Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. As we wind down the season we take a look at how we're living in this age of modernity. We ask questions about why we have the desire to create spaces for fun, adventure, relaxation, rather than turning to the natural world? Do we even possess the skills to thrive and survive in nature? We also explore how we ourselves are nature and the ways in which modernity seeks to control behavior and appearance is far from the way we were designed to live. In a time of such urgency, the greatest freedom is moving at geologic speed, following the seasons, and connecting with our natural inheritance.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we explore the question of whether it’s possible, appropriate, or even morally necessary to separate a body of work ie. written or spoken teachings/anthologies, scientific discoveries, discography, political agendas, etc. from the person who created or shared them. Is it important in the context of being alive today to live our values at the cost of rejecting things we like, or affirm simply because we don't agree with the positionality of the creators? This is definitely a spicy episode, please weigh in on our IG page with your thoughts.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we talk about the blurred space that we’re currently occupying. Facing the deluge of heartbreaking headlines, trying to decipher if the news is real, if the videos we watch are real. Sometimes it can feel like were in Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale, or Isaac Asimov’s I Robot. We need to feel real ground inside and outside of our bodies. On this episode we talk about ways to cultivate ground in turbulent times.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we continue to discuss the ways we can invite men into a conversation about how to meet us in our grief or outrage over the release of SA files, continued *enocide, the attack on certain bodies in this country, eco collapse, and more. It’s because we care about men, we need men, that we continue to find ways of calling in, dialoguing, creating safe somatic experiences of withnessing, as a means to create the world we want to live in.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we talk about something that keeps coming up on social media, with our friends and clients, and even within ourselves, the idea that in the face of confrontation with the horrors that are being exposed here and abroad, we find ourselves feeling alone in our suffering even if we are partnered, and especially if we’re partnered with men. The experience of feeling deeply grief stricken or enraged causes many of our male partners to withdraw from empathizing with our lived experience. We dive deep into this phenomenon, and come out with more questions than answers but believe this is a worthwhile exploration. While devastation remains front and center in the news there are ways to engage in intimate conversation about how we feel, and what we need from our partners, calling them forward rather than pushing them away.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we talk about how we are marked and changed by surviving life’s hardest experiences and what that asks of us. The fairy tale ends with happily ever after, the heroine’s journey with the return; the brevity of both of those ways of ending stories do a disservice to what we’re actually here on Earth to do. The return is a long and laborious process. In fact, the process of integration and then living the lesson is the hardest part of the journey when our patterns are so deeply established and our culture rewards our default settings. This short episode is packed with hard truths and imbued with hope.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we talk about many things and dive deeper into how being embodied is to really LIVE the full catastrophe. We touch on the act of wintering as a great need in our current reality and what forces are actively keeping us from this scared rite. When we go within and develop the ability to be with the fullness of who we are, we come out with more compassion, empathy, courage, and capability to be with what is, what is happening, and with others.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we talk about how the release of information about sexual assaults perpetrated on young girls is flooding news, with the emphasis on the perpetrators and without sensitivity and care for those immediately involved and those that may have experienced similar trauma. As we watch, read, and talk about public figures in authority we may forget that this has an impact on all of our psyches but especially on those people who are forced to relive or identify with because of their personal experiences. We explore how sexual trauma impacts the daily lives of those who have experienced it and how we can be aware, informed and responsive as friends, partners, caregivers, and professionals.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. In this episode we take a deeper look at the ways the over culture defines what is feminine - in contradiction to our lived experience of living with both masculine and feminine energies in harmony and balance, what it took for us to understand the importance of both, and how we were able to find this for ourselves. This is not a gender specific conversation as all beings contain both energies.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. In this episode we spend time remembering Tracy’s dog Annie who recently crossed the rainbow bridge. Tracy shares vulnerably about her experience staying with grief and how that feels like an honoring of the bond Tracy and Annie have shared during some very difficult times. Losing a pet is a significant loss and should be treated as such; however productivity culture asks us to rush our grieving process. Kim shares a recent experience of personal confrontation which led to grief. Grief is an everyday reality and if left untended tears at the very fabric of our human experience.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. In this episode Tracy introduces the topic of perception vs reception. If we spend our time and energy worrying about what people think about us rather than feeling into the way that people receive us we miss the interaction of the space between us. We will never be able to truly know how people perceive us due to the fact that it is impossible to fully grasp another’s perspective; however we can meet in the space between in our interactions with others. This is a deeply embodied practice that requires us to cultivate a realistic and independent self-concept.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. In this episode we take a hint from the kids and explore the nuance of how vibe checking is a necessary component of interpersonal relationship dynamics. Often we pin difficult or problematic relational dynamics on the other person, frequently unaware of what we are bringing into the relational space. Vibe checking is so important especially when we repeat relational patterns in the hopes of getting our needs met.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. In this episode we discuss the importance of tending our dreams, privately and collectively. In turbulent times, our dreams are worth noticing, exploring, and sharing. Dreams are animating, life affirming connections to soul, ancestors, and the living Earth. The big question is why are so many of us resigned to collapse, despair, and hopelessness? Who benefits from the loss of collective dream tending? Have you noticed dreams missing in your life or the lives of those close to you? Within the exploration of this topic, Tracy warns us that there may be a pain point when we discover that we have in fact stopped daring to dream, and the reasons behind this. Be gentle with yourself as you work this in your system.

