In this 25th episode, host Eric Y. Lapointe virtually heads back to Quebec to explore Canada's French-language production hub to talk about how this province punches well above its weight by leveraging their tight-budget productions and turn them into world-famous stories. For this conversation he sits down with three international sales executives: Mélanie Ratté of Zone 3, Kathleen Préfontaine of Aetios Productions and Barbara Vallant of Aroma TV / KOTV.
About our 3 guests...
MÉLANIE RATTÉ / ZONE 3:
With her passion for media communications, Mélanie Ratté lost no time in making a name for herself in the world of Quebec’s television production. She demonstrated her outstanding ability for building relationships with industry players in Canada and around the world. As Senior Director, International Distribution & Business Development, she is now responsible for expanding Zone3’s international footprint.
KATHLEEN PRÉFONTAINE / AETIOS:
Kathleen has a BFA in Design Art from Concordia University and a Minor in Marketing Management from HEC Montréal. Well... Trusted Media Brands (a.k.a. the original Reader's Digest Association company) is about to celebrate their 100th anniversary in February of 2022, when they published their very first edition of Reader's Digest, promoting the magazine through direct mail marketing by sending 5,000 letters to nurses and schoolteachers. By 1927, they had 30,00 subscribers, by 1939: 3 MILLION! By 1973? Over 30 MILLION! So what do these two brands have in common? Hang tight.
Fast-forward to 2014, a CNBC article explained that Trusted Media Brands was going through its second bankruptcy in 5 years, right around the time when Bonnie Kintzer became the company's President. Nice challenge, huh? By 2017, the company cleaned up its debt and Trusted Media Brands started growing again as a digital-first company.
So what do these companies have in common? In our episode, Johnathan Skogmo, labels Reader's Digest as one of the very first UGC content producers as they would often source articles from their readers. Finally, in the middle of the pandemic, Jukin Media was approached as Trusted Media Brands was looking for a video content company to align with their business. And this is where our podcast begins...

What makes Vancouver so amazing & challenging at the same time?
Well, Vancouver and its suburbs are the former homes of world famous actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Michael J. Fox, Seth Rogen and the list goes on. Located a mere 2.5 hour flight away from LA or a 2.5 hour drive away from Seattle, Vancouver has become one of the major filming hubs, just behind Los Angeles and New York City. The Greater Vancouver Area represents a $3B+ local filming industry, but it remains heavily reliant on production services instead of original programming & intellectual property (IP) and there is always the risk of a brain drain down south.
Guest Details for Global VID Season 2, Episode 5:
While normally host Eric Y. Lapointe focuses on international content subjects and what people can do NOW, today we are taking a step back and focusing on the long-term view of what our industry should expect. Skip this episode at your own risk... because Sandra Lehner gives great insight into this next generation and how to best target them in the not-so-distant future. This is NOT about the Millennials and their second screen potential, but rather the diverse 5-screen multi-tasking generation Z (i.e. anyone born between 1995 and 2010).

Today's Global VID podcast continues to expand with its first Asia Series, with a look into the Indian TV market with Mansi Darbar, the Network Vice President for Strategy & Development at IN10 Media.
In this episode we introduce Mansi Darbar's impressive background and growth within the industry as she takes us through her rise from an early childhood dream to finally landing her first job at Big Synergy Media, before taking on new roles at Balaji Telefilms, ALTBalaji, Applause Entertainment and now finally switching from the production side to broadcasting with IN10 Media, a company that runs 8 business brands (5 linear TV channels including Epic TV for non-scripted content and Gubarre for children + 2 OTT channels including Docubay + 1 production company called Juggernaut). That's a lot to juggle!
Host Eric Y. Lapointe of And Now Global/Global VID not only discusses Mansi’s journey within the industry which includes a big focus on Format acquisitions, and be sure to stick around until the end to find out what foreign programming is currently being acquired by IN10 Media + Mansi will share a few 101 tips on doing business in India.
Welcome to episode 15 of Global VID! In this episode, host Eric Y. Lapointe introduces listeners to BC-based producers Cedar Island Films (Andrew Williamson & Henrik Meyer) and their co-production & international sales partners, The National Film Board (NFB), as we invite their Director of International Distribution & Market Development, Nathalie Bourdon.
