Even though most Americans over the last decade have died due to chronic illness, over 2,000 adults die every year in accidents in Oregon alone. In this trilogy, we are going to talk about what to do if a loved one dies in an accident.

When someone has died by suicide, there can be a lot of emotions and heartache involved. There can be a lot of questions on how to talk about the person after they have died and how to celebrate their life. In this episode, Brian will be talking about planning a funeral for someone who has died by suicide.

But putting a plan in place is actually a smart and caring thing to do that helps to reduce stress and help make things easier in the future. In this episode, Brian talks about several small steps you can take to make sure that your wishes are recorded and followed after you have passed including utilizing a preplanning guide, legacy planning, whether a travel protection plan is right for you and what to do to appoint your next of kin.
For this episode, Brian talks about the financial side of a pre-arrangement. If you did not fully fund the pre-arrangement, there are several things you can do to help cover the costs for your loved ones. These could include:
- assigning a life insurance policy to the funeral home
- providing military discharge paperwork if you served
- providing tribal information to the funeral home to allow access to tribal funeral benefits
- providing information for your social security benefits
- creating a funeral trust
- creating a dedicated savings account
If your pre-arrangement was fully funded, here are a few tips and things to consider:
- Keep a copy
- Ensure it is fully portable
- Discuss other costs that may come up regarding your wishes with your funeral home
If you have already created your pre-arrangement with a funeral home, you may have already discussed what you want to do for your final resting place. With funeral homes that also owned a cemetery or mausoleum, during the pre-arrangement you may have already bought a plot or crypt. If you have not made those plans yet, Brian talks about different ideas to consider when looking at what to do for a final resting place.

There are many things to consider after an unexpected or sudden death, especially when planning a service. Burial at sea is often thought of as something that sailors and fishermen, but it is a service that anyone can elect for. A water burial can happen with both full body or the scattering of ashes in the ocean or at an inland body of water.
There are two ways that a water burial is regulated: the EPA through the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act of 1972 (MPRSA) and the Clean Water Act. These protect our waterways from debris and harmful waste. Brian covers how to select a burial container to not contribute to marine debris and the regulations that need to be followed during the burial. He provides suggestions on natural memorial objects such as scattering petals, flowers and wreaths.
In addition to regulations, Brian also talks about ideas on how to memorialize a loved one during a water burial or scattering. From taking pictures of the burial site and local landmarks to holding military honors, he covers a variety of memorializations that you could choose from. There is also an option for the Navy or Coast Guard to perform a water burial for former servicemember's. When the Navy or Coast Guard perform the water burial, the committal ceremony is performed while the ship is deployed. This means that the family cannot attend, though the commanding officer will send a letter to the family sharing the exact date, time, and location where the committal ceremony took place in addition to any photos that may have been taken.

There are benefits to pre-paying, such as locking in today’s rates, but there can be some reasons for hesitation.