Welcome to season 5 of the Another Way To See It Podcast. On this episode we discuss how many of us center our trauma, and perhaps even take it on as an identity, knowingly or not. When our trauma functions in this way we limit our ability to connect deeply with others, and also limit our ability to access our full selves and engage with life as we’re meant to. This episode is an invitation to explore how trauma may function in your life and ways to renegotiate your relationship with it.

Where do you begin to find some kind of ground from which to move with the uncertainty of the times? On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about the ways we notice a sense of self-loathing/hatred impacting our relationship with others, ourselves, and the current political landscape. We have a tendency to blame ourselves for the ways we are “unworthy”, hiding parts of ourselves to fit in, find safety, or align with power. Often the cruelty that we see at play in the world conceals a deep sense of self-loathing on the part of leaders across all sectors. The antidote isn’t love and light, it’s a clear view of the systems at play, radical accountability, and self-acceptance- not in the sense of “that’s just the way I am”; but in actually acknowledging that often we’re doing the best that we can with the tools in our toolbox, and that others are doing the same, putting ourselves in other’s shoes, and simply trying to be a good human.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk intuition and validation. Many people are trying to “develop” their intuition. What does that mean? In this conversation, we posit that intuition is always there, and that the development piece is in our relationship with what already exists within each of us. Validation is quickly becoming a buzzword in wellness circles but how it’s being used and what it actually means might be very different things. We all need validation and we believe that community as well as self-validation are very critical especially in this moment in history.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about our experience living in LA while ICE, the National Guard, Marines, and police are rolling in, separating families, and turning their force against American citizens and humans just trying to live. What impact does the experience of living in what is quickly becoming a “police state” have on our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual bodies? How can we connect with our voices to speak the truth of our experience to help others? What will it take for us to escape the prison of individual comfort for the greater good?

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk power and perpetration. With yet another “Wellness Guru” outing himself as a Peter Pan narcissist, we are forced to ask what is going on that so many especially female bodies are victims of systems of power over -that diminish the feminine in the world. We talk about what is consent, what is delusion, discernment, and on and on. This episode comes with a TRIGGER WARNING, we talk about adult topics including SA, and use adult language.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about helping others. What motivates you to help? Have you ever considered the consequences of helping? Do you over help or under help and why? Sometimes we think that we’re helping, and actually we may be depriving another being of some kind of growth. Maybe we didn’t get the kind of mother we needed, maybe we experienced rupture within the mother child relationship, many of us wanted to become mothers and were unable, maybe we lost our mother and grieve that daily. There are so many complexities surrounding the idea of mother and so many different experiences of being or not being mothered well. The ways we curate our image and some of the ways that wearing masks affects us and others who view our content or experience us in real life. Anxiety, depression, disconnection, and more can be adverse effects of living a highly curated life, withholding the true experience of being human and flawed.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about Wintering and the lessons of the Winter Solstice. Wintering is the act of following nature inward and downward. Introspection, slowing down, hibernating, and practicing our ancestral inheritance of dreaming and storytelling in community. The solstice, the longest darkest night of the year is invitational to this practice and a real life, real time invitation to this process. A beckoning to listen for the call of the ancestors and future ones, to dream and plant seed for the coming Spring.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about what being part of a community (village) actually requires. We say we want support, companionship, solidarity, etc., and for that what are we willing to sacrifice or offer in return? In our mind, village is a living concept that requires maturity, competence, collaboration, and sharing of our resources, time, attention, and personal genius.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about the concept of Kinkeeping. Kinkeeping is a term brought into modern consciousness by Sociologist, Caroline Rosenthal in 1985 in an article called "Kinkeeping in the Familial Division of Labor".

