A show with two pretty cool dudes who watch pretty cool movies. Each episode, one host brings in a movie unbeknownst to the other. They watch it. They discuss it. And you listen to it.
After attending a pre-release screening and a Q&A with the Baymeister himself, the boys sat down and recorded their thoughts on the newest Bay film, "Ambulance".

"Spectacular! Thrilling! Different!" This is the quote that headlines the poster for the 1976 film: The Astrologer. Does it tell you who said such things? No. A very telling example for a film so rare and obscure that the only place one may see it is on a website called: archive.org.
Some films are forbidden fruit. But instead of possessing the sin of knowledge, they possess the sin of sheer and utter stupidity. In what may perhaps be the greatest piece of vanity art that has ever been captured on screen, the boys are duking it out with the gangly man child that is Craig Denney. A man who is credited with only one film ever in his short "career" as a filmmaker. A man who gives Tommy Wiseau a run for his money. A man who may or may not be dead under the most unusual circumstances.

Created by the legendary Canadian genre-filmmaking team Astron-6, this film pulls from the great giallos and even recreates some of the best scenes from Martino, Fulci, and Argento. Tonight is the coats night and the streets are to blame in Lucio Fulci's 1984 giallo: Murderock. The final giallo film the coats cover from the godfather of gore, filled with dancing, needles slowly piercing the breast plates of young women and more dancing! Will this final entry in the coats' giallo library for Fulci leave them dancing in the rain or rocking round the murder clock?

The coats are channeling their clairvoyant sides for Lucio Fulci's 1977 giallo: "The Psychic". Visions of a wall bodies, yellow paper cigarettes, and horse girls, OH MY! One of the final few directors to seriously take on the subgenre past its prime, Fulci offers a compelling tale that's spoiled due to its own tagline. Will the coats be compelled by the power of the psychic or will they want to bury it behind a wall of cement and bricks? Listen now!

The coats are testifying in an open court that they indeed did not dissect living dogs in Lucio Fulci's 1971 giallo: "A Lizard in a Woman's Skin". Fulci's second foray into the giallo genre, that sees him branching into more of what we know and love him for: the gore! (even if there's only a few snippets of it). The gore-maestro's films always feature the hand of the director at work when it comes to style and movement, and "A Lizard.." is no exception. Listen in as the coats dissect one of the most famous films of the subgenre.

The coats are convinced that they're seeing double in Lucio Fulci's 1969 (haha) giallo: "Perversion Story". We find a classic tale of insurance scamming at the heart of a rather rudimentary plot for a "yellow" that slowly unravels into something worth the wait. A checkmark on the coat's list of giallos they've been eagerly awaiting to watch and you SHOULD too! Or not. It's your life. But it'd be better if you did, loser.

Using his daughter, Asia Argento, once again to explore the blurring of reality and identity when faced with TRAUMA (but not that trauma). Often overlooked, "Stendhal" has seen a resurgence in popularity and forced many to cast their eyes on this vintage 90's horror film. Will this giallo have the coats down with the Syndrome? The coats are donning masks and counting crows at the theatre, where the main event is Dario Argento's 1987 giallo: "Opera". Arguably one of the last great films the Italian Hitchcock devised, "Opera" is a whirlwind of a giallo that pulls out many of Argento's old tricks. The coats are climbing up the exterior wall and into the cubist house of the one and only Dario Argento, to cover what we here at Conspicuous Trenchcoats consider the greatest giallo of all time, 1982's: "Tenebrae". Made and released well outside the giallo boom years of the early 70's, "Tenebrae" marked a return to the sub-genre for Argento; following a brief foray into the fantastique world of "Suspiria" and "Inferno". It was initially released in theaters with a lukewarm reception and heavy censorship, but over time has become a favorite of fans and critics alike.

The coats are going deep...and deeper...into Dario Argento's 1975 giallo: "Deep Red". If you know anything about giallo, then you know the significance of Argento's fourth giallo film to the history of the sub-genre. If you don't, then you should stop reading this and watch this film NOW.
Looking back, one can say that "Deep Red" was the turning point for Argento, when he shed his skin and embraced the more supernatural elements that he'd been toying with in the creative process leading up to 1975. After a respite from his animal trilogy, and a brief. sojourn into the italian comedy scene with "The Five Days", Argento returned with a renewed taste for horror and a new music collaborator in the prog rock band Goblin (their first--but not last collaboration), that took the world by storm.

