - a fashion clothing factory founder from Mumbai, India who runs a small apparel factory working with female-run, independent clothing brands. Unlike most manufacturers, Karishma has her own passions and business mission that she was woven into the business activities of her business.

Episode notes: In this episode discover:

  • How Karishma set up a fashion clothing factory by herself and how she started;
  • What is it like to run a fashion clothing factory in Asia and the challenges most creative entrepreneurs do not see or understand take place;
  • How she has chosen to be different from the mainstream manufacturing landscape and what makes her stand out;
  • The reality of fashion manufacturing
  • Karishma's appeal to fashion creative entrepreneurs

and much more...

I don't know about you but I found myself wondering lately if "fair trade fashion" and "sustainability" were one and the same thing or not? What happened to "fair trade"? A few years ago everyone was talking about it and all of a sudden no one is but the focus has moved to sustainability? Why and how can this happen?

As always - when I have a question that I can't answer by myself - I search for the best person who can help me with it.

In today's episode, I speak to Morin George - a buyer and product developer in fair trade who spent over 20 years working with artisans around the world to showcase their heritage skills and culture through the development of beautiful products.

Over the years Morin was able to spend time on the ground with suppliers as well as mingle with policymakers and witness firsthand the impact fair trade practices can have on communities globally.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What is "fairtrade" and how is it different from "sustainability"?
  • Why fairtrade is perhaps more important than sustainability?
  • What can small independent fashion brands learn and implement in terms of fairtrade practices in order to create impact within the world and the fashion industry?
  • What is driving and motivating Morin to launch her own fashion label?

Key Takeaways:

  • There are ten fairtrade principles that align with the UN Sustainability goals and "sustainability" is one of the 10 principles.
  • "When you can you should, when you can’t - do what you can"
  • Asking questions, working together, and caring is the foundation to successful business and sustainability practices.

For some, this may be a risk too far. A form of gambling many may not be willing to take. But Hayat was fearless and did take the risk to gamble the little she had and it paid off.

The biggest cause for fashion brands to fail before they have even launched or later down the line and cease trading is a lack of finances.

Building a fashion brand is not cheap and having enough to cover day-to-day operations and cover development and production for two seasons at any one time is essential.

But by contrast, raising finance is not easy. While there are many options, most creatives are not aware of most of the opportunities or if they are - they may not be able to present their ideas in such a way as to unlock these opportunities.

In this episode, we look into what financing options are there from start up stage to scale up phase.

Listen to the episode and discover:

  • How to finance your fashion brand from the initial "I have an idea" stage to launch;
  • What questions do you need to ask yourself before starting a fashion business and looking for ways to finance it?
  • What are the financing options for the early stages of business and what is bootstrapping?
  • What are the expectations when you borrow mone6y from friends and family and other investors?
  • Is getting a loan a good idea?
  • What are the advantages of using credit cards to pay for your business purchases?
  • Who is start-up loan a good fit for?
  • How to finance for growth?
  • Why you should always keep money in your business;
  • When is the best time to start looking for investors?
  • What are investors looking for when considering investment and how to select and vet investors;
  • What is the true cost of getting investment money?

  • More than 80% of used fabrics in fashion are made out of blended fibers. They cannot be handled in recycling.
  • There are three types of waste - pre-industrial, post-industrial, and post-consumer waste.
  • If we want to turn waste into raw material again, we need to understand what we want to make and use this material after.
  • Brands and innovation need to find the sweet spot in order to work together.
  • Big brands have the power to push the agenda and to influence the supply chain, but it takes them longer to implement change compared to small brands.
  • Every brand should ask themselves: what impact do you want to create as a brand? If you want to create a BIG impact, then you need to ensure your process is scalable.

  • "The whole process of bra shopping left me sick." There is a whole segment of men and women who are ignored by both the fashion and medical industries. "It's important to have things that function well, but it is important to have things be aesthetically pleasing as well."

  • "Your brand is everything" No matter how great your product is and even if patented, anything can be copied and there is little to no recourse for small brands. Building a solid recognizable brand is what ensures long-term business success.

  • "If you don't have problems, you don't have production" No matter how small or large, how financially stable and secure a business can be - manufacturing is a delicate balancing act where anything at any point can go wrong. Employing commercial thinking and remaining firm but practical is the only way to keep going forward.

  • Running out of stock is a good problem to have unless you have a time-sensitive problem. In which case, your customers, no matter how loyal, move their business to where there is product availability.

What sets successful businesses apart from the not-so-successful ones is not the money they had to begin with or the quality and the ideas they built a business upon, but their ability to identify and recover from mistakes.

Episode Notes

In this episode, Dessy shares the three biggest mistakes she has identified that she's made (repeatedly) over the years. They are mistakes many entrepreneurs make too and not even realize these small actions and thoughts are standing in their way.

Listen to this episode and discover: - why is it important to charge for your products and services for day one of your business; - why FOCUS is the name of the game if you want to succeed; - why you should be careful of accepting "favours" and more....

Key Takeaways:

  • If you are not charging for products and services, you are not collecting valuable data.
  • You can't ride two horses with one arse;
  • Surround yourself with the right people, on the right operational terms.
  • Don't major the minors. Doing business is really simple and if you are struggling then you are most likely over-complicating on every level of being and doing.

This is Unfolded is a new "brand" and a new form of shopping rolled into one. Though the concept is not new, the way the founders are doing retail is challenging the fashion retail industry for sure. Interested to know more....? OK - here is some more...

The team behind This is Unfolded worked in the fashion industry for a long time and for many years had been playing their small part in chipping away at the inefficiencies and inequalities in the current model, trying to reduce waste and make a fairer system.

As the coronavirus pandemic started to take hold of the world last year, the fashion retail model broke down. Last May, in an attempt to help those who lost the most, ie factory workers who overnight lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the cancellation of high street retailers' orders, the team came up with an idea. They launched a new project and named it aptly - the Lost Stock.

They set out to save those canceled orders and clothes from landfills, and help struggling factories and garment workers by packing and selling "mystery boxes" of clothes. Their aim was to sell 10,000 mystery boxes of clothing made up of these canceled orders by the end of 2020. It worked out a little better than they hoped…

Listen to the interview and find out more, such as:

  • how many mystery boxes were sold;
  • how they managed to sell the quantity they sold
  • what impact was created by the sales
  • what they thought of doing then
  • how they are unfolding the fashion retail industry.

"Sustainability" is on everyone's lips and brains, yet almost everyone calling their brand "sustainable" is effectively "greenwashing". Regardless of the size, regardless of what and how much they are doing.

If you are working on launching your brand or already in business and calling your brand "sustainable" then you need to stop and hear this episode of the podcast.

Episode Notes

In this episode, we cover the following: - what it means to be "sustainable" - can any brand and the fashion industry be sustainable - what it means to be sustainable - how to be "sustainable" authentically - how to grow your brand the right way

Key takeaways:

  • Sustainability is not new and is not easy to achieve. It is a complex issue and it requires a holistic approach and strategic execution.

Key takeaways:

  • One of the biggest mistakes creatives make is duplicating the content on their product pages, which leads Google to downrank their website.

  • If you create a brand bible and define clearly the tone of your brand's voice, you will be able to ensure continuity in the way your brand is presented across all marketing channels regardless of who is writing and working for your brand.

  • There is a clear distinction between building a business and a brand. If you are creating a brand, you need to ensure a 360* consistency in your brand's visual and verbal presentation at all times.