”Kinkeepers play an important role in maintaining family cohesion and continuity. Their efforts contribute significantly to the family's social capital, providing emotional support and a sense of belonging to family members.”

Kinkeeping:

· Helps extended family members of stay in touch with one another.

· Facilitates the transfer of family, traditions, values, and histories from one generation to the next.

· Fosters the well-being of the familial unit.

Kinkeeping activities include: writing letters, telephone calls, visiting, sending gifts, caregiving, providing financial help.

Kinkeeping is largely the role of women or the feminine in relationship and is seen as unpaid labor.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about ways in which we oversimplify the human experience by making someone either the hero or villain of our story. We notice this especially when considering athletes, celebrities, teachers, politicians, and those we love. In this exploration, we consider why we do this as a culture, what we might be avoiding by implementing this kind of practice, and what harm is caused by this very adolescent fracturing of the complete human experience.

On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about what living in a polycrisis feels like to us.

Polycrisis is generally understood to mean: a cluster of related global risks with compounding effects such that the overall impact exceeds the sum of each part.

Today, the world’s simultaneous and overlapping crises include a mounting climate crisis, wars, inflation shock, democratic dysfunction, health crisis, banking, housing , and food instabilities, and much more.

The feeling that life is extra hard or harder than it has been in the past is real and when we name and contextualize our experience we begin to understand that it’s not just us or in our heads, life is hard. There are certain truths that we need to face. Burying our heads in the sand is not going to stop these things from happening. How do we connect with our selves, and communities in these times? What kind of thinking and behaviors move the needle in a positive direction?

Call to action: in honor of Indigenous People’s Day please consider donating time, money, or resources to one of your local indigenous communities.

Indigenous causes receive just 23 cents out of every $100 of of philanthropic giving in the United States. Moreover, the latest data on the wealth of Native people in the United States shows that for every $1 of wealth a white American holds a Native American has eight cents. On this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about the importance of being fully present during transitional moments in our daily lives. These moments between work and home, or between daily tasks can be a time to ground and reconnect with our bodies. Life can be fast paced and often our minds are three steps ahead. Transitional spaces can provide our bodies a chance to catch up with our minds. These spaces can also be places in which we leak energy. If we begin to bring our conscious awareness to these times throughout our day we can claim our time back, soothe our nervous systems, and bring our full presence to whatever we are doing.

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we complete our intense exploration of grief, by discussing the ways ritual is an essential element in grief tending. Ritual, Francis says, “provides the elements necessary to help transform whatever it is we are carrying in our psyches.”

We have been using Francis Weller’s book- The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief, as a jumping off point and guide to this exploration, we have gone through the five gates that Francis has written about and are on our own for the discussion of further potential gates. We acknowledge that there are many many ways to name, explore, experience, and tend grief. Francis has given context, language, and probably most importantly the permission and invitation that we must befriend our grief, bring it close, and offer the care and compassion sorely missing from our modern society.

Francis Weller is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. We highly recommend that you find a copy of this book that you can write in because it is such a valuable resource for the inevitable encounters that we all have or will have with grief.

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we continue our discussion of grief by addressing other possible gates of grief. Today we talk about a proposed 6th gate, brought forth by writer, artist, death worker, Rachael Rice. The sixth gate is called For Harm Done (that cannot be undone). Rachael says “the sixth gate includes the ways we avoidably and unavoidably collude with systems of harm, for moral injuries, for bystanding or freezing during abuse, for accidents and ignorance, for leveraging supremacies like whiteness as a vector of harm, and for just trying to exist and thrive in a war-hungry, deeply shitty culture with the most aggressively remedial world view on earth.”

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about working with inherited or ancestral grief, articulated in Francis Weller’s book-The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief. The Fifth Gate of grief, Weller describes ancestral grief thusly; “ We hold this grief in our beings, even after many generations in the new land. This sorrow becomes concentrated over time, gathering grief unto itself, and is carried in our psyches unconsciously as diminished inheritance.”