The first half of the episode, we focus on Cedar Island Films, this Vancouver-area production company that creates documentaries, doc series, scripted series and feature films with a strong focus on international co-productions. In this segment, we learn how Andrew & Henrik first got started in the business, how they ultimately banded together to form this new prodco and how they helped support the creation of their new NFB documentary The Magnitude of All Things.
Stick around for the second half of the episode as Nathalie Bourdon joins the conversation to further discuss the NFB's collaborative distribution approach with Cedar Island Films as they work towards international exposure for The Magnitude of All Things. The NFB is Canada’s long running public film & digital media producer AND distributor that has been operating since 1939. The NFB has produced some iconic Canadian films in their history so it was interesting to discuss the above documentary further as it shares a uniquely Canadian perspective on a very global story.
Global VID and host Eric Y. Lapointe proposes a special series focused exclusively on Africa and it all starts with our guest Monde Twala, the SVP & GM of ViacomCBS Africa, who is based out of Johannesburg, South Africa.
In this episode we learn how Monde Twala got his start in the industry through his passion for sports and how he ultimately got the top position at ViacomCBS in Africa as well overseeing the global strategy for the BET channel. We also uncover how local African content and intra-African trade is expanding with ViacomCBS shows like Isono and Black Tax and why these local stories are an important part of the overall strategy for the company. Finally, at the very end of the video, we learn what's next for ViacomCBS with the looming expansion plans of the digital platforms Paramount+ and Pluto TV within the continent.
As one of the world’s last emerging television markets, this African series is an excellent opportunity to introduce the continent’s content strengths abroad, while also providing a deep look on how African television executives and producers are creating quality African stories for its own audiences. How are African producers exporting their content within their continent and beyond? How can other territories explore co-productions to support African-made content?
Global VID is produced by Canadian-based international distributor And Now Global.
Today’s Global VID podcast (episode 13) guest is a Canadian named Chris Knight, the President and CEO of Gusto Worldwide Media, an Ottawa-based media company that produces and distributes original content but also acts as a broadcaster with their own international TV channel called Gusto TV. In this episode we learn about the notion of channel sales (i.e. selling a themed channels) with vs. distribution sales (i.e. selling individual programs). We also talk about the different business models with OTT platforms by either doing revenue-share deals or inventory-share deals. What does this all mean? Have a listen and stick around because at the end, we find out how Chris' career first took off. A story "that never happens" (but it did).
Hosted by And Now Global's Eric Y. Lapointe
In this episode of the Global VID podcast, we sit down with Media Ranch's CEO Sophie Ferron to look at the world of TV Formats. This episode is perfect for beginners or established producers looking to branch out their IP (intellectual property) by making it adaptable for international sales in different territories and languages around the world. We all know your typical competition-based shows that have been locally adapted around the world like Big Brother, Survivor, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, Dragon's Den (Shark Tank the US). Spoiler alert: None of these concepts were born in the United States.
Sophie Ferron of Media Ranch generously dives into the details to explain the approach and distinction between "proven formats" and "paper formats". Ferron also shares the latest format industry trends and the differences between dealing with unscripted & scripted IP (intellectual property). Lastly, Ferron also opens up about the challenges of creating game-show formats in Canada, how she has implemented her very own formats incubator in the province of Quebec and what fundamental changes would be required to help Canadian producers become format industry leaders on the world stage.
About Media Ranch: A company well known for premium television formats, distinguishing itself through its two-fold mission as both a producer and a distributor of entertainment formats. With headquarters in Montreal, and offices in Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Warsaw, the company represents, and produces, a catalogue of internationally renowned titles and thousands of hours of premium content ready for distribution. With over a decade of experience as Canada’s premier Format television expert, Media Ranch embraces their company motto that: Great Content is Worth Sharing.
The Bulletin's Editor-In-Chief Conrad Buck is back for another fun TV & Entertainment industry news review with host Eric Y. Lapointe. In this episode we take a look back at the first few months of 2021. Topics include sports TV (as we look at the looming "sports wars"), The Weeknd's Superbowl performance and $7million gamble, Netflix's announcement that they will soon be opening up an office in Canada, a lookback at Kidscreen 2021 and much more!