The coats are catching all of the insects in the finale to Dario Argento's zoology trilogy: "Four Flies on Grey Velvet". An often overlooked Argento in comparison to the rest of his filmography, his junior feature lays the groundwork for the best that's yet to come. Will the coats be buzzing about this giallo, or will they kick this carcass to the curb?

The coats are clawing their way through their second giallo film from "The Master of the Thrill" aka "The Italian Hitchcock" aka "The Father of Fear". The one and only Dario Argento and his 1971 sophomore feature: "The Cat O' Nine Tails". Capitalizing on the success of his debut feature (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), Argento quickly turned out his next film at the behest of the studios. He would go on to complete his animal trilogy with "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" in the same year. Often overshadowed by his later films, "Cat O' Nine Tails" has gained more praise in recent years as Dario's films get restored and reassessed. Will this cat have the coats giving it head scratches or will they have it neutered?

The coats are killing again...and again...and again...for Luigi Cozzi's 1975 giallo: "The Killer Must Kill Again". An under discussed giallo, past the zenith of the sub-genre, that spends most of its time trying to subvert expectations again...and again...and again. The coats dive into a discussion about their favorite <90 minute movies; what makes a great premise; and some spot-on impersonations. Will this giallo kill the coats or will they kill it?

The coats are conversing with one of the greats in the world of giallo: Michael Mackenzie. Michael is an author and senior producer at Arrow Films who wrote his inspiring 2013 PhD thesis titled: "Gender, Genre, and Sociocultural Change in the Giallo: 1970-1975" (disregard the 'pretentious' title as he calls it). He is incredibly well researched in the history and lore of giallo and was a fantastic guest to chat with. You can read the thesis in the show notes of this episode or go to his website: https://www.mrmackenzieauthor.com for all his most recent work.

The most experimental giallo film the coats have covered in the canon; full of fabulous editing and EGG-static cinematography. This film's got style and the Coat's curiosity, but does it have their attention? Listen now!

- Giulio Questi
Starring - Jean-Louis Trintignant

The coats are leaving on a jet plane headed all the way back to 1963's Rome, where a film made by one of Italy's premiere auteurs lit the match that sparked the entire Giallo-genre. That director is Mario Bava. The film is "Evil Eye" or "The Girl Who Knew Too Much". A classic black and white thriller that solidifies the giallo tropes; and an ending that has to be seen to be believed!

The coats are taking a gondola through the Venetian waterways to uncover the mystery behind director Aldo Lado's 1972 giallo: "Who Saw Her Die?". Filled to the brim with classic giallo tropes, this film subverts the genre in a way the coats haven't seen yet; and a score by Ennio Morricone that subverts himself! Will Aldo Lado's sophomore feature undo the wrongs of his first, in the eyes of the coats? Only one way to find out...

The coats are sitting down and ordering doubles--no triples--of J&B on the rocks while discussing director Luciano Ercoli's 1972 giallo: "Death Walks at Midnight". From rooftop chases to metal gauntlets and some hair-dos that define the phrase "Style over Substance", this film has it all.
The second film the coats have covered from director Luciano Ercoli, previously rifling through his 1970 giallo: "Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion". Have the coats turned coat and revised their opinions? Is Nieves Navarro the TRUE queen of giallo? And how much product placement for J&B can you fit in one film? All this and more on this episode of Conspicuous Trenchcoats.
Director
- Luciano Ercoli
Starring - Nieves Navarro (aka Susan Scott)
- Simón Andreu
- Peter Martell

The coats are biking through the back alleys to answer the all important question of Massimo Dallamano's 1972 giallo: "What Have You Done to Solange?". One of the few core giallos to take place outside of Italy, but with a cast of mainland Europeans. Someone is preying on the girls of a Catholic School in London and the killer's motivation is more precise than one might think. This film gives us some of the most gruesome imagery in the sub-genre. So pour yourself a glass of J&B and enjoy the conspicuous conversation.

The coats are peeking through the blinds and between the lines of Luigi Bazzoni's giallo: "The Fifth Cord" (1971). A masterclass in giallo filmmaking, thanks in large part to three-time Oscar winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. The coats cover some hot topics like: voyeurism; the emasculation of the leading man; and what the hell's going on with that title? So lock your rooms, sharpen your knives, and check your horoscope. It's time for Conspicuous Trenchcoats!