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about the Third Gate of Grief, as articulated in Francis Weller’s book- The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief. The third gate is: The Sorrows of the World. It is in this gate that we touch the grief experienced when we consider eco-crisis, economic insufficiency and instability, war, destruction of natural habitats, extinction of species and cultures. This quote by Joanna Macy illustrates it beautifully: “We are capable of suffering with our world, and that is the true meaning of compassion. It enables us to recognize our profound interconnectedness with all beings. Don't ever apologize for crying for the trees burning in the Amazon or over the waters polluted from mines in the Rockies. Don't apologize for the sorrow, grief, and rage you feel. It is a measure of your humanity and your maturity. It is a measure of your open heart, and as your heart breaks open there will be room for the world to heal. That is what is happening as we see people honestly confronting the sorrows of our time.

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we dive into the second gate of grief, as articulated in Francis Weller’s book-The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief. The second gate is The Places That have Not Known Love. Francis writes:
These are the profoundly tender places precisely because they have lived outside of kindness, compassion, warmth, or welcome. These are the places within us that have been wrapped in shame and banished to the farthest shores of our lives.

This gate is another one of these universal portals to the soul. By tending the grief of this gate we retrieve parts of ourselves long banished, we begin to value, know our worthiness, and claim our birthright-belonging.

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we enter the first gate of grief, as articulated in Francis Weller’s book- The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief. The first gate is Everything You Love You Will Lose. Loss is universal to all of us. This gate addresses loss of life, relationships, identity, dignity, health, and much more. On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about Men’s mental health. June is Men’s Mental Health awareness month in the US, and the statistics are alarming. Over 6 million men experience depression each year. Males account for 10% of patients with anorexia and 35% of patients with binge eating disorders. 19.1 million Americans experience anxiety disorder and 3,020,000 men have a panic disorder, agoraphobia, or any other phobia. Male suicide has been on the rise since 2000 and is the 7th leading cause of death for men in the US. We can only heal as a collective if everyone begins to heal. At Another Way To See It, we believe that you are not broken or defective; but a human living in systems that aren't conducive to thriving. Competition, pressure to achieve, financial and relational stress, bypassing, and the lack of community all paly roles in the quality of your mental well-being. One of our favorite quotes is: “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”- J. Krishnamurti . We hope you get something of value from this episode; but most importantly we hope that you realize that – YOU ARE NOT ALONE, AND THERE IS HELP AVAILABLE.**Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline- 988

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about the purpose of doing the healing work. In the context of Western psychology, healing is a private matter, typically to be done 1 on 1 with maybe only a therapist to bear witness. In this conversation we ask questions about the purpose of healing, and what role community plays in our personal healing, and what our responsibility is to help heal our communities.

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we examine current events and personal growth front liners. People who are first to think differently, and take action personally and collectively. Who is proximal to power, and how that may play a role in the ability to speak up, disrupt, disengage or confront injustice. From the personal to the transpersonal, micro to macro, why does the “fringe” seem to move first?

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we talk about what Bearing Witness actually means. We hear it being said a lot right now and it’s such an important concept to integrate, if we want to create a world where healing is possible and all beings can thrive. We like to call it Bearing With- Ness because it means that we start being with our own discomfort in order to build the capacity to hold, stay close to, and be with the pain and suffering in the people and world around us, to impact generative change.

“Witness” is a powerful and evocative word. This word has “extraordinary moral and cultural force today” because of its connections with concepts of suffering, justice, and truth. “Witnessing” is often seen as involving at least two parties—a witness, who testifies, and a secondary witness, who listens and, importantly, acknowledges what they have heard. Such witnessing has become highly visible in the form of survivor testimony at inquiries and commissions addressing claims of historical and ongoing injustices and human rights abuses in settler-colonial and transitional societies. Witnessing, particularly in the context of telling stories of human rights violations, often includes a request to the audience to become morally accountable for an event.”Sourced from- Bearing Witness: Creating the Conditions of Justice for First Nations Children Published online by Cambridge University Press: 30 April 2021We always love to hear from you, reach out:

On this episode of Another Way To See It, Tracy invites us to lean into the fear and isolation experienced when we dare to speak out on micro and macro levels. What happens to us in our bodies and minds? What’s realistic about those fears and feelings, and what are we willing to go through to speak our truth?

Maggie Kuhn quote:

Kuhn’s advice to activists interested in creating social change shows the strength of her convictions: “Leave safety behind. Put your body on the line. Stand before the people you fear and speak your mind – even if your voice shakes. When you least expect it, someone may actually listen to what you have to say. Well-aimed slingshots can topple giants. And do your homework.”