In this Global VID Podcast episode, we sit down with the founder of Arcana Studios, Sean Patrick O’Reilly and his International Head of Sales, Jerina Hajno. We discuss how they built an animation studio with now 75 employees and where their company is headed.
Most notably, Sean Patrick O'Reilly shares his learnings over the years and shares advice to other producers on how to put together your financial structure for a new film production.
Arcana Studios first got its start in the 2000s by producing graphic novels and comics. The company went onto expanding into producing its own animated films from scratch. If you ever wanted to know what it takes to build up your own production company and turn into an ambitious full-fledge studio, this episode for you!
In this episode, we speak with Presidio Pictures' Ernest White II, a producer and storyteller who created his very first travel show called "Fly Brother with Ernest White II", currently available on Create TV nationally in the United States and PBS stations in multiple American cities. Listen closely as you will get some important tips on how the PBS system works. This also marks our very first "Journey Series" episode that shines a light onto the creative (and business) process with the people that bring these stories to life. We are thrilled that Ernest is our first such guest for the Journey Series as this episode is the perfect hybrid between how storytellers and producers alike get their projects made... and what better way to kick off this new 'journey' with a travel series!
In this first episodse of 2021, host Eric Y. Lapointe speaks with Tony Havelka, the President of Ameba which was Canada’s longest running kids VOD channel, initially set up in 2007.
The conversation starts off by talking reviewing Havelka's first efforts in the technology business, as one of the earliest manufacturers of VR headsets back in 1992, all the way to launching Ameba as a kids OTT service in 2007.
Ameba is a children’s video streaming service that was created, out of Winnipeg Manitoba. It’s free with ads but they ultimately focus on a subscription-based model. The service is only available in the United States and Canada and can be found on their own website amebatv.com as well as Amazon, TiVO, Xbox 360, Roku, Google TV, Cinemood, Xumo, LG Smart TVs and more. After 13 years in business, this has all resulted in over 10,000 episodes and 2,000 hours of children’s programming.
As we get closer to 2021, Global VID invites Conrad Buck, the founder and editor of The Bulletin (the weekly news briefing for the streaming industry) to help us look back at the entertainment industry as a whole, in the year that was 2020. Topics discussed include "2020" (obviously!), Productions during a Pandemic, In-Person Entertainment, Linear vs. Streaming Viewing and even that Calm app that you saw advertised on CNN (what a juxtaposition!). Plus much more.
In episode 6, Global VID continues its BC Series with a focus on OUTtv and their CEO Brad Danks. OUTtv is not only a Canadian broadcaster but they are also the world's leading producers of LGBTQ+ content. Brad Danks walks us through his start in the industry and how he went on to lead OUTtv and its global expansion plans.
In episode 5, The VID Podcast switches gears to focus on producers involved in original programming as well as the international television distribution industry. Listen to this episode to hear how they have built a vertically integrated production & distribution company for its own original content. Learn how they produced well over 300 television hours that has travelled to over 150 countries and translated into 30 languages.
This is the final episode of our 4-part Virtual Market Series. This episode introduces us to MIPCOM head Laurine Garaude as she takes us through their initial learnings with MIPTV in April and how the organization is now moving forward with a complete virtual strategy for MIPCOM Online+. As MIPCOM is THE biggest TV event of the year, this episode gives us a glimpse of what to expect in October 2020 and shares how delegates can best prepare for this year's all-digital market.
In this episode, The VID Podcast takes a close look at how DISCOP Africa is focusing on a made-for-Africa approach. Not only do we dive into their unique virtual market strategies, but DISCOP General Manager Patrick Zuchowicki also provides a 101 on the territory for more context. What are the challenges & opportunities for the conference industry during the 2020 pandemic? In this episode, we will hear the learnings of two recent TV & Film market event organizers who chose to quickly adapt and take their events online: MIFA’s head of markets, Véronique Encrenaz and the Banff World’s Media Festival’s Executive Director, Jenn Kuzmyk. These two markets, alongside MIPTV, Hot Docs and the Cannes Film Festival, were some of the world’s first content industry examples to offer virtual events during this crisis. Amidst lock-downs and travel restrictions, our two guests chose the difficult path to reinvent themselves overnight. We'll learn how they first reacted, pivoted and ultimately executed and established the first online templates that may likely become models to grow upon in the months and years to come.