On this episode of Another Way To See It, We sit down with our good friend Tracy Holemeyer to have a frank and heartfelt discussion about privilege. Privilege has been defined as: Access to, or enjoying rights or advantages, simply by membership of a particular group or identity. These rights/advantages are often unearned and/or undeserved.

Privilege is a "hot button" topic lately and it's our hope that by sharing our experience of exploring our own privilege we offer a sort of guide for your own exploration of your privileges and how you consciously utilize these for not only your benefit but also to help others that may not share the same access, luxury, rights, and privileges that you do. Joseph Campbell said, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." What are the barriers that keep you from knowing and expressing yourself?

Tracy Holemeyer is a soul worker, self-healing coach, meditation guide, breathwork facilitator, speaker, and writer. She helps people align and heal into their truth and purpose.

On this episode of Another Way To See It, we discuss a very common experience of, taking on other people's problems, emotions, and reactions as our own. We often think that by shouldering other's issues we are managing expectations or saving people's feelings, often at the cost of expressing our needs, wants, and desires - which can have devastating outcomes.

On this episode of Another Way To See It, we challenge the notion of hard work by replacing it with heart-centered and heart-informed work. Nothing wrong with working hard but ask yourself, does this work drain me or fill me up? When we align ourselves with our highest potential working doesn't feel like drudgery, it excites and motivates us. Our culture worships the grind, and those that can suffer the longest for the most materialistic goals. In this episode, we dive deep into what the real compass of our lives should be- our hearts.

On this episode of Another Way To See It, we discuss using our discernment to see the limitations of Gurus, Guides, Coaches, Teachers, and Shamans. As people on the journey to healing and self-discovery, we often look to others who seem to have more wisdom, insight, power, or answers. This relationship dynamic between the seeker, student, or client, and the teacher, guru, or guide, can be fraught with power dynamics and codependency.

On this episode of Another Way To See It, Kim & Randy revisit the 30-day Guest House Challenge. It’s a great episode filled with personal truths and vulnerability, and a little challenge for you, our dear listeners.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

Some momentary awareness comes

As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,

Who violently sweep your house

Empty of its furniture,

Still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

For some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

Meet them at the door laughing,

And invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

Because each has been set

As a guide from beyond.

– Rumi

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves… Live the questions now. Perhaps you will gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

On this episode of Another Way To See It, the coaches talk about their 30 Day Guest House journal challenge. The challenge was inspired by the Rumi poem called The Guest House, in which, Rumi invites the reader to welcome each emotion that comes up like a guest, in their home. He encourages the reader to treat the emotions as well as honored guest, and to be curious about why they have come. If the poem touches something in you, why not take the challenge yourself?

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

On this episode of Another Way To See It, the coaches talk about how turbulent times have a way of creating feelings of hopelessness in people, individually, and collectively. We talk about our personal ways to stand up to hopelessness and create feelings of intentionality, and action in our lives.

Resources:

Coach's list:

· Acknowledge your feelings

· Guard your input ( turn off tv news, get your information through sources you can control, reading is a better way to regulate the input of bad news)

· Allow your feelings to rise and fall, allow tears to flow, anger to emerge, knowing that emotions have a 90 second lifespan; but that the stories we attach to those feelings keeps them alive.

· Frame things in your life in a more positive way.

· Narrow your focus. Pay attention to things you do have more control over starting with your thoughts and emotions.

· Take intentional value driven action ( donating to organizations that you support)

· Practice self-care

· Deal with your stuff. Seek counseling, therapy, healing. Face your internal shadow and break generational curses. “As within, so without.”

· Seek your own source of happiness, don't rely on others to make you happy. Do things that light you up.

· Be kind. Kindness is free and the demand for kindness is endless. You will feel better by treating others better.

Be the change you want to see in the world is an abbreviation of what Gandhi actually said; nevertheless, the sentiment is right on. As individuals we are powerful agents of change. If you see something that bothers you, an unkindness, an injustice, a problem, you can take a step (big or small) toward rectifying it today. Show kindness to others, clean up a beach, make a donation to an organization that works specifically on the issue that you’re passionate about, or acknowledge and validate another human’s experience.

"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”

~ Mahatma Gandhi

This is a real coaching session between  our hosts Randy Poindexter and Kim Moran. It's an example of what  a coaching conversation might look like, as every coach and client are different. The goal is forward momentum and positivity. I think we managed to move the needle in this conversation.
